When Emmy presenter Catherine O’Hara announced “Hacks” as the winner of Best Comedy Series at Sunday’s Primetime ceremony, awards pundits everywhere had to pick their jaws up off the floor. “The Bear” was the overwhelming front-runner to claim its second victory in that top category, especially after setting a new comedy record in 2024 for 11 wins in the same season. But “Hacks” prevailed, and in doing so it became only the third show in history to win Best Comedy Series for Season 3 after losing its first two bids.
The other two laffers to accomplish this rare Emmy feat are “Get Smart” in 1968 and “Sex and the City” in 2001, which means “Hacks” now finds itself in rare company indeed. For the record, “Get Smart” lost for Season 1 in 1966 to “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and lost for Season 2 in 1967 to “The Monkees”; “Sex and the City” lost for Season 1 in 1999 to...

Awards shows are often only as memorable as the winners and their acceptance speeches. Heading into the 76th Emmys, the conventional wisdom was that Television Academy voters would make it a predictable sweep for “Shōgun” and “The Bear.” And indeed, both series did well, making history with their victories. But there were still enough surprises during the telecast, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, to make for an interesting night.
The biggest shocker, of course, came at the end of the broadcast, when “Hacks” pulled off an upset win over frontrunner “The Bear” in the outstanding comedy series category. That was a clear flex by the writer flank of the TV Academy to reward a beloved show that revolves around the business of comedy — as a point of contrast to shows that tip to the drama side of the dramedy equation. For producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay,...

Award ceremonies these days are a huge deal on social media, full of everything from hilarious moments to the downright bizarre and controversial. The winners’ speeches usually get a lot of attention, but things can go south quickly if something goes really wrong.

Disney just made history at the 2024 Emmy Awards with a record haul of gold! Here’s a look at the highlights of their big wins!
The Emmy Awards are always a huge deal for television, the annual recognition of the best on network, cable and streaming. This year is interesting as, for the first time, there were two Emmy ceremonies in one year. Usually airing in September, the 2023 Emmys had to be delayed due to the Hollywood strikes that prevented actors and writers from promoting their works. They did air in January 2024.
The 76th Emmy Awards aired Sunday, September 15 and did have some big wins for Netflix’s wild Baby Reindeer, which won Best Limited Series and Actor and Actress there. Also, HBO’s Hacks won for Outstanding Comedy Series and star Jean Smart earned another Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy award.

The 2023 Emmy Awards were pushed from their usual September date to January 2024 due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, making Sunday’s Emmys the second of this calendar year. Any series or made-for-tv film entries at these awards must have been released between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.

After record-low viewership for the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards, which aired in early 2024 due to strike delays, ABC pulled out a lot of stops to make the true 2024 Emmys a must-watch event. With a presenter line-up that read like a who’s who of classic television, some fresh new talent (mostly from Shogun) leading the charge on the year’s drama categories, delightful upsets on the comedy side (hello Hacks!), and the feel-good father-son duo of Eugene and Dan Levy as emcees, the telecast was certainly full of treats for TV fans. But did audiences tune in to see the show? The answer is yes. Ratings for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards are in, and the show received an audience of 6.87 million total viewers, a 54 percent increase in total viewers and a 17 percent increase in adults 18-49 from the 75th Emmys, which aired on Fox in January and earned just 4.3 million viewers,...

The second Emmy Awards telecast of this year delivered 6.87 million total viewers, ABC announced on Monday, marking a three-year high for the annual awards show. That number represents a whopping 54% improvement on the all-time low delivered by January’s Hollywood strikes-delayed ceremony.
Sunday night’s telecast also earned a 1.02 rating in the key 18-49 demo, which is up 17% from January’s ceremony. Hosted by the father-son team of Eugene and Dan Levy, ABC’s Emmys broadcast earned an average TVLine reader grade of “C+” (read our own review here).

