Mere days after she wrapped Dying for Sex, Jenny Slate chopped off all her hair.
She’d had basically the same style all her adult life, but through the process of filming the FX cancer comedy, her locks began to take on new meaning. “I felt that my long hair held the sadness, and I just needed to reboot my physicality,” she says, explaining how she got what was left of her character out of her head. “Usually an extreme haircut means, ‘Oh hey, looks like you’re getting divorced!’ ” she notes. “But this was the first time I’ve changed my appearance because something good happened to me.”
And really, Dying for Sex should be very good to, and for, Jenny Slate. It’s the sort of sure-to-get-noticed prestige limited series — debuting April 4 — that can potentially alter an actor’s career trajectory. Not that Slate, 42, needs much of a course correction.

Not every film with good reviews becomes a major commercial hit, and not all films with bad reviews are unpopular. Just like last year there have been a series of examples, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, The Fall Guy, and Red One.
Now, Netflix's latest film The Electric State is experiencing a similar trend. Although the film didn't receive a theatrical release and it headed straight to Netflix, the early reviews ahead of the Mar. 14 release called it "one of the worst movies of the year." The official numbers prove otherwise, as Tudumcrowns The Electric State the biggest film of the week.
For the week between Mar. 10 and 16,The Electric State amassed 25.2 million views and 53.8 million hours viewed. That is a huge feat considering the movie had only 2 full days to achieve that before Netflix stopped counting.
It became the No. 1 movie in 47 countries, including the U.S.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the Russo Brothers, have directed some of the biggest movies of all time, with their film Avengers: Endgame coming in second place just behind James Cameron’s Avatar – and on March 14th, the Netflix streaming service released their latest film, the robot adventure The Electric State. The film topped the English films chart on Netflix over its debut weekend – but managed to do so with a surprisingly low number of views. The Electric State reached #1 with 25.2 million views, which pales in comparison to the debut numbers of recent hits like Back in Action (46.8 million views) and Carry On (42 million views), but is slightly higher than last year’s release of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Still, this is the third Millie Bobby Brown-led film to debut at #1 for Netflix, following last year’s Damsel (which got started with 35.3 million views) and 2022’s Enola Holmes 2,...

Critics Hated The Russo Brothers' The Electric State, But the Audience Score Tells a Different Story

Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.
However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.
While most of the critics called The Electric State a bad movie, the audience fully disagreed. Following its Mar. 14 release on Netflix, The Electric State has an audience approval score of 76%. While the score is not exactly a reason to start celebrating and greenlighting a sequel just yet,...

Three years after their last feature film, “The Gray Man,” premiered on Netflix and one year before they make their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directors Anthony and Joe Russo are back. Their latest offering, “The Electric State,” is a sci-fi blockbuster with a hefty price tag. The film, which continues the Russos’ ongoing creative partnership with Netflix, has a reported budget of $320 million — making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.
Only films based on pre-existing pieces of intellectual property typically get that kind of financial support in Hollywood these days. Is “The Electric State” based on a book, though? Here is what you should know about the new, expensive Netflix film’s origins.
Is “The Electric State” based on a book?
Yes! “The Electric State” is not, however, based on a traditional book. It is, instead, loosely based on a 2018 illustrated novel by acclaimed Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.

An action-packed adventure with a 90’s backbone awaits viewers in Netflix’s The Electric State starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
The film also features the voice work of Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate and more. Based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, the film watches Michelle (Brown) and Keats (Pratt) venture into the dangerous Exclusion Zone and the heart of artificial intelligence firm Sentre to try and rescue Michelle’s brother. The politics of robots vs. humans fall to the side as each of them has their own robot companion, and they meet more on their adventures to track down Christopher (Woody Norman), who Michelle was told died in a car accident that also took the lives of their parents.
Several 90’s needle drops play in many different scenes from the more sentimental ones to the high-adrenaline ones. Some are performed by a piano-playing Taco robot.

The Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe) are the directors of this incredibly expensive Netflix sci-fi film that’s hitting our screens today, a true retro-futuristic spectacle starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
Netflix is betting big on spectacle with this movie based on Simon Stålenhag’s book. However, it’s an adaptation that takes quite a few liberties. Those expecting a faithful adaptation or some transcendental reflection should quickly forget about it, because “The Electric State” is all about spectacle, comedy, and reaching wide audiences with a very light, yet entertaining movie.

