In The Tomorrow Man, John Lithgow plays Ed, a retiree doomsday prepper who lives alone and spends his days stocking up for the coming end of civilization and posting online to his like-minded followers, when he’s not on the phone arguing with his son, who does not get the whole prepper thing. One day at the grocery store, Ed spots a pretty older woman (Blythe Danner) buying the same kind of things he buys – batteries, canned tuna – and when she pays with cash, he thinks he has found a kindred spirit. Instantly smitten, he contrives a way to meet her.

Andrew Slater’s music documentary Echo In The Canyon opened with a bang in two Los Angeles theaters over the Memorial holiday weekend, crooning out the second-highest opening weekend per theater average of 2019, solidifying further non-fiction as the star genre among the specialties so far this year.
The Greenwich Entertainment release grossed a three-day estimate of $103,716 from its showings at the ArcLight Hollywood and The Landmark in West L.A., giving the title a $51,858 PTA. The year’s top debut average remains with Avengers: Endgame at $76,601 in over forty-six hundred theaters. It is also the best PTA for a doc this year.
Echo In The Canyon debuted at last year’s final Los Angeles Film Festival where Greenwich first viewed the feature. The film celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of La’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-’60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys,...

“The Tomorrow Man” sounds like a 1970s sci-fi film about a guy who predicts the future, but Noble Jones’ feature debut is kind of exactly the opposite, the story a guy whose fixation on the future keeps him from fully experiencing the present.
It’s a mostly thoughtful character study that falters only by failing to scrutinize fully the central character’s toxic, paranoid worldview. Nevertheless, the film makes some astute observations about the coping mechanisms we use to protect ourselves from the world, with Jones eliciting solid performances from John Lithgow and Blythe Danner as two troubled senior citizens embarking on a tenuous courtship.
Lithgow plays Ed, a lonely forced retiree who fills his days preparing for a sociopolitical apocalypse both physically (filling a hidden panic room with canned goods and gasoline) and philosophically, presiding over dark-web chatrooms with ominous declarations. Desperate for real-world interaction after exhausting even his son Brian with endless,...

Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for the upcoming drama The Tomorrow Man. Written and directed by Noble Jones, the film stars John Lithgow as a doomsday prepper who meets and falls in love with a woman (played by Blythe Danner) who’s still grieving over the death of her daughter. The story finds these two lonely souls with opposite outlooks—one obsessed with the future, one fixated on the past—coming together and trying to build a relationship together. This looks like a nice movie. Lithgow and Danner are both reliable talents, and it looks like this film …...

"These are interesting times we're living in. All you have to do is learn to connect the dots, and get ready." Bleecker Street Media has debuted the first official trailer for indie dramedy The Tomorrow Man, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This heartfelt, awkward romance is about a kooky elderly "doomsday prepper" man named Ed, and a humble "hoarder" woman named Ronnie who he meets and falls in love with. John Lithgow stars, with Blythe Danner, and a cast including Derek Cecil, Katie Aselton, Sophie Thatcher, and Eve Harlow. I caught this at Sundance earlier this year (read the review), and it has an awkward charm to it, that sinks in as it plays out. It's a nice little film - worth a watch. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Noble Jones' The Tomorrow Man, direct from YouTube: Ed Hemsler (John...

The apocalypse is coming, and there's no better way to prepare for that future than to build an overstocked fallout shelter in your home. Right? That's not crazy, is it? Totally sane. Some people think that this is just being properly prepared. The Tomorrow Man is a dramatic comedy from writer & director Noble Jones that just premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It's an eccentric, amusing film with a romantic twist that is about an aging man who lives a quiet, lonely life in a small town. Jones' film is kinda-sorta mocking these "doomsday preppers", as they're known - the people who build special shelters and fill it with all kinds of extra food and supplies and survival equipment - because the media (and others from the internet) have made them think something is about to happen and they should be ready for everything to fall apart - soon. Several “red flags” went up for John Lithgow when he first heard about his latest project “The Tomorrow Man.” The film by director Noble Jones was an independent film from a first-time feature film director, who would be shooting it in addition to writing it.
But Jones is an accomplished music video director for Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Mary J. Blige, and he can also boast having David Fincher as a mentor. And when Lithgow read the screenplay and found out his co-star would be none other than Blythe Danner, he was sold.
“Should I take the chance,” Lithgow told TheWrap’s Steve Pond ahead of its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. “And then I got together with Noble, and there’s something about him, you just trust this is going to be great. And he also comes out of a long history with David Fincher. We found...

IndieWire’s First-Time Filmmakers Dinner at the Sundance Film Festival, presented by Rimowa, took place on January 28 and introduced a new crop of talent you can expect to see more of in the years to come. “We know that being a first-time filmmaker is something very personal to you, and you’re in the middle of this journey,” IndieWire’s Eric Kohn said at the event. “We get excited to tell the world about it, so we expect to hear more from you down the line. One of the most gratifying things about going to Sundance is coming back and seeing people back here and seeing what you do next.”
Countless filmmakers have gotten their start at the festival, from Quentin Tarantino and Nicole Holofcener to Ryan Coogler and Steven Soderbergh, making it an especially fitting venue for such an occasion.

