The Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons-starring sci-fi series Night Sky has been canceled by Amazon’s Prime Video after just one season. As reported by Deadline, the cancelation comes just a month and a half after the eight-episode first season debuted on the streamer. Despite positive reviews from critics, the series did not reach a high enough viewership to justify its expensive budget. Created by Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, Night Sky revolves around married couple Franklin (Simmons) and Irene York (Spacek), who discover a portal in their backyard that leads to a deserted planet. However, their carefully guarded secret is upended when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters the scene, revealing that the portal is much more than the Yorks ever imagined. In addition to Spacek and Simmons, the show also starred Kiah McKirnan, Beth Lacke, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, Stephen Louis Grush, Sonya Walger, Angus O’Brian,...

Well, it's official. Fox has cancelled Thursday night drama Gracepoint after one season. There won't be a second season on the network but there seems to be a small chance that it could continue elsewhere.

Victoria, BC. The description for Thursday (November 20) night's episode of "Gracepoint" mentions the unearthing of certain secrets about Jacki Weaver's Susan Wright, which is a good thing, because the dog-loving trailer park denizen remains one of the odder parts of Fox's 10-part mystery, and I'm saying that as a fan of "Broadchurch." I mean, the Susan Wright in "Broadchurch" was so odd she was almost literally played by an actress named "quirky" -- Pauline Quirke, if we're being truthful -- and two-time Oscar nominee Weaver has only upped the ante on quirky line-readings and unexplained menace. When I talked with Weaver on the "Gracepoint" set back in May, she was shy about discussing Susan, but she was very frank about this move into network television, Susan's difficult-to-place accent and pleasures of an unlikely career explosion following the Sundance premiere of "Animal Kingdom." I posted an exclusive clip from Thursday's episode here,...

Gracepoint, like its British successor Broadchurch, is named after the remote town where a young boy is murdered and several of its inhabitants become suspects. Unlike Broadchurch, though, the American reincarnation does not feel like a show defined by its setting. With the exception of a few establishing shots that show the majesty of the sea, one of the main issues with Gracepoint is how little of a personality or even an atmosphere the town creates within this drama.
This lack of personality is not a large hindrance on Gracepoint, but it shows how much feeling and tone the show lacks, especially in comparison to Broadchurch or any other murder-mystery with a small town setting. There are a few moments on the pier, yet the rest of this third episode stays indoors, in the police station where Ellie and Carver’s power struggle plays out and in the homes of...

The Broadchurch TV show was a success in the UK so Fox decided to remake it here -- with one of the same lead actors. Though Gracepoint is being promoted as a limited series, Fox will surely want to make a second season if it's a hit (as is being done with Broadchurch). What do you think? Should it be renewed or cancelled?

Catch Hell is an extremely personal dissection of celebrity culture straight from the mind of Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Phillippe, addressing the actor’s fall from mainstream grace. Phillippe comments on the seedy nature of celebutante social media usage, entitled actor egos and obsessed fandoms, but even amidst the gator-wrasslin’ and hostage beatings, Catch Hell becomes a smidge self-indulgent. Between a yokel’s fatal attraction and Phillippe’s almost martyr-like mentality, sympathy is the last emotion conjured by Ryan’s character Reagan Pearce (R.P. – clever). Yes, we’re supposed to care for the tormented actor who still lives a life of luxury despite his dimming spotlight, because everyone loves a Southern-fried redemption story that takes place in a Louisiana swamp, right?
Phillippe plays Reagan Pearce, a struggling actor desperate to regain his superstar status. In order to do so, Pearce must take a few roles that don’t scream blockbuster potential,...

The out-of-nowhere success of "Lost" in 2004-05 spawned a bunch of shows that attempted to replicate its formula in one way or another. There were the obvious, sci fi-tinged shows like ABC's "Invasion," CBS' "Threshold" and NBC's "Heroes" that looked to capitalize on a perceived appetite for "Lost's" more fantastical elements.
Some others, though, ditched the supernatural and went for the human side of "Lost": following characters who were bound together by a life-changing event. Shows like "The Nine," "Reunion" and to a lesser extent "Six Degrees" (which eschewed the "life-changing event" part to explore other, more esoteric connections). What they all had in common was that, with the exception of "Heroes" for its first couple of seasons, none of them really clicked with viewers.

