“Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints” is officially returning for Part Two on Fox Nation beginning Friday, April 4 and will roll out throughout Easter, Variety can exclusively reveal, along with the first trailer.
From host, narrator, executive producer and Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese, the docuseries tracks over 2,000 years of history, exploring religious figures like Francis of Assisi, Moses the Black and Mary Magdalene. The first season featured Joan of Arc, John the Baptist, Sebastian and Maximilian Kolbe.
The first episode “Francis of Assisi” releases April 4 and takes place in the 13th century, following Francis as he experiences the horrors of war and finds new meaning later in life by starting a brotherhood and going face-to-face with the leader Sultan Al-Kamil. The second episode “Moses the Black,” dropping April 11, follows the runaway slave Moses in the 4th century as he gives up violence and his former life in favor of a remote desert monastery.

Martin Scorsese is teaming up with Apple Original Films again after “Killers of the Flower Moon.” His next project is “Home,” based on a novel by Marilynne Robinson. Scorsese will write, direct, and produce the movie. Leonardo DiCaprio, a frequent collaborator, will star in it. This marks their seventh film together, following hits like “The Departed” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
The story comes from Robinson’s Gilead series, set in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa. It explores themes of faith and rural life. “Home” focuses on a family dealing with tough pasts. Glory Boughton returns to care for her dying father, a reverend.
Her brother Jack, the family’s troubled son, also comes back after 20 years away. Jack struggles with alcohol and a difficult history but remains his father’s favorite. The novel shows Jack trying to reconnect with his sister Glory and facing tension with his traditionalist father and godfather,...

While it’s been very difficult of late to figure out what Martin Scorsese will follow Killers of the Flower Moon (already a couple years out from its Cannes premiere), today brings some of the closest confirmation of where he’ll head next. Surprise: Leonardo DiCaprio is coming with.
Per Publisher’s Weekly, Apple Original Films have obtained rights to Marilynne Robinson’s four Gilead novels, the second of which, Home, Scorsese has discussed since 2023. DiCaprio will lead the film, produced by Todd Field, who’s co-written Home with Scorsese and Kent Jones while said to be handling the first entry, Gilead, though the article notes an ambiguity around “plans to adapt the remaining books in the series.”
The news suggests DiCaprio would play Jack Boughton, a wayward alcholic who returns to his hometown of Gilead to take care of a dying father alongside his sister Glory. These roles recur in Robinson’s other books,...

Exclusive: HanWay Films has expanded its classics library after being appointed to represent The Cohen Film Collection.
The library of Cohen Media Group’s founder, Charles S. Cohen, comprises more than one hundred restored classic titles spanning from the silent era to the present day, including The Buster Keaton Collection and The Merchant Ivory Collection.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed and Cohen Media Group is the owner of HanWay, having acquired the company in 2022.
Late last year Charles Cohen’s media group hit choppy waters when the company was forced to sell multiple assets including British arthouse exhibitor and distributor Curzon to Fortress Investment Group. The company was acquired in a foreclosure auction involving multiple Cohen assets, including the Landmark cinema chain. Fortress had lent Cohen $534M but sued him last year for default. Cohen acquired Curzon in late 2019 amid a buying spree by the U.S. real estate developer.

Exclusive: Edmund Donovan, an up-and-comer known for roles in Alex Garland’s Civil War and Sundance genre-bender Your Monster, has landed a key role opposite Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee in Late Fame, the new film from director Kent Jones (Diane), which is entering production this week.
Written by May December‘s Samy Burch, Late Fame is a portrait of Ed Saxberger (Dafoe), a postal worker who wrote and published poetry such a long time ago that he’s forgotten he ever was a poet. When a group of young writers and students rediscovers one of his books and reclaims him as one of their own, he finds, against his better judgment, that he likes it: the attention and the hero worship draw him out of his solitary routines and renew his spirit. How quickly he starts to see himself as a true artist… how coarse and vulgar his old friends begin to look.

Following part one of our 2025 movie preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. 28 Years Later (Danny Boyle; June 20)
It’s a shame the 28 Later (?) franchise lost its shaky, grainy video-camera aesthetic that defined the mood and feel of the first entry, 28 Days Later. But it’s a godsend that they’ve brought back Alex Garland and Danny Boyle, the original writer-director combo who grabbed our attention with the otherwise beleaguered premise that is a zombie apocalypse. With the promise of their collaboration––which has also led to The Beach and Sunshine––and a feral Ralph Fiennes, there should be a lot to look forward to in discovering how things have developed in this fictional world over the nearly three decades since its outbreak. – Luke H.
49. Heads or Tails? (Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis)

The now eighteen-year-old film, released on October 6th, 2006, was met with incredible box office success, grossing a total of $291.5 million with a budget of $90 million. The Departed was met with critical acclaim and currently sits at a solid 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unsurprisingly, the Oscar-winning film is often rated among some of Scorceses best works.

