In Exorcism, Anthony’s daughter, Lee Miller (Ryan Simpkins), suspects that her father has either gotten back to his past addictions or there’s some sinister cause behind his erratic behavior. Anthony, who was roped in for a film on exorcism, gets flashbacks of the time when he was molested.

As the movie progresses, strange things start to happen on Anthony’s film sets, with him even banging his head on a table and contorting his body. This makes Lee consult a Catholic priest. Things take a more disastrous turn when Father Conor tries to perform an exorcism on the movie sets.

Though it may seem like there are fewer and fewer milestones in the world of film, look no further than “Autumn Lights,” the first independent American-Icelandic co-production both shot and completed in Iceland. In the film, young American photographer David (played by newcomer Guy Kent) is on assignment in a remote Icelandic community. One day, he discovers a deserted crime scene and becomes implicated in a local investigation, forcing him to remain in the town. While he’s there, he crosses paths with an intriguing Italian woman (Marta Gastini) who’s living with her Icelandic husband (Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson) in the countryside. Producers of Metalhead and Either Way team with La’s Ashley M Kent on the English-language drama.

Shooting started yesterday in Iceland on English-language drama Autumn Lights, the feature directorial debut of Angad Aulakh.

The producers are Los Angeles-based attorney Ashley M Kent, and Mystery’s David Oskar Olafsson and Arni Filippusson; the latter was one of Efp’s Producers on the Move at Cannes last month. Olafsson and Filippusson’s credits include Metalhead, Either Way (remade as Prince Avalanche), King’s Road and Country Wedding.

The cast features Guy Kent [pictured], Marta Gastini, Sveinn Olafur Gunnarsson and Thora Bjorg Helga.

Kent stars as a young American photographer who meets an enigmatic couple while on assignment in remote Iceland.

It took me a while to warm up to Francis Ford Coppola’s take on Dracula from 1992. No cape, and morphing from an old guy in a geisha outfit to one of the Doobie Brothers in a Victorian pimp suit. I was accustomed to the refined stylings of Christopher Lee and Frank Langella. I’m glad, because even more takes on the classic vampire tale would follow, and being a purist just isn’t conducive to having an open mind.

There have been Italian vampire tales before, but never by the master of the giallo himself. I’ve got a good friend who summed up Italian horror cinema perfectly.

While there is a likely Oscar-winner, a massive box set from HBO, and some true crowd-pleasers in this week’s What to Watch, it’s a bit of a downer compared to some more recent jam-packed weeks of Blu-ray and streaming greatness. We also couldn’t find an On Demand title this week worth mentioning, although Denis Villeneuve’s “Enemy,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, hits DirecTV On Demand this Thursday and you can bet we’ll be there to check it out before a March theatrical release. More than his fellow giallo maestros (Bava, Fulci, Martino, and others), Dario Argento has had to live and work in the burdensome shadow of his earlier successes. After nearly two decades of exceptional films boasting glorious cinematic artistry and blood-soaked thrills, Argento established quite the reputation. In recent years, though, since 1993′s Trauma, these prior landmarks of genre perfection have become a distressing caveat added to nearly every negative criticism of his newest release: “Ah, Argento, how far he’s fallen. Remember when….” His latest offering, Dracula 3D, now available on an American-issued 3D Blu-ray (an Italian disc, still playable in the Us, has been out for while), is no exception. Does it rank with Suspiria, Tenebre, Deep Red, or Opera? No. But is it as bad as some detractors would suggest? Certainly not.

Though the majority of Dario Argento's earlier films are more or less universally loved by horror fans, not even the biggest supporter of his work can deny that the Italian maestro has lost something along the way.

As someone who discovered Suspiria on VHS at age nine (after picking the name off the box art for Terror in the Aisles nonetheless), you better believe this writer was more than thrilled to hop on the phone with legendary filmmaker Dario Argento to talk about his latest feature, Dracula 3D.

Considered the Godfather of Giallo, Argento has been the creative force behind numerous influential Italian films including The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, and Opera.

Say it ain’t so Dario, say it ain’t so. Once upon a time, I thought the worst thing that could happen to vampires was Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight plight, but since seeing Dracula 3D, I know more threats to the vampire genre lurk in the shadows besides Mormon writers. Sadly, Dario Argento’s latest directorial effort shows no signs of the influential director of old, coming off as a campy SyFy type movie with so many downsides that it’s hard deciding where to start. Mr. Argento, I respect your name and legacy, and acknowledge everything you’ve given to the horror genre, but out of respect to you, if you’re reading this, I sincerely suggest you stop reading right now. It only gets worse – oh, so worse.