Returning to their usual September berth helped give a big boost to the TV ratings for the 2024 Emmys.
Sunday’s awards show, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy on ABC, averaged 6.9 million viewers in final same-day ratings from Nielsen. That’s a 55 percent jump over the delayed 2023 awards, which pulled in 4.46 million viewers — an all-time low for the awards (at least in the 35 to 40 years of total viewer records). The 2023 Emmys aired on Fox in January, four months later than usual after last year’s writers and actors strikes.
Sunday’s broadcast also drew a 1.03 rating among adults 18-49, an 18 percent improvement over last year’s low.
The Emmys have struggled in the ratings even before the Covid-19 pandemic produced lows across the board for awards shows. While the Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes have since rebounded some since then (though not to their former heights), the Emmys telecast hasn...

Sunday’s 76th annual Emmy Awards drew 6.87 million viewers on ABC, according to Nielsen, marking a 54-percent improvement over the prior Emmys telecast. It was the largest audience for the Emmys in three years.
The producers at Jesse Collins Entertainment, including Jesse Collins, can breathe a sigh of relief — not that they had a particularly high hurdle to clear.
The January 2024 Emmys on Fox settled for 4.46 million total viewers, a record low. The audience for the off-cycle celebration was down substantially from the September 2022 Emmy Awards, which averaged 5.9 million viewers — a record-low for the show at the time. The unfortunately-timed January telecast opposed an NFL Playoffs game, which is just about as bad as it gets in terms of live-tv competition.
Originally, those 75th Emmy Awards were booked for September 18, 2023, but the ongoing WGA strike pushed that plan. Even when that finally ended about a week later, the show could not go on.

There’s no shortage of Monday morning quarterbacks after an awards show. But for all that went right and not-so-right during Sunday’s 2024 Emmys telecast, there’s one mistake even the producers agree on: John Oliver was played off at the exact wrong moment.
Around an hour and 15 minutes into the show, Oliver accepted the award for outstanding scripted variety show on behalf of his Last Week Tonight staff. He flubbed his own son’s name. He thanked HBO for not canceling him. And, as he began to share a few words about his late dog, the wrap-up music started to play. “We had no idea that the dog that he was talking about had passed away,” says executive producer Dionne Harmon. “If you look back, you’ll notice that we turned the music down the moment he said the dog had passed. We didn’t know!”

The TV world is all aflutter, because Emmy weekend is here! The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, will take place this Sunday evening in Hollywood (and air live on ABC at 5 p.m. Pt/8 p.m. Et); last weekend, the first two rounds of statuettes were distributed at the Creative Arts Emmys.
That means time is limited if you want to catch up on the nominees before the big winners are announced — and with 107 nominations for Netflix titles this year, there’s no shortage of options. But don’t worry! No matter how much time you have this weekend to devote to doing your Emmy homework, you can make sure you spend it on a stream that sticks you right in the middle of the awards season action, whether with a pair of films, a trio of docs, or a powerhouse collection of multi-nominated drama series.

There was a lot to digest during Sunday night’s Emmys telecast, namely that telling twist of Hacks snagging best comedy over The Bear, but what happened off camera proved much more illuminating. We were there to chronicle all of the confusion, ring-kissing and sloppy standing ovations — as well as that mass exodus for the lobby bar.
The Schadenfreude Is Real
There was nothing wrong with Eugene and Dan Levy’s hosting job or monologue. That said, the room was noticeably hungry for some snark — as evidenced by the big laugh Eugene got when he said, “in the spirit of The Bear, we will not be making a joke about it being a comedy.” It truly hit better than any other punchline of the night — and proved quite prophetic when TV Academy voters were revealed to have picked joke-joke-joke comedy Hacks over the reigning restaurant dramedy for the night’s final award.

Perhaps the toughest call for an awards producer is figuring out when to start playing a winner off the stage. On Sunday night’s 76th Emmys, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” had just won yet another prize — its second in a row for scripted variety series — and the host’s speech had started to go long.
A flustered Oliver had already botched his son Hudson’s name (calling him “Husband” by mistake) and then started to talk about his dog. For the Jesse Collins Entertainment team, it felt like a good time to wrap things up. So, they kicked the playoff music into high gear.
And then, Oliver revealed the kicker, as the orchestral music got louder: The dog had just died.

Emmy turned 76 this year, but her wrinkles still aren’t showing thanks to the tireless efforts of the production crew that helped put on this year’s awards show. (See the complete winners list.) After watching the ceremony on television all my life, I actually got to attend it this year and bore witness to “Hacks” and “Shōgun” winning the night’s biggest prizes. While seated in the Orchestra section of the Peacock Theater, I uncovered these five secrets about the 2024 Emmys that you wouldn’t know unless you were actually there.

