Lore is not a typical Holocaust movie. It’s not even a typical war movie, although both subjects are of paramount importance to its story.
It boldly portrays its protagonists, staunch supporters of Hitler and his Third Reich as sympathetic human beings. It is a mind-opening experience to realize that his devotees were also victims, albeit in a completely different way than the Jews and others who perished in his systematic murder.
They were deceived, humiliated, and preyed upon each other like animals, nothing resembling the superior race of humans he proclaimed they were.
Lore centers on fifteen-year old Hannelore (excellently portrayed by Saskia Rosendahl) who is for all intents and purposes orphaned in the days after the Allies’ victory. She must lead her younger sister, twin brothers and infant brother across the no-man’s land that Germany has become.

Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother’s house we go. Except this ain’t no fairy tale... unless it is, perhaps, a hint of the beginnings of a new mythology of darkness and light, of scary childhood and even scarier adolescence giving way to a resigned, grieving adulthood. Lore (newcomer Saskia Rosendahl, who reminds me a young Connie Nielsen), perhaps 14 or 15 years old, is abandoned with her four younger siblings, one still a babe in arms, by their parents; yes, in the deep dark woods. It’s for the children’s safety, since Mom (Ursina Lardi) and Dad (Hans-Jochen Wagner) -- he’s a Nazi officer; it’s hinted that she may be some sort of Mengele-esque doctor or scientist -- must turn themselves in to the occupying American forces, now that the Fuhrer is dead. Mom says she’s coming back, but Lore knows better, and...

★★★★☆ Opening with the fall of Nazi Germany in 1945, Cate Shortland's brave and expertly handled second feature, Lore (2012), traverses difficult territory with grace and eloquence. As the Allies march on Berlin, Lore (Saskia Rosendahal), a blue-eyed, blond-haired prodigy of the Hitler Youth, is left with the task of getting herself and the surviving members of her family to her grandmother's house in Hamburg in the wake of her SS parents' arrest for their involvement in the death camps. Whilst navigating through the Black Forest, avoiding Russian and American troops, Lore encounters a young Jewish survivor, Thomas ( Kai-Peter Malina).

Chicago – “Lore,” opening this weekend at the Landmark Century and Landmark Renaissance theaters here in Chicago and now playing in New York and Los Angeles, is a very unique coming-of-age film. It features a star-making performance from its lead, a girl who learns the truth about not just the brutality of life but the dark secrets of her family and country. The film sometimes crosses the line into melodrama when a more subtle approach would have served it better and the end comes too abruptly but enough cannot be said about its leading lady, a truly captivating actress at a very young age who should be an international star. Director Cate Shortland’s “Somersault” introduced the world to the great Abbie Cornish. The introduction here feels just as vital to the form.

"What have we done?" Today's trailer is for a film I've been hearing a lot of great buzz about as one of the best indie surprises of 2012, an Australian-German film called Lore, directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland. It's actually a film in German, set in Germany at the end of WWII, about a young girl named Lore, played by Saskia Rosendahl, and her siblings. Together they set out on a harrowing journey across a devastated country to reach their grandmother in the north. It's received tremendous buzz and outstanding ratings, thankfully the trailer lives up to expectations in a beautiful way. Give this a look, it's worth a watch. Watch the official Us trailer for Cate Shortland's Lore, originally in high def from Apple: As the Allies sweep across Germany, Lore leads her siblings on a journey that exposes them to the truth of their parents' beliefs. The year is 1945. Left to fend for herself when her SS officer father and mother, a staunch Nazi believer, are interred by the victorious Allies at the end of World War II, Lore, a fourteen-year-old German girl (striking newcomer Saskia Rosendahl), must lead her four siblings on a harrowing journey across a devastated country. When she meets the charismatic and mysterious young refugee Thomas, (Kai-Peter Malina) Lore soon finds her world shattered by feelings of hatred and desire as she must put her trust in the very person she was always taught to hate in order to survive. We have an exclusive clip from this harrowing drama as it makes its way into theaters this weekend. Watch as Lore explains to the lonely old man under the bridge what became of her Nazi parents in this taut historic tale filled with drama and suspense.

Cate Shortland established herself as a serious filmmaker with her impressive feature debut, Somersault, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004. Her second film, the visually stunning Lore, which opens February 8th, follows the harrowing journey of a fourteen-year-old German girl (Saskia Rosendahl) who leads her four siblings across a war-torn Germany after her Nazi parents are imprisoned by the victorious Allies at the end of World War II. When she meets a mysterious young refugee, Thomas (Kai Malina), she must put her trust in the very person she was always taught to hate in order to survive. Shortland talked to me about the challenges of making a film that delves into gray areas and raises questions about every concept we have of family, love and friendship. She discussed the book that inspired the film, her collaboration with screenwriter Robin Mukherjee, portraying the characters with objectivity while also giving them a sense of humanity,...

Most films about the subject take place during the era of Nazi power, many seen from the perspective of the Jews and other victims, and others, such as The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Good, looking in from the outside. We were sent a handful of trailers last week, and sadly we weren't able to get them all posted...or any of them really. So to make up for it, I'm going to put the trailers we got for The Bible, Red 2, Lore, and Emperor all into one convenient spot for you. Oh and as a special bonus the first trailer for Olympus Has Fallen just dropped as well.
Let's kick things off with the first trailer for Olympus Has Fallen (which just landed today). If you haven't heard of this film yet, it's pretty much the result of Die Hard and Air Force One having an illegitimate child together...and I think that's a good thing.
Next up is the trailer for an upcoming indie film, Lore:

Lore
Directed by Cate Shortland
Written by Cate Shortland and Robin Mukherjee
Australia/United Kingdom/Germany, 2012
Carrying her infant brother in her arms, Lore (Saskia Rosendahl) and her siblings enter a building full of displaced people. The atmosphere is depressive, filled with the angst and despair of its occupants. Her baby brother is crying with hunger, but she can’t feed him. At only fourteen, she’s too young to breastfeed, and doesn’t know how.
Lore finds a woman with a child of her own and offers her some jewelry to act as a wet nurse. She obliges and proceeds to feed him. The crying stops, but Lore just stands there, weighed down by her sudden and unversed burden to sustain her brother’s life. Her mother used to breastfeed him, but she, and Lore’s father, was arrested. They were both Nazis. So is Lore.
Flash back to the beginning of the film.

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...
