It is limiting horror movies to only carrying a social or thematic message. Sometimes these films can simply exist as visceral showcases. Horror movies can showcase human craftsmanship in practical effects, gore, special effects, etc., eliciting immediate reactions from the audience that have also become one of the genre’s trademarks.
To that end, “Abruptio” by Evan Marlowe is a marvelous work of craftsmanship. The entire film is done via puppetry, with a mix of live puppetry and life-size puppet work. There might also have been actors wearing puppet masks to maintain continuity in a film doubling down on its discontinuous sensibilities.
A middle-aged man, living with his parents, stuck in a dead-end job, and having broken up with his girlfriend of two years, gets a text message revealing that a bomb is stuck in his neck. If he doesn’t want to be blown up, he would have to...

The recently resurrected Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a trio of new indie horror films on Blu-ray and DVD on December 10: Crust, Cursed in Baja, and Abruptio.
Character actor Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) makes his feature directorial debut on Crust, an offbeat horror-comedy about a sock monster that he co-wrote with Jim Wald.
Whalen stars with Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).
In Crust, “Vegas Winters is a former child star who owns a laundromat. If you’ve heard anything at all about the film Abruptio, it’s most likely been positive, and you’ve probably wondered why you can’t find it in a theater or streaming. All of that is changing, which is a very good thing if you’re a fan of unique horror movies.
Released in 2023, Abruptio played at 37 international festivals, winning 21 awards along the way. I was lucky enough to receive a screener at that time, and I absolutely loved it. But, don’t take just my word for it. My colleague Brian Fanelli recently had the opportunity to watch Abruptio and he also gave it an extremely positive review.
Abruptio opened in select theaters on September 27, and will continue its run through at least mid-October. Hopefully, it will expand into even more theaters, because it’s a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Brittany Snow is opening up about one of the “hardest mental health challenges” she has faced in the past year and how she has relied on her friends for support.
Although Snow doesn’t reveal too many details, the American Dreams alum filed for divorce in January of this year from husband of two years Tyler Stanaland. The couple had announced they were separated four months prior amid drama stemming from the Netflix reality series Selling the Oc.
“In the past year I went through probably the hardest mental health challenge I’ve ever faced. In one day, in a matter of hours, my life turned completely upside down,” Snow told Bustle. “I was blindsided and every thing I thought I knew, held sacred and truly trusted in my life was completely different.”
Snow continued, “A couple days later my grandmother passed away and I think every thing I knew about mental health was tested.

Lilly (Hana Mae Lee) is one of Pitch Perfect’s most intriguing characters, partially for her defining characteristic of speaking her lines very quietly. Especially in Lilly’s case, some of Pitch Perfect’s best comedic moments are due to their layers of humor, in which her quiet speaking voice and how no one can hear what she says is only the surface level of the joke. But the second part of the joke is the utterly bizarre things that Lilly says. The original film never resolved or explained why Lilly is this way, nor did it need to, but the latest Pitch Perfect movie explained some of the strangest eccentricities of Lilly’s character.
The original film tells the story of a college student named Bella (Anna Kendrick) who’s cajoled into joining her university’s all-female a cappella group. Once there, she meets Pitch Perfect's cast of...

"I just need to stay alive long enough to figure this out..." A promo trailer has debuted for a very strange indie film titled Abruptio, made by a filmmaker named Evan Marlowe. After years in production, Abruptio finally had its world premiered at the Santa Monica Film Festival in January. It is now screening virtually at Cinejoy this month, before stopping by a few other genre festivals this year. No release date is set. Check out the new trailer for Habit starring Bella Thorne, Paris Jackson and Gavin Rossdale, as they dodge drug lords on their tails and stomp some butt like no other nuns can. It's a fast-paced, one-liner packed thrill ride. The "They're still bad girls underneath," tag line is an understatement.
The official synopsis reads: Reminiscent of early Tarantino, this edgy, outrageous thriller is one 'habit' you'll want to acquire! The action begins as L.A. party girl Mads gets a gig running drugs for Eric, a washed-up Hollywood star. When their cash gets stolen and Eric is slain by a rival drug lord, Mads and her two sexy BFFs hide out by dressing up as nuns. But in spite of their costumes, these bad girls are no angels. The film also stars Paris Jackson, Hana Mae Lee (Pitch Perfect), and Gavin Rossdale (Constantine). Musicians Alison Mosshart, who's making her film debut,...

