In the realm of sci-fi franchises, "Stargate" may not get the recognition it deserves. After starting life as a blockbuster movie, it shifted over to the small screen beginning with the wildly successful "Stargate Sg-1." That gave rise to an entire universe filled with spin-offs, with hundreds of episodes of TV being produced over a 13 year span. But all good things eventually end, and the end of this franchise came when "Stargate Universe" was canceled by Syfy after two seasons. Unfortunately, the cast had to find out about it along with everyone else.

Deadline announced the show's cancellation in December 2010, with that news quickly making the rounds on Twitter. As reported by the fansite GateWorld at the time, David Blue, who played Eli Wallace, learned from the social networking site that his show wasn't coming back for a third season.

After Roland Emmerich said, "No, thanks" to a TV continuation of his modest box office hit "Stargate," Showtime set about doing it anyway. The network brought in Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner to create what became "Stargate Sg-1," and as it turned out, this was just the beginning of what quietly became one of the most sprawling sci-fi empires of the early 2000s.

"Sg-1" eventually moved to the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) but the network cancelled the show after its tenth season. By that point, however, it had already spawned the spin-off series "Stargate Atlantis," which debuted in 2004, alongside a couple of direct-to-tv films. More spin-offs would come, too, with "Stargate Universe" debuting in 2009 and "Stargate Origins" arriving in 2018.

In all, then, the "Stargate" universe is impressively expansive. But just because the franchise kept growing doesn't mean things panned out exactly how Wright and Glassner had hoped. For one thing,...

In fact, after the film proved a modest success at the box office, there was talk of making a whole "Stargate" trilogy. Kurt Russell might've refused to reprise his lead role as Colonel Jack O'Neill for the franchise's small-screen continuation, but Wright and Glassner had "MacGuyver" star Ricard Dean Anderson to help propel their series to success. Indeed, the show proved a cult hit, lasting for 10 seasons before the Sci-Fi channel (now SyFy) cancelled "Sg-1" in 2007.

Both "Stargate Sg-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" — television shows that continue the premise of Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" — are beloved entries within the franchise." There is a lot to love about both entries: the Stargate crew in both shows primarily explore alien planets and often get into conflicts with extraterrestrial races, and these adventures perfectly balance high-stakes thrills with emotional heft. Although some themes in these shows come close to complexity, the emphasis has always been on optimistic reliability, and how the characters feel larger-than-life despite being heroes in a futuristic setting.

There will be some interesting guest stars for fans to look forward to in Season 22 of NCIS. One guest star has been confirmed for the new season, and it's going to be a "fun" one, according to series star Katrina Law.

Per TVLine, Law hinted at a reunion for her Jessica Knight character in NCIS Season 22. One episode of the season will bring back Jessica's sister, Robin (Lilan Bowden). While specific plot details were not shared, Law teased, "I may have to be protective of people from my sister. Its going to be fun!

Each NCIS series has a collection of fun characters, but only one in each can be considered the best of the series.

Patrick Sky, a member of the Sixties Greenwich Village folk scene that launched Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, and many others, died on May 26th in Asheville, North Carolina. Sky had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2017, but according to his wife, folklorist and musician Cathy Larson Sky, Sky succumbed to prostate cancer and bone cancer. He was 80.

“Pat is one of the best story-tellers I know,” his friend and neighbor Van Ronk wrote in the liner notes to Sky’s 1965 self-titled debut album. “This is probably why he’s such a great singer.

Ralph Schuckett, a keyboard player best known as a member of Todd Rundgren’s Utopia as well as an in-demand session player and producer and, later, composer for “Pokemon” and other animation projects, died Sunday at 73.

No cause of death was immediately given, although he was known to have been ill. When a Utopia reunion tour was announced in early 2018, Schuckett was announced as part of the lineup and even met with other members for a publicity photo, but he was forced to withdraw shortly before rehearsals began.

Among his early studio credits prior to joining Utopia were Carole King’s first three albums, including the landmark “Tapestry.”

“Ralph Schuckett was a sweet guy, a great friend, and a very talented cat,” King said in a statement Wednesday morning. “That’s his sparkling piano on ‘Smackwater Jack.’ Rest In Peace and love.”

