Jon M. Chu is shutting down casting rumors surrounding his upcoming Britney Spears biopic movie. The “Wicked” director told fans on X that his movie is not even in the casting process yet as reports circulate claiming that Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Millie Bobby Brown are battling it out to play the iconic pop star on the big screen.
“None of this is true,” Chu wrote in response to Grande, Carpenter and Brown being contenders. “Sounds exciting but have not had one conversation about casting this movie yet. We are way too early in development. Sorry.”
Chu directed Grande to an Oscar nomination in “Wicked,” and the duo have the second movie, “Wicked: For Good,” arriving in theaters this November. The musical’s film studio, Universal Pictures, is backing the Britney Spears biopic, as is “Wicked” producer Marc Platt. Universal landed the rights to the biopic last August. The...

It's only been two and a half months of 2025, and audiences have already been graced with plenty of entertaining movies of all genres. From new comedies to sci-fi epics, 2025 is off to a great start.
Audiences have voiced their opinions, and there is much debate over what's the best of these movies to have released this year. Although there are no bad answers so far, there are movies that feel like they exceed expectations and rise above the rest.

Movies are a love language. When you stop to think about it, it’s a grand gesture for hundreds of people to put years of effort, time, and sacrifice into making something for you. On a tangential level, to crib from Roger Ebert’s wise words, movies are an “empathy machine.” We’re allowed to feel some sense of, if not love, then at least compassionate understanding. I’d argue this ability to feel empathy is not limited by genre or subgenre. This is not to say that every movie invites empathy, but rather that it can be found regardless of the aspects that make up the genre.
And yes, that even includes what Ebert called “Dead Teenager Movies,” more commonly known as the slasher film. As recent entries in the subgenre have proven, there’s plenty of compassion to be squeezed from the slasher genre as well. You may...

Love hurts in an exclusive to Collider sneak peek behind the making of Josh Ruben’s horror hit, Heart Eyes. To celebrate the movie’s digital arrival, audiences are invited to take a peek behind the curtain and walk through one of the project’s most brutal and bloody scenes alongside Ruben and Director of Photography, Stephen Murphy. The film, which sliced and diced its way into cinemas back in February, straddles the line between horror and rom-com, giving audiences not only a holiday horror flick, but also something they’ve never seen before. In it, Mason Gooding’s (the Scream franchise) Jay and Olivia Holt’s (Totally Killer) Ally find themselves up against a masked psychopath who steps out to slay happy couples on Valentine’s Day.

Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes melds the slasher and romance in ways that are designed to be disruptive and overtly eye-catching. It wants to give the viewer a giddy, breathless time at the movies without fussing too much about stray tangents of the serial killer’s other victims. Only one murder gets dispensed in the prologue right away, so that the film can then swerve into its central, hastily developed love story between two heartbroken people, one turned cynical and distant and the other still desperately idealistic and hopeful in love returning.
The V-Day slasher is the driving engine of the film. Can the lovers be safe while a maniacal killer is on the loose, targeting them as the sorry victims? The motivations take forever to skid in but serial killer dramas don’t really demand it as a constant prerequisite. Yet the writing doesn’t favour the film to...

This tax season, why not shrug off the deadline in style by watching a Valentine’s day themed violent comedy-horror slasher instead? On April 15, Sony Pictures’ Heart Eyes will make its Blu-Ray debut.
This is still playing in some theaters, actually — Valentine’s Day wasn’t that long ago, and Sony figured audiences were in the mood for something a little more unconventional. Heart Eyes didn’t do That well (probably why it’s coming to home video so soon), but it didn’t bomb either. So, what’s this thing about?
If you guessed “a serial killer who wears a mask with LED hearts over the eyes,” you’d be right, but you’re also a cheater since all you did was look at the box art. The real stars of Heart Eyes are the “couple” at its center. Heart Eyes wreaks his/her/their vengeance every February 14 by going after romantic lovers.

