Paul Feig was under a lot of pressure before the release of “Bridesmaids” in 2011 — and it was more than just his own career on the line.
Speaking on a panel at SXSW the night after the premiere of his new film “Another Simple Favor,” he shared that in the lead-up to the release of “Bridesmaids,” he was told his success or failure could have a significant impact on how women’s ideas would be treated in the industry moving forward. Though Feig was the director, the film was otherwise led by women: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrote the screenplay and appeared in it alongside Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper and Melissa McCarthy.
“So many female writer friends of mine were going out and pitching female-led comedies, and they all heard from the studios: ‘We have to wait and see how ‘Bridesmaids’ does,'” Feig said. “I was like,...

Yeppers, it's true! The Office reboot just confirmed its first returning star, and the excitement for the in-the-works continuation series has officially increased. Obviously, all of us fans are excited to see what's in store for the upcoming Peacock follow-up of the beloved sitcom, but let's be honest, we're all waiting to find out who from the original could be coming back.
Well, our first Dunder Mifflin alum has boarded the reboot to reprise his character: Oscar Nuñez will bring back his character Oscar Martinez. Variety notes that Oscar will not be a central character in the new series set in the same universe as all our favorite characters. Additionally, he's been part of the pilot script from the beginning and will be in the mix with the other new characters.

There’s no denying that The Office is one of the greatest sitcoms in television history. As a remake of the BBC series of the same name, the American version permeated pop culture to become a bona fide phenomenon that won five Primetime Emmy Awards over the course of its nine-season run. Now, a follow-up series for Peacock is hoping that lightning will strike twice, and its chances of success just got even better thanks to the news that The Office star Oscar Nuñez is along for the ride.
It should be noted that nothing has been officially confirmed, but according to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Nuñez is set to reprise his role of Oscar Martinez in The Paper, which comes from Office creator Greg Daniels and former Late Night with Conan O'Brien writer Michael Koman. Like its predecessor, the new series will once again be shot mockumentary style with a single camera,...

While there is nothing quite as perfect as New Girl, you need something to fill in the void. You’ve rewatched the show a thousand times, and now you want to check out something else.
There are some great comedies out there that bring the same humor and heartfelt storylines. There are comedies that had us shipping couples like crazy, and they brought up some important social topics with great comedic relief.
Not sure where to start to fill the void? Here are five shows like New Girl to watch next.

"The Office" had an impressive array of guest directors over the course of its nine-season run. J.J. Abrams, Harold Ramis, and Jon Favreau — who coincidentally was on the original shortlist of actors to play Michael Scott in "The Office" — all helmed episodes of the series. Another big-name guest director who wasn't brought on until the ninth and final season was Bryan Cranston, who oversaw the fourth episode of season 9, entitled "Work Bus." While the season itself isn't anyone's favorite stretch of the series, Cranston's episode is memorable for a very dark reason — namely, for almost killing the entire cast of the show.
The series' 180th episode overall, "Work Bus" saw the staff of Dunder Mifflin leave the office after Jim (John Krasinkski) convinces Dwight (Rainn Wilson) that the office itself is unsafe. Dwight then brings in an airport shuttle bus as a temporary workspace and the staff cram themselves...

When it comes to TV, romantic storylines have always been common, with some of the most popular fictional couples coming from network TV. While some of these iconic couples, like Ross Geller and Rachel Green (Friends), Pam Beesly and Jim Halpert (The Office), or Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big (Sex and the City), ended up together at the end of their respective series, some TV couples didn't end up being endgame.
Many TV fans are disappointed when their favorite couple does not end up together in the end. This can occur for many reasons, usually because one of the characters ends up with someone else or an actor decides to leave the show. Of the many beloved TV couples that didn't end up together but should have, some stood out more than others.

A team up between The Office stars and Green Day was not on my 2025 Bingo card, but I'm intrigued. The punk rock band known for hits like “Basket Case,” “American Idiot,” and “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” are working with two alums of NBC's most popular comedy show on an unexpected new movie. While the film has been described as a comedy, it is not related to the recently released and poorly received Australian version of the long-running show about printer and paper sales. The new film sounds much more exciting.
According to Variety, Live Nation Productions is partnering with Green Day to create a comedy film inspired by the band's crazy early days on the road, and is set to star The Office's Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey. New Years Rev is described as a coming-of-age story about three friends, who will be played by Mason Thames of The Black Phone,...

