The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” to “Yellowjackets,” TV teens in 2023 are among some of the most rich ever written.

We’re just about two and a half weeks away from finding out what’ll be nominated at the 2020 Emmy Awards, but our 30 Experts from major media outlets have already chimed in with their winner predictions. When it comes to Best Comedy Series, they are split between no less than five shows: 15 predict a victory for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” 12 choose Pop’s “Schitt’s Creek” and one apiece opt for NBC’s “The Good Place,” Hulu’s “Ramy” and Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” Do You agree or disagree with our Experts’ Emmy predictions?

Even though Judith Light has been working in television for decades, she has yet to win a Primetime Emmy despite four career nominations: “Ugly Betty” (2007), “Transparent” (2016 & 2017) and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2018). The actress does, however, have two Daytime Emmys on her mantel for “One Life to Live” (1980 & 1981). Light is back in the awards discussion this year thanks to her role as New York State Senator Dede Standish on Netflix’s “The Politician,” and now one of our 29 Emmy Experts — Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) — predicts she’ll finally win.
SEEWill Luke Kirby (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) go 2-for-2 at Emmys for Best Comedy Guest Actor?
The first season of Ryan Murphy‘s political comedy ended with Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) moving to New York years after a failed attempt at running for his high school’s student body president. That’s where he came into contact with Dede and her...

Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. (Lange lost to Cherry Jones for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”) At this year’s Emmys, the exact same thing could happen to Andrew Scott for his one-and-done role on Netflix’s “Black Mirror.”

Not many people correctly predicted Luke Kirby‘s come-from-behind Emmy victory last year for Best Comedy Guest Actor. In fact, this “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer was in fourth place on our 2019 odds chart, behind Peter MacNicol (“Veep”), John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”) and Adam Sandler (“Saturday Night Live”). This year our Emmy Experts don’t plan on making the same mistake again — he’s in the runner-up position to win his second Emmy Award for the Amazon comedy. Of course, the odds-on front-runner is still Eddie Murphy (“Saturday Night Live”).
As controversial real-life comic Lenny Bruce, Kirby has submitted the fifth episode of Season 3, “It’s Comedy Or Cabbage,” for Emmy consideration. That’s the one where Lenny and his comedian colleague Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) take a fun and flirty detour while she’s traveling the country as part of Shy Baldwin’s warm-up act. For the most part, Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict that the Best Comedy Actress trophy will go to either Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”) or Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). However, one gutsy Emmy prognosticator out of 29 (Lynette Rice of Ent. Weekly) instead goes out on a limb for Merritt Wever (“Run”). And why not? This beloved actress has already taken home two Emmy Awards — both rather unexpectedly — for her work on “Nurse Jackie” (Comedy Supporting Actress in 2013) and “Godless” (Limited/Movie Supporting Actress in 2018).
Wever was so gobsmacked by her first win that she infamously gave one of the shortest Emmy speeches of all time: “Thank you so much. Um … I gotta go, bye.” So it’d be foolish to underestimate the actress yet again at the 2020 ceremony. Watch the Emmys flashback video below.

And so we’ve hit the home stretch for this year’s Halloween season. If your preferred method of celebration involves dressing up for the occasion, we came up with a handful of costume ideas inspired by the 2016 indie film world.
Period pieces, genre fare and absurdist thrillers all brought us iconic characters and distinct looks replicable for any big costume gathering you might be attending in the week to come. Beyond our simple how-to lists, we’ve also tried to give our reasoning for ditching the slutty pirate garb and going for something that might ingratiate yourselves with new cinephile friends.
[Note: Because some of these costumes hinge on some late-film developments, a few spoilers for 2016 indie film releases follow.]
Jesse from “The Neon Demon”
Costume Essentials: Metallic strapless dress, fake blood, face jewels, bright pink lipstick
Why It’s A Great Idea: Nicolas Winding Refn’s visually arresting horror film has the kind of symbolic lead character that Halloween costumes were made for. One of Elle Fanning...

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
The festival runs from January 27-February 7.
Below is the list of World and U.S. Premiere films followed by the list of titles by sidebar categories.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...