Valentine's Day may have come and gone, but it's always a great time to put on a romantic horror comedy. 2025 has already seen a few stellar romantic-fueled genre releases. However, none have been as fun or as bloody as Josh Ruben's Heart Eyes. The Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding-starring slasher made both critics and audiences fall in love with the sub-genre all over again. Now, after a more than decent box office run, Heart Eyes is available to watch at home.

Now, just over three weeks later, the film has received a Digital release and is available to watch on Amazon, among other platforms.
Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. The new slasher Heart Eyeshit some impressive box office milestones, thanks to its self-aware flirtation with the history of slashers and some of the most iconic rom-com tropes. Director Josh Ruben's slasher-wrapped-in-a-rom-com follows the Heart Eyes killer, a masked murderer that targets a different town every Valentine’s Day. This time around he’s sleepless in Seattle. Protagonists Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding) have a meet cute at a coffee shop where they have the same order and an abundance of chemistry, then the inverse when it’s revealed that Jay is the “consumer cupid” her advertising firm has called in to clean up her mess of a Valentine’s jewelry campaign. There are thrills and kills from point A to point B. And spoiler alert: Ally and Jay are endgame.

A couple of years ago, Olivia Holt had a prominent role in the time travel slasher movie Totally Killer. She’s one of the leads in the rom-com slasher Heart Eyes, which reached theatres earlier this month. Now, she’s already at work on another genre project, as she’s starring in a film called This Is Not a Test, which is described as “The Breakfast Club meets 28 Weeks Later.” Adam MacDonald is directing the apocalyptic horror thriller, which is based on a YA novel by bestselling author Courtney Summers – and it was MacDonald who took to social media to announce that production is now underway!

‘This Is Not a Test’ – Production Begins on Olivia Holt-Starring YA Horror from ‘Pyewacket’ Director

Pyewacket and Out Come the Wolves director Adam MacDonald is helming apocalyptic horror-thriller This Is Not a Test, and the filmmaker recently took to Instagram to reveal that production is officially underway.
The horror movie adapts the YA novel by New York Times bestselling author Courtney Summers, set at the start of a zombie apocalypse.

The cast includes Olivia Holt, Froy Gutierrez, and Luke MacFarlane (Bros, “Brothers & Sisters”).

If you're a slasher fan, there are many reasons to be happy right now. After being looked down upon for years, the subgenre is surging back thanks to recent releases like Thanksgiving and the Terrifier trilogy. This month we were presented with another promising slasher entry in Heart Eyes, directed by Josh Ruben. Heart Eyes has a clever premise, as a masked killer strikes every Valentine's Day, killing couples. When the killer choses Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding) as his (her? their?!) next targets, what we get is a horror movie that purposely leans into romantic comedy tropes, as Ally and Jay begin to fall in love while they run for their lives. Ruben has said that he modeled his film after Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, but, honestly, it's styled more like Scream, while falling short of both because of one big, fatal flaw: Heart Eyes...

It’s incredibly rare for any movie to make more money in its second weekend of release than its first, but Spyglass and Sony’s slasher Heart Eyes managed to do just that over the weekend.
Topping its opening weekend domestic haul of $8.3 million, director Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes just scared up an additional $10 million in its second weekend at the U.S. box office!
Positive word of mouth and strong reviews helped out here, but Heart Eyes‘ week two success can no doubt be largely attributed to this past Friday being Valentine’s Day. The movie made $4.9 million on V-Day alone, up from the debut Friday total of $3.7 million. Even this week’s Sunday and Monday totals were higher than the previous week’s Sunday and Monday hauls. Another holiday, President’s Day, surely helped to boost this past Monday’s performance.

