Hulu has enjoyed tremendous success with limited series based on true events, particularly the buzzworthy Candy. 2019's The Act, starring Patricia Arquette and Joey King, which followed the Gypsy Rose Blanchard story, and 2022's The Girl from Plainville, starring Elle Fanning as Michelle Carter, were both major hits for the streaming service. Hulu's 2022 limited series Candy, created by Robin Veith and Nick Antosca, might be their crowning achievement, as not only did it receive high ratings, but it also garnered acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
Candy stars Jessica Biel as Candy Montgomery, a Texas woman who killed her good friend Betty Gore with an axe after Betty confronted her about an affair with her husband, Allan Gore. The limited series explores Candy's life in the years leading up to the murder and the shocking trial that followed. It's a riveting exploration of rage and trauma, featuring a career-defining role from Biel.

It is not uncommon for a major network or a streaming service to develop a film or series surrounding a real-life crime case. Some famous movies and series based on crime cases were Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 and The Keepers, Lifetime’s Cleveland Abduction, 2007’s Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo starred Zodiac, and many more.
One such true case that made headlines was the gruesome murder of Betty Gore back in 1980, famously known as the Candy Montgomery case. The 1990s Stephen Gyllenhaal-directed television film A Killing In A Small Town was based on this case. Over three decades after its release, we are back again with new shows based on this perplexing story. However, what’s unusual this time is that Candy Montgomery’s case is made into a series by not just one but two networks almost simultaneously.

This story about Elizabeth Olsen and “Love & Death” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
What is it about Candy Montgomery that Hollywood finds so irresistible? With two high-profile limited series in consecutive years, the tale of a housewife-turned-accused ax murderer has proven tantalizing. In 2022, there was Hulu’s “Candy,” cocreated by Robin Veith and Nick Antosca and starring Jessica Biel as the woman acquitted of butchering the wife of her lover. Now there’s HBO Max’s “Love & Death,” an interpretation of the same gory tale, written and exec-produced by David E. Kelley and starring Elizabeth Olsen.
Olsen’s interest in stepping into Candy’s blood-soaked flip-flops had less to do with what Montgomery did or didn’t do and more with how she operated. “The appeal for me is that I don’t feel like I know how to use...

The horribly tragic true story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore has been grist for several true-crime dramas. During the summer of 1980, Montgomery stopped by her friend Gore's home to pick up a swimsuit for Gore's daughter. Gore allegedly confronted Montgomery, who was engaged in an affair with her husband. A fight ensued, and, per Montgomery, she murdered Gore in self-defense. The sticking point here is the viciousness of the killing: Gore was struck 41 times with an axe. Though Montgomery was found not guilty, many people in the Dallas suburb of Wylie, Texas believed she had murdered Gore in cold blood, and protested the verdict.
Barbara Hershey won a Primetime Emmy for playing a fictionalized version of Montgomery in Stephen Gyllenhaal's 1990 made-for-tv movie "A Killing in a Small Town." In 2022, Jessica Biel portrayed Montgomery opposite Melanie Lynskey's Gore in Nick Antosca and Robin Veith's Hulu series...

The phrase “if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all” is rarely all that useful when discussing popular entertainment. TV thrives on genre stories, telling seemingly infinite variations of doctor, detective, and demonic procedurals, all without losing the audience’s hard-earned attention. Plus, dismissing any story as nothing more than a carbon copy of what you’ve already seen typically overlooks the craft of good television and/or its evolution. Sure, you could argue if you’ve already seen “Columbo” or “Monk,” then you “get” what “Poker Face” is going to be — but then you’d be dismissing Natasha Lyonne’s smoky star power, Rian Johnson’s deft direction, and the artistic attributes within a smart “howcatchem.”
But when it comes to “Love and Death,” the (not HBO) Max original series from writer/producer David E. Kelley, previously released options prove as plentiful as they are hard to ignore.

