I don’t know about you guys, but I never get enough of historical fiction dramas and epic action series and films. Not only do they present us with specific depictions and reimaginings of key moments throughout history, but they also introduce us to the fascinating people—real and imagined—who endured such brutal times. As of late, we’ve seen a heavy focus on a couple of my favorite historical topics, Ancient Rome and gladiators. No film or series has better focused on and depicted gladiatorial life like Starz hit franchise Spartacus, which is set to return later this year with a new installment. Here’s a peek at how Spartacus: House of Ashur is reimagining the franchise’s story.

On Wednesday, January 15, Starz released the first-look teaser trailer for “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a sequel to its original three-season “Spartacus” series, which started in 2010 with “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” continued with “Spartacus: Vengeance,” and concluded in 2013 with “Spartacus: War of the Damned.” Between “Blood and Sand” and “Vengeance,” Starz made a six-episode miniseries “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.”

(Spartacus, by the way, is a real historical figure. He was a Thracian gladiator and one of the escaped slaves who led an uprising against the Roman Republic in the early first century BC. Andy Whitfield played Spartacus for the first season and provided a brief voiceover for its prequel. At the time, he was battling stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Whitfield died in 2011; Liam McIntyre took over the role in Seasons 2 and 3. Kirk Douglas famously played Spartacus in Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film.)

Dan Hamill, Andrew McFarlane, Jackson Gallagher, Jaime Slater, Simon Arblaster, Arlo Gibson, Cameron Rhodes, Evander Brown, Graham Vincent, Louis Hunter, and Donald Ross are joining the previously announced Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, Jamaica Vaughan, Ivana Baquero, Jordi Webber, Claudia Black, India Shaw-Smith, Leigh Gill, and returning Nick Tarabay. Ashur’s world just got a little more full: The Spartacus sequel series House of Ashur has added eight new cast members, including Outlander’s Graham McTavish, Starz announced Thursday.

McTavish will play Korris, a former gladiator who won his freedom in the arena and is now Ashur’s Doctore, training the gladiators in Ashur’s ludu.

Created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is now available to watch in its entirety, as all eight episodes have been released through the Netflix streaming service. And director Vincenzo Natali would like you to know that there is a black and white version of his episode Graveyard Rats on there as well. You just have to go searching for it a little bit.

Natali took to Twitter to inform us, “A reminder: Graveyard Rats is available in glorious Black & White in the ‘Trailers & More’ section of the Netflix Cabinet of Curiosities menu. I like the color version but this is the way I intended it to be viewed. Colin Hoult’s cinematography is gorgeous.“

The Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities episode "Dreams in the Witch House" brings together a talented cast to bring to live a classic H. P. Lovecraft short story. "Dreams in the Witch House" tells the unnerving story of Walter Gilman's desperate attempts to resurrect his long-lost sister and the sinister supernatural fores that they unleash. The episode's cast brings together familiar faces, as well as lesser known actors.

Like the other episodes in Cabinet of Curiosities, "Dreams in the Witch House" is a stand-alone short story. Del Toro appears in the opening to introduce the story, but the episode was directed by Twilight helmer Catherine Hardwicke, with a script by Mika Watkins loosely based on the tale by influential early 20th-century horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, who also inspired the TV series Lovecraft Country and numerous film adaptations.

The premiere of “Jupiter’s Legacy” ends exactly as expected: with a climactic battle between our newly introduced heroes and a seemingly unstoppable supervillain. Set high on a grassy hilltop safely away from innocent bystanders, dozens of caped crusaders use their respective powers to put down a raging behemoth baddie by the name of Blackstar (Tyler Mane). Lady Liberty (Leslie Bibb) tries flying at him really fast and ends up grounded, face first. The Flare (Tenika Davis) shoots fireballs that do less damage than a water balloon, and Tectonic (Stephen Oyoung) erupts the Earth under Blackstar’s feet, amounting to little more than a detoxifying mud-bath.

When costume designer Lizz Wolf was tasked with creating the superhero outfits for the new series “Jupiter’s Legacy,” based on the comic books by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, she understood the Herculean task that lay ahead of her. What she didn’t realize was how sneaker technology would be integral to her work.

Flying onto Netflix May 7, the series follows two generations of superheroes as the first passes the torch to the next. Spanning timelines but largely set in the present day, the action considers the younger heroes’ struggle to reconcile their identities and their legacy.

Wolf was one of the first crew members tapped by executive producer Steven S. DeKnight, who had helped get Marvel’s “Daredevil” off the ground. “He and Netflix saw the value in trying to develop this world, and I was brought in to build this cinematic universe from the ground up,” Wolf says.