The Office remains one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, but its later seasons left many fans divided. While James Spader’s Robert California is often criticized for the show’s decline after Steve Carell’s exit, a growing number of viewers argue that the real issue was Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard.
Despite Spader’s commanding performance, Andy’s transformation into an insufferable, self-absorbed manager ultimately did more damage to the show than Robert California ever did, at least according to some fans.

Even long-time fans of Saturday Night Live and The Office have to admit that some jokes haven't aged well. SNL (soon to be 50 years old), and the U.S. The Office sitcom are both no strangers to controversial moments and jokes. When both shows collided in a special SNL sketch in 2008, the controversy was dialed to 11. Michael Schur, who wrote on SNL before writing the US Office, said he felt blindsided by the controversial sketch, and knows it hasn't aged well.
Appearing on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, Schur remembered the controversial pre-taped sketch. The episode saw Steve Carell host the beloved live-comedy show, and the episode joked about the US The Office ripping off the British version. The show's original creator, Ricky Gervais, opened the sketch, explaining how the British version was inspired by a Japanese show called The Office, before showing a "never before seen on American TV" clip.

The characters in Dunder Mifflin always managed to make us laugh. During its nine-season run, The Office‘s worst episode is rated at 6.4 on IMDb, which speaks a lot to the quality of the series. Unfortunately, that sad title goes to the 19th episode of Season 8, titled Get the Girl. It was an Andy-focused episode and Ed Helms’ character wasn’t exactly fan-favorite like Michael Scott.

In particular, the episode focused on Andy’s relationship with Erin, which didn’t sit well with many fans of the series. The Andy-Erin romance was dragged along for too long, from Season 5 to Season 9, only for Erin to end up with someone else leaving Ed Helms’ character a wreck at the end.

The Office cast members have a mini reunion in a heartwarming new image following Jenna Fischer's cancer update. First airing on NBC in 2005, the hit sitcom serves as an American remake of the British show of the same name created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Steve Carell leads The Office's cast as bumbling manager Michael Scott, with supporting cast members including John Krasinski and Rainn Wilson. Known for playing receptionist Pam Beesly in the show, Fischer revealed via social media post in October that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer but, following treatment, is now cancer-free.
Mindy Kaling, who played Kelly Kapoor in the show, now shares a new image on Instagram of her reunited with Fischer, Angela Martin actor Angela Kinsey, and Erin Hannon actor Ellie Kemper. TV shows need compelling protagonists, but some great shows end up having more interesting supporting characters. The main character is the one who advances the plot and carries the bulk of the show's drama, but this doesn't always guarantee that they will be the audience's favorite. Supporting characters have the opportunity to bring something different to the show, and they are unburdened by the need to directly impact the main plot.
Comedy shows are more likely to have supporting characters who outshine the protagonist. In drama shows, the story is usually too important, so the protagonist has to be the most interesting character or the entire show could fall flat. Comedy offers a bit more leniency, because audiences don't necessarily need to be captivated by the main character's personal journey to enjoy the humor of the show and the subplots.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Daredevil aren't two shows that are often mentioned in the same breath, but in 2019, the two Netflix shows crossed paths in a very unexpected way. The Ellie Kemper-led sitcom and the Charlie Cox-led superhero drama shared very little in common other than their New York City setting. However, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt found a way to openly acknowledge Daredevil in a very clever and meta way before the sitcom came to a natural conclusion after four seasons in 2019 and went out on a high.

If any show disproves the idea that all remakes are rubbish, it's The Office. The Steve Carrell-led comedy, which first aired in 2005, was initially met with skepticism. Critics understandably raised concerns about how American optimism would combine with the caustic cynicism of Ricky Gervais' much-loved original, and early reactions suggested that The Office would go the way of other ill-advised trans-Atlantic TV clones. 19 years later, not only has The Office stepped out of the short-lived BBC series' shadow, but that it deserves to be considered on its own terms as one of the all-time great comedy series.