In the Seventies — or any other decade, in fact — it would have been hard to imagine less-likely duet partners than Bob Dylan and Bette Midler. In the fall of 1975, Dylan was newly invigorated, coming off Blood on the Tracks, and Midler was the midst of her first flush of pop fame, which had begun with her 1973 hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” From their voices to their personas, they didn’t just seem to exist on separate planets but in different galaxies.

Helen Reddy, the Australian pop singer who died Tuesday at age 78, was an unlikely pop superhero. She sang in a smooth timbre that never lost its becalmed manner — call her the anti-Joplin — and most of the Seventies hits for which she’s known (“Delta Dawn,” “No Way to Treat a Lady,” “Angie Baby”) were the essence of the smooth pop that appealed to baby boomers then approaching their settling-down thirties. As fanciful as Martin Scorsese’s new film about Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue of 1975 is, it doesn’t aim to turn truth into myth nearly as much as the infamous movie Dylan himself made during that period, “Renaldo and Clara” — in which the cast list had Ronee Blakley playing “Mrs. Dylan.” Whatever impish reasons he might have had for doing that, it was undoubtedly a sign of the affection Dylan had for Blakley, who’d come right off a promotional tour for Robert Altman’s “Nashville” onto his tour, with a quick stop to record his single “Hurricane.”

TBS’ Search Party has located NCIS: New Orleans alumna Shalita Grant: The actress will recur during Season 3 of the dark comedy, our sister site Deadline reports.

Joel Goldsmith, composer for “Stargate Sg-1″, “Star Trek” and “Call of Duty 3″ passed away on April 29, aged 54.

Joel, the eldest son of highly regarded film composer Jerry Goldsmith started his career creating sound effects for “Star Trek The Motion Picture”, but got his break scoring the music for ”Laserblast” and Steve Martin’s ”The Man With Two Brains.” He went on to write music for over 350 episodes of “Stargate” in its various franchise forms. He also helped his father and long time Star Trek composer Jerry Goldsmith, by scoring the first 20 minutes of “Star Trek First Contact”. He was making his move into videogames and composed the soundtrack to the hugely popular “Call of Duty 3″.

Joel Goldsmith was nominated for three Emmy awards in his career. In 1998 for the “Sg-1″ episode “The Nox,” in 2005 for the main title theme for “Atlantis,” and in 2006 for the “Atlantis” episode “Grace Under Pressure.

The Maryland senate approved marriage equality and sent the bill to the governor's desk, and he is expected to sign it. Sanctuary reaches the end of its third season on Space tonight and the episode, ‘Into the Black,’ promises to live up to the epic tradition the series’ writers have established for season finales. Shortly after filming was completed on the episode and the season, CinemaSpy sat down with star Agam Darshi to discuss year three and the evolution of her character, Kate Freelander.

Kate was written into Sanctuary in the show’s second season, coming in as a loose cannon with a past filled with criminal or otherwise unethical activities. Despite that, she was seen as an asset by Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and brought into the fold. Some fans of the show were less welcoming, however. They saw Kate as replacing the character of Helen’s daughter, Ashley Magnus (Emilie Ullerup). Ashley had been on the show since it started...

Stargate Universe was a tricky venture, but a risk I'm glad I got to see for as long as it lasted. The show drew heavy criticism from many franchise fans almost immediately, and never quite got the attention it needed, but it was an entertaining ride.

The second, and final, season found our crew battling for control of Destiny, continuing efforts to get home, and running into several time travel misadventures. The dark and stormy visuals continued, and the clashes among those trapped on the alien ship still didn't make for a very happy home.

While occasionally rather screwier in its plot developments than necessary, and with some characters who are less than fully realized, the show delivers a wild creativity you don't run into very often.

I suspect that the show's general aim was its own downfall, as it tried to create a spin on an existing niche franchise...

Syfy aired the series finale of Stargate Universe’s second season on Monday night. I hope you had a chance to catch it because it was one of the most moving series finales in recent memory. But "Common Descent" gave us twice the number of Destiny's crew having to survive. We’ve got an all new clip from Stargate Universe Episode 2.15, “Seizure,” taking us one more episode close to the series finale. Which character will you miss more. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) and Eli (David Blue). The two have a great on-screen dynamic, and I really enjoy their back-and-forth banter and wit matching. However, if I had to pick, I’d definitely say I’ll miss seeing Carlyle in this great role.
