Writer, director and actress Annapurna Sriram’s celluloid fever dream has won over audiences at SXSW.

With her feature directorial debut Fucktoys, which won the fest’s Special Jury Award for a Multi-Hyphenate, Sriram told Deadline she hopes to make right-wing audiences “accidentally fall in love” with her queer, diverse cast of characters.

Sriram stars in her 16mm debut as AP, a fun-loving dominatrix who learns from a tarot reader (Big Freedia) that she’s been cursed, and the only way to lift the curse is to come up with $1,000 and sacrifice a baby lamb. Reuniting with her ex Danni (Sadie Scott), the pair hops around Trashtown to earn the fee while encountering some peculiar characters along the way.

“I sort of wrote the script out of feeling like I just want to be in a John Waters movie or a Gregg Araki movie or a Jim Jarmusch movie,” said Sriram.

Although LGBTQ representation was few and far in between among the headliners at this year’s SXSW, several indie darlings broke the industry’s cis-heteronormative mold to stand out.

With a title like “Fucktoys,” Annapurna Sriram’s directorial debut boldly announces its wild intentions. A provocative name like that has been known to backfire, especially as it can over-inflate one’s expectations for the gonzo filmmaking they’re about to witness. But Sriram’s movie — a grotesque odyssey through a place called Trashtown, which has shades of New Orleans and a hint of Los Angeles — is at least impressively strange. It’s the kind of project that, despite some flaws, allows Sriram to stake her claim as a filmmaker to watch, with a distinctive voice that mashes up rockabilly aesthetics with Tarot mysticism and an incredible dig at James Franco. This is the kind of thing you want to see at a festival like SXSW: Messy, but wholly original in its genre mashup.

As an actress, Sriram appeared on the likes of “Billions” and “The Blacklist,” shows that are tonally miles apart from “Fucktoys.

Ahead of the film’s world premiere at this year’s SXSW, Annapurna Sriram’s “Fucktoys” has unveiled its trailer exclusively to Variety, teasing a grindhouse adventure through a town named Trashtown, USA. After a woman named AP (Sriram) loses a tooth and is unexpectedly cast with a curse, psychics promise that it can be lifted by a measly $1,000 payment and animal sacrifice. AP immerses herself in the underbelly of Trashtown to earn the money she needs to live another day.

The trailer teases the film’s outrageous tone and 16mm cinematography, as AP looks to psychics for advice and proudly proclaims that “I love trash.” The film’s official synopsis teases that: “In this irreverent and sexy dark comedy, AP collides with a series of larger-than-life characters and absurd situations, each more unhinged than the last, as she winds her way toward the inevitable.

U.K. outfit Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “Bury the Devil,” a one-shot supernatural horror-thriller that recently wrapped production at an isolated location in Canada.

The supernatural-tinged home invasion tale centers on a nurse who discovers her latest patient may be harboring dark secrets. The film was written by John Petrizzi and Brad Hodson, with veteran genre producers Philip Kalin-Hajdu and Benoit Beaulieu (“Turbo Kid”) shepherding the project.

After the film's premiere on Jan. 23, 2025, Twinless debuted with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Twinless received praise for the comedy and performances, which stars O'Brien and James Sweeney, who also wrote and directed the film. However, Variety reports Sundance had to remove Twinless from its streaming site after a major leak online.

Twinless won the festival's Audience Award on Friday, Jan. 31, and ahead of the win, there were several leaks from the streaming site, including sex scenes and other moments from the film.

“Twinless,” a comedic drama starring Dylan O’Brien, has been pulled from Sundance’s streaming site after sex scenes and other content from the film leaked online. The leaks came as “Twinless” won the festival’s coveted Audience Award on Friday.

It’s the second movie to be pulled from Sundance’s site this year. “Selena y Los Dinos,” a documentary about Tejano singer Selena, was also scrubbed from the service after the film “suffered a series of copyright infringements,” meaning it also leaked online. First images for Surface season 2 have revealed new details about Apple TV+'s psychological thriller, including when new episodes get released. Season 1 of the mystery series followed Gugu Mbatha-Raw's Sophie Ellis, a young woman trying to piece together her missing memories after a mysterious injury.

Now, Deadline has released new images from Surface season 2, teasing what's next for the Apple TV+ psychological thriller series. This includes Sophie alongside new images of other characters from the series, including what appears to be James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) sporting a new look, Eliza (Millie Brady), and a new character, Grace (Freida Pinto). Exclusive: Tasha Smith (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), Chris Perfetti (Abbott Elementary), Francois Arnaud (Yellowjackets), Susan Park (Shining Vale) and Cree (Turtles All the Way Down) are the newest additions to the cast of Twinless, the dark comedy that James Sweeney wrote and is directing for Republic Pictures.

Details as to the newcomers’ roles are under wraps. As previously announced, Dylan O’Brien, Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham and Sweeney will also star in the film, which follows two young men who strike up an unlikely bromance after meeting in a twin bereavement support group.

