I don’t know about you guys, but I never get enough of historical fiction dramas and epic action series and films. Not only do they present us with specific depictions and reimaginings of key moments throughout history, but they also introduce us to the fascinating people—real and imagined—who endured such brutal times. As of late, we’ve seen a heavy focus on a couple of my favorite historical topics, Ancient Rome and gladiators. No film or series has better focused on and depicted gladiatorial life like Starz hit franchise Spartacus, which is set to return later this year with a new installment. Here’s a peek at how Spartacus: House of Ashur is reimagining the franchise’s story.
We first met Ashur in the series premiere, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. He was not a popular character. As a gladiator-turned-assassin for the House of Batiatus, he was villainous and resentful,...

More than 10 years after the last installment of Spartacus aired, House of Ashur marks the return of Starz’ hit series. The teaser promises the same degree of stylized action, drama, and character complexity that previous iterations of the franchise have boasted.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be centered around Ashur, played by Nick Tarabay. Those with a keen memory may remember that in the 2012 series finale of Spartacus: Vengeance, Tarabay’s character died, but Starz explains his return as follows: "The series poses the question: what if Ashur, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion?"

“Spartacus” is back — just without a Spartacus.
On Wednesday, January 15, Starz released the first-look teaser trailer for “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a sequel to its original three-season “Spartacus” series, which started in 2010 with “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” continued with “Spartacus: Vengeance,” and concluded in 2013 with “Spartacus: War of the Damned.” Between “Blood and Sand” and “Vengeance,” Starz made a six-episode miniseries “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.”
(Spartacus, by the way, is a real historical figure. He was a Thracian gladiator and one of the escaped slaves who led an uprising against the Roman Republic in the early first century BC. Andy Whitfield played Spartacus for the first season and provided a brief voiceover for its prequel. At the time, he was battling stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Whitfield died in 2011; Liam McIntyre took over the role in Seasons 2 and 3. Kirk Douglas famously played Spartacus in Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film.)

Exclusive: Starz’s return to the Spartacus universe with House of Ashur poses the question: What if Ashur (Nick Tarabay) hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance and instead was gifted Batiatus’s Ludus in return for helping to kill Spartacus and end the slave rebellion?
The answer will arrive in the premiere episode via Og Queen Bee Lucretia, as Lucy Lawless sets her return in a guest-starring role “elevating” all that’s around her. Her appearance will be instrumental in setting up the “what if” alternate timeline.
In addition to Tarabay, the series will also star Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, Jamaica Vaughan, Ivana Baquero, Jordi Webber, Claudia Black, India Shaw-Smith and Leigh Gill.
Spartacus creator, writer and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight returns to the franchise he helped create as showrunner and executive producer of Spartacus: House of Asher, a new original series Starz describes as a “history-bending,...

Spartacus: House of Ashur is a new spin-off series exploring an alternate timeline of the original show. The new series assumes Ashur didn't die in season two of the original series, leading to an all-new storyline. Nick Tarabay reprises the role of Ashur, and new cast members include Graham McTavish and Ivana Baquero.
The Starz series Spartacus is getting a new life, but not the way fans might expect. Spartacus: House of Ashur, now in production in New Zealand, is not a revival or a reboot. Original series creator Steven S. DeKnight is taking an "alternate universe" approach, applying Marvel's "What If?" formula to an original character to create a whole new series, and Starz has now announced the cast that will bring it to life.
According to a report by Deadline, Nick Tarabay will reprise the role of Ashur, who died in the second season finale. The new series...

Warning! Spoilers for Cabinet of Curiosities episode 6, "Dreams in the Witch House"
The Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities episode "Dreams in the Witch House" brings together a talented cast to bring to live a classic H. P. Lovecraft short story. "Dreams in the Witch House" tells the unnerving story of Walter Gilman's desperate attempts to resurrect his long-lost sister and the sinister supernatural fores that they unleash. The episode's cast brings together familiar faces, as well as lesser known actors.
Like the other episodes in Cabinet of Curiosities, "Dreams in the Witch House" is a stand-alone short story. Del Toro appears in the opening to introduce the story, but the episode was directed by Twilight helmer Catherine Hardwicke, with a script by Mika Watkins loosely based on the tale by influential early 20th-century horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, who also inspired the TV series Lovecraft Country and numerous film adaptations.

Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.
In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...

Thanks to Mike Flanagan, I've come to associate the annual spooky season with the arrival of his latest Netflix horror series, starting with "The Haunting of Hill House" in 2018 and carrying on to "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and "Midnight Mass." That trend will continue in 2022 with "The Midnight Club," but it's far from the only Halloween treat from the streamer this year. There's also "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," a horror anthology show uniting the talents of the "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker with those of many other revered horror storytellers.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains light spoilers for “Jupiter’s Legacy,” but really just the end of the first episode.]
When Paragon smashed in Blackstar’s brain, he broke my brain, too.
The premiere of “Jupiter’s Legacy” ends exactly as expected: with a climactic battle between our newly introduced heroes and a seemingly unstoppable supervillain. Set high on a grassy hilltop safely away from innocent bystanders, dozens of caped crusaders use their respective powers to put down a raging behemoth baddie by the name of Blackstar (Tyler Mane). Lady Liberty (Leslie Bibb) tries flying at him really fast and ends up grounded, face first. The Flare (Tenika Davis) shoots fireballs that do less damage than a water balloon, and Tectonic (Stephen Oyoung) erupts the Earth under Blackstar’s feet, amounting to little more than a detoxifying mud-bath.
The scene serves as both a battle royale and a short-hand introduction to each hero’s abilities, but any grasp on...

When costume designer Lizz Wolf was tasked with creating the superhero outfits for the new series “Jupiter’s Legacy,” based on the comic books by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, she understood the Herculean task that lay ahead of her. What she didn’t realize was how sneaker technology would be integral to her work.
Flying onto Netflix May 7, the series follows two generations of superheroes as the first passes the torch to the next. Spanning timelines but largely set in the present day, the action considers the younger heroes’ struggle to reconcile their identities and their legacy.
Wolf was one of the first crew members tapped by executive producer Steven S. DeKnight, who had helped get Marvel’s “Daredevil” off the ground. “He and Netflix saw the value in trying to develop this world, and I was brought in to build this cinematic universe from the ground up,” Wolf says.
