MGM+ on Wednesday announced it has ordered a 10-episode first season of “The Winter King,” based on the popular “Warlord Chronicles” novels by Bernard Cornwell that explore a deconstructive, somewhat realistic take on the legends of King Arthur.
The series will star Iain De Caestecker as Arthur Pendragon.
The series is set to premiere August 20 on MGM+, the network formerly known as Epix. It is produced by Sony Pictures-owned production company Bad Wolf, and is being adapted by Kate Brooke and Ed Whitmore. Otto Bathurst, known for his work on Netflix’s “Peaky Blinders” and HBO’s “His Dark Materials,” will serve as lead director and executive producer alongside Toby Leslie.

(Welcome to The Weekly Watchlist, a feature where we program everything you need to stream this week. In this edition: "History of the World, Part II" takes center stage, but we also offer up some silly comedies and less-silly historical epics to stream.)
The Series: "History of the World, Part II"

The Pitch: Over four decades after the original sketch comedy movie "History of the World, Part I," legendary funnyman Mel Brooks is back to pay off on the tongue-in-cheek promise of that dangling subtitle. Everyone has their favorite Disney movie, and for Wednesday actor Joy Sunday, it’s The Sword in the Stone. The 1963 animated classic tells the story of King Arthur as a boy and his beginnings as one of history’s greatest heroes. But in the Tim Burton–directed Netflix series Wednesday, Sunday’s Bianca Barclay has a heroic tale all her own.

Right before his “Pinocchio” stop-motion film (probably) wins the Animated Feature Oscar this March, Guillermo Del Toro is setting up a new animated flick at Netflix. The “Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” filmmaker will direct “The Buried Giant,” an animated adaptation of “Never Let Me Go” writer Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel, for the streamer, IndieWire has confirmed.
Released in 2015, Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant” is set in a version of England where King Arthur really existed but has long since died, and nobody is able to retain long-term memories. The story focuses on the relationship between Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple who go on a journey to find a son they can barely remember.
Del Toro will direct and produce the film adaptation, and is co-writing the script with Dennis Kelly, who previously penned the screenplay to Netflix’s “Matilda the Musical” last year. ShadowMachine, the stop-motion studio behind “Pinocchio,...

Sam Heughan has been playing Jamie Frasier on Outlander for a decade now. While he was a relatively unknown actor before landing the part, the show without a doubt made him a household name. Outlander was recently renewed for an eighth and final season and Heughan already has ideas about which role he would like next. The Outlander star is desperate to appear in a different fantasy series.
Sam Heughan and his family are huge fantasy fans
Heughan was born in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland in 1980. His parents were part of a hippie community that heavily borrowed from the works of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings writer J. R. R. Tolkien. Their love for all things Tolkien inspired them to name their children after Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings characters.

If you’re eagerly awaiting the release of Seven Kings Must Die – the final feature-length instalment of The Last Kingdom, airing on Netflix this April – you might be wondering what will fill the epic battle-filled hole in your TV viewing schedule once it’s all over.
Good news: the answer could be Bad Wolf’s new show The Winter King, which will air on Itvx. This brand-new historical fiction TV series has more than just the Middle Ages setting in common with The Last Kingdom: they’re also both based on a series of Bernard Cornwell novels. This time, however, instead of Saxons vs. Vikings, The Winter King will tell the story of the legend of King Arthur:
“Once upon a time, in a land that was called Britain, these things happened.”

Endings in franchise films might not be definitive, especially in a climate of inevitable reboots/sequels, but they surely cement the tone of the narrative weaved thus far. Sometimes, a director's idea of how a film should end clashes with studio expectations, prompting the release of a theatrical cut that heavily diverges from what was originally intended. This is exactly what happened in the case of Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness," whose original ending was scrapped by Universal after it was deemed too pessimistic by test-screening audiences. In the event of the film's 30th anniversary this week, I want to talk about the sheer brilliance of this original alternate ending, and why its tongue-in-cheek pessimism works infinitely better for "Army of Darkness" as a whole.

