Whoa. This short film from filmmaker Brent Bonacorso features a giant kaiju alien creature that arrives on Earth, but it's actually a story about finding ourselves. The Narrow World is a film about an alien visitor that settles in Los Angeles, but it's completely passive and silent in response to any interaction. "The best monsters are always metaphors, either for an outside force, or for an aspect of the human condition," Brent explains. "The latter is what inspired me here. The subconscious mind that drives our actions by brute force, but that we're most often completely unaware of. Something that feels alien to us, an incredibly powerful outsider that lives within us." I dig the visuals, and admire the message in this, it's definitely worth a watch. Thanks to Vice's Creators for the tip on this. Director Brent Bonacorso last graced these pages back in 2013 with his fantastic short film West of the Moon - a film loaded with imagery taken from dreams described to the director by children - and he returns now with the altogether different, though no less fantastic, scifi offering The Narrow World. The Narrow World is the story of a gigantic alien that crashes to Earth and takes up residence in Los Angeles. Contrary to expectations, when the alien is neither hostile towards the tiny humans around it, nor communicative in any way, it falls on the populace to decipher what, exactly, this visitor wants and what it means for them. One man sees more to it- a message, perhaps, that may tell us less...

Filmmaker selected director Brent Bonacorso for our 2011 25 New Faces list on the basis of his absolutely stunning short, West of the Moon. After playing the festival circuit, it recently premiered on Vimeo, where it became a Staff Pick and quickly scored over 65,000 views — “Way more views than in the festivals,” Bonacorso notes with amusement in an email. The film is above, and below is Eric Kohn’s write-up on the director from the Summer, 2011 print issue. — Sm When asked to cite their influences, many filmmakers reference icons. Why Watch? Feeling more like a folktale written by children than for children, this beautiful short from writer/director/animator Brent Bonacorso blends tongue-in-cheek fantasy with the CGI chops to layer a whimsical fiction on top of reality. Beyond the evocative name itself, West of the Moon feels a lot like what Georges Melies would make if he had today’s filmmaking tools. In the story, an old man regrets a lost love and details with absent-minded precision his adventures with a card-playing robot and a monkey on a mission. Playfully heartbroken in its execution, there are touches of Tarsim Singh’s The Fall and Big Fish here, but Bonacorso proves to have a style all his own — painting with just about every color on the palette and inventing visuals with Dp Tarin Anderson that command attention while defying logic. Plus, lead actor Jacob Whitkin truly brings the old man to life solely through his movements and...

Monsters is a low-budget indie extraterrestrial invasion drama that put filmmaker Gareth Edwards’ name on the map, leading to him securing a job as director on the Hollywood Godzilla franchise reboot (which began principal photography this month).
Shooting has commenced on the followup to Edwards’ breakout project, which is going under the title Monsters: Dark Continent. Edwards never intended to write and/or direct either the sequel or any potential spinoffs, but is still executive producing the venture alongside producer-distributor Vertigo Films (which was also a backer on the original movie) and management/production company 42.
The personnel lineup has changed, since the last time we reported on the Monsters sequel nearly two years ago. Directing duties are no longer being handled by Jesse Atlas and Brent Bonacorso (the short “Now and Nowhere”), ...

For a while it didn't look like a sequel to Monsters was going to happen. Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas were attached to direct the film but there hasn't been any movement on the project since. We told you last week that Tom Green (Misfits) is taking the reins on the newly titled film Monsters: Dark Continent, a sequel to the popular Gareth Edwards film that was more love story than horror movie, and now we have the plot details served up hot and ready!
Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas had originally been attached to direct the sequel, but obviously things have changed. Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo.
Synopsis
Seven years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain with disparate communities struggling for survival. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect Us interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won.

Gareth Edwards’ 2010 indie film, Monsters, was by far one of the best feature debuts in recent memory. The writer-director brought us a fantastic vision of an alien-invaded world in the BAFTA-nominated sci-fi rarely, if ever, seen on screen.
Vertigo Films announced last year their intentions to develop a sequel, and word now comes that Misfits director, Tom Green, is due to make his feature debut with the sequel, now titled, Monsters: Dark Continent.
Edwards himself has since boarded the Godzilla remake for Legendary Pictures, which has David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Rises) rewriting the script, and announced last summer that he’s also been developing an as-yet-untitled film that he’ll both write and direct, describing it as,
“an epic human story set in a futuristic world without humanity.”
Edwards will be staying on as producer, but the prospect of having Green behind the camera for the second time around sounds very intriguing.

