In the realm of sci-fi franchises, "Stargate" may not get the recognition it deserves. After starting life as a blockbuster movie, it shifted over to the small screen beginning with the wildly successful "Stargate Sg-1." That gave rise to an entire universe filled with spin-offs, with hundreds of episodes of TV being produced over a 13 year span. But all good things eventually end, and the end of this franchise came when "Stargate Universe" was canceled by Syfy after two seasons. Unfortunately, the cast had to find out about it along with everyone else.
Deadline announced the show's cancellation in December 2010, with that news quickly making the rounds on Twitter. As reported by the fansite GateWorld at the time, David Blue, who played Eli Wallace, learned from the social networking site that his show wasn't coming back for a third season.

After Roland Emmerich said, "No, thanks" to a TV continuation of his modest box office hit "Stargate," Showtime set about doing it anyway. The network brought in Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner to create what became "Stargate Sg-1," and as it turned out, this was just the beginning of what quietly became one of the most sprawling sci-fi empires of the early 2000s.
"Sg-1" eventually moved to the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) but the network cancelled the show after its tenth season. By that point, however, it had already spawned the spin-off series "Stargate Atlantis," which debuted in 2004, alongside a couple of direct-to-tv films. More spin-offs would come, too, with "Stargate Universe" debuting in 2009 and "Stargate Origins" arriving in 2018.
In all, then, the "Stargate" universe is impressively expansive. But just because the franchise kept growing doesn't mean things panned out exactly how Wright and Glassner had hoped. For one thing,...

When Roland Emmerich made his 1994 sci-fi adventure "Stargate," he likely never envisioned the sprawling media saga that would follow. In fact, after the film proved a modest success at the box office, there was talk of making a whole "Stargate" trilogy. Instead, Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner took on the task of continuing the story begun by Emmerich. The pair oversaw "Stargate Sg-1," a TV show that launched in 1997 and revolved around the same team from the movie, following their exploits across the universe as they explore strange alien worlds using the Stargate portal. Kurt Russell might've refused to reprise his lead role as Colonel Jack O'Neill for the franchise's small-screen continuation, but Wright and Glassner had "MacGuyver" star Ricard Dean Anderson to help propel their series to success. Indeed, the show proved a cult hit, lasting for 10 seasons before the Sci-Fi channel (now SyFy) cancelled "Sg-1" in 2007.

Both "Stargate Sg-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" — television shows that continue the premise of Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" — are beloved entries within the franchise." While "Stargate Sg-1" was conceived as a direct sequel to Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi adventure film, "Stargate Atlantis" served as a spin-off to a particular "Sg-1" season finale in which the central crew discovers a lost civilization. There is a lot to love about both entries: the Stargate crew in both shows primarily explore alien planets and often get into conflicts with extraterrestrial races, and these adventures perfectly balance high-stakes thrills with emotional heft. Although some themes in these shows come close to complexity, the emphasis has always been on optimistic reliability, and how the characters feel larger-than-life despite being heroes in a futuristic setting.

Right up until his death in 2022, Bob Neuwirth was known to cognoscenti as a songwriter (“Mercedes Benz,” famously recorded by Janis Joplin), painter, recording artist, and onetime member of Bob Dylan’s inner hipster circle. The last thing he was known for was being famous, which his longtime partner, music executive Paula Batson, says was intentional. “He was very self-effacing in a way,” she says. “He didn’t believe in blowing your own horn. He loved promoting other people and helping them, but he wasn’t good at self-promotion.”

Ralph Schuckett, a keyboard player best known as a member of Todd Rundgren’s Utopia as well as an in-demand session player and producer and, later, composer for “Pokemon” and other animation projects, died Sunday at 73.
No cause of death was immediately given, although he was known to have been ill. When a Utopia reunion tour was announced in early 2018, Schuckett was announced as part of the lineup and even met with other members for a publicity photo, but he was forced to withdraw shortly before rehearsals began.
Among his early studio credits prior to joining Utopia were Carole King’s first three albums, including the landmark “Tapestry.”
“Ralph Schuckett was a sweet guy, a great friend, and a very talented cat,” King said in a statement Wednesday morning. “That’s his sparkling piano on ‘Smackwater Jack.’ Rest In Peace and love.”

In the Seventies — or any other decade, in fact — it would have been hard to imagine less-likely duet partners than Bob Dylan and Bette Midler. In the fall of 1975, Dylan was newly invigorated, coming off Blood on the Tracks, and Midler was the midst of her first flush of pop fame, which had begun with her 1973 hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” From their voices to their personas, they didn’t just seem to exist on separate planets but in different galaxies.

