Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. and Canada distribution rights to Come Closer, which is Israel’s submission to the Best International Feature Oscar race.

From director Tom Nesher and based loosely on incidents from her own life, the film recounts the sometimes twisted, sometimes comic and surprising aftermath that followed her young brother’s death. Nesher, daughter of renowned Israeli director Avi Nesher, took inspiration for the storyline from Ari Nesher, who was killed in a 2018 hit-and-run accident at age 17.

In the film, the only person Eden (Lia Elalouf) has ever really loved is her teenage brother, Nati. There are no secrets between them – or so Eden believes. When Nati is killed in a car accident, Eden discovers he had a secret girlfriend named Maya (Darya Rosenn). Eden embarks on a clandestine investigation, stalking Maya, befriending her and ultimately developing an obsession that pulls Maya into her own life,...

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to Copa 71, a documentary about the pioneering “Unofficial Women’s World Cup” that created a sensation in 1971 but has since been virtually erased from history. Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine (Billie) directed the film, which is executive produced by tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams and soccer star Alex Morgan.

Greenwich plans a summer theatrical release of the documentary, a co-production of New Black Films, Dogwoof, and Westbrook Studios.

“In August 1971, soccer teams from England, Argentina, Mexico, France, Denmark, and Italy gathered at Mexico City’s sun-drenched Azteca Stadium,” notes a synopsis of the film. “The scale of the tournament was monumental: lavish sponsorship, extensive TV coverage, merchandise on every street corner, and crowds of over 100,000 roaring fans turn this historic stadium into a cauldron of noise match after match.”

The synopsis continues, “A fawning media treat the players like rock stars.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to music-themed documentary The Elephant 6 Recording Co., setting an August 25 theatrical release date for the directorial debut of C.B. Stockfleth.

The film, an inside look at the influential underground music movement, premiered at Doc NYC last November and held its international premiere at Cph:dox in Copenhagen in March.

“In 1985, a group of Louisiana high schoolers began experimenting with whatever random instruments and gear they could find,” a description of the documentary notes. “This core group became the basis for a loose music collective that became known as the Elephant 6 Recording Co. and comprised bands Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, Elf Power and many others. Influenced by psychedelic pop of the Beatles and the Beach Boys and a lo-fi DIY approach, the bands that coalesced around the Elephant 6 banner epitomized for many alternative and indie rock of the ‘90’s.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Jennifer Peedom’s visually stunning documentary River, “a profound cinematic and musical reflection on how rivers have shaped both the planet’s elaborate landscapes and all human existence.”

Greenwich plans to release the film in theaters on April 21, ahead of Earth Day on April 22. River is a sequel to Peedom’s 2017 documentary Mountain – also a Greenwich release – and reunites the director with her creative collaborators on that earlier film, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, narrator Willem Dafoe and writer Robert Macfarlane.

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up all rights excluding TV to the documentary Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV, directed and produced by Amanda Kim, which world premiered in U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

The film will launch its U.S. theatrical release at New York’s Film Form on March 24, being distributed in Canada by Films We Like starting on the same date, ahead of its U.S. broadcast premiere on PBS’ American Masters. Dogwoof acquired UK distribution rights and international sales rights outside of Korea in early January, with a distribution deal and streaming partner for the latter territory to be announced shortly.

The doc tells the story of Nam June Paik, a pillar of the American avant-garde in the 20th century, widely regarded as “The George Washington of Video Art,” who coined the phrase “Electronic Superhighway,” and is arguably the most famous Korean artist in modern history.

The Story of Film: A New Generation opens at two dozen theaters this weekend — Laemmle Royal in LA, Museum of the Moving Image in NY, Music Box Theatre in Chicago and Brattle in Cambridge. It’s a mix of arthouses, cinematheques, museums and even a few multiplexes for Mark Cousins’ follow-up to his 15-hour, 2011 opus The Story Of Film: An Odyssey. (This one clocks a relatively brief three hours.)

Several theaters are programming repertory series with the release, “which we feel will elevate its profile and continue the conversation,” said Kyle Westphal, head of theatrical sales for Music Box Films, the distributor for both installments.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to the edge-of-your-seat documentary thriller Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche, a “gripping account of the deadliest avalanche in U.S. ski resort history.”

Greenwich plans to release the documentary — winner of the Audience Award at Telluride’s Moutainfilm festival – in theaters in New York, San Francisco and Northern California on September 23, expanding to additional markets thereafter. A 45-day exclusive theatrical window will be followed by a release on Tvod/Est (transactional video on demand/electronic sell-through) and DVD on November 8.

Independent film distributor Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to documentary feature “Hockeyland.”

