"Gateway horror" is a hot topic among genre fans. Movies and shows that mixed kid-friendly content with more mature scares initiated many young viewers into the horror world, and for many, such a gateway was found in Eerie, Indiana. Though it only ran for a single season, the 1991 series has since gained a cult following, inspiring horror aficionados like Alex Hirsch, the mind behind Gravity Falls.
Eerie, Indiana may have looked like an ordinary kids' show on the surface, but it offered its young fans dark thrills worthy of The Twilight Zone and The X-Files. Under the creative guidance of Joe Dante, the genius behind modern classics like Gremlins and The 'Burbs, the show blended family entertainment with sharp social satire and considerable spookiness, leaving a lasting impression on its rapt audience. It may only have lasted 19 episodes, but Eerie, Indiana is still a must for fans of Goosebumps and...

Gravity Falls has to be hands down the best kiddie show ever made, which even adults can sit and enjoy. When I first came across the show, I was forced to watch it because that’s what the kids wanted to watch. Fine, I thought. The show had great animations, colors, and voice; the kids would enjoy it. It was simple stuff for a good animated show.
However, it was not just the visual and audio aspects that stood out. I started paying attention to the dialogue. And while it was funny and quick, it was quite well written; finally, a cartoon that understands kids can understand more than a two-dimensional world and a bunch of weird noises. By now, I was as interested as the kids watching it before their bedtime, and that’s when the show hit me with some of the best mysteries I have ever seen.

Animation has come a long way since its inception. The meticulous hand-drawn frames of yore have given way to digital techniques, and things like ink and paint have been replaced by Cintiq art tablets. However, one thing has remained the same: every animated work draws inspiration from something else.
Today, there are more remarkable animated shows to see than ever before. Disney and Hanna-Barbera no longer control the narrative. Now, audiences can find something to pique any interest. Shows like Amphibia and The Owl House appeal to the whimsical whims of fantasy fans. Anyone with an itch for something more mysterious can turn to Infinity Train and Gravity Falls. For comedy, Chowder and Regular Show are always available. All these shows seem wildly different, but they’re all connected to the same source. More specifically, their creators were all protégés of Thurop Von Orman and J. G. Quintel’s Cartoon Network show,...

The devastation sweeping across Los Angeles is heartbreaking to see as horrific wildfires have claimed lives and property. Thankfully, some help is coming thanks to the Pines Family. Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch, the voice of Dipper Pines, Jason Ritter, and Mabel Pines herself, Kristen Schaal, brought plenty of laughs and hopes for the victims in a charity livestream that raised over $90,000 for the Wildfire Relief Fund. With the fundraiser still open, it’s not the only way fans can help, as incredibly rare items are up for grabs in a one-of-a-kind auction that no animation fan wants to miss.

The Owl House ran for three seasons on Disney Channel, during which time the relationship between human teenager Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles) and child-like demon King (Alex Hirsch) was always central. However, how a certain piece of Boiling Isles lore connects to their dynamic is never explicitly clarified in the show. The Owl House follows Luz as she stumbles into a magical otherworld and settles into the Owl House, where she trains as a witch under the tutelage of chaotic witch Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick).
When they all meet, Eda already has King, a somewhat mysterious creature who believes he was once the king of all demons, in her care. However, King is objectively still a kid, and he and Luz develop a best friend/sibling relationship, while Eda comes to view them as her surrogate kids. The Owl House was a triumph among Disney fans new and old, drawing upon the style of previous hit animated TV shows while offering something new, with many standout episodes. The adventures of human Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), her witch mentor Eda the Owl Lady (Wendie Malick), and demon best friend King (Alex Hirsch) exhibit plenty of hilariously absurd humor, all the while gradually assembling a profound story of self-acceptance and standing up for what's right. Creator Dana Terrace's kooky and smart world-building shows no bounds, while the supporting cast provides the show with strong friendship and romance subplots.
The Owl House was prematurely canceled after season 3, wrapping things up with a shorter final season, which nonetheless did justice to Luz and everyone else's character arcs and the vibrant setting. Gravity Falls is a beloved animated series that has had tie-in novels and a video game, but not any kind of live-action adaptation. To imagine what that might look like, a fan-made concept trailer has been made for a live-action Gravity Falls movie.
Shared by Multiverse of Movies on YouTube, the trailer was created with the use of AI-generated imagery and voices. They've been used to imagine various celebrities as they might appear as different Gravity Falls characters, including Stranger Things stars Finn Wolfhard and Sadie Sink starring in the respective roles of Dipper Pines and Mabel Pines. Of course, AI technology has a while to go before it's perfect, and some of the imagined casting choices look less convincing than others. In any case, it provides an interesting peek at the kind of film a live-action Gravity Falls movie might be. The video can be watched below..