“I know I come across as quite confident,” says newswoman Philomena Cunk, “but sometimes when I’m talking to experts, I worry that, you know, I might come across as quite stupid.”
This is easily the most self-aware moment for Cunk throughout the five-episode British mockumentary series Cunk on Earth, which began streaming on Netflix this week. As played by Diane Morgan, Cunk is a naive simpleton who can barely grasp any of the subjects she discusses, filtering everything through an extremely narrow and modern lens. As she attempts to...

Kang the Conqueror is one of the most formidable figures in Marvel Comics' stable of supervillains. He's also one of the most complicated to explain, but I'll try my best to untangle his history (and future) here: He was once an academic named Nathaniel Richards, who hailed from the distant future. With a deep obsession with the past, Richards' studies led to him stumbling on Doctor Doom's time machine, which he uses to explore various periods in history, each time resulting in a different version of himself. Among those versions are the Pharaoh Rama-Tut and the Scarlet Centurion, as well as his most famous form, Kang.
The character has been around since the 1960s, has taken on the Fantastic Four and the Avengers on countless occasions across space and time, and continues to make life difficult for our heroes. His passion for time has set him on an eternal...

This article contains major spoilers for "Terrifier 2."
If "Terrifier 2" has taught me anything, it's that I would rather face a number of deadly obstacles than ever run into Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton). At least there's the possibility of survival with slasher villains like Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, whereas Art will stop at nothing to obliterate you once he's locked onto your presence. Throughout the film's nearly two and a half-hour runtime, which is unheard of for a slasher flick, we get to see Art dismember folks by means of some jaw-dropping practical gore effects. That's practically what sold the film beyond the traditional horror crowd, who largely knew what they were in for.
Whether it be the harrowing bedroom kill or ferocious final girl Sienna (Lauren Lavera) doing what needs to be done, "Terrifier 2" is built upon one memorably gory sequence after the other.

Wales has long been regarded as a place of myth and magic – its national emblem is the dragon, after all, and it has strong links with the legend of King Arthur. So, it is fitting that Lucasfilm should have chosen it as the location for the Disney+ fantasy series “Willow.” The production was based at Dragon Studios in Bridgend, South Wales, and filmed at 32 locations across the country.
The Celtic nation has provided the locations for many iconic movie scenes over the decades, including the Bat Cave in “The Dark Knight Rises,” The Slaughtered Lamb pub in “American Werewolf in London,” and the castle in the opening scene of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
Wales also hosted part of the shoot for Ron Howard’s original 1988 “Willow” movie, based on a story by George Lucas, and starring Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley and Warwick Davis. The latter two actors reprise...

Shooting starts again March 2023 to complete Marvel Studios’ new live-action TV series "Agatha: Coven of Chaos” based on the Marvel Comics character, spinning off from "WandaVision", starring Kathryn Hahn as a human ‘witch’ and Aubrey Plaza as 'Morgan le Fay', streaming in 2023 on Disney +:
‘
"...debuting in Marvel Comics "Fantastic Four" #94 (1970), 'Agatha Harkness', a human 'witch' from Salem, Massachusetts, was accused of practicing dark magic by her own coven during the Salem witch trials.
"Over three hundred years later she sensed the presence of chaos magic radiating from the 'Westview Anomaly' created by 'Wanda Maximoff'.
"Harkness became obsessed with harnessing Maximoff's magic, stealing the house of 'Ralph Bohner' and undertook the guise of Agnes, Maximoff's 'nosy neighbor', while interfering with Maximoff's idyllic paradise for her own benefit.
"After discovering that Maximoff was 'Scarlet Witch', Harkness was defeated and stripped of her magical abilities, indefinitely condemned to live out her life in 'Westview'.