I’m not going to pretend that Dracula 3D is going to be a blockbuster or an Oscar contender, but there is a place for the B sci-fi movie that embraces its B-ness. And I really get a kick out of a good B vampire movie now and again. As long as you go into this movie prepared I think it will be highly enjoyable.

Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D was acquired by IFC Films last year and they’ve announced a VOD and limited theatrical release date for the movie. We’ll see the movie released to VOD and a limited number of theater locations on October 4th, according to Fangoria. It’s also being reported that the title has been changed to “Argento’s Dracula.” There’s no word on a Blu-ray/DVD release, but we should hear about it later this year.

IFC Midnight has debuted two clips from Dracula 3D, the latest from horror legend Dario Argento. Unax Ugalde stars as Jonathan Harker, who leaves his fiancee Mina (Marta Gastini) behind to work for Count Dracula (Thomas Kretschmann). The first scene features Rutger Hauer as vampire slayer Van Helsing, who comes to ward off Lucy, played by the director's daughter, Asia Argento. The second clip is restricted to those over the age of 18, featuring Harker and the new vampire Tania (Miriam Giovanelli), who is determined to please her new houseguest.

Dario Argento – a master of horror? Perhaps at one point. The Suspiria and Inferno director is gearing up for the Us release of his latest, Dracula 3D, but after catching these two clips of the film, you may want to steer clear of the 2013 IFC Midnight entry. Asia Argento, Marta Gastini, Rutger Hauer, Thomas Kretschmann and Unax Ugalde star in this re-telling of Bram Stoker's classic tale which is opening in Italy soon.  IFC picked the film up for a U.S. release.

I don't know, guys, this movie is looking rough.  It looks very "television" - the lighting isn't helping and the production design looks cheap.  I'm trying not to knock it before I've tried it, but...ouch.

IFC continues its reign of terror with its genre-centric label IFC MIdnight by snatching up the rights to both Dario Argento's 3D version of Dracula and the Jeffrey Combs/Sasha Grey flick Would You Rather.

Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D screened earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and we’ve been waiting to hear about the movie’s Us release plans. It is now being reported that the film has been acquired for Us distribution. IFC Films has picked up the movie for its IFC Midnight label, according to Fangoria. While a specific release date has not been set, expect it some time in 2013 and we’ll have more release details in the very near future.

Sitting in a theater watching a fair few people walk out in protest at the poor quality of Dracula 3D, you have to wonder whether they knew anything about horror legend Dario Argento, and if so what exactly they expected from the director whose name alone guarantees an audience. Because Argento has a certain set of skills, which aren’t necessarily reconcilable with what is great about film these days, but to give due credit, he hasn’t really deviated from the same tracks for decades, and the result is generally an entertaining affair all the same. The first true trailer for Dario Argento's Dracula 3D is here and it looks ... well ... there's owls, wolves, vampires and his lovely daughter, Asia. Just how well all of these components put together will fare is completely up for debate.

I can't really say I was expecting much, but the trailer for Dario Argento's Dracula 3D doesn't have me interested in the slightest. Lame CG effects are one thing, but I don't see anything that would make me think Argento was coming at this age old story with anything other than the 3D gimmick. Starring Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula, Asia Argento, Marta Gastini, Unax Ugalde, Miriam Giovanelli and Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing, the film appears to be no more than the traditional take on Bram Stoker's "Dracula" with awful CG effects and very lame line-reading. The pic is set to be screened as part of the Midnight selection at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and will have its first screenings on Sunday, May 20, but I can't really say I'm going to make it a priority. Publicity for the films that will be playing at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival is beginning and I have just received three new images from three anticipated films playing the fest. I'll begin with the above shot from Michael Haneke's Amour, which stars Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant as a pair of cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter (Isabelle Huppert), who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack after which the couple's bond of love is severely tested. Alexandre Tharaud also stars. Based on the synopsis, there isn't really much this film can likely convey in terms of pictures, though I do expect Darius Khondji, who also served as Haneke's cinematographer on his English-language remake of Funny Games, will deliver some images well worth looking at. Italian maestro Dario Argento’s latest is Dracula 3D, starring Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing, Asia Argento as Lucy, Marta Gastini as Mina, Unax Ugalde as Johnathan Harker, and Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula. The film, shot in Hungary last year, is reported to be more Hammer than Coppola, and judging by footage shared thus far, it certainly does look like a violent and sexy take on the classic tale.

A few months back we shared the first footage of the picture, and today a new teaser trailer was released, giving a little further insight into Argento’s vision. In addition, 40 (!) images have been released, a nice mix of stills and production shots, that tell the real story of just what is in store with this controversial outing from “Italy’s Hitchcock.” The film is set for release later this year.
