Blonde Redhead are back with the new single “Before,” another sample of their upcoming album Sit Down for Dinner.
“Before” is billed as “one of the most sonically playful tracks on the album,” and encapsulates the feeling of being a kid and thinking you’re wise before the world inevitable jades you: “I don’t need to see/ I already know/ I can tell you I’ve seen it all before/ Once upon a time/ Was I a silent child seen it all before/ Stop before you run/ Before you make a run/ Turn it upside down,” vocalist Kazu Makino sings over a skittish beat.
Kazu explains the song’s backstory further in a statement: “Some children seem quite knowing as if they remember their past lives… or at least that’s the impression I get. The song is a sort of celebration of that kind of quality in a young person.

Blonde Redhead are back with Sit Down for Dinner, their first new album since 2014. Out September 29th, the LP features the lead single, “Snowman,” and will be supported by a tour of North America, the UK, and Europe.
Sit Down for Dinner was written over a five-year period in locations spanning from New York City and upstate New York to Milan and Tuscany. The album’s lyrics address the inescapable struggles of adulthood, whether it’s a communication breakdown, wondering which way to turn, or holding onto your dreams.
Band member Kazu Makino found inspiration for the album from a passage in Joan Didion’s 2005 memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, that resonated with the uncertainty of the early pandemic months and the temporarily lost ritual of eating dinner with her parents far away in Japan: “Life changes fast. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and...

Kazu Makino, known as the lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of alt-rock band Blonde Redhead, has announced her first solo LP, Adult Baby, scheduled for release later this year. On Thursday, she shared the first single off the record, “Salty,” together with a video.
The Paride Ambrogi-directed clip was filmed on Italy’s Elba Island – Kazu splits her time between there and New York – and shows the avant-garde pop musician exploring the beach and wandering through a forest, all while dreamy layers of synths and vocal harmonies play over her.