He goes by many names: Michael Scott, Michael Scarn, Michael the Magic, Date Mike, Prison Mike, and even Blind Guy McSqueezy (some of the jokes have become a bit dated), but Steve Carell's lovable idiot from The Office almost had many other faces, as the show's casting director was eyeing several Oscar-caliber actors for the part. It's hard to imagine the US version of The Office without Steve Carell's Michael Scott - NBC tried to for the final two seasons and it didn't work. It's almost guaranteed that the show wouldn't have become the sitcom monolith it's now known as without him. But, in an alternate universe, The Office would have been led by some other insanely talented and insanely different actors.

With the highly-anticipated sequel to the hit mockumentary series The Office greenlit by Peacock, one producer on the original show is looking forward to whats to come. Justin Spitzer, who was a producer on The Office told Screen Rant hes excited about the new series, which is reported to be called The Paper, and will follow the lives of reporters at a declining newspaper.
I havent had anything to do with The Office reboot or spinoff or whatever theyre calling it, so all I know about it is what Ive read in the press. But Im very excited to see it! Spitzer said. I remember when I heard they were going to do an American remake of the British Office, and I thought, Theres no way anyone can do justice to the BBC original. But, then Greg Daniels pulled it off. Every fan of The Office can agree that the role of Michael Scott was perfectly cast. With Steve Carell in the role, the American remake of the British series of the same name became a major hit that earned the actor six Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Before landing on Carell, there was a lot of pressure to find the right person to play the boss of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company's Scranton branch. On the Office Ladies podcast, which is co-hosted by cast members Angela Kinsey (Angela) and Jenna Fischer (Pam), The Office casting manager Allison Jones recently spoke about the original casting choices for Michael Scott. In the very first meeting to discuss possibilities, Greg Daniels who developed the American version of The Office of NBC and the other creatives suggested Oscar winners Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Paul Giamatti. The Office was originally created in the U.K. but it was the U.S. version that stole the viewers' hearts, between many other international versions. The popular sitcom ran for nine seasons between 2005 and 2013, and the series finale also included a beloved guest appearance.
The U.S. version of The Office followed the work lives of the employees of a paper company branch and had a big ensemble cast. The main cast consisted of Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and B. J. Novak. Carell, who played Michael Scott on the sitcom left at the end of Season 7 and had a guest appearance in the finale, but recent episode of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey's Office Ladies podcast (via CinemaBlend), the two revealed Carell was hesitant about returning as Michael in the finale.

On the day of what could easily be the most important election in the history of the United States of America, feeling a bit of anxiety, regardless of who you are rooting for, is natural. Some will want to tune in to the news and watch that ticker, glued to the slightest hint of one party winning over the other, even though we may not know the results for quite some time.
Yet, some of us know ourselves better than to put that stress on ourselves. You did your part and voted, but the night of talking heads and numbers will only be a stressor you don't need; your watching won't change the results. So, why not unwind with a film that will keep your mind off the night's events? Here are a few comedies and other movies that have that balance of being entertaining enough to keep your mind...

Steve Carell's appearance in The Office's final episode wasn't just a surprise to audiences. On the latest episode of the Office Ladies podcast, hosts Jenna Fischer (who starred as Pam Beesley) and Angela Kinsey (who portrayed Angela Martin), shared details about Carell's memorable return to the series. Carell hilariously portrayed Dunder Mifflin's branch manager Michael Scott for seven seasons. He exited The Office in 2011 but famously returned for its 2013 finale. The crew acted secretly to get the Golden Globe Award-winning actor back on the show, and even some of the cast didn't know he would be featured in the finale. Kinsey was one of the people who had no idea that Carell would return, and Fischer shared:

There’s no denying that the US version of The Office has maintained its popularity, even after decades, since the show’s finale. So much so, that the series now sparks dubious talk of a reboot every other month. But while the majority of the show’s popularity was based on characters like Michael Scott, Dwight Schrute, and John Krasinski’s Jim, a few have related to characters like Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard.
Ed Helms in The Office | image: NBC
Introduced in the third season of The Office, Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard joined the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company, and immediately came off as a doofus and a jerk, rubbing his Ivy League education in people’s faces. However, although Andy outraged a number of fans, the actor behind the character was deeply pleased by his role. So much so that Helms even admitted to relating with his character and aspired to be more like him.