Gareth Edwards' Monsters looks to be closer to getting a sequel. Earlier we reported that Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas were to make their feature film directorial debut. Screen Daily reports that up-and-coming director Tom Green is now set to helm the sequel officially titled Monsters: The Dark Continent.
At this time we don't have an official production start date. While I am anxious to see a sequel, I am happy that Vertigo Films is not rushing out a sequel just to make a quick buck. Green gained a lot of attention with his student film Brixton 85 and has since directed the British superhero drama Misfits. Thi will be his first feature film directing gig.

Back in 2010, director Gareth Edwards released his "Monsters" movie, a low-budget thriller that went on to gross $4 million at the box office, but also impressed lots of major studios. At this point, Edwards is developing the upcoming "Godzilla" reboot for Warners Bros and is also working on a "Monsters" sequel. Edwards always planned to return to produce, handing over helming duties to Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas, who mostly directed short films in the past. But now comes word that Bonacorso and Atlas are out and Tom Green ("Misfits") has been brought on to replace them. The sequel is called "Monsters: Dark Continent" and focuses on a teacher who enters the infected zone of the city to find his brother. Now word when filming will begin.

Director Gareth Edwards' Monsters was one of the best slow-burn indie thrillers in recent years, so it was no surprise when Edwards was given Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot, or when a Monsters sequel was announced. Edwards wouldn't direct it, but executive produce. The new directors were to be Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. That appears to have changed however. More after the jump. Our friends at Shock Till You Drop have just discovered via Screen Daily that a new director is being brought on to helm the Monsters sequel, currently titled Monsters: Dark Continent. If you were a fan of Gareth Edwards' flick Monsters and enjoy seeing creatures hug, we've got some good news for you ... another flick is on the way to expand upon the world laid out by Edwards. Hopefully said world can go in a darker direction.

Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas had originally been attached to direct the sequel, but obviously things have changed. Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo.
The original sequel synopsis read as follows - The tale is set in a walled city, as a “Heart of Darkness” story about two brothers finding each other in a world of monsters. The variety of aliens will differ in the next installment.
More on this one as it comes.

Any mixed feelings surrounding this project would never mean anything. Sure, most people enjoyed Gareth Edwards‘ debut, Monsters — it even got him a slightly bigger creature feature — and would like things to remain “at that,” but director-approved plans for a sequel have been in motion for almost 18 months; last we heard, two directors had even been signed.
Now? It’s still moving along, but the creative assembly has shifted around.
Instead of newcomers Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas, Tom Green (different one) will make his feature debut on Monsters: The Dark Continent, which we’ve heard would follow “a teacher who lives in a walled city heading into the infected zone to find his brother, who used to be a part of the military before going crazy.” (I’ve already jumped to a not-so-unfair conclusion that Africa. Many others probably have, too.) Jay Basu, another relative unknown, will be writing the screenplay.

Gareth Edwards’ 2010 movie “Monsters” was a surprise hit, though frankly, it’s a tad dull for my tastes. The film looks like what it was — a 90-minute reel for Edwards on what he can do with monsters on a budget. There were long stretches of the film where I dozed off, only to be awaken by spurts of monster action here and there. But hey, everyone seems to love it, so what do I know? Anyways, a sequel, inevitably, is on the way, and it’s now gotten an official title, along with a new director. The sequel will go by the title, “Monsters: The Dark Continent”. Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas were originally attached to helm the sequel, but have apparently given up the gig to Tom Green (no, not that Tom Green, this one is a writer/director who has done multiple episodes of the Brit superhero...

Tom Green, a helmer of various episodes of British superhero comedy series "Misfits", has been named as director for a follow-up to Gareth Edwards' low-budget sci-fi feature hit "Monsters" at Vertigo Films reports Screen Daily (via Styd).
The original followed a couple trying to escape Central America which had been quarantined due to an invasion of alien creatures.
Reports emerged a year ago that the sequel would involve a teacher living in a protected walled city who has to go into the infected zone to find his long-lost brother.