Antoine Fuqua was just a child when he was shot on the streets of Pittsburgh. But the memory is spectacularly vivid. “I was 15,” says the 56-year-old director of the Oscar-winning Training Day. “I remember running through an alleyway and I remember it raining and I remember hearing a voice say ‘run’. I don’t know where it came from. But I remember every detail of those moments. Every detail.”
Hearing Fuqua describe what happened is like watching a sequence from one of his own neo-noir movies. “The bullets hitting the telephone poles. The splintering. The sound,” he says. “The rain on the guy that was shooting. The glasses he wore. The water hitting his glasses. The rifle in his hand.” Each freeze frame comes with a gesture: Fuqua’s hands splayed wide for the bullets, his knuckles gliding past his eyes for the rain, his finger pulling an imaginary trigger.

It’s Labor vs. Capital, in basic terms! Sean Connery is the tough, embittered miner looking to strike back against the bosses, and Richard Harris the underdog who sees a way out by becoming an agent provocateur for the Pinkertons. An admirable true-life history lesson, Walter Bernstein & Martin Ritt’s downer of a drama didn’t grab the public’s imagination. But there’s no better vision of the time and place, thanks to James Wong Howe’s realistic, nearly monochromatic cinematography.

The writing of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" was largely handled in teams. John Cleese and Graham Chapman would write sketches together, and their output tended to be more linguistic and cerebral; Cleese and Chapman were responsible for the Cheese Shop sketch, for instance, or the Argument Clinic. Michael Palin and Terry Jones were a team, and their sketches tilted toward whimsical absurdity; the pair wrote the Spam sketch and the Dead Parrot sketch. Eric Idle wrote sketches on his own, and his tended to be cheeky, as when he wrote the "Wink wink, nudge nudge" sketch. He also wrote the show's songs. Terry Gilliam lived off to the side working on the "Flying Circus" animations.
As stated in any number of retrospectives, the team would then unite to pitch and/or read sketches. Together, they would hone the jokes, make them as funny as possible, and agree as to who would play which parts.

We are eight months out from this year’s Academy Awards, where Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after a derogatory joke aimed at his wife Jada Pinkett. He was subsequently barred from attending the ceremony for the next decade. And, now, the actor’s career lies in jeopardy. Several of his projects have stalled. Others, reportedly, have been outright cancelled. His historical action film Emancipation, which had finished production just a few weeks before that fateful Oscar night, cost Apple an estimated 120m, and though the studio has pressed ahead with its scheduled release plan, the debate is still rife over whether they’ve made the right call. Smith himself gets it. “I completely understand,” he told a US journalist in an interview this week. “If someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready.” I also respect people’s...

Peter Jackson's 1992 film "Braindead," released in North America as "Dead Alive," while certainly an object of intimidation for gore-averse cineastes, remains, at its heart, a comedy film. Jackson has spoken in the past about how "Dead Alive" was not inspired so much by raw, hard-edged gore films like "Cannibal Holocaust," and more by the whimsical violence of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." A notable scene in the 1974 comedy classic features a bridge sentry, the Black Knight (John Cleese), getting into a swordfight with King Arthur (Graham Chapman). Over the course of the fight, his extremities are sliced off one by one, only to return to battle unfazed. While blood spurts copiously from each severed limb, the Black Knight doesn't seem to feel any pain.
When he is reduced to a mere head and torso, only then will he admit that his swordfight will now have to be declared a draw.

Writer/director David Lowery’s fantasy adventure film The Green Knight (watch it Here) is getting a special collector’s edition Blu-ray release on November 25th, and the folks at Collider have discovered that this Blu-ray is going to feature a new short film that was directed by Lowery! Sporting a running time of 20 minutes, the short film The Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love isn’t directly related to The Green Knight, but is connected to it due to the fact that it’s “based on another piece of Arthurian lore”.
Lowery told Collider, “I’d already been thinking about adapting this particular story, and as we were coming up with ways to make the Blu-ray extra special, I thought it would be nice to have an adjunct movie on the disc. I love physical media, and loved the idea of having this short film that would never be released online,...