"Always did have a flavor for danger." Lionsgate has dropped a new trailer for a dark, edgy thriller comedy titled Habit, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Janell Shirtcliff. This film has dropped out of nowhere, not hitting any festivals or anywhere else before opening in August this summer. It definitely looks like a very Los Angeles film made by Los Angeles people for Los Angeles people. A street smart party girl gets mixed up in a violent drug deal and finds a possible way out by masquerading as a Nun with her other BFFs to escape a L.A. drug lord. The Habit ensemble cast includes Bella Thorne, Gavin Rossdale, Libby Mintz, Andreja Pejic, Hana Mae Lee, Ione Skye, Aaron Diaz, Jamie Hince, Hayley Marie Norman, Alison Mosshart, with Paris Jackson and Josie Ho. This (obviously) looks all wild & crazy, and instantly forgettable, another of these mediocre crime...

The Brad Furman-directed crime thriller City of Lies has had quite a journey, but the Saban Films release finally hits theaters today before dropping on digital and on demand April 9.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, City of Lies follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka the hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G.
Oscar and Emmy winner Forest Whitaker stars as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder. The two of them try to find the truth. They explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
It’s not a lie that City of Lies went through a lot to make its way to the theaters.

Netflix has served up a sequel to its surprise 2017 hit The Babysitter. The second movie in the budding franchise sees the lead character of Cole, played by Judah Lewis, being once again targeted for a satanic death ritual, only this time he is being hunted by a whole pack of his former enemies from the first movie and a fresh pack of bloodthirsty killers. In an interview, Lewis revealed one of his favorite scenes to film was when he was in the room with his many would-be murderers for the first time.
"It's really funny because what I like about it is these characters are out to kill Cole but he has these kinds of funny, oddball relationships with each of them that are specific and unique. And so it was so fun to be able to play off the groundwork that we laid in the first film and just...

The surprise hit 2017 Netflix horror-comedy The Babysitter recently had a sequel release titled The Babysitter: Killer Queen. The second movie in the franchise takes forward the story of teen misfit Cole Jonhson who finds himself the target of yet another satanic murder ritual after surviving the last one in the previous movie. The director of the movie, McG, told Cbr that fans can expect a second sequel if The Babysitter: Killer Queen proves as successful as the original film (Warning: Spoilers!).
"We have the story and I firmly put it in the hands of the audience: If the audience wants it, they'll see it and we'll do it and, if they say 'No, I don't like this' then we won't. And I would love to because I would love to conclude the arc of the Cole character. I love the surprises from the second movie, I love that Melanie is...

Just when you thought it was safe to check out Netflix tonight, the streamer has dumped a sequel to its 2017 hit The Babysitter into its endless river of algorithm-calibrated goo. But while some critics apparently found the first movie charming–and appreciated the presence of rising horror-comedy star Samara Weaving (Ready or Not)–The Babysitter: Killer Queen fails on every level to make even a perfunctory case for a follow-up.
For one thing, Weaving is not the lead baddie this time around, even if most of the rest of the cast from the original encore here. Now you may ask how all the other slain cultist villains return. But a script that combines “no one’s ever really dead in horror” contrivances with some motivation-destroying retconning makes it easy. Too easy. But nothing about the story makes sense on any level, and it’s a wonder that it took returning...

Tenet made the first truly significant amount of money at the box office last weekend that we've seen in months. Yes, movie theaters are open but we are still nowhere near living in a normal world. Luckily, movies are still abundantly making their way to streaming. This week is no exception and there are plenty of options to choose from for those who still prefer to stay home.
Netflix is bringing the goods this week with an acclaimed yet controversial (by their own doing) movie from a first-time director, as well as a new horror sequel. The streaming service also has a couple of documentaries coming our way as well. We also have a unique HBO presentation, a Helen Reddy biopic and more. Here are this week's streaming selections.
