A slew of Marvel characters are heading to the small screen after MGM+, the linear network formerly known as Epix, and Amazon Prime Video ordered a suite of live-action series from Sony Pictures Television.

Spider-Man spinoff series Silk: Spider Society, which has been in the works for some time, will be the first show to emerge from the pact with The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang set as showrunner.

The deal is a culmination of a complex web of rights that meant the series will have to debut first on a linear network, in this case MGM+, which is set to be relaunched with its new name in January. MGM+ will have the first window in the U.S. and the series will then air on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service in the States. I hear Sony is in talks with Amazon to be the SVOD distributor of the high-profile package of shows, which includes multiple titles. The first, which was identified by Sony Pictures TV about a year ago and had been in development at the studio, is Silk. Lauren Moon, a writer on Sony TV’s Netflix series Atypical, wrote the TV adaptation based on the Korean-American comic book superhero, created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. Silk would mark one of the first comic book series led by an Asian-American character.

Sources close to the situation cautioned that the complex talks are still in early stages and there are major issues that need to be resolved. Some of them have to do with a complicated web of multi-platform rights for the various characters.

Beauvais is best known for roles in NYPD Blue and The Jamie Foxx Show, while Espensen hails from children's shows like Kirby Buckets and Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures. As was stated earlier, there's currently no word on who either actress will be playing in Spider-man: Homecoming, though, based on her age, it's probably a safe bet that Espensen goes to high school with Holland's Peter Parker.

Earlier this week, we showed you the first look at the official costume in Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Tom Holland spotted near what appeared to be a construction site. As is the case with most set photos, we don't get too much context of the scene we're looking at, but today we have a report that claims Tom Holland's Peter Parker may be leaving New York City in this highly-anticipated movie. If that wasn't enough, the growing cast has just added three more actors.

A report from Looper, which included the photos from earlier this week, revealed that Tom Holland was shooting two scenes that day, one being a bus scene where kids from his high school are taking a field trip to Washington D.C. Yes, the Spider-Man: Homecoming casting announcements just keep on coming. To be fair, most big tentpole movies like this feature enormous casts, it’s just that in this instance, even the most minor of supporting roles are being reported on for some reason. The latest additions, Tiffany Espensen and Garcelle Beauvais, were actually spotted in and around the set of the movie already, but Deadline has now confirmed that they’ve joined the production.

The site reckons their specific roles are still under wraps, but based on the photos we’ve seen, it’s safe to assume that Beauvais (NYPD Blue, Wild Wild West) will be playing a faculty member at Peter Parker’s high-school, while Espensen (Monsterville: The Cabinet of Souls) will be a student.

Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures follows two surfer dude friends who attend high school and get in a lot of trouble in a fictional California town called Pacific Bluffs. The cast includes Taylor Gray, Dillon Lane, Ashley Argota, Tiffany Espensen, Glenn McCuen, and George Back.

The series debuted on Nickelodeon last summer and ran for 13 episodes, until October 2011. After a five month hiatus, Bucket & Skinner returned in March but ran for just five episodes before leaving the schedule once again.

Singer Cody Simpson, at just 15 years of age, is already drawing comparisons to another young superstar, Justin Bieber. He was discovered in 2009 after his YouTube videos went viral, and released his first single in 2010. The Australian vocalist was also asked to remake the classic song "I Want Candy" by The Strangeloves as the theme song for Universal Pictures' Easter comedy Hop, which debuts on Blu-ray and DVD March 23. Cody Simpson is also showcased on the Hop Blu-ray bonus features in All Access with Cody Simpson, which follows him during his first red carpet experience at the premiere of Hop last year. I recently had the chance to speak with Cody Simpson over the phone, and here's what he had to say.

It's been a boffo weekend for Fast Five. This big budget car sequel seems to have welcomed the summer blockbuster season into the box office. It managed to crank out a spectacular $83 million. Add in international takes and it's grossed $165 million. This is particularly impressive because this surprisingly well-reviewed crowd-pleaser has managed to top the previous entry in the series which made $71 million on opening weekend.

In other news, Rich Ross of Disney is no doubt tucking his tail between his legs after his first attempt at creating a new franchise bombed big time. Prom was an utter disaster. They had predicted a $9 million opening but instead the tween film debuted to a very disappointing $5 million. It seems this won't be getting the High School Musical...

It was another winning weekend for the movie industry with box office receipts up an estimated 34% from this time last year making everyone hope the 2011 slump is over. Rain in much of the country no doubt helped encourage moviegoers to buy a ticket and stay indoors.

You can't keep a good bird down evidently. Rio was the champ for the second weekend running. It's $26.5 million haul was enough to beat out Madea's Big Happy Family that opened to a robust $26 million. However, Tyler Perry's sixth cross-dressing film performed under expectations. Many had been projecting a $30 million opening weekend but it wasn't able to pull that off. The last two movies featuring his popular Madea character had opened at $41 million and $30 million.