“Based on a true story” used to be a titillating phrase when it appeared on screen – the promise that what you were about to watch would be all the more chilling because it really happened. A story so compelling you couldn’t make it up.
These days, those same five words fill me with absolute dread. Not just because they appear too often – which they do – but because they almost always indicate that what you’re about to watch is based on a real crime. A story so tragic you wish it was made up.
Candy, a needless, sexist five-part miniseries from Disney+, is based on a true story. Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive track from Ariel Marx’s score for Candy, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow.
The acclaimed limited series tells the true story of Candy Montgomery (Jessica Biel), a 1980 housewife and mother who did everything right—good husband, two kids, nice house, even the careful planning and execution of transgressions. But when the pressure of conformity builds within her, her actions scream for just a bit of freedom. With deadly results.
Known for crafting provocative soundscapes with both traditional and non-traditional instrumentation and performing techniques, Marx here created a distinctive series of backdrops ranging from brightly engaging to unnervingly dark, often within the same track. “Composing the score for ‘Candy’ was truly an incomparable dream. The show is deeply complex, and I was able to explore so many different aspects of these women’s lives with the score and palette,” says Marx,...

If you’ve seen Hulu’s limited series “Candy” — or even spotted ads for it — you know that Jessica Biel sports a short, tight perm that is many light years away from her natural flowing mane. You’ve probably also seen Melanie Lynskey‘s equally striking bob-with-bangs hairdo. Both are styles that “Candy” hair department head Katie Ballard modeled after the real-life women the actresses play: Candy Montgomery (Biel), a suburban Texas housewife who, in 1980, murdered her lover’s wife, Betty Gore (Lynskey) with an axe.
Because the limited series is based on a true story that got lots of news coverage, Ballard had plenty of sources to draw from, including the 1984 true-crime book about the case, “Evidence of Love”, by Jim Atkinson and Joe Bob Briggs. The visual record was just as rich. “Robin Veith, our showrunner, had quite a few photos already put together for us,” Ballard told TheWrap.

“It’s so wonderful to get to bring two projects on TV, at the same time with ‘Candy’ and with ‘Halo,'” declares Emmy nominee Pablo Schreiber (“Orange is the New Black”). For our recent webchat, he adds that “they were so different and it felt like a real blessing to be able to put those two out and have them on TV at the same time.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Schreiber stars in “Halo” as Master Chief, a genetically enhanced supersoldier fighting a villainous species of aliens and his own past demons. The action sci-fi epic was developed by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane, who adapted the series from the blockbuster Xbox franchise that is among the most popular video game series of all time. This story about Jessica Biel first appeared in The Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The year was 1980 and Wylie, Texas, was a small town of just over 3,000 residents when the grisly ax murder of local housewife Betty Gore rocked the community. And the scandal was only beginning, as subsequent days revealed that the primary suspect was her friend Candy Montgomery.
Hulu’s limited series “Candy” adapts the true crime tale with Jessica Biel starring as the equal parts effervescent and enigmatic woman who lends her name to the title. Co-created by Robin Veith and Nick Antosca, “Candy” unfolds its narrative in zigzags, all the better to keep its audience unsure of how they feel about the protagonist and her uncanny ability to get what she wants.

Spoler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched all five episodes of “Candy,” now streaming on Hulu.
“Candy” viewers knew that star Melanie Lynskey’s real-life husband, Jason Ritter, was appearing in the new series — but they didn’t expect to see Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel’s husband pop up as one of the other cops working the case of Betty’s murder.
As it turns out, it was Timberlake’s idea to join the true-crime show. While the duo often share scripts and notes with each other, this time was a bit different.
“He loved the the episodes too, and said, ‘Who’s playing this guy?’ And I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know. Probably an Atlanta local. We don’t really have any money left. We sort of spent it all on our main cast and this is one of our last cast members that we need to cast,...

Hulu beat HBO Max to the finish the line when it comes to telling the story of Candy Montgomery. The streamer released the first episode of the limited series, starring Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey, on May 9, introducing viewers to this sinister true-crime story that captivated the country in the '80s. In a few months, HBO Max will release its own take on the grisly crime, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Candy—an adaptation Candy writer Robin Veith is "actually excited" about, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Yes, the two shows are going to be compared to each other, but Veith doesn't think it's a big deal. "The thing about this story is there's...

For Jessica Biel, nailing down the specific look of Candy Montgomery, a real-life 1980s Texas housewife that is not all she seems to be, “was my most important thing.”
She told IndieWire in a recent Zoom interview that her and creators Robin Veith and Nick Antosca went into production on the new Hulu limited series event “Candy” trying to make sure their titular character would not be perceived as a caricature, “but when we tried on the wigs, we thought, ‘Oh, you know what, this actually is going to work.’ And then we put the glasses on and we all went, ‘Oh my God, this is going to work!’”
Biel recalled that her daily transformation into Montgomery was “Wig, costume, and then I’d step on set, glasses, and that was the linchpin of the look. That was the last thing that always went on.” Though it was only a half hour endeavor,...