Sometimes, the absence of a TV character was so great that the showrunners had no option but to bring in a replacement to fill the void. There are many reasons this can happen, from actors wanting to move on before interest in the show has started to wane or even behind-the-scenes controversies that mean a vital character must be written off without warning. Occasionally, character replacements, such as the addition of Winston replacing Coach in New Girl, work out well. However, theyre often complete disasters that frustrate viewers who long for the return of the original star.
TV character replacements are different from when a part gets recast, as rather than trying to push a different actor into a previously established role, this is when a new character is created to fill the void. While they often share similarities with their predecessor, this is not always necessary, as some shows...

Michael Scott from The Office stands among the pantheon of legendary sitcom characters, alongside Rachel and Ross (Friends), George Costanza (Seinfeld), Al Bundy (Married with Children), and Ron Swanson (Parks & Rec). But he wasn't always the World's Best Boss, as director Paul Feig revealed that early ratings for the show suggested a seething hatred for the character from audiences. That is until Steve Carell flipped the entire dynamic with a single, inspired acting choice.
Appearing on the Dinner's On Me podcast, Paul Feig recalled working on the earlier seasons of The Office and the mixed audience reaction to Michael Scott's early persona. "So Steve was this huge star all of a sudden, and they had this huge star in the show that they thought wasn't working, and it wasn't working in the ratings," he began. Celebrity Wheel of Fortune has now been delayed from October 14th, 2024 until 2025. That means diehard fans will have to wait even longer to see Pat Sajak’s final spin. When it comes to the format of long-running television, there's always the possibility of a disappointing finale. With longer-running shows, audiences become so invested in the stories and characters of a TV show that an underwhelming finale can feel very upsetting after years of build-up. There are a few well-known TV shows that had infamously disappointing finales, such as Game of Thrones.
While some TV show finales were always a big event in pop culture, many of them didn't live up to expectations. However, there are many instances in which the penultimate episode, the episode before the finale, was a better watch. While these instances do not necessarily mean the finales were bad, the penultimate episodes were slightly better for fans who made it all the way to the final season.

Sitcoms are some of the best and most popular TV series out there. They're incredibly versatile shows, as any premise with a suitably funny spin can make for a great "situational comedy." One of the hallmarks of a great sitcom is the incredible characters that populate them. Having an enjoyable and likeable main cast is tantamount to making the premise work, but it goes beyond that. These shows also need a variety of other characters to bounce off of. The best shows make these characters so good, that fans will be wishing they got to see more of them.
There are absolutely tons of underrated sitcom characters. From main cast members, to reoccurring roles, to bit parts, there's a lot that exists in the world of "what could have been." Sure, there's such a thing as "too much of a good thing," but there is also such a thing as...

Very often, a fictional character gets a total hate mob whipped up against them. Sometimes it's justified take Joffrey from Game of Thrones for example, who was a psychopath and a killer but sometimes it's not. Sometimes, all the character did to get hate from fans was get in the way of a relationship or make a single bad decision.
Unfortunately, this very often has a negative impact on the person playing that character. There have been awful stories about actors coming out years later and talking about how the hate affected them as people. No matter what the character did, going after the actor is never okay.

TV show remakes can surpass originals by introducing new interpretations of characters, like in The Office and Shameless. Some remakes change the tone or setting of the original, like Dynasty moving from Denver to Atlanta and Bel-Air's grittier approach. Veep proves remakes can be successful by maintaining the satirical humor of the original, even with a different name and setting.
There are multiple TV show remakes that, in theory, shouldve been terrible but are actually absolutely great. Many of the best TV shows of all time are remakes, but the definition of remake has varied. Some remakes reuse the same concept as the original but introduce new interpretations of audiences favorite characters, like The Office, whereas others recreate the same story and personalities but with a few detail changes, such as Shameless.

Ever since Bridesmaids was released in 2011, fans have been hoping for a sequel. While director Paul Feig has been hesitant to develop a follow-up, he hasn't completely shot down the idea.
"It's funny to me... So many people think they want something," Feig told The Direct when asked about a potential second Bridesmaids film. "Sequels are so hard to get right. And the reason that movie works so well. It's outrageous and hilarious, but it's also because her character is going through this major life crisis. And she comes out the other side victorious. To do a sequel... We don't want her to have another major life crisis. So maybe it's just a big funny wedding. If a great script or a great idea came up, I think we would all jump at it, but at the same time, it's kind of a great thing to just sort of leave it alone.