David Permut and Sweeney are producing, with O’Brien and Miky Lee serving exec producing. Three Point Capital is financing the pic with Ali Jazayeri, David Gendron and Liz Destro also serving as executive producers. Alex Astrachan, Director of Development at Permut Presentations, is co-producer. Casting Director is Jessica Munks. Republic Pictures has worldwide rights to the film.

The Decameron is a medieval black comedy series created by Kathleen Jordan. Exclusive: Blue Finch Films has locked the North American sale for horror Mom, starring Schitt’s Creek actress Emily Hampshire.

The film, which premiered at Glasgow FrightFest, has been acquired by Uncork’d Entertainment and will be released later this year. The deal began to take shape at the Cannes market.

The film follows a struggling mother (Hampshire) who is abandoned by her family and partner after a horrific incident. As she falls further into isolation, she begins to be haunted by a sinister entity that is determined to make her relive her darkest moments.

Directed by Adam O’Brien and written by Philip Kalin-Hajdu, the film also stars François Arnaud (Marlowe) and Christian Convery (Cocaine Bear). Producing are Delirium Pictures and Kinetic Film Group.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, cast member Christina Ricci started building the hype for Yellowjackets season 3 by saying it’s going to be more surprising and shocking than what came before… and it’s going to be brutal.

Ricci said, “This season is going to be even more shocking and surprising than the previous seasons. It’s definitely going to be brutal. But they also put a lot of comedy into it. So I think it’s just going to be… extremely Yellowjackets-y.“

Yellowjackets fans will be eating good soon as season 3 will be on its way to your screens with production officially starting. The third year of our favorite schoolgirls was one of the victims of a great delay due to the dual union strikes in Hollywood last year. However, there would be a bonus episode in between the second and third season that would whet viewers’ appetites before the true continuation occurred.

The official Yellowjackets account on social media has just dropped an announcement that filming on season 3 has officially taken off. The announcement is followed by some teaser photos of the camp with one picture showcasing the script for the premiere episode. The post reads, “We know you’re starving… #Yellowjackets Season 3 is officially in production.” Which is then followed by a clapperboard emoji and a bee yellowjacket emoji. Meredith is a struggling mother abandoned by her family and partner after the appalling death of their newborn son. Alone in her house after separating, she becomes more and more isolated, unaware that the death of her baby has caused the birth of something far more sinister. An entity conceived from tragedy that is determined to make her relive over and over again the darkest moments of her existence and keep her family forever torn apart.

Mom is another heavy-handed look at post-partum depression wrapped up in the skin of a genre film – in this case a haunted house film. It’s something we’ve seen plenty of times before, and the filmmakers here don’t really try and stray away from cliche.

Jennifer Ehle has been cast in Jaclyn Bethany’s queer indie drama “In Transit.”

Written by Alex Sarrigeorgiou, the Maine-set feature tells the story of a small town bartender called Lucy who agrees to model for painter Ilse – played by Ehle – who is existentially floundering as she seeks solitude away from her career and complicated personal life while on an artists retreat.

“Through their relationship, both women must confront their preconceptions of what makes a good life,” reads the logline.

Sarrigeorgiou will play Lucy while Francois Arnaud (“Yellowjackets”) is set to play Lucy’s boyfriend Tom, a local chef.

The film goes into production this month with principal photography commencing in Damariscotta, Maine before moving to New York City in February.

While I fully admit to breathing a genuine sigh of relief that Ben's Air Force unit survives the landmine on Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 1 by repeatedly playing a full-body version of the Indiana Jones statue swap, I'm pretty sure that's not how pressure plates work.

Quantum Leap season 2 will bring in interesting new characters and mind-blowing plotlines, refreshing the storytelling and pushing the actors in great new directions. Eliza Taylor's character's arc is one of the standout aspects of the new season, with her stories being some of the director's favorites. The new season will also feature other new cast members, including Peter Gadiot, Melissa Roxburgh, Aaron Abrams, P.J. Byrne, and Francois Arnaud in guest roles, and will premiere on October 4, 2023, at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Quantum Leap executive producer and director Chris Grismer teases interesting new characters and mind-blowing plot lines in the forthcoming season 2. Based on Donald P. Bellisario’s show of the same name, the science fiction television reboot, set thirty years after the original, follows Dr. Ben Song, a physicist who leads a new team to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of Dr. Sam Beckett and the initial experiment.

The Quantum Leap project has been kept well under wraps ... until now.

NBC shared the official trailer for Quantum Leap Season 2 on Monday, and it teases Ben filling in someone about his time-traveling job.

In the new footage, Ben tells Hannah (played by The 100's Eliza Taylor) all about it.

As previously reported, Taylor is one of two new series regulars this season, so we're inclined to believe Ben and Hannah will be spending a lot of time together.

Peter Gadiot is the other new addition as US Army Officer Tom Westfall.

The exciting new footage teases leaps to Egypt in 1961, the Los Angeles Riots in 1992 Koreatown, a UFO investigation in 1949 New Mexico, witch trials in 1692 Massachusetts, and more.

If you watch Quantum Leap online, you know the leaps keep the show fresh because they offer new locations and time periods for the characters.
