Welcome to Wrexham, the docuseries from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, is returning for season four at FX.

The news was announced by McElhenney and Reynolds at Disney’s Upfronts.

Season three launched earlier this month and follows the team as they scored back-to-back promotions. Season four will follow the team in League One.

The docuseries follows Reynolds and McElhenny as they navigate running the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. When the two bought the Red Dragons together in 2020, the team had spent 15 seasons in the National League, the lowest of England’s five professional football divisions. (Credit: Getty Images) “Anyone who’s been following the Wrexham story will have seen that we got promoted,” says Humphrey Ker, the McElhenney-Reynolds pal who serves as the club’s executive director. (The comic actor also occasionally appears as Tall Paul opposite McElhenney on Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest.) “I think a big theme that will be stressed will be the challenge we faced in terms of expectations.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor and showrunner Rob McElhenney decided to purchase a Welsh association football well beyond its heyday. Having not qualified for the English Football League (Efl) for quite some time, Wrexham A.F.C. was in an ideal position to be bought for a relatively reasonable amount and made the focus of a rags-to-riches story. That story would be told over 18 episodes of a docuseries for Hulu called Welcome to Wrexham, putting a small Welsh town on the map and controlling the narrative of McElhenney's crazy business endeavor. In order to do so, however, McElhenney needed to form his own team; firstly Rob's football-savvy British friend Humphrey Ker (writer on McElhenney's Mythic Quest and husband to The Always Sunny Podcast's Megan Ganz). Then, in order to afford such a major payment, McElhenney needed a business partner of a high caliber and business ambition.

“American Auto” creator Justin Spitzer shared what fans of the workplace comedy would have seen in Season 3 had NBC renewed the series.

“Season 3 of ‘American Auto’ was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm,” Spitzer wrote on Twitter Friday shortly after news circulated that the series would not be returning for a third installment.

Spitzer posted today on Twitter that the third season “was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm. I’m so sorry we didn’t get to make those episodes, but I’m immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there.”

NBC opted not to proceed with a third season of its workplace comedy series American Auto, created and executive produced by Superstore creator Spitzer. His other workplace comedy, St. Denis Medical, has been picked up to series by the network.

NBC recently axed the sitcom American Auto after two seasons, confirming that no third season is in development. “American Auto” has been canceled by NBC, TheWrap can confirm. This marks the third comedy to be canceled by the network after “Young Rock” and “Grand Crew,” which were axed earlier this month.

Created by Justin Spitzer, the series starred Ana Gasteyer and Harriet Dyer as the employees of a Detroit-based carmaking company. The series followed the struggles of Payne Motors after a CEO (Gasteyer) from the pharmaceutical world who knows next-to-nothing about cars is hired to run a car manufacturer. The series also starred Jon Barinholtz, Tye White, Michael Benjamin Washington, Humphrey Ker and X Mayo. Jim O’Heir, Andy Daly, Martha Kelly, Seth Meyers and Ryan Reynolds also appeared in the series as guest stars.

“American Auto” first premiered in December of 2021 to critical acclaim. Season 1 still has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews.

NBC has canceled its second-year comedy American Auto.

The series, set at a struggling car company, wrapped its second season in April. It was the last scripted show on NBC’s 2022-23 schedule still in limbo; American Auto’s cancellation follows those of Young Rock and Grand Crew a week ago.

NBC has also opted not to go ahead with its lone remaining comedy pilot, Non-Evil Twin, from Amber Ruffin (who also stars) and former Black-ish showrunner Kenny Smith.

NBC is shutting down production on American Auto, cancelling the satirical workplace comedy after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

Season to date, American Auto has averaged 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), down 15 and 40 percent from its freshman numbers (2.7 mil/0.5). Out of the five sitcoms that NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 3 in audience and ties for third in the demo (besting only Grand Crew, which was also recently cancelled, along with Young Rock).

Exclusive: NBC has opted not to proceed with a third season of its workplace comedy series American Auto, created and executive produced by Superstore creator Justin Spitzer.

The news comes a week after the network picked up to series Spitzer’s workplace comedy pilot St. Denis Medical.

NBC is going through a comedy lineup revamp this year, cancelling all of its returning series. The network’s 2023-34 schedule will include freshmen Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez, both of which were renewed for a second season, as well as new entry St. Denis Medical.

There could’ve been a Justin Spitzer single-camera workplace comedy block next season with St. Denis Medical and American Auto, and the latter had internal support at NBC but ultimately the network decided not to go through with a Season 3.

NBC has canceled “Grand Crew” after two seasons and “Young Rock” after three seasons.

“Grand Crew,” which comes from Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), followed friends Noah, Nicky, Sherm, Anthony, Wyatt and Fay as they navigated the ups and downs of life and unpacked it all at their favorite wine bar.

The cast includes Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Aaron Jennings, Justin Cunningham, Carl Tart and Grasie Mercedes. The hangout comedy is produced by Universal Television, with Jackson and Goor serving as executive producers.

NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.

American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.

Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.

Fans of Justin Spitzer-created sitcoms are once again in for a treat on this week's all-new installment of American Auto. After Ben Feldman appeared earlier in the season, there was no telling which Superstore alumni could pop up next. Season 2, Episode 12 provides an answer to this question, however, and showcases another familiar face. "Dealer Event" airs Tuesday, April 11th on NBC and features Kaliko Kauahi as Tammy the Animal Wrangler.

Kauahi, who previously played Cloud 9 employee Sandra, has worked on several projects in the genre. Although the future of the show remains unknown, Kauahi was recently cast in the pilot of Spitzer's latest workplace comedy, St. Denis Medical. Meanwhile, the main cast of American Auto includes Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, Jon Barinholtz, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White, and X Mayo.

The docuseries tracks the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling football club, the Red Dragons.

“Welcome to Wrexham” is maybe the closest that a sports documentary has come to a chicken and egg question. Does the FX series exist because Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took a flyer on buying Wrexham Fc, a downtrodden Welsh soccer squad? Or was the possibility of “Welcome to Wrexham” a main reason for the purchase in the first place?

The fact that both answers seem plausible is never all that far from the show itself. McElhenney and Reynolds talk in early interviews about their elaborate pandemic purchase, a gambit made between social media buddies whose first in-person meeting is captured by these documentary cameras. They’re the marquee attraction in the charming opening episode, which gets as close to off-the-cuff and unguarded as press-savvy comedy stars get.

Before long, though, the pair have to embrace the fact that they’re mixing an entrepreneurial endeavor with some real-life human emotion hanging in the balance.

Specifically, the one from Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle of Ryan Reynolds in surgical scrubs, asking: “But why?” Why did Reynolds and fellow movie/TV star Rob McElhenney decide to buy a fifth-tier (official designation, not my personal judgment) football team in Wales together? Comedian Humphrey Ker has shared Ryan Reynolds‘ reponse to being called a “c***” at the first Wrexham match he attended.

The Hollywood actor, 45, recently bought the football club with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney, and, in February 2022, took full control of the club.

The story of their £2m investment will be told in documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which will be released on Disney Plus.

The pair have attended several matches, but according to comedian Ker, who they appointed Executive Director, fans have not always been nice.

In a new Reynolds and McElhenney interview with The Times, Ker revealed that he “had to explain” to the duo “that no matter how successful the team is, someone will come up to them and call them a c**”.

Ker added: “The first game they attended at Maidenhead they received abuse, and I think they actually enjoyed it.”