You’re not seeing double — nine months after the last round of Emmy winners were named, it was time to dress up and do it all over again.

Not a lot of earth-shattering moments at last night’s Emmy Awards, but at least there were a handful of good jokes. In between Shogun and Hacks taking home the night’s major awards, here were the evening’s nine best punchlines and funniest moments…

If you tuned out the 76th Emmys (feeling every bit its age) at or before the three-hour mark — and who could blame you — you missed one of the few shockers of the night, when Max’s Hacks won the Outstanding Comedy Series award in an upset over FX/Hulu’s presumed favorite The Bear. Consider this a triumph for comedy with an actual funny bone. Although, why again doesn’t Hacks air on HBO? Mostly, though, this muted ceremony (which went nearly 10 minutes over schedule but felt much longer) plodded on through genial if toothless banner from its father-son hosts, Schitt’s Creek Emmy winners Eugene and Dan Levy, and largely predictable ...

During the opening patter between father-son hosts Eugene and Dan Levy at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, the Levys acknowledged that many in the audience might expect them to make a joke about how The Bear isn’t a comedy, despite its 23 nominations across various comedy categories. “But in the spirit of The Bear, we won’t be making any jokes,” Eugene quipped.
The response from the crowd sounded different from how they reacted to the Levys’ other punchlines, as if the attendees were both scandalized and...

Eugene and Dan Levy hosted the 76th Emmy Awards — or as Dan called it, “Broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.” It was the year’s second Emmys show, since the 2023 ceremony got delayed by the strike until this past January. The father-son duo kept it light and affable and Canadian all night, reprising their Schitt’s Creek chemistry. The January ceremony went for low-key nostalgic charm; this was a rerun that turned into your basic blah-bath. Pretty standard for the Emmys, always the least glam,...

For me the big story of the night at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday was the completely unexpected win by Hacks for Best Comedy Series over The Bear, which was coming off a record 10 Emmy wins in January for its first season. Season 2 of The Bear led with another record 23 nominations, steamrolled through the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend with seven wins, and had another four Sunday night leading up to the final award of the evening. At this point, it felt like a no brainer that the FX series about a chef returning to Chicago to run a restaurant would win. But then the Shocker.
Max’s Hacks, now in its third season, somehow pulled it off and won Best Comedy Series having already scored Comedy Writing and a third win for star Jean Smart as Outstanding Leading Actress in Comedy Series. And although this was the...

FX’s popular series “The Bear” took home a record number of awards at this year’s Emmy ceremony. The show, which follows a talented young chef running his family’s Chicago sandwich shop, won 11 Emmys total. This is the most wins ever for a comedy series in a single year.
While “The Bear” lost the top comedy series award to “Hacks” for the second year in a row, the series still had an extremely successful night. Lead actor Jeremy Allen White received an Emmy for his role as Chef Carmy Berzatto. In his speech, White said the show has “changed my life” and given him hope that positive change is possible.
Supporting actors Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas also won Emmys for their roles as manager Richie and employee Tina. Moss-Bachrach and Colon-Zayas both gave impactful speeches about their characters and backgrounds. Colon-Zayas encouraged Latino voters to make their voices heard.

And just like that, another hotly contested Emmy awards season race has come to a close. After last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes pushed the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony into January of this year, last night the glitzy statue-doling bash's 76th edition — this year hosted by Schitt's Creek's Eugene and Dan Levy — took place at the Peacock Theater in LA. And on a night of few major surprises, the two most nominated shows of the year — samurai epic Shōgun and kitchen-based "comedy" The Bear — got their hands ("Hands!") on 18 and 11 awards respectively, including historic Outstanding Actor and Actress In A Drama wins for the former's Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, and second Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor wins for the latter's Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

From the moment Eugene and Dan Levy casually strolled on stage — without so much as a pre-taped lead-in video — the 2024 Emmy Awards felt like nothing special. After all, many of the attendees had already been to an Emmys ceremony this year. Getting hyped to watch the same winners, year after year, is a recurring issue for TV’s grandest night, but the challenge becomes that much harder when a chunk of those winners were rewarded less than nine months ago. Similarly buzz-killing is the idea that the new winners are predetermined, as many expected “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “The Bear” to do well at the 76th Emmy Awards, which they did. For the most part.
But despite slight early surprises (Liza Colon-Zayas! Lamorne Morris!) and a major late stunner (“Hacks” putting the “comedy” back in Best Comedy Series), ABC’s telecast was constantly fighting familiarity, if not outright redundancy. Where...

