"What matters here is being loved, child, not loving..." Buffalo 8 Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie romantic musical titled Love Gets a Room, the latest film made by Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Cortés (best known for directing both Buried and Red Lights a decade ago). This first premiered in Spain in 2021, but is only now getting an official US release this summer. Inspired by true events during the 1942 Nazi occupation of Poland, Love Gets a Room is the story of a Jewish stage actress who must make the gut-wrenching decision to follow her heart or escape the Warsaw ghetto. Told in real time like Cortés' acclaimed Buried, the film is a romantic tale of love and survival in the face of harrowing circumstances. This stars Clara Rugaard, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Mark Ryder, Anastasia Hille, Magnus Krepper, and Henry Goodman. With cinematography by Rafa García. "With masterful direction and outstanding performances,...

UFC fighter Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone stars in the upcoming zombie film Project Legion, which is set to receive a theatrical release on October 7th, with an Apple TV release following just four days later on October 11th. With those dates just a few weeks away, a trailer for Project Legion has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Lance Kawas (Good Thief) directed Project Legion from a screenplay he crafted with John Sullivan, Michael Pizzimenti, and James Raptoplous. Apparently they put together quite an epic, because Apple has the movie listed with a running time of 2 hours and 38 minutes. The story told over those 158 minutes has the following synopsis:
Feral creatures that prey on humans have descended upon the city. A furious fight for survival begins as the outside world descends into chaos and a former Marine (UFC superstar Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone), barricaded inside his apartment, prepares to come out fighting.

For a significant portion of the The Argument’s running time, there’s a sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop. The set up for the film isn’t particularly strong, and all throughout the first act, it’s hard not to feel like the production is going through the motion. It actually isn’t until the third act that things kick into gear, especially in terms of getting unique and weird. So, as the flick opens today, the question before me is the following: is one really good act enough to warrant a recommendation? It depends on the title in question, but for The Argument, the answer is a low-key yes. The movie is a comedy, focusing on a small group of people and the rather unusual situation they find themselves in. When Jack (Dan Fogler) and Lisa (Emma Bell) disagree in the opening scene, it seems...

"I made a pie!" Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Argument, the latest from actor / musician / director Robert Schwartzman. The Argument follows Jack and his girlfriend, Lisa as they get into an argument during a get together with some friends over wine and charcuterie in their apartment after the final night of a play. As the argument escalates, the party comes to an end and all their friends leave — but the party isn't really over. Jack and Lisa recreate the party over and over again — with all their guests — in order to figure out who was right. Dan Fogler and Emma Bell star, with Maggie Q, Danny Pudi, Cleopatra Coleman, Karan Brar, Marielle Scott, Charlotte McKinney, Tyler James Williams, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Mark Ryder. This is a pretty clever concept for a film, recreating a party just to settle an argument, of course it...

This is the Pure Movies review of Good Vibrations, directed by Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, starring Jodie Whittaker, Dylan Moran, Richard Dormer, Adrian Dunbar, Mark Ryder, Andrew Simpson and Demetri Goritsas. Reviewed by Dan Higgins for @puremovies. "New York have the haircuts, London have the trousers, Belfast has the reason" shouts Terri Hooley across a crowded Ulster Hall. The fact that his guest list for the fundraising concert is so big that he's making a loss on the door doesn't affect him. This was the Woodstock of Belfast Punk. When Hooley opened Good Vibrations records on Great Victoria Street a year or so into the troubles in Belfast, he was going against the norm. Everyone was leaving Belfast, nobody was starting up businesses. But Hooley would never have predicted what came next.

★★★★☆ Borgia (2011) is a grand costume drama charting the torrid loves and tangled political lives of the infamous, self-promoting 15th century Italian dynasty. Starring Isolda Dychauk as the legendary Lucrezia Borgia, Mark Ryder and Stanley Weber as her brothers Cesare and Juan and John Doman as Rodrigo Borgia, this glossy miniseries, though breathtaking in scope and visually tantilising in its reproduction of period detail, is equally hard to stomach with its graphic interpretation of the brutality and hardships of this bloody period in Europe's history.

It's Complicated: "The most revealing moment in writer-director Nancy Meyers' It's Complicated is when Jane Adler (Meryl Streep) visits her shrink to plead for advice about the affair she's caught up in. Though she's been divorced for ten years, she's recently taken up with her ex, who's got a new young wife of his own, and the resulting fling has Jane feeling guilty. Turning to a mental health professional for judgment about whether her actions have been evil or not, she's told: "It's not good. It's not bad." That's about all that can be said for Meyers' film, which is the latest in a line of wish-fulfillment movies that place as much emphasis on set design as story, and seem almost adorably unaware of actual struggles and real-world emotions. It's Complicated is certainly pleasant enough, full of happy actors and easy characters, and it's even got a few small laughs,...

A world away from the overblown, star vehicles of the nineties, the likes of Patriot Games, The Devils Own, and Blown Away, 2008 saw a rash of small, intimate dramas about "The Troubles" - the innocuous sounding name given to the period of ethnic violence surrounding Northern Ireland, circa late 1960's to late 1990's, during which some 3500 people were killed. Prison drama Hunger showcased the staggering levels of self-destruction people were prepared to commit to in service to ideology, Fifty Dead Men Walking explored the conflicted loyalty and paranoia of an undercover operative, and here Five Minutes of Heaven, easily the simplest of the three and yet the most ambitious, charts the cyclical nature of violence and our struggle to break free from it.

Chicago – “Five Minutes of Heaven” is a good film with the potential to be a great one. Though it garnered prizes for its writing and direction at Sundance, it’s precisely the work of screenwriter Guy Hibbert and director Oliver Hirschbiegel that makes the film occasionally falter. This material may have worked better as a two-man play featuring the same two stars, whose brilliant performances help the picture succeed in spite of itself.
The cycle of terrorist violence between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland during the 1970s and 80s has been the subject of several recent pictures, yet “Heaven” may be the first to blatantly parallel the troubled time period with present day conflicts. That’s partly because much of the film is set in 2008, thirty-three years after an act of violence occurred that forever altered the lives of two men. Yet while Steve McQueen’s masterful Ira hunger...