Two years ago, the buzz started for Gareth Edwards' phenomenal indie sci-fi film Monsters, a character based film following two Americans trying to travel across an area of Central America devastated and inhabited by gigantic, and strangely mesmerizing, alien creatures. It was truly a unique indie gem, had some great special effects for such a low budget film, and even helped Edwards land a gig directing a new take on Godzilla for Legendary Pictures. Well, we also heard a sequel was in development almost exactly a year later, but without Edwards attached to direct. But now we have an update on the gestating project. Read on! Though Brent Bonacorso, of a short called West of the Moon, and Jesse Atlas were said to direct last May, Screen Daily (via The Playlist) recently talked with some up and coming talents from around the world (including Attack the Block star John Boyega...

Roughly about a year ago, Vertigo Films - a UK-based production outfit - announced its intentions to sequelize Gareth Edwards' Monsters.
Edwards - while rebooting Godzilla for Legendary Pictures - was on board to executive produce and the film was going to introduce audiences to a teacher living in a protected walled city, who has to go into the infected zone to find his long-lost brother, a former military man who is now a Col. If you recall, the original concerned a couple trying to escape Central America, which had been quarantined due to an invasion of alien creatures.
At the time, Vertigo had locked in Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas to helm the sequel, but it appears a new director has been brought on board.

One of the surprises of last year was Gareth Edwards' ultra low-budget sci-fi tale "Monsters" from Vertigo Films. While Edwards has moved onto other things, the studio behind it intends to press forward with a sequel and Bleeding Cool has the first details. Talking up the project at Cannes, producer Alan Niblo says the story will be set in the same world as the first. While the actual plot wasn't revealed beyond the focus being on a pair of brothers, he says it will be akin to Joseph Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness" which would mean a trip along a river into the heart of the alien-filled territory. Director Gareth Edwards debuted his indie sci-fi film Monsters at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The film was shot guerrilla-style, and was a very low-budget venture, clocking in at about $500,000 and managed to score $4.2 million worldwide at the box office. Edwards is currently prepping to direct Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros’ forthcoming Godzilla reboot, and the director also has an untitled sci-fi thriller that is being co-produced by director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Vikrutasi) and Jim Lemley (9) in the pipeline.
Now, ScreenDaily reports that Vertigo Films is ramping up the sequel to Edwards’ Monsters. The director will not be helming the sequel, Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas (Now and Nowhere) have stepped in to the directors chair on the follow-up.

Greetings, meatsacks. Amazingly, you haven't been killed for your rank incompetence and failure to meet even the most basic standards of humanity. For that, I'll give you some miscellaneous trade news. I hope it makes you vomit out your internal organs.
First, Phillip Noyce, a director whose resume would most aptly be described as serviceable, has a new project. Mr. Noyce most recently directed Salt, a goofy film that was actually kind of watchable, though that might be due to the presence of Liev Schrieber, and also directed middling efforts like The Bone Collector and A Clear And Present Danger (though to his credit, he also directed the amazing Rabbit Proof Fence). Anyway, he's getting on the reboot/remake bandwagon, and he'll be tackling ... Bloodsport. Yes, the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme kickboxing flick that co-starred Forrest Whitaker (no, really) and the uber-badass Bolo Leung. I have no idea how to even...

It’s really no surprise that a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ surprise indie hit Monsters is on its way, but don’t expect Garreth Edwards to return in the directors chair, and why should he considering he has bigger plans ahead (Godzilla). UK distributor Vertigo Films, who is now developing Monsters 2 is assigning directing duties to the duo of Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas instead.
According to Screen Daily, Gareth Edwards and the original star Scoot McNairy will executive produce the film, and while there is still no word on casting, the film will be produced for a much higher budget ced for a much higher budget d on casting, ctors chair and why should he, considering he has bigger plans aheadthan the original.
Allan Niblo of Vertigo Films promises “lots more creatures” in this follow-up, and that many actors have expressed “quite a lot of interest” in starring in the film.

