When acclaimed supernatural series Les Revenants/The Returned aired on Canal+ in 2012, it emerged into a fairly barren landscape for French-language scripted TV drama. The story of a remote mountain town whose dead are mysteriously revived, its stylish, cinematic look and philosophical, grown-up approach to genre television had little precedent. While the French ‘polar’ or detective series had long been a television staple, France had almost no tradition of sci-fi, horror and fantasy TV shows – or at least, none taken seriously by its understandably cinephile-and-proud cultural gatekeepers.
In the last five years, coinciding with the global growth of scripted TV drama, that’s all changed. Crime thrillers still wear the crown, but alongside them, France and Belgium are producing and exporting more continuing television dramas and miniseries than ever. From Black Mirror-ish future-set Osmosis and consciousness-swapping Transfers, to cool Parisian teen Vampires and creepy horror Marianne, scripted French-language genre television is exploding.

Lille, France — The series the audience was about to see on Sunday night at Lille’s central Ugc Cine-Cité multiplex wasn’t even playing in Series Mania’s main International Competition.
But in many ways, Netflix’s” “Osmosis” was certainly among the most-anticipated of shows at this year’s festival. The excitement before the screening was palpable, and pointed up multiple paradoxes about France’s current TV scene.
As a service, Netflix has taken France by storm. Launching in Sept, 2014, it has run up at least 5 million household subscriptions, as many as the retail subscriber base of pay TV Canal Plus, a pillar of France’s cultural establishment, which has been in service since 1985.
Released in May 2016, Netflix’s first sortie into French Original Series, “Marseilles,” a political corruption thriller starring Gerard Depardieu, proved polemical, being lambasted by many French critics, newspaper Le Monde dismissing it famously as “cowshit”, and director Julius Berg,...

If movies and TV are any indication, the future of online dating is very bleak. The streaming service that brought you the “Hang the DJ” episode of “Black Mirror” (which ended up being surprisingly hopeful!) is back with a story about how science and true love maybe weren’t meant to be mixed at all. The French series “Osmosis,” which premieres next month on Netflix, follows a group of participants in a new dating service that uses brainwaves to guarantee finding a soulmate. Some are eager participants, while others remain a little skeptical that a pill and a spot of time in a hallucination dome can bring about magical true love. But, as these things tend to do, it looks like the people in this trial end up giving a little bit more than their personal data when this effort starts to fall apart.

As part of its inaugural television festival, Canneseries launches its first official competition April 7, in which 10 series from nine countries will compete for awards in five categories: best series, performance, special performance, screenplay and music.
“The idea is to show how high-quality TV series have become and introduce shows that aren’t necessarily selling outside of their home territory,” says Albin Lewi, artistic director for Canneseries. “Things are changing. We see that people accept content that is not in their own language. It’s a good moment to show the diversity of television.”
The jury will be headed by American author and screenwriter Harlan Coben, who will preside over a panel consisting of German actress Paula Beer, French director and screenwriter Audrey Fouché, Turkish actress Melisa Sözen, Chilean-Canadian composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer and “The Wire” actor Michael Kenneth Williams.

Television is staking more ground in Cannes, and Harlan Coben thinks it’s about time. The author and creator behind Netflix’s upcoming “Safe” returns to the Croisette this weekend to head up the jury at Canneseries, a new TV festival competition taking place along side the annual MipTV market.
“Now that we’re in the golden age of television, I think it’s long overdue,” Coben told IndieWire. “I think everyone now is chomping at the bit for it. I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to walking around the convention hall, and looking at all the variety of TV that’s around, and the new perspectives. South Korea, Mexico, Israel — I really look forward to seeing what they’re doing with storytelling, because it’s just going to be different.”

Back in February, Ioncinema.com reported on the completion of an upcoming Canada-France production starring Déborah François, Hiroshi Abe, and Hidetoshi Nishijima called Memories Corner. Apparently news travels slow, because the project is just now beginning to get some coverage in Japan.
François plays a reporter who travels to Kobe in order to cover the memorial ceremonies being held for the 10th anniversary of the Great Hanshin earthquake. While interviewing the locals, she discovers that although the passage of time has healed the city, the traumatic events of that day still cast a large shadow. Full plot details are still yet to be revealed, but Abe is said to play a man who falls in love with François’s character. Nishijima, who recently had to study Thai for his role in “Sayonara Itsuka”, once again had to go multilingual to play her interpreter.