Martin Scorsese has quite a few projects percolating at the moment. There's The Wager, based on the David Grann book The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder, with Leonardo DiCaprio expected to star. There's also a proposed Frank Sinatra biopic, and a film about the life of Jesus Christ the former of which may or may not still be in the works. And then there's Home, an adaptation of Pulitzer prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson's 2008 novel of the same name.
The director first spoke about the project in 2023, indicating at the time he'd written a script with Tr and In the Bedroom writer-director Todd Field, along with Kent Jones, the filmmaker behind Diane and Hitchcock/Truffaut. Scorsese mentioned Home again in a new interview with The Canadian Press in November 2024, saying there was a "very strong possibility" it would be his next film, but that a "scheduling issue" might prevent it from happening.

“Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints,” an eight-episode docudrama series about the lives of Christian saints, will premiere on Fox Nation this Sunday, November 17. The series is directed by the famous director Martin Scorsese.
The series is Scorsese’s most in-depth look at religious topics to date. It features dramatic recreations of extraordinary people who showed amazing faith throughout history. The first four episodes cover two thousand years and will air every week until December 8. The rest of the shows will come out during the Holy season in the spring of 2025.
“I’ve lived with the stories of the saints for most of my life,” Scorsese said, putting the project in a personal context. The show will focus on eight people from different times in history who had to deal with big problems while staying true to their faith beliefs.

The cast of Willem Dafoe's next movie has been shaken up big time just two months before it's set to enter production. A new report from Deadline revealed that Greta Lee, best known for her role in Past Lives, will replace Sandra Hller in the upcoming drama, Late Fame. Hller had to drop out of the project due to a scheduling conflict, and now Lee will play Gloria, a theater actress who turns the life of Dafoe's poet protagonist, Ed Zaxberger, upside down. Samy Burch wrote the script for Late Fame and Kent Jones will direct, and the film aims to begin production in January. Late Fame is based on the novel of the same name by Arthur Schnitzler, the Austrian author who passed away nearly 100 years ago in 1931.

Despite closing in on his 82nd birthday in November, revered Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese insists his days behind the camera are far from over. The Oscar-winning director claims he has "no intention" of retiring after The Life of Jesus and his upcoming Frank Sinatra biopic.
Speaking with World of Reel, Scorsese clarified his future when asked about his plans at the National Museum of Cinema, where he was honored on Oct. 7. According to Scorsese, he's hoping he has enough "strength and money" to finish his Jesus and Sinatra movies and wants to continue working until he's no longer able. I have no intention of retiring, Scorsese said. The film about Frank Sinatra is only postponed while the one about Jesus I am working on. I hope God gives me the strength and money to finish them."

Martin Scorsese is far from even thinking about retiring.
The auteur seemingly addressed rumors of him slowing down following the Variety report that his two previously announced projects, “The Life of Jesus” and a Frank Sinatra biopic, have both been shelved.
Scorsese instead unveiled a new documentary about marine archaeology during the 2024 Turin Film Festival, via The Hollywood Reporter, and said that he will still be a tentpole of cinema for as long as he is on this earth.

Gone are the days when cinephiles could just expect “Cannes on the Hudson” from the New York Film Festival. In his fifth year since assuming leadership of the selection committee from Kent Jones, artistic director Dennis Lim continues to bring both vitality and variety to the festival. If there’s a near-constant among the changes, it’s Hong Sang-soo having two movies in the main slate. (This year it’s By the Stream and A Traveler’s Needs.)
Elder statesmen like David Cronenberg, Mike Leigh, and Paul Schrader return with their latest films. But this 62nd edition of the festival, which runs from September 27 to October 24, doesn’t belong to the veterans. If any streak runs through the main slate, it’s the prominence of second features, including RaMell Ross’s Nickel Boys (this year’s opening-night selection), Dea Kulumbegashvili’s April, and Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light.

Martin Scorsese will reunite with Andrew Garfield for his next feature, The Life Of Jesus: more on the new project here.
Martin Scorsese had promised to get back out making movies quickly once he was done with his promotional and awards work on Killers Of The Flower Moon, and he’s set to be keeping his word. As had been strongly suggested, he’s going to be making a film about Jesus Christ next, that appears to be going by the title The Life Of Jesus.
The film will reteam Martin Scorsese with Andrew Garfield, with whom he made the movie Silence. The plan, as previously discussed, is for this to be a much slimmer film in terms of runtime that Scorsese’s last couple of outings. A running time of less than 90 minutes has been talked about.

