Years ago, I was sent to a screening of a film called "Your Name." I wasn't told until minutes before it started, and I had no idea what I was about to see. It was an anime film by Makoto Shinkai about two young people who switch bodies and learn about each other's lives, and it was so stunningly beautiful and touching that I had to sit in my seat for a bit before I could talk about it. Shinkai is back with another magical teen story in "Suzume," which got me in the gut yet again.
The teenage years are rough. Anyone who has lived through them will tell you that. You're trying to figure out what sort of person you'll be, find your place in the world, deal with massive changes in your body and your feelings, and navigate your love life. I don't know how Shinkai manages to take what can feel,...

Dread hit the black carpet of the tenth annual Screamfest La for the festival’s sixth day, and brought back some video interviews with the filmmakers of the Los Angeles premiering features Tucker & Dale vs Evil, and MTV’s upcoming My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 2.
Chatting with Tucker & Dale vs Evil’s Thomas Ausberger, the horror/comedy’s producer communicated to us his long-standing involvement with first-time directors, and also hinted at Us distribution for the film (American filmgoers who embrace such films as Shaun of the Dead should rejoice, as Tucker & Dale vs Evil does for the killer-hillbilly sub-genre what Shaun did for zombie flicks, and if the audience’s laugh-out-loud from beginning to end response was any indication, then the Eli Craig-directed film will be an audience fave). The clever and uproarious film stars actors Alan Tudyk (Serenity) as ‘Tucker’ and Tyler Labine (from the...