Helen Reddy, the Australian pop singer who died Tuesday at age 78, was an unlikely pop superhero. She sang in a smooth timbre that never lost its becalmed manner — call her the anti-Joplin — and most of the Seventies hits for which she’s known (“Delta Dawn,” “No Way to Treat a Lady,” “Angie Baby”) were the essence of the smooth pop that appealed to baby boomers then approaching their settling-down thirties. Reddy was more of a regular presence on talk and variety shows and in Vegas than at rock clubs.

He knew the right people, worked with the right collaborators, and looked and dressed better than many in his circle. But as even his friends acknowledged, timing was never one of David Blue’s strong suits — and if anyone needed a reminder, it arrived at his funeral.
For much of Blue’s career leading up to that day in December 1982, life hadn’t seemed especially fair. The singer, songwriter, and guitarist had rarely complained about it, but everyone except him seemed to be reaping the rewards of a life in music.

As fanciful as Martin Scorsese’s new film about Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue of 1975 is, it doesn’t aim to turn truth into myth nearly as much as the infamous movie Dylan himself made during that period, “Renaldo and Clara” — in which the cast list had Ronee Blakley playing “Mrs. Dylan.” Whatever impish reasons he might have had for doing that, it was undoubtedly a sign of the affection Dylan had for Blakley, who’d come right off a promotional tour for Robert Altman’s “Nashville” onto his tour, with a quick stop to record his single “Hurricane.”
Blakley appears in archival footage and fresh interviews in the Netflix film “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese,” and she can also be heard singing with Dylan throughout the new 14-cd boxed set “Rolling Thunder: The 1975 Live Recordings.” She’s also known for her solo albums...

"I'm suggesting a little competition..." Gravitas Ventures has debuted the first trailer for Harvey Lowry's indie comedy The Competition, making fun of relationships and the way things work in this day and age. Thora Birch stars as a woman who becomes the "voice of a generation" by starting a romance blog about how relationships should only last 6 months, at which point you must break up before your mate becomes unfaithful. She is introduced to the perfect guy, played by Chris Klein, but refuses his advances. So they setup a challenge to choose five friends in long relationships and attempt to get them to cheat. It plays out from there, and yadda yadda. The film's full cast includes Claire Coffee, David Blue, Gabrielle Stone, Jason Tobias, and Tiffany Fallon. Not really my kind of romantic comedy, but check this out if you want. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Harvey Lowry's The Competition,...

And the next UK series to get remade for U.S. viewers is… Bad Education. ABC is adapting the Britcom bringing star Jack Whitehall along as the unconventional teacher who battles with school administrators focused on test scores. Unfortunately, I hear it will be revamped into a wacky sitcom about the school’s hockey team with a Friends alum playing the coach.
It’s one of TV’s most-watched programs and Downton Abbey has been renewed for a fifth season. PBS will air the season, probably after fans have had to work to avoid spoilers for months.
Oh dear. Someone is hoping to make a reality show about furries. If this goes well, I’ will be very surprised.
The failure of Ender’s Game in movie theatres makes it unlikely that Orson Scott Card‘s other novels will make it to be big screen. However, Lionsgate says it is still considering a TV spin-off.

Over the weekend in Australia, Zac Efron was snapped on the balcony of his hotel room shirtless, digging around in his pants, and later, after a shower, he may have displayed one perfectly shaped, tanned butt cheek to the photographers. Or not, according to some. But let's keep the fantasy, Ok?
Anne Rice, fresh off a hilarious interview with Stephen Colbert, posted an Easter message to the gays on her Facebook page. "Happy Easter, Gay People of the World: you have indeed risen in the last few decades from centuries of persecution and oppression. May this be a great holiday for you all wherever you are. You are winning the battle for equal rights. And your victory over discrimination and hate is a victory for all oppressed persons. Happy Easter!"
In the UK, The Sunday Times took the anti-marriage position, putting itself in opposition to The Times, which came out for equality last week.

The Maryland senate approved marriage equality and sent the bill to the governor's desk, and he is expected to sign it. That will start the clock for opponents to begin gathering signatures to put repeal on the ballot.
Meanwhile, in Maine, activists have collected enough signatures to place marriage equality on the ballot this year, with new polling showing support growing rapidly.

I imagine his kids make him smile a great deal.
Oddly, when celebrities tweet about their kids it can be kind of endearing, which is completely unlike people you run into in the grocery store with their endless stories about their kid's little league games. And when it's an out and proud celebrity, it's really breathtaking in a way. Sean Maher talks about both the good and the bad with his kids, like the loss of sleep.

Just a reminder, we're on a reduced schedule this week. We'll have a Meme, Briefs, and a few things in between. We'll be back to our normal schedule next week. Until then follow our Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr for things that we hope will amuse you.
Robbie Williams was on his Radio Rudebox show when friends suggested that £5 million was a good price to pay him for gay sex. Williams considered it and decided that £2 million was fair, but not for Brad Pitt. "It’s £2 million for Santa, but it’s a freebie for Brad Pitt." He then thought for a minute and said “How much would I have to pay him?”
Good news everyone! Paris Hilton is no longer banned from the Wynn Hotels in Las Vegas after being arrested in the bathrooms. Which means it's safe for the rest of us at The Palms.

