Paul Hyett’s debut movie The Seasoning House blew me away. With its hard-hitting story and an incredible performance from Rosie Day, It was one of my favourite films of 2013. He followed it up with something completely different, the highly entertaining werewolf movie set on a train Howl, so I was now very much looking forward to checking out Peripheral.

There's a British horror-comedy from 2009 called "Doghouse," written by Dan Schaffer and directed by Jake West. In it, a group of guys trying to help a friend deal with his divorce all go to a small village where a virus has turned every single woman into a man-eating monster. Literally. The movie's not quite the misogynistic nightmare that sounds like, but it also isn't quite smart enough to be the movie that it wanted to be, a cutting piece about the culture war between the genders. Well, it looks like Anne Hathaway's going to get a shot at trying to make the good version of the film now thanks to the news that "The Shower" is going to be made. One of the scripts from last year's Black List, written by Jac Schaeffer, "The Shower" is about a group of women who get together for a baby shower, only...

The Scribbler
Release Date: Theaters, VOD, and iTunes September 19th Written By: Dan Schaffer Directed By: John Suits Starring: Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Eliza Dushku
Man o’ man, creeps. What we have here is a lil’ independent gem that serves as one of the most original and entertaining superhero origin films I’ve seen in many a day!
But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself… ya see, at first, The Scribbler plays out like a kind of murder mystery (albeit a surreal and ultra-stylized one), as Suki (Katie Cassidy), a young girl with multiple personalities, arrives at Juniper Tower, a boarding home for recently released mental patients—all of whom have their own unique quirks (think Arkham Asylum subdivided into low-rent housing).
After Suki arrives and does a lil’ of the ol’ self-medicating (which in this case involves her eliminating individual personas from her psyche via a machine...

Despite acknowledging that The Scribbler boasts a title fitting only the wussiest superhero imaginable, this indie graphic novel adaptation somewhat holds its own against bigger Marvel/DC bullies who command the comic book genre. It’s not easy for a little fish to swim with the sharks, as even larger-budget films like The Spirit couldn’t hack it, but Dan Schaffer’s multiple story layers are able to provide enough groundwork for director John Suits to build a heavily saturated, psychotically seedy world around. There are certainly heroes and villains, but not in the way comic book movies have taught us to recognize, which is somewhat refreshing with so many spandex-clad hard-bodies running about and being all disgustingly charming – give me a cynical, conflicted hero any day of the week.

The Scribbler was originally a graphic novel by the same name by Dan Schaffer of London England. Schaffer has an interesting career starting off as a political cartoonist before moving to comics by writing and illustrating the series Dogwitch in 2000. Four years later came what Schaffer considers to be a more serious phase in his artistic direction with The Scribbler meant to illustrate the dangers of mechanical thinking in an organic world. Having not read the Gn this film was viewed with no preconceived notions or familiarity with the storyline at all.

I’m Scribbling as Fast as I Can: Suits Unsuited for Comic Book Adaptation
Within minutes of its meager running time, which opens with a disorienting barrage of monotonous narration, John Suits’ The Scribbler makes good on the asinine promise of its silly title. Starting out as producer, Suits has a trio of other direct-to-dvd quality horror titles under his belt, this time adapting a celebrated graphic novel by Dan Schaffer with a handful of notable names in the cast that would indicate some semblance of worthwhile quality, but alas, there’s nary of whiff of enjoyable screen time in this tonally awkward, amateurish handling concerning a disorder that’s been long out of pulp fiction fashion for several decades.

The Image comic book, The Scribbler, is being groomed for a film adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter says New Artist Alliance and Caliber Media are teaming up for a four-picture slate, producing films that are each budgeted at under a million dollars. The Scribbler falls into that plan.
Written by Dan Schaffer and published by Image Comics in 2006, The Scribbler will be adapted by John Suits, who last directed the upcoming Static starring Milo Ventimiglia and Sara Paxton. Suits is currently casting his latest endeavor.

I watched this film twice, hoping to find one brief moment where the filmmakers delivered more of a message than boys will be boys and women will be bitches. Yet, despite a few opportunities, that moment of salvation never arrived. While I don't think the film is misogynistic, it's obvious the script presents women as the cause of all men's problems.
The story focuses on Vince, devastated by his upcoming divorce, and his six friends who have chartered a bus to the village of Moodley. Not only do they have access to a house for the evening, but three quarters of the village's population are women. The guys hope a night of drinking and debauchery with not only cheer up Vince, but give them a break from the overbearing women in their lives.

#1- Machete
Directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-director Ethan Maniquis
It took three years, but Machete, whose fake trailer showcased before the B-picture homage Grindhouse, finally hit the cineplex. Anyone who found themselves excited by that teasing coming attraction will no doubt be satiated by the relentless onslaught of over-the-top violence, extreme gore, unnecessary nudity and cheap laughs that directors Rodriguez and Maniquis deliver in it’s full-length incarnation. Sugarcoat it with a dose of political satire and Machete is everything The Expendables should have been – self-aware, flashy and fun.
Rodriguez does a good job in updating a gritty, gory genre. His pic made-on-the-cheap mimics the grind house aesthetic right down to the choppy edits, 70′s style opening credits, the tongue and cheek use of funky soft core porn music (provided by Rodriguez’s band Chingon) and the grainy cinematography. More so the director summons influences of American Westerns and...