Three women running current TV and streaming series took stock of progress as well as lingering paradoxes in an entertainment industry that is still processing both the #MeToo movement and the economic change wrought by the streaming boom.

There’s a certain moral repeated a few times during Hulu’s Candy, including in its first few minutes and its last. “The next time you’re sad because you didn’t get what you want, you just wait,” Candy (Jessica Biel) tells her Vacation Bible School kids, “because God has something even better for you.”
I guess it’s as cutely ironic a summation as any of what happens in Candy, which centers on a woman whose desire to shake up her outwardly blissful but secretly stultifying suburban life explodes in spectacularly gruesome fashion. Mostly, though, it feels like an attempt by the series to put a neat little bow on a narrative that, over five hourlong episodes, has become increasingly muddled and unwieldy.

Halfway through the final episode of “Candy,” I had to pause to answer the door. I was four and a half hours deep into Hulu’s newest “based on true events” limited series, this time about a suburban friendship that ended in horrifically fatal consequences in 1980. At this point, I’d become well and truly unnerved by the show’s sinister overtones, deliberately monochromatic palette, and anchoring performances from Jessica Biel (as acquitted murderer Candy Montgomery), Melanie Lynskey (as her neighbor and victim Betty Gore), and Pablo Schreiber. And yet, 30 seconds after I stopped watching the finale, I’d already forgotten I’d been watching the show at all.
To its credit, “Candy” — which debuts May 9 on Hulu and will air each of its five episodes in a row until the finale on May 13 — starts strong. Written by “Mad Men” alum Robin Veith, the premiere traces the day of, and after,...

One of the most oddly grueling parts of “Candy” is watching a man wait for a phone call. As Allan Gore (Pablo Schreiber) sits in silence, going over the reasons why he hasn’t heard from his wife Betty (Melanie Lynskey), you can almost see his mind running through dozens of scenarios where he’s already had his last conversation with her. Even before that phone call does come, it seems like he knows what on-screen text has already told the audience: June 13, 1980 was “the day she died.”
The death of Betty Gore at the hand of friend Candy Montgomery (Jessica Biel) is a well-documented saga that has since stretched far beyond the limits of Collin County, Texas, where both women lived with their husbands and their families. “Candy” isn’t without some of the true-crime TV touches that have preceded it in this subgenre. The real-life story of housewife Candy Montgomery finally answers what happens when you marry an ax murderer.
Set in the 1980s and based on “disturbingly true events,” the Hulu limited series “Candy” stars Jessica Biel as the titular Texas housewife and mother whose affair leads to fatal results. The series premieres Monday May 9, kicking off a five-night event leading up to the finale May 13. Watch the trailer below.

Jessica Biel is stepping into the shoes of one of true crime’s most notorious killers in the first trailer for Hulu’s “Candy.”
Biel stars in the series as Candy Montgomery, a seemingly normal housewife in small town Wylie, Tex., who was convicted in 1980 for the brutal axe murder of her neighbor Betty Gore, played in the show by Melanie Lynskey.
The teaser trailer shows Biel transform into Candy, with curly hair and large rimmed-glasses. Footage of her going about her daily life in suburbia is juxtaposed with narration from her trial, as a lawyer played by Raúl Esparza (“Hannibal”) questions her about her relationship with Betty.
“I had no angry feelings towards her if that’s what the question is,” Biel says in the trailer. “We were…friends.”

The true crime limited series Love and Death will see Elizabeth Olsen playing notorious axe murderer Candy Montgomery, who hacked her best friend to death in 1980 as the result of a deadly love-triangle. Set in the small Texas town of Wylie, Love and Death will be based on Jim Atkinson and Joe Bob Briggs' book 'Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs', as well as a number of Texas Monthly articles from the time.
This suggests that the limited series, from Lionsgate Television, will focus on the events leading up to the attack as well as the aftermath of the murder and the effect it had on the community, which was left reeling in the wake of the horrific event. "This is a gripping story about the frustrations and desires of two women in a small town that culminates in a terrible act of violence,...

Whether she’s being dragged screaming across the floor of a mental hospital in “Invisible Man” or lumbering drunkenly with a cigarette and a sneer at a decorous dinner party in “Shirley,” Elisabeth Moss doesn’t take her roles home with her at the end of the day. “I don’t even take it to the car,” she said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Or back to my trailer.”