The School for Good and Evil, Paul Feig’s fantasy adventure film based on Soman Chainani’s YA book series, explores the gray areas in fairy tale morality through a pair of girls who are whisked away to the titular Schools for Good and Evil (Sge for short). Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso), who has always considered herself something of an unappreciated Cinderella within the town of Gavaldon, longs to be the kind of princess she’s only read about in fairy tales. Agatha (Sofia Wylie), regarded as the town witch, only wants Sophie to be happy.
When Sophie writes to the Sge begging for enrollment, she and Agatha are transported there… but then Sophie gets dropped into the School for Evil, while Agatha wakes up at the School for Good. With the School Master Rhian (Laurence Fishburne) staunchly claiming that there are no mistakes at his school, each girl must...

Back in 2017, the notion of a straight-to-streaming blockbuster seemed faintly ludicrous. When Netflix released Bright – the ruthlessly panned 100m “orc cop” film starring Will Smith – it felt like the mad folly of a company drunk on its own success. Five years, one pandemic and three prime ministers later, the prospect of Netflix releasing a film on that scale sounds like just another Friday.
The latest expensive release to grace the streamer’s catalogue is The School for Good and Evil. Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids; 2016’s Ghostbusters), the film follows two teen girls who become enrolled in a magic school split into two conflicting factions (good and not-so-good). The whole thing is a sort of hodge-podge of different fantasy and fairytale tropes – Harry Potter by way of Shrek. Public domain IP is greedily plundered for characters: the school lumps characters like King Arthur’s progeny in with Prince Charming’s...

Despite the egregious snubbing of David Lowery's "The Green Knight" during last year's Academy Awards ceremony, real ones know that the film was one of the very best of 2021. The epic medieval fantasy film from A24 based on the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," saw Dev Patel as King Arthur's nephew Gawain, who sets out on the ultimate journey to test his bravery and come face-to-face with the titular Green Knight.
The film is about to receive a special Blu-ray collector's edition (not to be confused with the 2021 Blu-ray release) next month, and according to our friends over at Collider, one of the included special features will be a 20-minute companion short film from Lowery called "The Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love." The short film will loosely connect to "The Green Knight," focusing on two characters that share knowledge in "unconventional ways."

Review: Netflix tends to market the hell out of its feature film projects. “Harry Potter” has had many imitators, but none so blatant or irredeemably over-the-top as Netflix franchise starter “The School for Good and Evil,” an extravagant YA costume show from “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig that follows two friends to an elite academy where the heroes and villains of future fairy tales are trained. The whole idea derives from a book series by Soman Chainani, though it’s obvious where it really comes from: the imagination of J.K. Rowling, who must be positively livid watching what looks like the most expensive episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” ever produced.
Feig goes full camp here, casting Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron to play the decked-out divas who oversee the enchanted institution’s two sides. The former embodies Professor Dovey, a prissy headmistress in Tweety Bird-yellow threads, who’s always going on about the rules, while Theron’s evil-minded Lady Lesso takes her fashion cues from Ilsa,...

Shaking off the dust of years in studio development hell, Soman Chainani’s series-spawning YA novel, The School for Good and Evil, lumbers its way to the screen trailing not only the baggage of Harry Potter and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, but that of too many knockoffs to list. Given his inexperience with fairy tale fantasy, it’s no surprise that Paul Feig exhibits zero feel for the genre’s world-building. Still, this is a uniquely tiresome slog — madly over-plotted, thuddingly derivative, insanely overlong and slathered in a big symphonic score that strives to infuse momentum into a saga with minimal emotional stakes.
Acquired and put into production by Netflix after it stalled at Universal, it’s a lavishly appointed feature, albeit in a cloying, candy-colored way, and maybe young teens and tweens who fancy themselves as princesses or witches might find something to enjoy.

