When a film achieves a certain level of authenticity, it doesn't ultimately matter if the subject is foreign territory to the viewer. Maybe you grew up around bull riders, or maybe your only experience is riding a mechanical bull at that one bar in Hollywood that offers one.
Ride, in actor Jake Allyn's directorial debut, offers authenticity to the max as it brings us down south and explores a tough industry that may or may eat its young, as they say. From a layered and heartfelt script he wrote with co-star Josh Plasse, Allyn (No Man's Land) achieves true stardom here in a genuinely impactful drama that delves deep into universal issues such as addiction, losing health battles, messy families, and more. It's a can't-miss for folks in the Lone Star State and really anyone...

C. Thomas Howell stars in Jake Allyn's new rodeo drama, Ride, about the struggles of three generations of bull riders and their attempts to raise money for a young girl's cancer treatment. While Howell's character doesn't compete in any rodeos during Ride, just one look at his cowboy hat-wearing persona and withered look and you can tell he's been around the block in this biz as he watches his son (Allyn) try to make a name for himself in the same sport. In real life, Howell has been acting since his childhood years and is still keeping busy with projects today. "I was 13 when I did E.T., and I was 15 when I did The Outsiders," he said, continuing:
"I had a career as a young boy that I never anticipated, and I was very grateful for it. But I'm almost 58 now...

If you’re going to set your movie somewhere in the intersection of two worlds fraught with danger — say, bull-riding competitions and hardcore crime — it’s always a good idea to cast actors who look and sound comfortable, and credible, in both places. There are quite a few things to admire in “Ride,” director Jake Allyn’s suspenseful drama about a rodeo family driven to extremes while trying to pay their young daughter’s medical bills. But the first thing that sticks out is how much verisimilitude lead players C. Thomas Howell and Forrie J. Smith bring to the table. If you look at their backgrounds, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Howell may still be best remembered by fans for his roles in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Outsiders” (“Look! It’s Ponyboy!”) and John Milius’ “Red Dawn.” But in addition to the scads of other movie and TV credits on his resume,...

Some traits skip a generation. Others, such as bull riding, don't necessarily follow the same pattern. Ride, a triumphant new indie film out of Texas, explores three generations in this tough industry and all that it has to offer. From director-star Jake Allyn (No Man's Land), Ride also benefits from an extremely talented supporting cast, including veteran character actor and former rodeo star C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders). The heartfelt new drama is set in modern Texas but basks in decades-old traditions that have taken their toll on a hardened family trying to make it in the rodeo biz amid skyrocketing inflation and more. You'll jump for joy at times and find yourself hugging your pillow for comfort at others.
It's a wild ride, pun intended, and we recently caught up with Allyn and Howell in separate interviews to learn more about their real-life passion for rodeos, past work with certain icons,...

Mare of Easttown fans have been waiting to see if the HBO series will return for a second season and star Kate Winslet spoke about the series in a recent podcast appearance. The actress is conflicted about making another season of the limited series, partly because playing Mare was 'frighteningly hard' for her.
Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Guy Pearce, Cailee Spaeny, David Denman, John Douglas Thompson, Patrick Murney, James McArdle, Sosie Bacon, Joe Tippett, and Neal Huff also star in the series, which follows a Pennsylvania detective, Marianne "Mare" Sheehan, as she investigates a teenage mother's murder while trying to keep her own personal life from falling apart.

Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, said he basically doesn’t know whether Mare of Easttown will be back.
“People tend to think that those decisions are like ABC in the 70s – ‘We we need more Mare, we need more Mare!’ the exec told a press gathering in New York City today of the acclaimed limited series.
“It’s a decision with Brad [Ingelsby] and with Kate [Winslet]. I would rely on them coming to us, saying, ‘We think there’s more, here is what it is,” he said, “It’s not a foregone conclusion that just because something does well” it gets another season.
“It starts with the creative team. I am never the one driving it.”