Gravity Falls is a spooky show, but nothing is scarier than AI.
The Atlantic recently released an article revealing that Hollywood scripts are being used to power AI. Writers have long suspected that the LLMs--Large Language Models--powering popular chatbots like ChatGPT have been using Hollywood scripts to train on. They show remarkable fluency in recreating the voices of popular films and television shows (albeit without the wittiness and long-term memory of an actual human writer).
However, there is now clear evidence that these scripts are being used in AI training. Dialogue from a whopping 53,000 movies and 85,000 TV episodes have been scrapped for these LLMs to consume. This data set has been used by AI giants like Apple, Anthropic, Meta, Nvidia, Salesforce, Bloomberg, and more. The Atlantic has created a search engine which can be used to find what scripts have been collected in the training data set.

Over the years, there have been plenty of incredible animated television series, but only a select few would earn the distinction of being considered masterpieces. To truly be a masterpiece, a show must go further than anything else of its kind and have an undeniable quality in terms of artistry, legacy, longevity, and reception. For a TV show to be a genuine masterpiece, it should tap into something that nothing before it previously had and, whether through its art style, thematic depth, or influence on pop culture, break new ground in the world of animation.
Some of the best animated series ever made have earned this classification and become undisputed masterpieces of television. While art is subjective, and not everybody will have the same opinion, these critically acclaimed series all brought something new to the table and have endured in a way few other animated shows have. Gravity Falls won over so many fans by having some of the zaniest characters ever put into a TV show. Far from being too ridiculous, though, the characters' distinctive personality quirks in just the perfect way for them to be hilarious and likable instead of annoying. However, with so many characters, each having something unique to remember, it is inevitable that not every character is as memorable as others, like Nate or Marius von Fundshauser.
In fact, some of them even get forgotten completely as the overall plot of the story only includes them once or twice. Despite the lack of screentime, many of these more forgettable characters still have well-developed backstories. In fact, a lot of these side characters are far deeper than the personality flaws that make them amusing. Over its three-season run, which aired on the Disney Channel, Dana Terrace's The Owl House established a sprawling, magical world where its characters could play. Even so, fans of the show have noticed a fair bit of crossover potential. While The Owl House mostly (and justifiably) prioritized telling a self-contained story, it also took the time to canonize a major connection to another fan-favorite Disney cartoon: Gravity Falls.
One of The Owl House's most prominent fan theories has been that the character of Edalyn Clawthorne (Wendie Malick) was once briefly married to Stan Pines (Alex Hirsch), aka Grunkle Stan, from Gravity Falls, the Hirsch-created show that ran for two seasons on Disney Channel and Disney Xd from 2012 to 2016. The theory dates back to February 2020, when it was first presented by Instagram user inlovewithcartoons.