Directed by Tommy Haines (“Saving Brinton”), the film follows rival high school hockey teams in Minnesota’s North Country, one of the breeding grounds for hockey greats who go onto to collegiate and professional play, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Fast on-ice action is paired with an observational approach to examine two communities and their teen heroes through debilitating injuries, off-ice troubles, family health concerns, and the expectations of being a future star in the NHL.

“Hockeyland” is produced by Tommy Haines, Andrew Sherburne, and J.T. Haines, executive produced by Carson Kipfer and is a production of Northland Films, a Midwest-based nonfiction film company. Laure Calamy, who plays Noémie, the wacky assistant to Mathias Barneville in Call My Agent!, won the César (French equivalent of the Oscars) for Best Actress for My Donkey, My Lover & I, the film by Caroline Vignal that opens this weekend Stateside from Greenwich Entertainment. It’s the distributor’s second narrative film in a year and its widest release since The Rescue.

Wide here means 52 screens in 28 markets in the U.S. where the specialty box office can still be pretty punishing, especially for foreign language fare. Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to Christophe Cognet’s “From Where They Stood,” a searing WW2-set documentary which premiered at the Berlinale.

Represented in international markets by MK2 Films, “From Where They Stood” went on the win the Spirit of Freedom Award for best documentary at last year’s Jerusalem Film Festival.

Produced by Raphaël Pillosio, “From Where They Stood” retraces the footsteps of a handful of prisoners in Nazi concentration camps who managed to take clandestine photographs of the hell the Nazis were hiding from the world. These photos were either smuggled out or hidden and retrieved after the war.

New York-based distributor Greenwich Entertainment and Rialto Distribution have teamed up to picked up U.S. rights to Caroline Vignal’s “My Donkey, My Lover & I,” a heartwarming French romantic comedy headlined by “Call My Agent” breakout star Laure Calamy.

The company was co-created by Ed Arentz, co-founder and former managing director of Music Box Films, and Edmondo Schwartz, co-founder of Cohen Media Group, in September 2017 with the goal of handling high-end theatrical movies.

Sold by Playtime, “My Donkey, My Lover & I” was part of Cannes 2020’s official selection and went on to be nominated for eight César Awards, earning best actress for Calamy. The film was previously acquired by top distributors in key markets and played particularly well in English-speaking markets, including in the U.K. for Curzon and in Australia/New Zealand for Palace.

The Rescue, an arresting truth-is-stranger-than-fiction story of a Thai youth soccer team trapped in a remote flooded cave system opens on five screens in NY/LA/Chicago this weekend in a specialty market waiting “for audiences to wake up and see that they’re missing out,” according to Ed Arentz, co-president of the doc’s distributor Greenwich Entertainment. And sooner rather than later — he’s counting on strong word of mouth to expand to 350-400 screeens next weekend.

A triumph at Telluride and Toronto, The Rescue has the reach of National Geographic (it’s a Nat Geo film) and pedigreed filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the husband and wife team who won a Best Documentary Film Oscar for Free Solo in 2019.

That film followed a professional rock climber attempting the first free solo ascent of the famed El Capitan’s 900-meter vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment said Thursday that it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Keyboard Fantasies: The Beverly Glenn-Copeland Story, a documentary about the New Age electronica musician directed by Posy Dixon. A theatrical release is planned for October timed to the release of Copeland’s Keyboard Fantasies Reimagined album, and a current exhibit at the Guggenheim.

Copeland released a pair of folk and blues albums in the 1970s before segueing to a career in Canadian children’s TV, and writing songs for Sesame Street. It was in the 1980s when Copeland began playing with computer-generated sounds. The result is the 1986 album Keyboard Fantasies, now considered groundbreaking in the genre especially after it was lifted up by collectors and got a 2016 rerelease.

In the pic, a Luca production produced by Liv Proctor, Dixon connected with the musician, now living as Glenn Copeland, and began to document his history and emergence into the independent music scene.

Greenwich Entertainment has landed North American distribution rights to Savior for Sale: da Vinci’s Lost Masterpiece?, a documentary about the controversy surrounding the most expensive artwork ever sold.

Antoine Vitkine directed the film about the Salvator Mundi, a portrait of Christ as “Savior of the world” that Leonardo da Vinci painted more than 500 years ago. For hundreds of years the painting’s whereabouts remained a mystery, but in 2005 the lost masterpiece suddenly resurfaced at an auction in New Orleans. Or so some art historians, speculators and other interested parties asserted.

Savior for Sale documents the twists and turns of the story, which involved a painstaking restoration and vigorous disputes over whether the painting on wood panel was indeed made by da Vinci, or partially painted by him, or by one or more of his students. Exclusive: Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club is coming to audiences in North America.

Greenwich Entertainment has acquired distribution rights to Ronnie’s, directed by Oliver Murray and produced by Goldfinch Entertainment, and will release the feature film early next year.