On HBO’s smash hit limited series “Mare of Easttown,” Julianne Nicholson plays Lori Ross, the childhood friend of police detective Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet). Lori becomes embroiled in the murder investigation of teen mom Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny), who is the daughter of her husband John’s (Joe Tippett) cousin Kenny (Patrick Murney). Julianne Nicholson has crashed into the top 10 of the Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actress race. Prior to the “Mare of Easttown” finale on Sunday, Nicholson was in 12th place in the odds, but she has since risen to ninth place following her gut-wrenching performance in the highly anticipated closer that temporarily crashed HBO Max.
As Lori Ross, the best friend of thorny detective Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet), Nicholson played a seemingly quiet role, a dutiful wife and mother whose world implodes in the finale when her 13-year-old son Ryan (Cameron Mann) is arrested for the murder of Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny). The revelation that Lori’s husband, John (Joe Tippett), a serial philanderer, had an affair with 17-year-old Erin, who’s also the daughter of his cousin Kenny (Patrick Murney), and fathered her hearing-impaired son, DJ, was only one of the blows Lori had to withstand in the emotionally charged episode.

Saturday Night Live took aim at prestige TV this weekend with a parody of Kate Winslet’s HBO crime drama Mare of Easttown — which, in the sketch comedy’s jocular love language, translated to “Murdur Durdur.”
In the clip above, McKinnon plays Kare, a “grizzled lady detective with a very specific accent” who attempts to solve the murder of someone’s “durdur” (that’s daughter for any English speakers out there) in a small Pennsylvania town full of very “specific whites.” The commercial ribs the state’s love of Wawa and hockey, and even includes a special cameo by Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty.

Kate Winslet takes on a detective fixed on solving a small-town murder in HBO’s new “Mare of Easttown” trailer, which released on Wednesday.
The limited series — created, written and executive produced by showrunner Brad Inglesby — features Winslet in the role of Mare Sheehan, a detective from Pennsylvania. The plot centers around her attempt to solve a local murder while also balancing her own personal life, which is rapidly falling apart around her.
The actor is joined by stars Julianne Nicholson, who plays Mare’s best friend, and Evan Peters, who takes on the role of a county detective tasked with helping Mare solve the crime. The two detectives butt heads over the course of the investigation.
As if solving a murder were not difficult enough, Mare’s life is further complicated by the unsolicited opinions of her mother (Jean Smart) and her strong-headed daughter (Angourie Rice) whom she cares for.

It’s been nearly a decade since Kate Winslet starred in HBO’s adaptation of Mildred Pierce for which earned an Emmy win. She returns to HBO with the new limited series Mare of Easttown which debuts on April 18 on the premium cabler and will be available on HBO Max.
In the crime drama, Winslet plays the titular Mare Sheehan a small-town Pennsylvania detective in Delaware County who investigates a local murder as life crumbles around her. Mare of Easttown explores the dark side of a close community and offers an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present. It’s a different from playing a single mother struggling during the Great Depression with an overambitious daughter in Mildred Pierce — but it certainly brings similar energy. Winslet was joined at TCA by series creator, writer and showrunner Brad Ingelsby and...

If you perpetually mispronounced “Downton Abbey” as “Downtown Abbey,” you only have a few months to master the pronunciation of HBO’s new limited series, “Mare of Easttown” — that’s mare, like a horse, not mayor, like Ted Danson plays on “Mr. Mayor.”

Guy Pearce will reunite with his “Mildred Pierce” co-star Kate Winslet for another upcoming HBO miniseries, “Mare of Easttown,” Variety has confirmed. Both Pearce and Winslet won Emmy awards in 2011 for their performances in the five-part adaptation, which garnered 21 nominations altogether and five wins.
Pearce is “The Crown” actor Ben Miles’ replacement for the role of Richard Ryan in the limited series, a visiting creative writing professor who wrote a National Book Award-winning novel 25 years ago, but has not lived up to his early potential. Miles left the show over a year ago due to scheduling conflicts. Pearce will co-star alongside Winslet, who plays Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective whose life crumbles around her as she investigates a local murder.
“Mare of Easttown” will prominently focus on family and community. Winslet is one of its executive producers.
The series is a co-production between HBO and wiip, the CAA-backed independent studio headed by Paul Lee.

I recently finished watching the first season of Seven Seconds on Netflix and I thought it was a great series with well-drawn out complex characters. It also carried a power message. If you haven't seen it yet, you really need to watch it.
I was looking forward to seeing what they would do with Season 2, but that's not going to happen. Netflix has canceled the series. I guess it's okay though, because the first season stands on its own and didn't leave audiences with a cliffhanger.
The series was created and executive produced by Veena Sud (The Killing), and the story centered on a white cop who accidentally hits and critically injures a black teenager. That tragic event causes a northeastern city to explode with racial tension, and there's an attempted to cover up the accident, and everything leads to the trial of the century.