Even 8 years after Gravity Falls ended, I still have questions about the show's many mysteries and characters, which is what makes The Book of Bill so exciting. Penned by series creator Alex Hirsch, the tie-in text is written from Bill Cipher's point of view. Although many of us didn't initially realize what Gravity Falls' end-credits cryptograms were teasing, Bill, a triangle-shaped interdimensional demon, was the show's overarching antagonist. The top hat-wearing, one-eyed menace is capable of infiltrating and taking over peoples' minds, which makes him a massive threat even by Gravity Falls standards.
The series finale, "Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back the Falls," Gravity Falls' core characters twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, their Great Uncle "Grunkle" Stan, and Stan's estranged brother, Ford try to thwart Bill Cipher's evil plans. The profoundly unhinged and wildly irreverent Bill Cipher is one of my favorite TV show villains. Although his goals are deceptively simple,...

Disney executive Meredith Roberts shared a surprising update on Gravity Falls in 2024, eight years after the series finale. Created by Alex Hirsch, the 2012 animated show was centered around Dipper and Mabel Pines, young twins who explored the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon and assisted their great-uncle Stan. Although Gravity Falls ended after just two seasons, The Book of Bill tie-in project reveals more about both the strange titular town and the mysterious Bill Cipher. Penned by Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch, who also voices Bill in the TV series, The Book of Bill also serves as a solid continuation of the Twin Peaks-inspired horror-comedy show. Well before Bill Cipher is formally introduced, the show follows twins Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel Pines (Kristen Schaal), who arrive in the strange town of Gravity Falls to spend the summer with their great uncle, Grunkle Stan (Hirsch).
A grifter of sorts, Grunkle Stan runs a tourist trap called the Mystery Shack, which capitalizes on the Oregon town's string of supposedly paranormal happenings. While Stan is billed as a classic skeptic who's set on swindling people, Dipper wants to believe in the supernatural goings-on, especially after he finds a mysterious journal in the forest.

When ‘Gravity Falls’ premiered on Disney Channel in 2012, it must have been hard to imagine the cultural phenomenon that it would become in the following years, but that didn’t keep creator Alex Hirsch from dreaming big. Though it only ran for two seasons on Disney Channel and Disney Xd, the impact of ‘Gravity Falls’ was massive. Since the show ended in 2016, Hirsch has gone on to create other hits such as ‘The Owl House’ and is an admirably outspoken advocate for animators, but ‘Gravity Falls’ didn’t really stop when the show ended. Hirsch has dropped not just Easter eggs online after the finale, but a series of books and a worldwide Arg that brought one of the most iconic characters in the series very nearly to life. Most acclaimed TV shows have rough starts, but pushing through reveals great storytelling. Watching a show thoroughly enhances the experience; some shows need to be seen in their entirety. It's common to lose interest in popular shows initially, but returning to it can lead to a newfound appreciation.
Due to some shows having a rough start or a slow middle, it is not impossible to all but give up on a show before coming back to it with renewed vigor and ultimately being glad to see it to the end. Im embarrassed to say that I was initially uninterested in what are considered to be some of the best TV shows of all time and almost didnt watch them. All pop culture is partially affected by personal experience, and certain themes and formats might not land with any given viewer.

How Brad Could Bump Into Angelina in Venice
Running into an ex at a party can be awkward. But imagine if the party is the Venice Film Festival and the exes are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. That potentially incendiary meet-cute could well happen, as both are starring in films that seem to be probable contenders in Italy. Pitt’s movie, Wolfs, doesn’t sound much like festival fodder — it’s a buddy comedy about rival crime-scene “fixers” who are both called to remove the same dead body, directed by the guy who made Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jon Watts — except that Pitt’s buddy in the film is George Clooney, a part-time Italiano who gets lots of love in Venice. Jolie, meanwhile, is starring in Maria, a drama about opera singer Maria Callas that couldn’t sound more like a festival flick if it were shot in Budapest by...