You might think that the late actor Richard Harris was an Englishman. He certainly had the accent and his roles ranged from King Arthur to Dumbledore. He also studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and his sons Damian, Jared, and Jamie were all born in London. Despite all this, Harris wasn't British — he was Irish, born and raised in the city of Limerick.
One of Harris' earliest film roles was as an Ira soldier in the 1960 Robert Mitchum vehicle, "A Terrible Beauty." In 2020, The Irish Times posthumously listed Harris as the third greatest Irish actor of all time, behind only Daniel Day-Lewis (an England/Ireland dual citizen) and Maureen O'Hara.
Harris used his faux-Britishness when he starred in "Unforgiven" as arrogant, jingoistic gunslinger English Bob. Despite his moniker "The Duke of Death," Bob turns out to be a total fraud — it's even hinted that he's not actually English.

Long before his involvement in a series of elf-populated, jewelry-based hiking movies, New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson won hearts as the director of gloppy, vomitous, utterly repellant midnight grindhouse fare like "Bad Taste," "Meet the Feebles," and "Braindead" (known as "Dead Alive" in North America). Jackson's early films have an excited, adolescent joie de vivre that his later digital-forward technical exercises lack, and are perfect for naughty teenagers who think that films like "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn" don't go far enough.
"Dead Alive," easily one of the goriest films ever made, is constructed like a comedy film and has a premise that wouldn't feel out of place in a Saturday morning cartoon. Lionel (Timothy Balme) lives with his controlling and guilt-trip-dispensing mother Vera (Elizabeth Moody) in 1950s Wellington. Lionel is beloved by a local shop owner named Paquita (Diana Peñalver) who believes, courtesy of tarot cards, that they...

There is only one week to go before Netflix releases the new film "The School for Good and Evil." To celebrate the streaming adaptation of the best-selling series of the same name by Soman Chainani, we have a brand new trailer that gives a deeper look at what's coming. Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) wants to be a princess, and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) has all the makings of a witch.
These two friends get kidnapped and sent to the School for Good and Evil, but on the opposite side of where they wanted to go. Agatha ends up on the Princess side of things, sent to the "groom room" for pretty frocks and lovely flowers. Sophie is trying to use her blond hair as...

Arryk and Erryk Cargyll are identical twins from a small house in the crownlands outside of King’s Landing. In George R.R. So identical, even their fellow Kingsguard couldn’t tell them apart, Arryk and Erryk seemed to have a loving relationship and were largely inseparable before civil war broke out. Both brothers saw a lot of the inner workings of the...

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is halfway through season 1, so I'm going to take a moment to praise the incredible costumes of characters like Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and Disa (Sophia Nomvete and the Mvp of the series).
I'm not alone in this admiration. Tweets and other posts on social media have compared some of the costumes to paintings from the Pre-Raphaelite, Orientalist, and Symbolist movements in art history. Twitter user @LeoPrasidis compared Galadriel's golden leaf crown to the one in Léon François Comerre's "The Girl with the Golden Wreath," Míriel's hair net to Herbert Gustave Schmalz's "Zenobia's Last Look Upon Palmyra," and Galadriel's armor to Joan of Arc paintings from John Everett Millais, and Charles-Amable Lenoir.

Though it sets out on a ghost hunt, Adrian Sibley’s fitfully fascinating documentary works better as an exploration of its subject’s public and private personas, charting Richard Harris’ rise from local sports star to screen legend via an unexpected heyday as a chart-topping pop star in 1968.
Rather than start with a séance, however, The Ghost of Richard Harris, screening in the Classics section of the Venice Film Festival, opens with the more prosaic sight of the actor’s three sons — Damien, Jared and Jamie — going through their late mother’s lock-up, where they find journals full of poetry, King Arthur’s crown (a prop from 1967’s Camelot) and trinkets from the Harry Potter franchise, in which their father played Dumbledore until his death in 2002, aged 72.
This set-up proves to be somewhat self-defeating, as the three middle-aged men, while reminiscing, then admit that they were packed away to boarding...