As much as I wish all low budget sci-fi movies could turn out to be awesome, I wasn't too terribly impressed with Monsters. It was fine, but forgettable, and I certainly never expected it would spawn a sequel. But that's just what's happened as the film is going forward, although without director Gareth Edwards. Rather he's being replaced by the duo of Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. No word on if any of the small cast is returning for the sequel, but it will take place inside the infected...

At the Cannes Film Festival this week, Screen Daily is reporting that original Monsters creator, Gareth Edwards, will not be directing sequel to the sleeper hit, and instead Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas have stepped in to helm the project.
Monsters 2 will still have Gareth Edwards serving as executive producer alongside actor Scoot McNairy and Vertigo Films' Rupert Preston.
This story will continue by introducing a teacher living in a protected walled city, who has to go into the infected zone to find his long-lost brother, a former military man who is now a Col. Kurtz-esque figure. Vertigo Films' Allan Niblo promises "lots more creatures" than the original.

In the wake of Gareth Edwards' film Monsters becoming a tidy little art-house sleeper last year, a sequel isn't exactly what we figured would happen, but I don't think anyone would say the development of one is surprising. UK distributor Vertigo Films is now developing Monsters 2 (thought that could well not be the finale title) with pre-sales and financing going on at Cannes. There is little more than some theoretical ideas and a handful of good intentions to report, but we do know that Gareth Edwards is giving up the director's chair to a duo: Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. Screen Daily [1], in one of the site's many Cannes scoops, says that Gareth Edwards and original star Scoot McNairy will exec produce the film, which will again take place in the 'infected zone' that was the location for most of the original. While there is no cast to announce at this point,...

U.K. based Vertigo Films announced Friday it is developing a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ sleeper hit Monsters.
Unfortunately, Edwards will only executive produce the follow-up, which will be directed by short film makers Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. Meanwhile, Edwards is directing Legendary Pictures’ reboot of Godzilla tentatively scheduled for 2012.
The sequel centers on a walled in city and two brothers who “find each other” in a sort of “Heart of Darkness” tale, according to Variety. The budget is being expanded from sub-$1 million to $5 million to up what producer Allan Niblo calls “the action ante,” and it will be much more of a “straight genre picture” than the last, which basically misses the point.
The original Monsters was a minimalist drama about two survivors stumbling through a North American “containment zone” filled with massive extra-terrestrials. I loved its intelligence and Daniel raved about its less-is-more approach in his review.

A sequel to Gareth Edwards’ surprise sleeper hit “Monsters” has been talked up for the last few months, but it’s now become official, with Vertigo Films assigning directing duties to the duo of Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. Apparently Edwards will stay on as a producer, though honestly, that probably just means he sorta gave his okay for them to make a sequel, as long as he continues to collect a nice paycheck out of it. And in any case, Edwards is pretty busy rebooting “Godzilla”, and from all accounts, he only ever did “Monsters” as a demo reel to get big-time Hollywood work, and he’s achieved that, so why go back? The plot of the “Monsters” sequel will find “a teacher living outside the walled quaratined zone in Central America and his brother whom he ventures into the region to find—a former military man who has...

A little unexpectedly, Vertigo Films has announced that they’re planning to make a sequel to last year’s brilliant film, Monsters, The Playlist reports.
However, with Edwards set to direct a new Godzilla film for Legendary Pictures, he won’t be returning as director for the project.
Monsters was hands down my favourite independent film of last year, and one of my favourite independent films of all time, and I’m in two minds about the announcement. On the one hand, getting a chance to see more of the world Edwards created in Monsters, if done well, could certainly be ineresting. On the other, in my eyes, Edwards’ creation was perfect, and isn’t especially in need of a sequel.
I will remain optimistic, though, and keep an open mind until the project develops any further. I truly love Monsters, so hopefully its sequel will be just as brilliant.

Gareth Edwards made a big impression with his directorial debut of Monsters last year, with Edwards writing, directing, shooting and designing the effects on a budget of $15,000 dollars. Edwards was quickly hired to direct an adaptation of Godzilla, which means he won't be directing the sequel to his debut movie.
Screen Daily reports that British distributor Vertigo Films is developing a Monsters sequel with Edwards serving as executive producer. Directors Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas, who previously worked on short movies together, will helm the sequel, which Monsters producer Allan Niblo revealed would have "lots more creatures" than the original.