No major film festival is complete without at least one Love Letter To Cinema™ from a filmmaker of some renown, to advocate the joys of the medium to an audience that doesn’t have to be told twice. French writer-director and Cannes regular Arnaud Desplechin brings that to the Croisette this year with “Filmlovers!,” a duly warm and nostalgia-washed cine-valentine, but one with a little more to say than just, “Movies, amirite?” Indeed, the film’s somewhat inelegant English-language title risks concealing the more specific focus of this unassuming but winning hybrid documentary: The French title, “Spectateurs!,” makes clear this is first and foremost a celebration of spectatorship rather than filmmaking, probing the dynamics of cinema audiences and their relationship to the screen. In either language, it’s impassioned enough to earn its exclamation point.

For his tenth Cannes feature premiere, Arnaud Desplechin chose to present a docu-fictional love letter to cinema. Two years after Brother and Sister was in Competition, Spectateurs (or Filmlovers!) is one of the festival’s Special Screenings, an effervescent walk down memory lane with a director who has helped shape contemporary French cinema for the better. It’s not hard for a Frenchman to be a cinephile––almost everyone is trained in film knowledge, either formally or informally, as part of their cultural upbringing. But Filmlovers! manages to set itself apart from all the other meta-documentaries or essays about how cinema made their director the person they are today. Instead it is both an honest and highly poetic feature that quite naturally absorbs film and literary references to address the structural role cinema has played for both Desplechin himself and our way of viewing the world.

In the six years since his accomplished narrative directorial debut Diane, we’ve been wondering when Kent Jones would announce his follow-up. As he continues to work with Martin Scorsese on scripting his two upcoming Jesus projects, Jones’ next directorial feature has now been unveiled.
Variety reports Sandra Hüller and Willem Dafoe will lead Jones’ drama Late Fame, scripted by Samy Burch (May December) and produced by Killer Films. The film follows Dafoe as Ed Saxberger, “who wrote a book of poetry a long time ago that no one ever cared about. When a group of young artists rediscover his work, he must reassess his genius. The wild card in the group is Gloria (Hüller), a talented and mercurial theatre actress who toys with affections and who is all set to be admired by Saxberger, this legendary figure from a gritty New York golden age.” Described as “wickedly ironic and unexpectedly poignant,...

The nearly year-long span from discovering Janet Planet‘s existence to seeing a single frame was fraught with worry. What if the extraordinarily talented Annie Baker fumbled her transition into filmmaking? Nothing catastrophic, surely––no sane person’s faulting Michael Jordan for his minor-league stint––but to paraphrase Kent Jones on John Carpenter: America doesn’t have so many great directors to spare that it can afford Annie Baker failing.
From frame one it was clear no such thing would happen. Janet Planet‘s a case study in a genius trying a new medium––base understanding of its what and how and why, but lack of precedent or traditional method yielding something rather new. Ahead of the film’s June 21 limited release, A24 have released a first trailer, albeit one that sells a different movie: scored by the Roches’ “Hammond Song” and cut to emphasize some wittier dialogue, it...

As Martin Scorsese continues developing his long-announced Jesus film, a first look at the planned project emerges thanks to an excerpt from his consultant's book.
Per Variety, Scorsese's consultant on the Jesus movie, Father Antonio Spadaro, published the draft and a series of conversations he had with Scorsese in his new book, Dialoghi sulla fede (Dialogues on Faith), in his native Italy. The last chapter from the book, titled "Screenplay for a Possible Film on Jesus," is a 20-page text Scorsese gave Father Spadaro permission to publish. While the text is an early draft and not the actual screenplay Scorsese will work from for the movie, it offers insight into the director's motivations and approach to the film. “When the idea of making cinema started to become concrete, I had in mind to make a film about Christ in the modern world, in modern clothes, shot in 16mm and...

Martin Scorsese is set to both host and produce a new religious documentary series for Fox Nation. Titled Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints, the eight-part series will chronicle the lives of (you guessed it) eight different saints and will debut on November 16th.
Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints will cover the stories of figures like Joan of Arc and John the Baptists through re-enactments and on-camera discussions between Scorsese and historical experts. Created by Matti Leshem, the show features direction from Elizabeth Chomko and writing by Kent Jones. With the announcement, Scorsese joins the likes of Kevin Costner, Rob Lowe, and Dan Aykroyd, who have all fronted projects for the Fox News-run streaming service in recent years.

