As a teenager, many of my first and strongest movie impressions came not from the movies, but from certain critics. I memorized Robin Wood’s analysis before getting a look at Hitchcock’s Psycho. Raymond Durgnat introduced me to Georges Franju and Luis Buñuel, and I first learned to appreciate a number of great movies including The Barefoot Contessa from Richard Corliss, a terrific critic who championed writers over director-auteurs.
The Barefoot Contessa is a classically structured story, in that it could work as a novel; it’s told from several points of view.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is setting box office records but it's not because of the ground-breaking high frame rate (Hfr), stereoscopic production techniques employed by director Peter Jackson.
The filmmaker's preference was always to show the film in 3D at 48 frames per second (double the current standard) to create a more immersive and realistic.cinematic experience. However, early Hfr footage divided audiences, who have spent decades associating the cinematic experience with the vagaries of 24fps projection.
While the distributor (Warner Bros via Roadshow Films in Australia) was long planning a widespread release of the Hfr version, it ultimately took a more cautious approach.
.In hindsight, it was probably the right decision not to go with a wide release because I think they would have had a significant number of technical issues on their hands,. Hoyts Cinema Technology Group chief technology officer Adam Wrightson said.

Village Cinemas Australia has finished converting its 210 screens to digital projection.
The switch to digital equipment, which produces a far better picture than traditional 35mm projection, has been accelerating since the success of James Cameron's Avatar in 2009. Village said its final switch occured at the Coburg Drive-In.
.Digital cinema not only allows us to achieve incredible on-screen presentation but also allows us to expand our offering to our customers," Village Cinemas chief executive Kirk Edwards said in a statement. "This now includes not just Hollywood blockbusters but also sporting events, concerts, opera; the possibilities are endless..
An industry-wide virtual print fee scheme (Vpf) is expected to help allay the major costs of the installation. Film distributors, which save substantial fees by no longer having to order 35mm prints, will instead pay ongoing fees to exhibitors over an extended period.

Village Cinemas has become the first Australian exhibitor to offer a mobile ticketing system, allowing customers to purchase tickets on their smart phones and scan in a barcode on their phones for direct access into the cinema.
“Village Mobile was developed in response to a growing consumer shift to the smartphone. In many service industries, such as the airline industry, this has triggered increased integration of smartphones and mobile ticketing. This change in consumer demand influenced our decision to provide a mobile service that is user friendly, convenient and enables customers to see their favourite films faster,” CEO Kirk Edwards told Encore.
Edwards did not reveal the size of the financial investment the mobile system represents, but he described it as “an investment in our service delivery and the way we interact with our customers”.