When the seminal British TV program "Monty Python's Flying Circus" was still on the air (1969 - 1974), it wasn't yet reaching a massive international audience. To facilitate the show's spread, a feature film consisting of re-staged sketches from the show's first two seasons -- called "And Now for Something Completely Different" -- was released in England in 1971. That film is certainly funny, although it lacks the comedic magic of the TV show.
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was put into production after "Flying Circus" went off the air. The special features for the film's 2001 DVD release featured vintage footage of late cast member Graham Chapman explaining that the troupe had been working on a script -- pointedly absurd, natch -- that was set partially in the Middle Ages and partially in the present day. After some discussion, the Pythons came up with the King Arthur/Holy Grail angle, knowing that...

The television adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s series “Warlord Chronicles” will debut in the U.K. on ITV’s new streaming platform Itvx.
It will then air later on linear.
U.S. and international sales haven’t yet been announced. U.S. cabler Epix was at one point adapting “Warlord Chronicles” but is believed to be no longer involved.
As Variety exclusively revealed in April, “His Dark Materials” producer Bad Wolf has snapped up the rights to the “Warlord Chronicles” trilogy and is set to adapt the first book, “The Winter King,” into a 10-part series.
“The Warlord Chronicles” are loosely based on the legend of King Arthur. Set in 5th century Britain – then still a landscape of warring nations – it takes place in an era when life was brutal and fleeting. In this setting, a young Arthur Pendragon goes on a journey to become a warrior, which takes him...

Aaron Latham, a screenwriter, journalist and author whose story in Texas Monthly inspired the 1980 smash “Urban Cowboy,” died July 23 in Pennsylvania of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 78.
Latham was married to “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl. He died at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Stahl and the couple’s daughter, Taylor Stahl Latham, a producer on the Apple TV+ drama “Servant,” were with him as he died.
“He loved being two things: He loved being a writer and he loved being a father,” Stahl told Variety, noting that he got a good start as a writer at The Washington Post and moved on from there to even bigger accomplishments.
A native of Texas, Latham was known for writing about novels set in the Old West. His magazine journalism also inspired the 1985 movie “Perfect” about the aerobics exercise craze of that moment. The film reunited Latham with...

The Lincoln Center Theater production of Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot with a new book by Aaron Sorkin will arrive on Broadway next spring rather than this fall, producers announced today.
Camelot, which will reteam Sorkin (who is writing the book based on the original Alan Jay Lerner book) with his To Kill A Mockingbird director Bartlett Sher, will now begin previews at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on Thursday, March 9, 2023, with an official opening on Thursday, April 13, 2023.
The production previously had been set to begin performances this November. No reason was given for the rescheduling.
Based on The Once and Future King by T.H. White, Camelot, Lerner and Loewe’s 1960 follow up to their My Fair Lady, is, as described by the production, “a story about the quest for democracy, striving for justice, and the tragic struggle between passion and aspiration, between lovers and kingdoms.”
This musical features such characters as King Arthur,...

This post contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness now available to stream on Disney+, fans can slow things down and look closely at the many easter eggs hidden in the movie. Unsurprisingly, the cameo-laden Illuminati scene gets the most attention, in which Professor Xavier of the X-Men and the Black Bolt of Inhumans return to screen. Even more surprising was the appearance of “the world’s smartest man” Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, of the Fantastic Four, played not by previous actors Ioan Gruffudd or Miles Teller, but by John Krasinski of The Office fame.
With more time to examine the scene, some internet users noticed a larger universe easter egg in the way that Richards arrived. Unlike most of the other Illuminati members, Richards is not seated when Baron Modo brings Strange into their chamber. Rather, Richards...