I have no clue if the expression “run it back” originated in sports, but I most frequently hear it in the context of the end of a successful season, when a player or coach or owner expresses the desire to keep all of the key pieces in place in order to repeat the prior achievement. Sometimes it works and a dynasty is born. Sometimes, though, an effort to run it back falls flat, proving how ephemeral the initial triumph was in the first place.
Back in January, the strike-delayed 75th Primetime Emmy Awards proved to be one of the best awards telecasts in recent memory. Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the show was packed with memorable moments that reflected a love for and pride in the medium of television.

The West Wing, Happy Days, Saturday Night Live, Reba and Schitt’s Creek were among the popular series to reunite their casts at the 2024 Emmys.
With NBC’s The West Wing celebrating the 25th anniversary of its series premiere on Sept. 22, 1999, the show’s stars Martin Sheen, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff and Allison Janney took the stage in front of a replica of its Oval Office set. Aaron Sorkin created the program that ran for seven seasons and centered on the administration of President Josiah Bartlet (Sheen).
“It’s hard to believe that just 25 years ago, Aaron and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plotlines for The West Wing,” Janney quipped. Schiff added, “Unlike today, where storylines can be plucked right off the news — storylines that writers would have deemed a bit far-fetched, if not utterly ridiculous, 25 years ago.”

It took almost three hours for Emmy voters to render their verdict on the great “Bear” controversy, but that verdict came down clearly with the final award announced at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
“The Bear,” which had won 10 awards in January when the 75th Emmys were handed out, won another seven at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys and four more during Sunday’s show. But then, when Catherine O’Hara opened the envelope for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy that seemed all but certain to complete the FX show’s near-sweep of the comedy categories, she read the title “Hacks.”
How on earth could “The Bear” have done so well with voters and then lost the big award? What did “Hacks” have that it didn’t?
That’s easy: Humor.

Hacks cooked up a major upset for the final category at the 2024 Emmys.
The Max series won the Emmy Award for best comedy series for its third season, marking its third win of the ceremony. Also nominated in the category were The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows.
In her acceptance speech for the award, series co-creator Lucia Aniello emphasized the value of comedy. “Comedy is so important, obviously, to us, but we really feel like it can bridge divides,” she said. “When you laugh with someone, you have something in common with them. So please support comedy. It speaks truth to power. It really does, so support your local comedian.”

It’s hard to make a yearly awards show feel special when it’s staged twice in one year. Such was the challenge facing the 76th annual Emmy Awards, which aired just eight months after its warmly nostalgic predecessor due to the prior show’s strike-related delay. (Both shows were helmed by the same producing team.) Factor in the Television Academy’s tendency toward repeat honorees — and more recently, select shows to sweep all awards in their category within a given year — and it’s understandable why Sunday’s broadcast was a relatively muted affair. But drab is drab. Whatever the justifications, the 76th Emmys were a far less dynamic and more stilted watch than the January show.
Take the signature flourish of a night that was otherwise straightforwardly staged: grouping presenters by archetype of character, from fathers to villains to doctors, and surrounding them with custom sets and backdrops.

Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.
Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

Several stars brought Israel-Hamas ceasefire advocacy to the 2024 Emmys on Sunday.

Shogun capped its big night at the 2024 Emmys with a pivotal win.
The FX/Hulu series won for best drama series, notching its fourth award of the night. Shogun, which landed 25 Emmy nominations for its first season, prevailed in the category over fellow nominees The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses and 3 Body Problem.
In his acceptance speech, co-creator Justin Marks thanked the executives who helped make the show happen. “You guys greenlit a very expensive, subtitled, Japanese period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition,” Marks quipped. “I have no idea why you did that, but thank you for your faith in this incredible team.”
He continued, “Shogun is a show about translation — not what is lost, but what is found when you do safety meetings in two languages, and you learn not to walk on tatami mats with your utility boots.