Lucky 7 is yet another translation of British television for American audiences, and it’s about par for the course. While some efforts (mostly long ago and far away, with the exception of The Office) have come together to create long-lived, and beloved series, this isn’t an avenue of series creation that has a solid, recent track record.
Based on the British show, The Syndicate, it’s the story of a group of coworkers at a gas station who have been playing the same numbers for years, and fear for the jobs as rumors abound that the station is closing. All with their own monetary woes, which are laid out for us in great detail, this rag tag assortment of characters is about to find out that there are a lot of problems that come with their sudden riches.
The main trouble this show is going to have is in the translation of format.

Chicago – “Lucky 7,” debuting tonight on ABC to end their practically unprecedented attempt at an entire night of new programming, is a case of concept over actual character. The creators of this inert drama think cluttering their storytelling with various subplots will make up for the fact that you just don’t care about any of them. It’s a case of quantity over quality and that never works. I could be wrong but this one’s high on my list of shows that could be cancelled before Christmas.

At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Because… hellllooo… so many people watch them that we’re bringing them back. On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Maybe Olivia Pope needs to do some damage control for ABC, which brought back only two of the 10 shows it premiered last season. At the network’s upfront presentation on Tuesday, Kerry Washington appeared in a pre-taped clip as her character from Scandal, and offered advice to Anne Sweeney, the president of Disney/ABC Television Group, alongside Jimmy Kimmel. Discussing the problem of Dancing With the Stars, which took a ratings dip this season, Kimmel quipped, “For one thing, they’re not really stars.” There aren’t a ton of stars in ABC’s new lineup, either — but there are...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third announced earlier today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
The network is changing up some of its serialized dramas - removing random repeats in favor of two "uninterrupted runs" of twelve episodes each (one in the fall, one in the spring) for shows like "Once Upon A Time," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Scandal" and "Revenge". The large gaps between the two half-seasons will be bridged by "limited series" designed around only 12-13 episode seasons.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the high-profile "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" rip-off "Gothica", McG's rip-off of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" entitled "Westside", the series based on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain ride, the Annie Potts-led "Murder in Manhattan" about...

Winning the lottery -- it's the stuff of dreams. But for seven employees at a gas station in Queens, the dream is going to become a reality. Unfortunately for "Lucky 7," there may be a little bit of a nightmare included in this new ABC drama.
The story focuses on the employees of a gas station who have been chipping into a lottery pool for months with no expectation of winning. That's too bad -- they all need the money. Matt (Matt Long) needs to find a home for his girlfriend and kids. Matt's brother Nicky (Stephen Louis Grush) is a debt-ridden ex-con. Samira (Summer Bishil) just wants to go to Juilliard. Denise (Lorraine Bruce) would have the time to fix her marriage. The manager, Bob (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) wants to retire. Leanne (Anastasia Phillips) can help her daughter realize her dreams. And Antonio (Luis Antonio Ramos...

Great news from ABC: The network has ordered additional seasons of its soapy dramas Nashville, Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as another year of Castle.
The network also rounded out its drama orders by renewing Revenge and Once Upon A Time. On the comedy side, it’s bringing back Modern Family (no duh), The Middle, Suburgatory, Last Man Standing, and The Neighbors.
As for new shows, ABC announced the pickup of comedy Super Fun Night, a Rebel Wilson starrer about a junior attorney and her two best friends, who have a standing date every Friday night for the last 13 years.

Chicago – A film’s world premiere is an auspicious occasion. This upcoming Tuesday, at the Midwest Independent Film Festival, marks the narrative film debut of director Mark Rosengren, with his film “Lac du Flambeau.” Produced by local talent in Chicago, the feature was shot primarily in Freeport, Illinois.
Mark Rosengren did his undergrad and graduate work in film through Columbia College and the Art Institute in the Windy City. His first full-length film was a documentary, “I Write on Stuff,” which combined his love for graffiti art with the battle between the city of Chicago and his fellow graffiti artists.

“Lac du Flambeau” is Rosengren’s first narrative feature. If the title sounds familiar, it was inspired by the real Wisconsin lake, where the players in the film are journeying toward.