He hasn't changed much from his modeling days.
And...we're back! Sorry about the holiday break from Twitterwatch, but the big sales right after Thanksgiving take a lot out of me. Looks like Black Friday took something out of a lot of celebrities too. Some of this week's featured players seem angry enough at their fellow man to pull out the pepper spray.
Victor Webster has been in some of my favorite campy shows like Mutant X and Melrose Place, and he always managed to bring that incredible body he's had since his modeling days. Perhaps he should take up boxing as a fitness activity. It might let him work out his frustrations. Of course, we've all been there.
Trevor Donovan is generally the cuddly one around here, appearing with little Tito and looking every bit the blond California stud he is. Who knew he had an angry side? I wonder what his neighbor did?...

Their bromance was always borderline sexual.
Welcome to Twitterwatch, where we distill the entire celebrity social media landscape over the last week in just a few pages. This week we've got celebrities from A to Z!
To celebrate the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Zach Braff and Donald Faison revisited their epic bromance on Scrubs. This actually went on for several tweets, but this one from Zach captured the essence.
Speaking of hot celebrities who aren't gay but seem open to the idea, this came from hunky slab of man Eddie McClintock. Eddie - call me, I'm available for lessons.
And in case you're wondering what Eddie's type is, he likes them beefy, just like himself.
I can see the attraction.
Since we're talking about unexpected propositions, Gavin Creel had one while out and about. But he never says if he took the guy up on it.

Welcome to Twitterwatch, in which we check in on your favorite celebrities to see just what crosses their minds at 140 characters or less over the course of a week.
As you can see at the top of the page, Alan Cumming pulled off a neat trick - he made a worst-dressed list in one of the celebrity tabloids, which is almost unheard of for a man. Well, it's almost unheard of for a man other than Alan Cumming. For him, it could be a retirement plan.
And honestly, Alan should be on his best behavior, because it's Fall Fashion Week in New York City where he lives. And that means one thing: Anna Wintour comes out of her lair. And if she sees her shadow, we all get to wear white for six more weeks. Or something like that.

Agam Darshi as Kate Freelander in 'Sanctuary'.
Sanctuary reaches the end of its third season on Space tonight and the episode, ‘Into the Black,’ promises to live up to the epic tradition the series’ writers have established for season finales. Shortly after filming was completed on the episode and the season, CinemaSpy sat down with star Agam Darshi to discuss year three and the evolution of her character, Kate Freelander.
Kate was written into Sanctuary in the show’s second season, coming in as a loose cannon with a past filled with criminal or otherwise unethical activities. Despite that, she was seen as an asset by Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and brought into the fold. Some fans of the show were less welcoming, however. They saw Kate as replacing the character of Helen’s daughter, Ashley Magnus (Emilie Ullerup). Ashley had been on the show since it started...

Stargate Universe was a tricky venture, but a risk I'm glad I got to see for as long as it lasted. The show drew heavy criticism from many franchise fans almost immediately, and never quite got the attention it needed, but it was an entertaining ride.
The second, and final, season found our crew battling for control of Destiny, continuing efforts to get home, and running into several time travel misadventures. The dark and stormy visuals continued, and the clashes among those trapped on the alien ship still didn't make for a very happy home.
While occasionally rather screwier in its plot developments than necessary, and with some characters who are less than fully realized, the show delivers a wild creativity you don't run into very often.
I suspect that the show's general aim was its own downfall, as it tried to create a spin on an existing niche franchise...

Syfy aired the series finale of Stargate Universe’s second season on Monday night. I hope you had a chance to catch it because it was one of the most moving series finales in recent memory. Though this finale was taped to be a season finale, it still worked well with bringing closure to the series and hard earned character development while ultimately leaving the storyline open-ended.

This review may contain spoilers. Having to survive is the main goal for everyone on Destiny. Each episode gives the viewers a new challenge to overcome. But "Common Descent" gave us twice the number of Destiny's crew having to survive. It turns out that in a time traveling twist, when the crew left Destiny for Earth in "Twin Destinies" before the second Rush (Robert Carlyle) came back and changed the outcome the alternate crew ended up on a new planet. That alternate crew served as the founders of a new civilization. For once, the kino footage served as more than just an initial scout for information through the gate or as extra entertainment on the web for viewers. Eli (David Blue), Camile (Ming-Na), and others got to watch the beginnings of the civilization built off of their ...

Personally, I’m a huge fan of Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) and Eli (David Blue). The two have a great on-screen dynamic, and I really enjoy their back-and-forth banter and wit matching.