Last May, after “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese traveled to Rome with his wife, Helen Morris, to attend a conference titled “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination.” There, the director announced that he had responded to an appeal by Pope Francis to artists “in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.”
The conference was organized by Jesuit publication “La Civiltà Cattolica.” It took place after the journal’s editor, Father Antonio Spadaro, held a series of one-on-one conversations with Scorsese that have just come out in Italy in a book published by La nave di Teseo titled “Dialoghi sulla fede” (“Dialogues on Faith”).
The final chapter of this book is titled, as translated from Italian, “Screenplay for a Possible Film on Jesus” by Scorsese. Spadaro, in the book’s introduction, specifies...

Good things come to those who wait. No, five-ish years isn’t nearly the craziest gap in a director’s filmography, but Joel and Ethan Coen sure seemed ready to take their leave after The Ballad of Buster Scruggs––Joel for The Tragedy of Macbeth, Ethan to the (so I’ve heard) very funny Drive-Away Dolls. Whether you consider the duo geniuses, sadists, pseuds, or absolutely essential, to paraphrase Kent Jones on John Carpenter: America doesn’t have so many great directors to spare that it can afford to let the Coen brothers fall through the cracks.
Great news, then, that the last handful of years are more respite than severance. Speaking to the Tromsø International Film Festival (a different kind of TIFF) in promotion of Dolls, Ethan Coen said he and Joel have already scripted their reunion: “a pure horror film, and it gets very bloody.” One, he adds,...

Martin Scorsese plans to make a film about the life of Jesus Christ, focusing on his teachings and presenting him as a compassionate figure. The script for the film, co-written by Scorsese and Kent Jones, is based on the book A Life of Jesus by Shusaku Endo. Scorsese's religious upbringing and previous work exploring religious ideas make him a fitting choice to adapt Endo's nuanced depiction of Jesus.

Martin Scorsese confirms his next project will be a Jesus movie, exploring his teachings in a present-day setting. Adaptation of book by Shūsaku Endō, who wrote the source novel for 2016’s Silence, is understood to be set mostly in the present day
Martin Scorsese is to follow up his triumphant true-crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon with an 80-minute film about Jesus designed to “take away the negative[s] … associated with organised religion”.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Scorsese explained the thinking behind the project, an adaptation of A Life of Jesus by writer Shūsaku Endō (a Japanese Catholic whose 1966 novel Silence was previously adapted by Scorsese). Scorsese said he and his writing collaborator Kent Jones had finished the screenplay and were “swimming in inspiration” for a film reportedly set largely in the present day that “focus[es] on Jesus’s core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn’t proselytise”.

Martin Scorsese is making a(nother) film about Jesus Christ, and he intends it to be shorter than his last couple of movies.
We learned back in May of last year that Martin Scorsese intended to make another film about Jesus once he was finished with Killers Of The Flower Moon, his epic tale of love and betrayal that takes place in the heart of the Osage Nation during the 1920s.
Of course, Scorsese has tackled the topic of Jesus Christ before, in 1988’s The Last Temptation Of Christ, which reshaped some of the events laid out in the gospels depicting the life of Christ. Religion was also a key theme in his more recent movie, Silence.
What’s more, themes that are tangential to religion such as guilt, sin, forgiveness and redemption are never far from the surface in the filmmaker’s work. Still, Scorsese has stated that with...

Martin Scorsese has completed his screenplay for the film about Jesus he first teased in May, the director told Los Angeles Times in a story that published Monday. Scorsese said his project will film later this year and is expected to be only 80 minutes long.
“I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion,” Scorsese said. The film does not yet appear to have a distributor.
Scorsese co-wrote the new project with critic and filmmaker Kent Jones. It is based on Shūsaku Endō’s book A Life of Jesus — Endo also wrote Silence, which Scorsese adapted for the screen in 2016 with actors Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson.

Martin Scorsese is 81 years old, but thankfully has no plans to retire. Last year he released the massive crime-drama "Killers of the Flower Moon," and it looks like he's gearing up to shoot his next film (or picture, as he'd call it) sometime this year. In 2023, Scorsese visited the Vatican and came away announcing that he was planning a new film about the life of a guy you might have heard of — Jesus H. Christ, or Jesus, as he's commonly known. We now know more about this project thanks to a profile in the L.A. Times.
Per the profile, Scorsese has put together a script with Kent Jones, the director of the documentary "Hitchcock/Truffaut." Scorsese says he and Jones are "swimming in inspiration" and still "figuring things out," but the plan is to shoot the film sometime this year.