2024 was a massively successful year for horror movies, especially those from independent studios. With notable titles like A24's Heretic and a wide selection from Neon, including Longlegs, Cuckoo and Immaculate, the horror field saw an increase in audience reception. Looking toward the cinematic lineup in 2025, it's clear that the refreshing wave of new horror films is only growing.
Whether it's expanding franchises with anticipated, blood-curdling sequels or fresh takes on pre-established horror stories, 2025 contains a diversity of works that will have audiences squealing with joy and fear. If this year's releases are anywhere near replicative of last year's, long-time horror fans and apprehensive newcomers are in for a truly terrifying year.

If nothing else, Heart Eyes proves that the slasher genre is nothing if not adaptable. Director Josh Ruben and writers Christopher Landon, Michael Kennedy, and Phillip Murphy have taken the traditional rom-com formula and laced it with blood, guts, and knowing winks to both genres, delivering a film that is as charming as it is chaotic. While the horror elements feel more functional than inventive, the film shines as a witty, self-aware send-up of rom-com conventions—right down to its contrived meet-cutes and sweeping, albeit blood-soaked, declarations of love.
At the centre of the carnage are Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding), two advertising professionals pitted against each other in a Valentine’s Day marketing campaign. Holt plays Ally as a cynical career woman recovering from a breakup, while Gooding’s Jay is the affable romantic who challenges her jaded outlook. Every horror film needs a good boogeyman, and the monstrous maniac at the centre of Heart Eyes is a great one. Striking every Valentine’s Day, the Heart Eyes Killer (the police and media dub him Hek) kills only couples, his huge, heart-shaped peepers doubling as night vision goggles (cue Silence Of The Lambs-y pov shots but bathed in red) and his weapon of choice a crossbow that fires deadly cupid’s arrows. He provides a fantastic nemesis in Josh Ruben’s (Werewolves Within) tremendously knowing, fun romp that mashes up romcoms and horror slasher movies and playfully decides the two genres have more in common than you think.
The set-up is pure romcom fluff, featuring every trope in the book (with a pink cover); good looking people in high-end jobs, meet-cutes over mixed up coffee orders, knocking their heads together bending down, speaking over each other (“no you go...

Directed by Josh Ruben, Heart Eyes is a darkly comic Valentines-themed slasher with considerable franchise potential. To that end, it’s co-scripted by some of the writers behind the likes of Freaky and Happy Death Day 2U, so the filmmakers have a degree of cachet, slasher-wise.
Rising star Olivia Holt (Cloak & Dagger) plays Seattle ad campaign designer Ally McCabe, who’s forced to work alongside high-flying rival Jay Simmonds (Mason Gooding) after a Valentine’s-themed work disaster. Unfortunately, their work-related proximity puts them squarely in the sights of the Heart Eyes Killer, a murderer with a heart eyes mask who targets couples every Valentine’s Day.

The teaser trailer for the gonzo horror-sci-fi comedy “Companion” released late last year stated that it was “from the studio that brought you ‘The Notebook.’”
This is cheeky, for sure, but it’s also technically true: “Companion” studio New Line Cinema was responsible for the beloved Ryan Gosling/Rachel McAdams romance. It works to offset your expectations, particularly because the next card reads that the movie is also “from the unhinged creators of ‘Barbarian.’”
More than just a funny marketing hook, the “Notebook”/”Barbarian” comparison also speaks to the vibe of the movie, described by the studio as “a new kind of love story,” which splits the difference between terror and tenderness as it traces the dissolution of a relationship over one chaotic weekend. That’s when Josh (Jack Quaid) and his robot companion Iris (Sophie Thatcher) find their relationship strained – and covered in blood. (The film has grossed a respectable $27 million worldwide so far.

The following contains spoilers for Heart Eyes, which is now playing in theaters.
For several years, slasher films have been growing in popularity again. With the revivals of old faithful franchises like Halloween, Scream, and Saw, it's hard to deny that the genre is back in full swing. Along with sequels, reboots, and requels, of course, come new slasher films that try to stick out among the sea of blood as something potentially great. To be fair, most new entries into the subgenre fail to live up to the hype of these long-established horror giants, but every once in a while, one comes along that just hits right.