Shaun of the Dead set the bar high in terms of expectations from British horror comedies, and no film since has even come close to meeting those expectations. Until now, that is. With Doghouse, director Jake West (Evil Aliens) matches Edgar Wright's contemporary classic zom-com, low-brow joke for low-brow joke and severed limb for severed limb, keeping pace right up to the (non) conclusion, where it inexplicably falls completely off the rails and ultimately disappoints. The film, which had its Canadian premiere at Fantasia, is about six buddies hoping to console their recently divorced pal Vince (Stephen Graham, Snatch, Gangs of New York) by planning a wild weekend of drunken debauchery in a small village where one of them used to visit his Nan in the summer. These are your typical, everyday guys: a couple of alpha male macho men, one of whom thinks all women want him, the...

[Jake West's latest was caught by Mack at Fantastic Fest, and since it is showing up at Fantasia, take it away Mack!]
Neil [Danny Dyer] and Mikey [Noel Clarke] gather together the lads and head to Mikey's Nan's house in the remote village of Moodley to help one of their friends Vince [Stephen Graham] get over his divorce. No sooner have they arrived when they discover that all the women, only the women, have been infected with a virus that makes them man-hating and man-eating zombies. A night out with the boys turns into a night of terror in Jake West's Doghouse.
The screenplay by Dan Schaffer wastes no time setting up. In the opening minutes we already know what each of the boys is like and what they are like with the women in their lives, if they have any at all. And no sooner have they warmed up at their local pub, had a laugh and taken the piss, hired a coach, and landed in the middle of nowhere Moodley then things begin to go to hell right quick.

“Now is not the time to stop objectifying women.” This sharp line of dialogue, delivered by a character staring at a group of living dead females, is a key moment in director Jake West’s Doghouse.
Danny Dyer, Noel Clarke and Stephen Graham star as a group of blokes undergoing a tough time of it with the opposite sex. Unable to communicate or articulate themselves properly with their girlfriends and wives – and with one of the gang undergoing a messy divorce – they decide to go on a lads weekend and re-connect with their maleness. Arriving in the quiet country village of Moodley, the gang stumble upon a military-operation-gone-wrong and the female population are now a ravenous bunch of mutant zombies.
With its tongue-firmly-in-its-cheek and playful use of stereotypes, West’s third feature is a comic exploration of the battle of the sexes. In fact, the battle becomes literal. Packed full of gallows humour,...

I have to say that Fantastic Fest goers were the perfect audience to enjoy this soon to be cult classic with. Doghouse is a British zombie film that has a truly unique and funny take on the genre.
Doghouse starts out by introducing us to Vince, a divorcee who’s friends are determined to get him back on track. His friends Neil (Danny Dyer) and Mikey (Noel Clarke) come up with the idea to go to Mikey’s home town where the ratio of women to men is 4 to 1, and apparently the women are all gorgeous. They along with several more friends rent a van with a hot driver Candy (Christina Cole) and head off to this supposed heaven for single men.
When they get there, not everything is as promised. The house they’re staying at is a mess, the place is filthy and it’s in the middle of nowhere.

In twelve days, the doors will swing open on Jake West's Doghouse (to audiences in England, that is). Empire scored the first ten minutes of this horror-comedy right here . Danny Dyer (you might remember him from Severance ) leads the male ensemble cast of this film who find themselves in a village where the women are turned into cannibals thanks to a virus. West developed Doghouse with writer Dan Schaffer, the creator of the "Dogwitch" comic books.

An early trailer for Jake West’s latest horror outing, Doghouse, showed up online recently, and it’s about time you guys dug upon it, don’t you think? I do, too.
Doghouse is the story of a group of men who head out to a remote village to help a friend get past his divorce. Their timing is all fucked up, though, because shortly upon arriving, they discover that all the women of the village are afflicted with a virus that makes them flesh-eating cannibals. That’d sure make me happy to be single!
West dropped us a line to say that, while he's fine with fans getting a sampling of Doghouse, this is by no means a final trailer. "The trailer on the web is just a very quick and early teaser made up of material from the first couple of weeks of shooting," he explained. "Believe me...

Hell ya!! Now this is what I'm talking about. Many have tried to blend horror and comedy over the last couple of years but very few have succeeded in quite the same way as the Brits have; and even less have managed to do it quite as well as the team of Jake West, director of the crazy awesome over-the-top gore fest Evil Aliens, and comic book creator Dan Schaffer. I've been waiting on the trailer for Doghouse for over a year now and even though I've been checking the film's official webpage everyday, the lads at BD still beat me to it. Ah well, all's fair in love of film I say. You'll find the trailer and full synopsis after the break. And G.H., if you're out there, you're gonna love this one!
