Tagline: "Stay Dry. Stay Alive." Director: Kenneth Kainz. Writers: Jannik Tai Mosholt, Christian Potalivo and Esben Toft Jacobsen. Cast: Alba August, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Lars Simonsen. "The Rain" is a science fiction thriller from Denmark. The initial series consists of eight episodes. And, this is the first Danish series for Netflix. In the series, a family struggles to cope with a virus, which is spread through water droplets. The first episode, "Stay Inside," puts the family below ground in a bunker. But, events force some of the characters back outside. The series does not really offer hyper-realism, with a brother and sister surviving in the bunker for five plus years. Still, "The Rain" is a decent apocalyptic series, partially set in the beautiful Danish countryside. The first episode begins and stays with the protagonist, Simone (Alba August). The initial scenes are very light in tone. Characters wear bright smiles and bright,...

The end of the world is pretty terrifying, no matter how it happens. In the upcoming Netflix series “The Rain,” the main culprit is a deadly downpour that wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population.
People outrunning killer weather isn’t entirely new in apocalypse stories (just ask Jake Gyllenhaal), but it looks like this show is more concerned with what happens years later, after two children who survived the initial attack venture back out into the world to find companions. Emerging from a bunker they’ve been locked in for half a decade, they eventually found people who had their own way of lasting through the killer precipitation.
After finding a small pack of other survivors, it’s clear that even though the streets and schools and supermarkets are deserted, the danger didn’t end when the deadly virus got swept away. There are guns and gangs and killer...

Based on their outstanding careers forged on international co-productions, 24 up-and-coming players in the European film industry have been selected to take part in European Film Promotion's (Efp) networking platform Producers on the Move. Now in its 15th year, Efp spotlights emerging European producers at the Cannes Film Festival from May 17-19 and helps them embark on successful cooperation with their similarly ambitious Producers on the Move colleagues from all over Europe.
The programas been financially supported by the Media Program (2007-2013) of the European Union and the participating Efp member organizations who each made a careful selection of their national participants according to specific criteria.
The schedule of Producers on the Move includes working sessions, one-to-one speed-dating meetings and various opportunities to exchange knowledge and follow up discussions on future projects. In addition, Efp will be teaming up with the European cultural channel Arte and the pan-European co-production fund Eurimages for Producers on the Move. For the first time, Eurimages has prepared a case study exclusively for Efp's program to be discussed under the direction of Eurimages Executive Director Roberto Olla.
He points out the importance of programs such as Producers on the Move:
“This is the 4th consecutive year that Eurimages is involved with this initiative which perfectly marries our objectives of encouraging co-operation between producers so as to stimulate cinematographic co-productions and of promoting their international distribution. Further to the success of the collaboration at the Cannes Festival, the Eurimages Fund has strengthened its partnership with European Film Promotion through other initiatives which also seek to unite professionals from the European film industry in order to participate in its development on an international level.”
Looking back at previous editions, Efp's programme results each year in several new trans-national co-productions and gives the producers a higher profile in Cannes. For 2013, almost all of the participants are still in contact with one another and 17 co-productions are in development.
One recent success story is the coming-of-age feature The Word, directed by Anna Kazejak and co-produced by two Producers on the Move from 2011, Lukasz Dzieciol(Opus Film, Poland) and Jesper Morthorst (Sf Film Production, Denmark). The film was released in Poland in March after its premiere at the Berlinale in the Generation sidebar.
Currently in post is Dirk Ohm - The Illusionist That Disappeared, directed by Bobbie Peers. The producer Maria Ekerhovd (Mer Film As, Norway), joined forces for this film with her Producers on the Move colleague from 2011, Gian-Piero Ringel (Neue Road Movies, Germany) and the 2010 Producers on the Move, Lizette Jonjic (Migma Film, Sweden). Norway has scheduled the release for September 2014. Ekerhovd and Ringel also worked together for two further projects: Every Thing Will Be Fine by Wim Wenders and the six episodes for Cathedrals of Culture which have been presented at this year’s Berlinale.

The following producers were selected by the Efp member organizations:

Berlinale adds 17 features to the Generation programme, aimed at children and youths, including the European premiere of a feature co-directed by Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement.
A total of 60 short and full-length films from 35 countries have been selected for the Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus competitions at the Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 6-16). They include five long and nine short animated films.
Section head Maryanne Redpath said: “This diversity transcends all limits, in content, imagery, narrative structure and rhythm. Each of these animated gems creates its own universe and is a fantastic cinematic adventure, not just for children.”
The selection includes What We Do in the Shadows, a mockumentary that follows the struggles of a group of New Zealand–based vampires to understand modern society and adapt to the ever-changing world around them. The ensemble includes Flights of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement, who co-directs alongside Taika Waititi.

Danish animator Esben Toft Jacobsen's debut feature The Great Bear made an immediate impression with a selection to the Berlinale and Twitch has been anxiously awaiting any progress on Jacobsen's sophomore effort ever since the first concept images arrived online. HollywoodNews.com: The 38th Seattle International Film Festival, the largest and most highly-attended event of its kind in the United States concluded today with the announcement of the Siff 2012 Competition Awards and Golden Space Needle Audience Awards. The 25-day Festival, which began May 17, featured over 460 films from more than 70 countries, including 65 feature premieres (24 World, 25 North American, 16 U.S.) and over 700 screenings. Additionally, Siff brought in more than 300 directors, actors and industry professionals.
“A festival’s success is dependent on two basic principles: providing a platform for filmmakers to be celebrated and connecting them to audience members that would not otherwise be aware of their remarkable stories,” said Siff Artistic Director Carl Spence. “This year a record number of filmmakers participated in person and online with virtual Q&A’s successfully expanding the conversation around the best in cinema with passionate audiences, illuminating guests and distinguished industry in attendance.”

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

Here's a fun new trailer for a new CGI animated Danish film called The Great Bear, which was directed by Esben Toft Jacobsen. I have no idea what the characters are saying, but the visuals give us a pretty solid idea of what this movie is about, and it looks like an entertaining movie.
Here's the synopsis:
Jonathan, 11, usually spends his vacations alone with his grandfather who lives on the edge of a vast forest populated by mythical animals. This year his kid sister Sophie joins him. But it's not cool to be stuck with a little sister, so he does what he can to avoid her. He succeeds entirely too well: Sophie is kidnapped by a giant, 1000-year-old bear. Now, Jonathan has to venture into the heart of the forest to confront the strange beings that dwell there and retrieve his sister.

[1] Depending on whether you consider a 45-minute film (Carsen & Gitte's Movie Madness) a short or a feature, The Great Bear is either the first or second full-length movie by Danish director Esben Toft Jacobsen. Either way, he seems to be off to an auspcious start. The new film is about an 11-year-old boy who ventures into the woods to rescue his sister from a gigantic 1,000-year-old bear. And we mean gigantic. See that massive eyeball in the image above? Yeah. That thing. Watch the trailer and read the synopsis after the jump. No worries if you don't speak Danish -- the action's not that difficult to follow. [via Twitch [2]] The animation's not quite as polished as we've come to expect from big-budget studios like Pixar, particularly when it comes to the human characters. But there are some really lovely shots of the forest setting, as well as potential for some exciting action.