Director Josh Ruben’s new horror film strikes a very particular, even peculiar tone, but it’s tons of fun. Here’s our Heart Eyes review.
Ah, Valentine’s Day. The one day a year you’re under immense pressure to be in a relationship and to show your love in very public and excessive ways.
Ally (Olivia Holt) really feels that pressure. Her ex-boyfriend has already moved on with another woman, and she’s about to be fired from her job for designing an ad campaign focusing on doomed couples – all while there’s a serial killer killing couples on Valentine’s Day. She’s paired with Jay (Mason Gooding) to work on a new campaign, but things get a little complicated when the killer goes after them.
Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes, then, is a strange film. It’s both a romantic comedy and a gruesome slasher. The combo shouldn’t work,...

Devon Sawa sat down with The Direct to talk all about his latest horror film, Heart Eyes, which offers a unique blend of a slasher rom-com experience for audiences.
The film follows Olivia Holt's Ally McCabe and Mason Gooding's Jay Simmonds who end up in the crosshairs of the Heart Eyes Killer, a maniac who massacres couples on Valentine's Day, after being mistaken for a heartthrob duo.
Heart Eyes is unlike most other horror films out there. Not only is it intensely gory, but it also offers a fun rom-com, dark comedy spin to the horrific events unfolding—including the surprise identity of the titular killer.

Heart Eyes slays the Valentine's Day box office by skewering romantic comedies with bloody slasher fun. Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding co-star as Seattle advertising executives targeted for slaughter after a chance meeting. Kismet proves to be a death sentence as they run for their lives while hilariously still flirting. Director Josh Ruben, known for Scare Me and his fantastic adaptation of Werewolves Within, started his career in sketch comedy and CollegeHumor shorts. Speaking to MovieWeb, Ruben credits these early experiences with establishing a good working relationship with his terrific Heart Eyes ensemble, which also includes Jordana Brewster and Devon Sawa:
"I try to speak to my actors as I would like to be spoken to. That all starts with a vibe. You have to be confident as the cruise captain, but you also need to set a precedent, or create the kind of playground where actors feel like they can take risks.

Olivia Holt is opening up about her mental health journey.
The 27-year-old Heart Eyes actress and singer made an appearance on iHeart’s I’ve Never Said this Before with Tommy Didario.
During the conversation, she addressed something she’s never shared before now.
“I think actually a lot of what we’ve been talking about is these really special moments in your life and how important they are to you, and how they build character for yourself. And I think it’s important to remember that even in some of the happiest and most exciting moments of your life, sometimes there can be things happening behind the curtain that aren’t as exciting… and that are heavier and deeper,” she began.

With Heart Eyes slicing its way into theaters this weekend, the rebirth of the holiday horror genre takes another step forward following the impressive success of Eli Roth’s 2023 hit, Thanksgiving. Along with having its obvious ties to Valentine’s Day, Josh Ruben’s (Werewolves Within) latest feature-length production also blends the bloody and gruesome genre with another beloved category — rom-coms. At its gooey, mushy center, Heart Eyes is the tale of a love between two people so strong that a serial killer will stop at nothing to destroy it. The two characters in question are Olivia Holt’s Ally and Mason Gooding’s Jay. Not only were the leading actors tasked with playing up the horror-comedy of it all, but they also needed to sell their romance because, without that, there wouldn’t be a film.

Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes is a Valentine’s Day romantic comedy turned slasher that aims for both lovey-dovey sweetness and blood-soaked holiday thrills. Starring Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding, it flutters between cutesy rom-com banter and heart-pounding chases with a doe-eyed killer—though the bumpy pacing and shallow character work keep it from becoming a new holiday staple. Unfortunately, the sharpest thing about this slasher is its one-liners.

Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes brought a brand new original slasher to the box office over the weekend, with the holiday-themed horror movie nearly matching the opening weekend of fellow Spyglass slasher Thanksgiving back in 2023. While that movie opened to $10.3 million, Heart Eyes came up a tad bit short with a domestic opening weekend haul of $8.5 million.
Sony released Heart Eyes into 3,102 theaters across the United States over the weekend, with the slasher/romantic comedy hybrid competing with the Super Bowl on Sunday. But the real test for Heart Eyes will be this coming weekend, with Valentine’s Day Weekend giving the Valentine’s Day-themed horror movie a perfect opportunity to win over more hearts.
Heart Eyes, which comes with a reported $18 million production price tag, is currently in the #2 spot on the domestic box office charts behind the animated family movie Dogman.

Heart Eyes North America Box Office: Opening Weekend Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sony’s new R-rated horror thriller Heart Eyes has landed at the #2 spot in the domestic box office chart as projected. However, the film earned lower than the predicted opening weekend range. The movie opened with positive reviews, carrying a reported production budget of $18 million. Scroll below for the deets.
Its lack of star power and being released on the Super Bowl weekend might be one of the reasons for an underwhelming weekend despite showing promise with its release-day collection. The movie was directed by Josh Ruben, who has directed Scare Me and Werewolves Within. It is a romantic comedy slasher with a B- rating on CinemaScore.
According to Luiz Fernando’s report, Heart Eyes collected only $8.5 million on its three-day opening weekend, whereas it was predicted to earn between $11 million and $14 million. It is 22.7-39.3% less than the expected prediction.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s canine crime adventure “Dog Man” sniffed and scratched its way to No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. Meanwhile two newcomers, Universal’s action comedy “Love Hurts” and Sony’s gory slasher “Heart Eyes,” mostly settled for scraps in this quiet Super Bowl stretch.
“Dog Man,” a family film about a police officer who becomes surgically fused to his faithful pup after getting injured on the job, collected $13.7 million from 3,887 North American theaters over the weekend. Those ticket sales, down 62% from its $36 million debut, were behind the second-weekend projections of $19 million to $22 million. So far, “Dog Man” has grossed $54.1 million domestically and $66 million globally against its $40 million budget.
“Audience scores have been stellar,” says Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “Fingers crossed for a great run like we’ve seen on DreamWorks titles.” He’s referring to the robust...

Hollywood icon Ke Huy Quan-led Love Hurts and Josh Ruben's Heart Eyesopen strong but still can't outpace Dog Man.
Per Variety, DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man is still dominating the box office in its second weekend in theaters, even in spite of the releases of both the action comedy Love Hurts starring Ke Huy Quan and director Josh Ruben's new slasher comedy, Heart Eyes. While Heart Eyes has already brought in over $3.7 million in preview screenings and Friday showings, that only barely outpaced Dog Man's second Friday earnings of $3.2 million. Preview screenings and Friday showings of Love Hurts brought in $2.6 million, with forecasts for the weekend putting it at around $6 million, whereas Dog Man is on track to pass earnings of over $54 million within its first ten days, giving it an $18 million projection for its second weekend in theaters.

We have a wealth of wonderfully talented actors who got their start making Disney shows and films. But, as often discussed on Collider Ladies Night, this is an industry with a habit of boxing artists in to the first they do well. One particularly popular box? The Disney box, and that’s the one I focused on with Heart Eyes star, Olivia Holt.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s family film Dog Man isn’t having any trouble staying atop the box office in its second weekend with an expected $13.7 million from 3,886 theaters as new offerings Heart Eyes and Love Hurts battle for Super Bowl scraps.
That should put Dog Man‘s domestic total at a pleasing $54.1 million through Sunday (the pic cost a modest $40 million or so to produce).
Super Bowl weekend has always been a challenge for Hollywood studios since moviegoing plummets dramatically on the day of the big game (this year’s championship game sees last year’s victor the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles). Movies targeting younger females and genre titles appealing to younger audiences are a favorite go-to in terms of movies daring to open over Super Bowl weekend, and this year is no different, although it’s more weighted on the genre side this time out.