It comes after the doc premiered at Doc NYC last year and follows a UK theatrical run.

Ronnie’s chronicles the life of saxophonist Ronnie Scott, a poor, Jewish kid growing up in 1940s East End, London who became owner of the Soho, London night club. Musicians who have played the club include Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Nina Simone, Van Morrison, Chet Baker, and Jimi Hendrix, who played there the night of his death.

The docu, which marks the directorial debut feature from Max Basch and Malia Scharf, made its world premiere last year at SXSW. Made over 11 years, the docu takes a look at the life of artist Kenny Scharf and features interviews and rare archival footage with Scharf, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Ed Ruscha, Dennis Hopper, Yoko Ono, Kaws, Marilyn Minter, and Jeffrey Deitch.

When Scharf arrived in New York City in the early 1980s, he quickly befriended Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. This trio changed the face of the art world with their works. While Basquiat and Haring both died tragically young, Scharf lived through cataclysmic shifts in New York City and the art world.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights All About Sex, the first directorial feature for up-and-comer Dakota Gorman, who wrote the comedy, which is loosely based on her own experiences battling depression and the general anxieties that accompany aging youth. Gorman also stars alongside Natalee Linez, Emma Deckers, Dillon Lane, Matt Angel and Chris Costanzo.

The generational film follows the lives of three mid-20’s friends — Sage (Gorman), Casey (Linez), and Morgan (Deckers)– caught in the grip of quarter-life crises as they meander through the messy, embarrassing and confusing pitfalls that come with “adulting”.

The film premiered in Venice Days and was also selected for Toronto. It follows a Hungarian neurosurgeon, who after 20 years in the United States, returns to Budapest for a romantic rendezvous with a fellow doctor she met at a conference. When the love of her life is nowhere to be seen, she tracks him down only to have the bewildered man claim the two have never met.

Greenwich is lining up the U.S. release for January 22. It is likely to be a combination of theatrical and virtual cinema.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has picked up North American distribution rights to comedy feature Days of The Bagnold Summer, the directorial debut of The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird.

Bird’s film, starring Earl Cave (True History Of The Kelly Gang), Monica Dolan (Pride) and Rob Brydon (The Trip), premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and will open stateside in theaters, virtual cinemas, and on demand from February 19, 2021.

The movie charts the wobbly relationship between well-intentioned single librarian Sue Bagnold and her black-clad teenage son Daniel, who’d rather listen to Metallica than his mother. Daniel was meant to spend the summer in Florida visiting his dad, but is now stuck with mom following the trip’s cancellation.

With a soundtrack by indie band Belle & Sebastian, the film is based on the graphic novel by Joff Winterhart with a screenplay written by Lisa Owens.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has picked up the North American distribution rights to Eytan Fox’s Israeli drama Sublet with a plan to release the movie in 2021.

The deal was negotiated by Greenwich’s Ed Arentz and UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.

The movie, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, stars Tony Award-winning and Emmy-nominated John Benjamin Hickey and features the debut of Niv Nissim. Sublet focuses on a New York Times writer (Hickey) who visits Tel Aviv after suffering a tragedy. The city’s energy and his relationship with a younger man he meets there (Nissim) bring him back to life.

CNN Films acquired the Na broadcast rights to the film earlier this month. It was supposed to be the opening night film at the Tribeca Film Festival in April before the coronavirus pandemic shut down festivals. It closed out the AFI Docs Festival last week.

The film chronicles the role of popular music in propelling the relatively unknown candidate from Georgia to the White House, and the significant role music has played in Carter’s life and work. The documentary, which heralds from director Mary Wharton, producer Chris Farrell, and writer Bill Flanagan, closed the recent AFI Docs Fest (where Carter sent his virtual congratulations), after originally being scheduled to open Tribeca. Makers, the Verizon Media brand revolving around women, unveiled its latest PBS title Not Done, a documentary that expands on the pubcaster’s documentary series Makers: Women Who Make America. The news came Tuesday during the sixth annual Makers Conference, now underway at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

Not Done will air June 30 at 8 Pm on PBS timed to the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Sara Wolitzky directed the hourlong doc, produced by Alexandra Moss and executive produced by Makers founder Dyllan McGee.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired domestic rights to Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind, the feature documentary written, directed and produced by Martha Kehoe and Joan Tosoni. A May theatrical release is in the works for the pic, which premiered at HotDocs last spring.

The feature from Insight, which produced in association with Canada’s CBC, explores the career, music and influence of Gordon Lightfoot, who went from rural Ontario choirboy to international star with such folk-pop hits in the 1960s and ’70s as “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” “Carefree Highway,” “Rainy Day People” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Lightfoot received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, Canada’s highest honor in the performing arts, in 1997. Now 81, he still tours.

