House of the Dragon finally redeemed Game of Thrones for its terrible ending and it seems that the fans of the high fantasy series are getting back up on the Got train. Based on George R.R. Martin‘s book Fire & Blood, the Game of Thrones prequel series takes place 200 years before the events of the original series and it revolves around the internal conflicts of the House of Targaryen. House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otta Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole. So, if you loved the high fantasy, political drama, brutal violence, and medieval setting in House of the Dragon here are some similar shows you could watch next.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Hiroyuki Sanada is entering the “Shōgun” episode “The Abyss of Life” as his 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Actor. “The Abyss of Life” aired on April 9, 2024, and is the eighth episode of the FX drama’s first season.
In “The Abyss of Life”: Toranaga (Sanada) and his army travel to Edo to prepare for Nagakado’s (Yuki Kura) funeral and 49 days of mourning. Alvito (Tommy Bastow) suggests to Toranaga that he should ally with Ochiba (Fumi Nikaido) and overthrow Ishido (Takehiro Hira), but Toranaga tells the priest to inform Ishido that he will formally surrender. Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe) and Mariko (Anna Sawai) have a tea ceremony, where he proposes that they commit suicide to protest Toranaga’s surrender, but Mariko refuses. Toranaga’s vassals sign their names to a formal letter of surrender, but Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka) commits “seppuku” in defiance.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Shōgun Episode 10, “A Dream of a Dream.”] Anna Sawai‘s Mariko was the savior of Shōgun in more ways than one. In the pivotal, riveting, and ultimately heartbreaking Shōgun Episode 9, “Crimson Sky,” her actions in Osaka ended up becoming the climactic confrontation of the entire limited series. Mariko was lost in the final moments of “Crimson Sky,” but the Shōgun Episode 10 finale, “A Dream of a Dream,” revealed that Mariko took secret efforts to save her lover, Cosmo Jarvis‘ John Blackthorne. Blackthorne was apprehended by the Portuguese Christians, led by Father Martin Alvito (Tommy Bastow), in Osaka after the ambush that killed Mariko. Separated from Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano), Blackthorne was defenseless as Alvito and a band of soldiers walked him through the woods beyond Osaka castle. Blackthorne had just awoken from a days-long sleep triggered by the blast that killed Mariko; he missed her burial because of it. The ...

This article contains spoilers for Shogun episode 10.
The characters of FX’s Shōgun know all about endings. After John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) experiences the first of many Japanese earthquakes in the miniseries’ fourth episode, his translator/lover Mariko (Anna Sawai) explains how her people have come to adapt to the environmental instability.
“It is why our houses are built to go up as quickly as they come down,” she says. “Because death is in our air. And sea and earth. It can come for us at any moment. Before you meddle with our politics, just remember … we live and we die. We control nothing beyond that.”
While Mariko-sama is right that a person can control nothing beyond living and dying, it turns out that one individual living or dying is enough to change everything. Mariko helped establish the future with her sacrifice in Shōgun‘s penultimate episode. Now it’s...

Discouraged by Toranaga’s resignation to his fate, Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka) speaks out against his decision to surrender, with the support of other leaders in Torganaga’s army. But as usual, things aren’t always what they seem with Torganaga, and he may still have a few tricks left up his sleeve.

This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Shogun.
Midway through its second episode, FX/Hulu miniseries Shōgun features a moment that could be rife with misunderstanding.
Pilot major John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) has unceremoniously washed ashore in Japan, becoming the first Englishman to do so. No one in Osaka speaks English, having just learned of England’s existence moments ago, so to communicate with this “barbarian,” powerful regent Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) summons the closest thing to a Brit he can find to translate: a Portuguese Catholic priest named Father Martin Alvito (Tommy Bastow).
Since the Portuguese had previously established trade routes with feudal Japan, much of the Catholic clergy there can speak both Portuguese and Japanese. That’s how the scene unfolds then with Blackthorne speaking in his non-native Portuguese to Father Martin who then translates it in his non-native Japanese to Lord Toranaga who...

The latest in this pulpy fighting franchise has Chechen refugee Anya punching the patriarchy, refreshingly unencumbered by a love interest
Here is a brutally violent but oddly empowering tale of trafficked women compelled to kick the hell out of each other or else get sent to an Albanian brothel. It is part of a pulpy, under-the-radar film franchise series that revolves around illegal, or semi-legal, fight clubs and mixed martial arts (Mma) bouts that usually pit men against their friends and fellow athletes. Cannes – Germany’s Zdf Enterprises and Japan’s Fuji TV have picked their team for soccer drama “The Window.”
Mel Raido (“Deep State”), Tommy Bastow (“Agatha Raisin”), stage actor Samuel Jordan, Lynn Van Royen (“Tabula Rasa”), Jodie Tyack (“The Feed”), and Carole Weyers (“Grey’s Anatomy”) will all star in the show. It heads into production in the U.K. next week, before moving to Belgium and Malta.
Co-production is commonplace in the international drama market, but not among European and Asian partners. Having pacted, Zdf Enterprises, the commercial arm of German pubcaster Zdf, and Japanese broadcaster Fuji will share international sales duties.
The pair first worked up the idea of teaming on drama at Mipcom three years ago. They unveiled the cast and full team on the show at the 2019 edition of the TV market. Berlin-based production company Boogie Entertainment developed “The Window,” and will make it with Belgium-based Velvet Films.

ABC is not moving forward with a second season of drama series The Crossing.
The Crossing premiered April 2 with American Idol as a lead-in, but that episode of the revived singing-competition series happened to match a series-low demo rating for a regular telecast. Post-Idol, the midseason drama managed to eke out a win in the 10 Pm hour with a 1.0 and 5.45 million viewers. It outperformed same night last year for ABC by double digits but fell short of previous week’s The Good Doctor wrapper and its season average, though that still left it ABC’s second-most-watched Monday 10 Pm debut, behind Doctor, in nearly three years.
The series stared Steve Zahn as the sheriff of a small fishing town in Oregon who must deal with dozens of refugees from a war-torn country who arrive on its beach. One twist: The country they’re from is America — and the war they’re...

ABC has picked up four new series from its sister ABC Studios, including a new drama from Shonda Rhimes’ company, a drama about saving the world (starring Jason Ritter), a series about refugees… from America, and comedy that sounds like it might take a few cues from the recently installed White House inhabitant.