John Lithgow and Blythe Danner command the screen in everything they do, but “The Tomorrow Man” really pushes those limits. Writer-director Noble Jones’ debut is a cute, confused blend of senior love and apocalyptic dread. There’s an intriguing mystery at the center of this wistful story, as frantic divorcee Ed Hemsler attempts to share his wild conspiracy theories with Ronnie (Danner), the fellow loner he meets at the local grocery store. Set in ambiguous small-town America, “The Tomorrow Man” suggests “Take Shelter” by way of “It’s Complicated,” an unseemly combination that never quite gels. But the actors work overtime to mine substance from the material, and Jones gives them plenty of room to rescue this curious movie from complete oblivion.
But oblivion is Ed’s greatest fear: Spending long hours holed up in his quiet home, he wastes his days posting his paranoid observations in an online forum under the moniker “Captain Reality,...

There’s a sly mood of imminent surprise to music-video director Noble Jones’ narrative feature debut “The Tomorrow Man.” John Lithgow and Blythe Danner play somewhat eccentric older small-town denizens drawn together, though each has a secret life that could be a deal-breaker.
Once we suss what those secrets are, it becomes clear that this is really just a cute autumnal romance cloaked in a little mystery that only goes so deep. If the ultimate effect is a little more slight than one might’ve hoped, Jones and his appealing cast nonetheless sustain a low-key charm even after the enigmatic initial promise burns off like morning fog. Prospects will be modest for Bleecker Street’s pre-Sundance pickup, which is slotted for a May 17 theatrical release.

Arri’s dominance in scripted narrative filmmaking would appear to have somehow only grown at Sundance this year. IndieWire polled 50 of the 55 features playing in four sections, and 41 of those 50 films shot using Arri’s Alexa Mini. A handful of films either mixed the Mini with the more built out Alexa Xt or the shoulder-friendly Amira, or relied solely on the Amira and Xt, both of which utilize the same sensor to capture images as the Mini. Meanwhile, the Michelle Williams-starrer “After the Wedding” went with the larger format Arri camera, the Alexa 65, which was recently used by Alfonso Cuaron on “Roma.”
The Alexa chip won over cinematographers years ago with its filmic feel and naturalist color reproduction, while the indie world has been quick to adapt to the smaller bodied Alexa, the Mini, for not only its lower prices tag (at least compared to the Xt), but also...

There are few acquisition festivals quite like Sundance, where movies enter as unknowns and leave as Oscar hopefuls with million-dollar deals backing them. 2018 titles that went on to critical and financial success included “Searching,” “Sorry to Bother You,” “Eighth Grade,” and “Blindspotting”; though not as high-profile as the likes of “Call Me by Your Name” or “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” such films serve as a reminder of Park City’s importance in shaping the year in movies.

Author Bret Easton Ellis has long maintained a touchy relationship with Mary Harron's "American Psycho" starring Christian Bale. "I...don’t think really works as a film," he said back 2013, arguing that the very construct of Patrick Bateman becomes compromised when realized in a movie. However, people might've forgotten that a couple of years earlier, Ellis himself was throwing his weight behind a feature film remake from Noble Jones, a second unit director on "The Social Network" (the author wanted Scott Disick or Miles Fisher for the lead role). That project fizzled (as did a potential prequel series), but Ellis is now mounting a Broadway take on "American Psycho." And in an interview in Rolling Stone, Ellis reveals that before Harron made her film, he had a written a script with some heavyweight talent involved. The David Fincher protege (he's a frequent presence on Fincher's movie sets, shadowing the director, and Noble was the second unit director on Fincher's The Social Network), is based in Los Angeles, and has won numerous awards recognition for his work in the worlds of advertising, documentary filmmaking and music videos, for the likes of clients like At&T, Proctor & Gamble, Coca Cola, Sears and more. He's also a musician himself as well. Clearly, a talent to be familiar with, if you're not already. I wasn't before today, and based on the few clips of...

Back in December of 2011 it was announced that Noble Jones, a music video and commercial director, would be writing and directing a modern remake of "American Psycho," based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel that was adapted once before by director Mary Harron (with a wonderful Christian Bale in the iconic lead role of '80s psychopath Patrick Bateman). Well, those plans have seemingly faltered (despite an endorsement by Ellis himself) but Bateman will be back, only this time on television. FX is developing an "American Psycho" sequel series for prime time. Oh don't worry, it gets even weirder. The new series isn't set in the '80s like the original (the novel, published in 1991, was one of the seminal accounts of the decade, second only to probably Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities"), but instead takes place in present day. Instead of just shifting the actions of the...