When Disney Channel’s The Owl House first blasted into the Demon Realm in 2020, the animated series provided a delightful escape from reality for kid and adult viewers alike. Although the show ran for just three seasons, it amassed a fiercely loyal fanbase and garnered widespread acclaim for its blend of humor, horror, and heartfelt storytelling.
Created by Dana Terrace, the series centered on Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), a 14-year-old Dominican-American girl who finds a portal that leads to Boiling Isles, a magical realm in another dimension. Luz decides to stay and pursue her dream of becoming a witch, attending Hexside Academy and befriending a host of eccentric characters like her mentor Eda (Wendie Malick), skull-headed titan King (Alex Hirsch), and quirky house demon Hooty (also Hirsch).

A Gravity Falls revival could work with a spinoff focused on Stan and Ford. There's potential for a spinoff exploring Dipper and Mabel's post-summer adventures. Whatever the revival brings, it must avoid tampering with the show's perfect ending.

However, in a positive turn of events, the fan-favorite animated series could be set for an impending revival, according to one of Disney's top executives, Meredith Roberts. Gravity Falls began in 2012 and ended its run after a couple of years in 2014. Despite the series ending, creator Alex Hirsch has continued to expand on the universe with several written works. While Gravity Falls may have ended in 2014 on the Disney Channel, fans are still hoping for a revival—thankfully, that doesn't look too far out of reach, at least according to an update from a top Disney executive.
The series may have ended in 2014, but since then, creator Alex Hirsch has published several books in the universe. This included Gravity Falls: Tales of the Strange and Unexplained, Lost Legends, and Journal 3.
In fact, another book is even coming out later this year, called The Book of Bill, which tells the story of the show from the perspective of the big bad.

The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy delivers positive LGBTQ+ representation and compelling humor throughout season 1. Other animated sci-fi series can learn from the Amazon show's approach to LGBTQ+ characters. There are other animated series that feature the humor and representation that Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy benefits from.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is Amazon's hilarious new sci-fi series, and it features great LGBTQ+ representation — so much so that it may leave viewers searching for more animated comedies with LGBTQ+ characters. Dr. Klak's mental health storyline takes up much of her character arc in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy season 1, but viewers also get a look at her love life during the first batch of episodes. Dr. Klak is a queer character who shows interest in women — including Dr. Zypha, the hospital's new dendropathologist — and previously had a relationship with the non-binary Dr. Azel.

The beloved, award-winning animated series Gravity Falls is known for its groundbreaking storytelling, worldbuilding, and sharp writing by creator Alex Hirsch. However, despite the genius of Hirsch's work, he still had to deal with frustrating censorship issues that came with putting together a unique series for a family television network such as the Disney Channel. The various censorship issues the show faced symbolize the bureaucracy and challenges Hirsch faced in delivering one of the best and most celebrated shows of the previous decade. Hirsch had to constantly fight with the network censors over the most minor and innocuous things. Such a feat must have been maddening for an artist as talented as Hirsch. The series was not only a creative triumph, but a victory for Hirsch and the fans of the show over network censorship! Here is a look back at the censorship battles that forged Gravity Falls.

Gravity Falls season 2 was the last because the creator, Alex Hirsch, wanted to give the show a real conclusion and avoid dragging out the story. There are currently no plans for a Gravity Falls season 3, as the show was always intended to have two seasons and the ending of season 2 resolved most of the mysteries. While a season 3 is unlikely, there is potential for a spin-off or video game in the future, as the show's impact and fan base continue to grow. However, Disney's ownership of the IP may pose challenges.

Disney's animated series Gravity Falls follows young twins Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) as they spend the summer with their great-uncle (or "Grunkle") Stan, voiced by series creator Alex Hirsch. Stan Pines owns the "Mystery Shack," a tourist trap in Oregon's Gravity Falls where he and the kids uncover local mysteries and supernatural events. The show ran for only two seasons, which Hirsch announced was "100% my choice, and it's something I decided on a very long time ago." This allowed the show to reveal its secrets sooner than most would, and it turns out that Stan also has a twin brother, Ford (J. K. Simmons), who disappeared years ago into "The Universe Portal." It's at this stage that Gravity Falls starts to feel more like Rick and Morty, but you might be surprised by just how much the two shows overlap.