John Brunton, John Murray, and Allan and Gary Slaight are executive producers.

“Gordon Lightfoot is one of the essential singer-songwriters,” Greenwich’s Ed Arentz said.

Writer-director Yaron Zilberman’s (A Late Quartet) Toronto title chronicles the year leading up to the assassination of Israel’s prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. Set against the backdrop of Rabin’s efforts to end the Israeli-Palestian conflict, the film is told through the journey of the assassin, Yigal Amir.

The film examines all the forces that acted on him, from his personal quest to become a hero in the eyes of his peers, and the rejection he faces from his love interest, to the intense incitement of politicians and religious leaders.

Disney-Fox’s “Ford v Ferrari,” starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, is heading for a North American launch in the $23 million to $27 million range, early estimates showed Thursday.

“Ford v Ferrari” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released by Disney on Nov. 15. Critics have been impressed with a current 88% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Adam Bolt’s Human Nature, the feature documentary that premiered at this year’s SXSW and was just nominated for a pair of Ida Documentary Awards. The deal comes as the film screens next month at Doc NYC ahead of a February 7, 2020 theatrical release.

Human Nature, the directorial debut of Bolt, is about the gene-editing breakthrough Crispr, which at its essence provides unprecedented control over the basic building blocks of life, opening the door to curing diseases, reshaping the biosphere, and designing our own children. The doc explores the biotech innovation’s implications via the scientists who discovered it, the families it’s affecting, and the bioengineers testing its limits.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to documentary Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy. The feature directorial debut of Elizabeth Carroll puts the spotlight on the titular celebrated chef of Mexican cuisine. In honor of Mexican culture and Cinco de Mayo, Nothing Fancy will open in theaters in May.

The film made its premiere at SXSW in March and includes interviews with Kennedy as well as famed chefs José Andrés, Gabriela Camara and Alice Waters. Kennedy authored nine cookbooks and has spent nearly seventy years exploring Mexico researching the country’s varied and complex cuisines. Greenwich Entertainment has set a release date for Alex Gibney’s critically acclaimed documentary Citizen K, which will put it in the running for this year’s Oscar race. The feature will be released in Los Angeles on November 22 and will expand to other cities in early 2020. Greenwich Entertainment has acquired the domestic distribution rights to “Deerskin,” a comedy starring Jean Dujardin from director Quentin Dupieux, the company announced Thursday.

“Deerskin” first played at the Director’s Fortnight section in Cannes earlier this year, and it’s making its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next week. It will also have a U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month, and Greenwich plans a theatrical release for the film beginning in 2020.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to The Times of Bill Cunningham, a documentary about the famed street and fashion photographer that is narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker. The Mark Bozek-directed film, which premiered at last year’s New York Film Festival, will now hit theaters in February 2020.

The movie features photographs chosen from more than 3 million previously unpublicized images and is told in Cunningham’s own words, culled from an unearthed 1994 interview, about a life that included living in France during the Korean War, his unique relationship with Jackie Kennedy and his four decades at the New York Times.

Cunningham was also the subject of the 2010 documentary Bill Cunningham: New York, directed by Richard Press.

“There are not many people whose lives and personality can sustain two very different but both thoroughly compelling documentaries,” said Greenwich’s Ed Arentz. “Bill Cunningham is one of those rare individuals.

Greenwich Entertainment and 1091 have acquired the North American rights to the rock documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” and plan to release the film in theaters this September, the companies announced Monday.

CNN Films, who also produced co-financed the documentary with Pch Films, has also acquired the North American broadcast TV rights for North America.

“The Sound of My Voice” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and also won an audience award for documentaries at the Provincetown International Film Festival.

The film includes archival footage spanning 50 years, following her from the start of her career in the 1960s through becoming the highest paid female rock and roll performer in the ’70s, all culminating in her retirement in 2011 due to her battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Greenwich Entertainment and 1091 have co-acquired the North American distribution rights to the documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.”

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman directed the movie with James Keach, Michele Farinola and CNN Films producing. The film was co-financed by Pch Films and CNN Films. CNN Films has acquired broadcast television rights for North America. A September theatrical release is planned.

The film premiered to glowing reviews at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and recently won the Documentary Audience Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival.

Andrew Slater’s music documentary Echo In The Canyon opened with a bang in two Los Angeles theaters over the Memorial holiday weekend, crooning out the second-highest opening weekend per theater average of 2019, solidifying further non-fiction as the star genre among the specialties so far this year.

The Greenwich Entertainment release grossed a three-day estimate of $103,716 from its showings at the ArcLight Hollywood and The Landmark in West L.A., giving the title a $51,858 PTA. The year’s top debut average remains with Avengers: Endgame at $76,601 in over forty-six hundred theaters. It is also the best PTA for a doc this year.