The 2018 illustrated novel that Anthony and Joe Russo’s The Electric State is based on is an elegiac tone poem about an America left derelict by its stewards. The nation that Simon Stålenhag envisioned is a 3,500-mile drug den, where people are in nonstop, VR-mainlined communion with the enormous, happy corporate mascots that humanity created. Constant stimulation and flashing lights in your VR helmet is what amounts to self-care here.
To the extent that the Russos’ mega-budget Netflix adaptation plays out like it wants its audience to feel as if they’re at the mercy of capitalism, The Electric State could be read as a subversive, metatextual success. But it’s obvious that the film is meant to be taken at face value. There’s nothing behind its contemptible eyes, no spine to house the fading diode that once contained a soul. This is “content” at its most nakedly bankrupt.

The interesting thing about the Russo Brothers as a directing pair is that they have single-handedly directed the best of what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to offer, but their output outside the MCU has been questionable at best. From Cherry to The Gray Man, critics haven't been wowed by their work that doesn't involve Iron Man or Captain America, even though they seem like capable filmmakers. The brothers are attempting another endeavor outside the MCU called The Electric State, which is based on the 2018 novel of the same name. The reviews are beginning to pour in for the Netflix release, and its disastrous Rotten Tomatoes score has proven they should perhaps stick with superheroes.
The Electric State had its world premiere at the Grauman's Egyptian Theatre on Feb. 24 and now that the embargo has been lifted, reviews are beginning to be released online and they are resoundingly negative. The...

The debut score for The Electric State has been revealed, according to early reviews ahead of the movie's launch on Netflix on March 14. Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, the sci-fi adventure film is not off to the best start with its critical reception.
As of now, The Electric State has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 10%. The number will fluctuate as more reviews are submitted in the coming days, but as it stands, this marks a new low for Joe Russo and Anthony Russo as the lowest-rated film the siblings have ever directed. The record was previously held by 2006's You, Me and Dupree, which was scored at 20%. The unfortunate reception comes as the Russo Bros. are preparing to start production on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the upcoming big-budget MCU sequels.

Plot: In an alternate 1990s devasted by a war between humans and robots, a young woman (Millie Bobby Brown) teams up with a former soldier (Chris Pratt) to find her long-lost brother, who’s somewhere in a no man’s land populated by the robots who once fought mankind.
Review: The Electric State is perhaps Netflix’s most ambitious film to date. Sporting a budget that’s said to be in the $320 million range, which would make it one of the most expensive movies ever made, it’s as lavish and high-concept as anything you’d find in theaters. Yet, it also takes intriguing source material, in this case, Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same title, and turns it into episodic, easy-to-watch fare you can wander in and out of without missing much plot. As such, it’s impressively mounted but still a streaming movie to its core for better or for worse.

As such, it’s impressively mounted but still a streaming movie to its core for better or for worse.

Netflix teams with Joe and Anthony Russo again for a large-scale, blockbuster-style sci-fi adventure that seems tailor-made for Imax, except you will be watching it on your couch. Hopefully your TV is really big.
With elements of 2023’s The Creator, 1986’s Short Circuit and the wondrous Wall-e among others, Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel serves as a starting point for screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley and this humongous big-screen adaptation set, like the book, in an alternate version of the 1990s where Bill Clinton as president engages in an all-out war against a robot uprising. Humans are being attacked, but it is the robots who had all the humanity as it turns out: They lost everything and now are relegated to the sidelines in a world that once was an idyllic place for them.
Now humans live in a virtual-reality world much of the time and that is how...

The quintessential Hollywood couple has found themselves in a web of accusations and counterclaims with director Justin Baldoni. What’s new in this drama? Well, per recent reports, they’re worried about their private texts getting exposed in court, which could spill some serious tea.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the Russo Brothers, have directed some of the biggest movies of all time, with their film Avengers: Endgame coming in second place just behind James Cameron’s Avatar – and on March 14th, the Netflix streaming service will be releasing their latest film, the robot adventure The Electric State. This one is an adaptation of a narrative artbook / graphic novel from acclaimed artist and author Simon Stålenhag, and features a prologue that takes place before the events of Stålenhag’s book.
The story of this film begins in July of 2017, when Free League launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for Stålenhag’s book called The Electric State, which had the following description: In late 1997, a runaway teenager and her yellow toy robot travel west through a strange USA, where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside heaped together with the discarded trash of a...