Whenever a movie studio announces plans for another remake, the reaction among fans and pundits is always the same: Hollywood doesn't have any new ideas.
But we like to look on the bright side of things, which is why we're so happy when we hear of a cool remake or reboot. Hey, who needs new ideas when there are already so many great old ideas waiting to be rediscovered?
With that in mind, we've compiled a list of 50 — that's right, 50! — upcoming Hollywood remakes that tickle our fancy. Because if these films were good the first time, you never know, you might just enjoy them even more the second time around.

Though the three members of Lady Antebellum are now happily married, they easily dial into those feelings of unrequited love on “Wanted You More.” The song’s dramatic video is filled with dark shadows, a grey palette, nude headless bodies, tree stumps, and a magical butterfly, but mainly faces full of longing and angst. We’re still not sure about the burning piano. It’s a little bit of the apocalypse in an otherwise moody, but non-climactic clip that seems a little out of place with the color scheme if nothing else. [More after the jump...] The video, directed by Noble Jones, was shot...

Technically speaking, there is a sequel to the 2000 thriller American Psycho, but it had nothing to do with Wall Street anti-hero and serial killer Patrick Bateman as personified by Christian Bale. American Psycho II: All American Girl was a cheap direct-to-dvd knock off starring Mila Kunis that only had a minor connection to Bret Easton Ellis' original creation.
The novel was published in 1991, and the film adaptation quickly became a cult hit upon its release on April 14th of 2000. Due to both the film and novel's popularity, Patrick Bateman is considered an icon of sorts, and for years, fans have asked for a sequel. Bret Easton Ellis has never obliged, but that may soon change. When posed with the question "What would Patrick Bateman be doing right now? Here, in 2012?" A question that has arisen far too many times in the past couple of years, Bret Easton Ellis decided...

Of all the remakes to be announced in the last little while, Lionsgate's do-over of "American Psycho" has generated the most (outraged) chatter. Already deemed a contemporary classic starring a wickedly deranged Christian Bale and directed with finesse by Mary Harron, the film took the source novel's satircal edge to its logical ends. Anyway, the story is being updated to contemporary New York by commercials and music video director Noble Jones (who also helmed the Grammy nominated "10 Days Out: Blues From The Backroad"), and of all people, it's the author Bret Easton Ellis who has become a champion of sorts for the movie. The Twitter-happy writer hit his account yesterday to declare, "Haters beware: I just had a long discussion with Noble Jones, the writer/director of the "new" American Psycho movie. His take is genuine..." He doesn't elaborate any further, but it seems the generally outspoken Ellis is pleased (at least so.

It is not as if American Psycho is hallowed ground, like Casablanca or Gone With The Wind. It is just that a remake is so very unnecessary. Although the original came out over a decade ago, it was set in the 1980′s and so it can’t really be argued to be dated. It looks as though the planned remake will be set in a more contemporary New York, possibly addressing how the city has changed since the milieu of the book and original film. That is all well and good, though it could be argued that the milieu of the original was part of its distinctive quality and that to take the story out of that environment does more than a little violence to Bret Easton Ellis’s work.

The movie that first made us sit up and take notice of the acting chops of Christian Bale and forever changed our perception of the '80s pop song "Hip to Be Square" by Huey Lewis and the News, American Psycho, is getting a modern-day remake. According to Variety, Lionsgate is "in the early stages of development" on a new, low-budget adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 dark psychological thriller and satirical novel about a yuppie serial killer that inspired the Bale-led movie. The project was originally pitched to Lionsgate by commercial director and David Fincher protége Noble Jones, who recently submitted a script to the studio and is on tap to direct.

Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja will helm the big screen version of Joe Hill’s second novel, Horns, for Mandalay Pictures. Hill, by the way, is the oldest son of best selling author Stephen King. There is hope that the film will be shot this coming summer.
After Steven Soderbergh jumped ship from Warner Bros. big screen adaptation of the classic 60s TV spy series The Man From U.N.C.L.E due to ‘creative’ differences, and George Clooney exited as well, the studio scrambled to find a replacement. The movie has been stuck in developmental hell for some time, and there was a possibility the film could get shelved again. Now word has come that Guy Richie will helm the film. It is likely that this will be his follow-up to Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. As for casting, it seems every hot male actor under the sun is being sought.

Christian Bale became a worldwide superstar as the Caped Crusader in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman films. Before then, back in 2000 in fact, Bale gave one of the most powerful performances of his career in writer/director Mary Harron’s bloody adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ investment banker-turned-serial killer dark comedy American Psycho. Harron’s American Psycho, which featured Reese Witherspoon, Chloë Sevigny and Samantha Mathis in addition to Bale as the murderous Patrick Bateman, was a Sundance Film Festival sensation that year. Variety reported today that Lionsgate bought Noble Jones’ remake pitch and hired him to write and direct the low-budget reboot.