Despite a costume redesign and a script overhaul, NBC's new Wonder Woman couldn't deflect enough bullets.
Although we've had no official word from Warner Bros TV, who were producing the show, it has reportedly been cancelled after negative feedback to test screenings of the pilot episode, starring Adrianne Palicki as the title character, Justin Bruening (Knight Rider remake) as Steve Trevor and Liz Hurley as villain Veronica Cale.
Tracie Thoms, who would have played Etta Candy, best friend of Wonder Woman's businesswoman persona Diana Themyscira, confirmed the rumours on her Twitter page, saying: "I am very sad that NBC passed on Wonder Woman. But that just goes to show you: There is no such thing as a sure thing in this biz."
David E. Kelley had scripted the series and there was gossip that it was too much like the idiosyncratic, neurotic and introspective Ally McBeal, which he created and wrote.

You likely know how much we thought of Gareth Edward’s excellent indie sci-fi drama Monsters last year. Well, while Edwards himself has moved on to even bigger creature features, Vertigo Films has decided that it really wants to make a sequel. While we’re not sure another trip to the infected zone is necessary, since the original was a beautifully self-contained little tale, the world that was created is certainly big enough to handle more stories. So directors Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas are on hand for a plot that finds a teacher living in a protected city who must journey into the alien-infested zone to find his long-lost military brother, who has become a Colonel Kurtz-type figure. According to Vertigo’s Allan Niblo, there will be a lot more creatures around this time. But before you start worrying too much, Edwards has signed off on the idea, and...

Last year, a $500,000 sci-fi movie called "Monsters" hit theaters and grossed over $4 million in addition to received great reviews. Vertigo Films has now announced that it will make a sequel to "Monsters" with commercial directors Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas at the helm. Gareth Edwards, who directed the first installment, will serve as executive producer along with "Monsters" actor Scoot McNairy. The sequel has a budget of around $5 million and will shoot in September in possibly Argentina. Earlier we reported that Gareth Edwards' Monsters was getting a sequel, but Vertigo Films was hiring a new director. He is currently a new version of Godzilla. The sequel will be the directorial debut of Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. Scoot Mcnairy will be involved as a producer on the film, but is not likely going to reprise his role. The new story will focus on a teacher who enters the infected zone of the city to find his brother.
Vertigo revealed that the sequel will have “lots more creatures” and that a number of actors have expressed “quite a lot of interest” in joining the cast. One thing staying the same is that the sequel will also have a low budget, less than $5million!
Edwards said the following in an earlier interview:

Released last year, Monsters was the little science fiction that could; sporting a miniscule budget, it became somewhat of a critical darling to do so much with very little. It also put British director Gareth Edwards on the map, so much so that Legendary Pictures has tasked him with the next attempt at an American Godzilla. A year later, Vertigo Films has announced that there will be a Monsters 2…but this time, Edwards will not be behind the camera.

Wait - there's a sequel to to the cult sci-fi hit Monsters in the works? Apparently so. Unfortunately, writer/director Gareth Edwards will not be returning, as he has moved on to helm Godzilla for Legendary out in Hollywood. Instead, "emerging hotshots" Brent Bonacorso, of a short called West of the Moon, and Jesse Atlas will take the reigns this time, with Edwards and the film's co-star Scoot McNairy at least executive producing. Very interesting news. The sequel will spend more time in the "infected zone" world that Monsters established. It will continue by introducing a teacher living in a protected walled city, who has to go into the infected zone to find his long-lost brother, a former military man who is now a "Col.

We already heard from Director Gareth Edwards that Vertigo Films would likely be making a sequel to his critically successful film Monsters (here), and Bloody-Disgusting has just confirmed those plans. Gareth Edwards won’t be directing this time as he’s busy setting up Legendary Pictures’ upcoming Godzilla reboot, and the duo of Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas will be taking over. Edwards will still be attached as a Producer on the film.
One of the best parts about the original film was Edward’s directing, and many are probably going to be worried the sequel won’t live up to the original, but those attached are hoping to keep the same quality. “We’re going to keep the same quality and intelligence of the first film and make it much more of a straight genre picture,” said Niblo. “Monsters 2′ will expand the world created in the original movie whilst upping the action ante.
