The work of Italian auteur Luca Guadagnino will be celebrated at a Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival event.

The celebration will be hosted by Indian filmmakers Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s Tiger Baby.

Prior to the event, Guadagnino will deliver a masterclass at the festival. The filmmaker was accorded the festival’s Excellence in Cinema (International) award by chair Priyanka Chopra Jonas at the opening ceremony on Oct. 27. Italy’s Luca Guadagnino and India’s Mani Ratnam will receive the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival’s 2023 Excellence in Cinema awards.

Ratnam will receive the Excellence in Cinema (South Asia) award and Guadagnino the Excellence in Cinema (International) award. The awards will be presented at the festival’s opening ceremony on Oct. 27. Both filmmakers will be present and will deliver masterclasses during the festival.

The festival will screen Guadagnino’s Oscar and BAFTA nominated “I Am Love” (2009) and both parts of Ratnam’s magnum opus “Ponniyin Selvan”.

The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, has been set as the opening film of the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival.

Produced by Ektaa R Kapoor and co-produced by Kapoor Khan, the film recently had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. It follows the story of a cop and single mother who recently lost her child in a shooting spree, as she transfers to a market town north of London and is assigned the case of a missing child.

Kapoor Khan will attend the festival’s red carpet opening ceremony on October 27 at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (Nmacc) in Mumbai.

Tom And Jerry Singapore

The first ever localized “Tom and Jerry” series, featuring the cartoon cat and mouse in Singapore, will premiere in Southeast and South Asia, Australia and New Zealand on Cartoon Network on Oct. 21. It will also stream on HBO Go in Southeast Asia. Episodes will be globally available via the Cartoon Network Asia YouTube channel.

In the seven-part series, the cartoon frenemies weave through colorful neighborhoods, modern skyscrapers and city-in-nature experiences. New episodes will air weekly.

“It was important for us to create stories and environments that feel authentically Singapore – and at the same time honor the distinct animation style and sense of humor that has made Tom and Jerry so well loved for generations,” said Christopher Ho, head of kids at Southeast Asia, Warner Bros. Monsoon Wedding and A Suitable Boy filmmaker Mira Nair has been announced as the Head of Jury for the South Asia Competition at this year’s Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival (October 27-November 5).

The 14 titles selected for the festival’s new competition section, which showcases debut and second-time filmmakers from South Asia and the South Asian Diaspora Cinema, were revealed yesterday, along with the rest of the Jio Mami line-up.

Nair won the Venice film festival’s Golden Lion for Monsoon Wedding (2001) and her more recent credits include The Namesake (2006), The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), Vanity Fair (2004), A Suitable Boy (2020) and Queen Of Katwe (2016).

Her next film will be Amri, an experimental portrait of Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil. She also recently directed ‘Monsoon Wedding the Musical’, which opened in New York City in May 2023 and is next headed for Broadway.

Mumbai Film Festival has announced a packed line-up of 250 films, including the 14 titles selected for its inaugural South Asia Competition, part of an expansion of the festival’s vision to become a hub for works from South Asia and South Asian diaspora talent.

Returning as an in-person event with backing from Reliance Jio, the festival will be based at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (Nmacc) with screenings taking place across eight venues and 20 screens in Mumbai. The festival’s new vision is to become a hub for South Asian and South Asian diaspora cinema and talent and, in keeping with this, the main competition is for 14 films from the region. These include the world premieres of Leesa Gazi’s “A House Named Shahana” (Bangladesh-u.K.), Dibakar Das Roy’s “Dilli Dark” (India), Sumanth Bhat’s “Mithya” (India) and Fazil Razak’s “The Sentence” (India). The popular Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival is returning after a three-year Covid and logistics-related absence with a hub, a refreshed executive team and a host of plans.

Hollywood and Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas continues as festival chair, while media veteran and former Variety contributor Anupama Chopra remains festival director and independent producer Anu Rangachar (Locarno title “Rapture”) heads up the international program. Alongside them is a new team including Deepti DCunha, who previously advised Cannes and Film Bazaar, as artistic director; former Lionsgate India content head Maitreyee Dasgupta as co-director; producer Anupama Bose (Rotterdam title “Joram”) as artistic director, Jio Mami year round program; and Abhishek Kumar as head of marketing, PR and sponsorship.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s media conglomerate Jio remains the title sponsor of the festival, which is operated by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami). The new, glittering Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre will be the festival hub.

The Indian parliament has passed the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, which aims to curb piracy that causes losses of INR200 billion ($2.4 billion) to the film industry, according to government estimates. Those found guilty of film piracy by way of camcording in theaters or unauthorized copying and online transmission and exhibition of a pirated copy of any film will now face punishment of minimum three months imprisonment and a fine of $3,650, which can be extended up to three years imprisonment and fine up to 5% of the audited gross production cost.

The bill also introduces age-based categories of certification by further sub-dividing the existing UA category into seven years (UA 7+), 13 years (UA 13+) and 16 years (UA 16+), instead of 12 years.