It seems an old “Dog Man” can outearn new pics, as the DreamWorks Animation caper will lead the domestic box office for a second weekend in a row. Meanwhile, slasher “Heart Eyes” and Ke Huy Quan actioner “Love Hurts” are landing in second and third, respectively, turning in more tepid opening weekends.
Universal’s “Dog Man” is expected to top the competition, despite projecting a sizable drop in its sophomore outing. After coming in above projections with its $36 million debut, the crime caper earned $3.2 million on its second Friday and is now forecasting a 62% fall over the three-day frame. Super Bowl weekend is usually one of the calendar’s least busy times for moviegoing; even a well-liked family-friendly picture like “Dog Man” isn’t impervious to the biggest television event of the year. Total domestic gross should pass $54 million through the first 10 days and the film is still well-positioned considering its modest $40 million production budget.

There is a new entry in the holiday horror movie canon coming this February. Like “Thanksgiving” and “Black Christmas” before it, “Heart Eyes” aims to find grisly fun in a holiday that typically isn’t associated with the horror genre.
Directed by Josh Ruben, it will toss some carnage into the usually romantic Valentine’s Day movie mix. The film may, in fact, be exactly what you are looking for this Feb. 14, but only if you happen to find yourself in the mood for a gruesome alternative to the romantic comedies typically associated with the most love-filled day of the year.
Here is how you can watch “Heart Eyes,” including whether or not it’s streaming right now.
When does “Heart Eyes” come out?
“Heart Eyes” hits theaters on Friday, Feb. 7.
Is “Heart Eyes” streaming or in theaters?

Heart Eyes director Josh Ruben may be a horror filmmaker, but nothing could’ve prepared him for the waking nightmare he experienced last month.
On Jan. 7, just weeks before Ruben and his wife Lauren Sick were slated to move into their dream home in Altadena, they watched along in horror as the Eaton Fire headed straight for their new neighborhood in Los Angeles County. While they assumed the worst when their security camera cut to black, Ruben and Sick received confirmation on Jan. 9 that their vacant home was gone. Immediately, friends and collaborators like Mark Duplass, Jordana Brewster and Christopher Landon came to their aid and rallied wider support from the general public, raising nearly $75,000 to get the beloved filmmaking couple back on their feet.
In the process, Ruben also overcame two of the most common fears a person can have: asking for help and accepting it.

Plot: The infamous Heart Eyes killer has been targeting couples on Valentine’s Day for many years. Soon, two co-workers (Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt) mistaken for a couple find themselves spending what’s supposed to be the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.
Review: Watching Heart Eyes, I wondered why there haven’t been more romantic comedy/ horror mash-ups. After all, the horror genre is a perennial date night staple, as nothing breaks the ice on a date like being frightened and clutching your date’s arm when a jump scare happens. Director Josh Ruben, who previously helmed the well-received Scare Me and Werewolves Within, dives head-first into both genres with a gory slasher film that leans more heavily into the rom-com aspects than you might expect, given the film a unique flavour.
To be sure, Ruben and his team of writers (including Happy Death Day...

“Heart Eyes,” in theaters this weekend, is a one-of-a-kind accomplishment.
It’s a slasher movie that is just as much a romantic comedy and vice versa. It’s not trying to be either of these things, it just is. Stars Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt have genuine chemistry, so when their meet-cute is interrupted by the Heart Eyes Killer, a serial murderer who has been stalking couples for years, you’re rooting for their continued survival, not the least of which because you want to see their relationship blossom. It’s odd to call a movie with this much arterial spray cute, but it really is cute.
And the movie feels like even more of an accomplishment because it maintains the quirks and charms of its director Josh Ruben, who is making his studio movie debut. Ruben is a veteran of CollegeHumor, the online comedy site, and his two features,...