It was a tame throwback Sunday at the Emmy Awards tonight with blasts from the past taking center stage in a show seemingly longing for another era.
Besides the unexpected and well deserved Best Comedy win for Hacks, the show was full of predictable trophies for FX’s Shōgun and The Bear and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. There have been years when the Primetime Emmys telecast is riddled with surprise, out-of-left-field winners, and until the very last minute, this ceremony was not one of them. As the experts predicted, “Shōgun” pretty much ran the table, and it and “The Bear” both set records for the most awarded shows ever for a drama and a comedy, respectively. As the hosts Eugene and Dan Levy also noted in their opening banter, “Shōgun” actually set its record during the Creative Arts Emmys with 14 wins, and only furthered that record with four wins on Sunday. And “The Bear” set its record despite providing the one true shock of the night, its loss for best comedy to “Hacks”!
Meanwhile, the Emmys did manage to slip in some unexpected wins — in one case, one even went to, yes, “The Bear.” Here they are.

Television’s biggest night felt smaller heading into Sunday night’s 76th annual Emmy Awards. Since the 2023 Emmys were unceremoniously booted to 2024 after last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, this year’s ceremony was the second in nine months. The 2024 Emmys also took a backseat to national headlines: another assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, another Kansas City Chiefs game with Taylor Swift in attendance, and another Trump social media post that raised eyebrows (“I Hate Taylor Swift”).
But the second Emmys of 2024 acquitted itself well despite that excess baggage with a brisk show that honored the medium, crowned several deserving winners, and ended with a shocking win for “Hacks” that few saw coming.
The headline out of the 2024 Emmys is that “Hacks,” despite only winning two awards heading into the final award of the night, upset “The Bear” to win Best Comedy Series. The unexpected outcome — a...

Anna Sawai made history after winning the Emmy for best drama actress for Shogun during Sunday night’s 2024 Emmys.
With her first Emmy win, Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win in the lead actress in a drama series category at the Emmys.
Sawai was nominated alongside Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).
When taking the stage, a visibly emotional Sawai quipped, “I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today.”
She began her speech by thanking the Academy for nominating her alongside people she “grew up watching and love.” She went on to thank the FX team for “believing in our story” as well as co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo for giving her “the role of a lifetime” as Lady Mariko.

We’re back for our second Emmys ceremony in eight months — and maybe that explains why the whole night felt so listless. Sunday’s Emmys broadcast on ABC certainly had its moments and honored some outstanding shows and performances along the way. But overall, it was a disappointingly stuffy, by-the-numbers production that failed to capture the passion and creativity found on the small screen these days. TV is as daring as it’s ever been… but these Emmys weren’t nearly bold enough to reflect that.

Laraine Newman isn’t holding back her thoughts on the Emmy-winning series The Bear.
The original Saturday Night Live castmember took to X on Sunday night to slam the FX/Hulu hit show for competing in the comedy categories at the 2024 Emmys.
“Every time I think about The Bear being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing,” Newman wrote.
Later in the ceremony, when The Bear set a new record for most wins in a single season for a comedy with 11 (surpassing its own tally from last year when it won 10), the actress added in a since-deleted tweet, “Fuck. The. Bear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
She later tweeted a clarification, writing, “I think the Bear is a great show but Imho it’s not a comedy- not even a dark comedy.”

Baby Reindeer mastermind Richard Gadd had a pointed message for the television decision-makers while capping off the show’s big night at the 2024 Emmys.
The Netflix program prevailed for best limited or anthology series, marking its fourth prize of the night. Also nominated in the category were Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley and True Detective: Night Country.
During his acceptance speech, creator and star Gadd offered advice for how TV platforms can improve their fortunes amid this current downturn for the industry. He pointed out that Baby Reindeer, while based on his autobiographical one-man show, did not originate from something with a known fan base.
“I know the industry is in a slump right now, and I know it might put pressure on networks and stuff to tighten the purse strings and broaden the slate, But I do believe no slump was ever broken without willingness to take risks,” Gadd said,...
