A new Halloween-themed horror-comedy film streaming exclusively on Hulutransforms a traditional jack-o’-lantern into a terrifying antagonist. “Carved” tells the story of a small New England town recovering from a chemical spill where a strangely large pumpkin mutates and goes on a violent rampage.
The movie is set in 1993 in the fictional town of Cedar Creek, Massachusetts. The community is still rebuilding after a train derailed the year before, spilling unknown chemicals. Siblings Kira and Trevor are caring for themselves since losing their parents in the accident. As the town prepares for its annual Pumpkin Fest, local resident Clint finds an enormous, grotesque pumpkin and enters it in the carving contest.
Things take a dark turn when the mutated pumpkin springs to life. With tangled vines protruding from its eyes and mouth, it uses a bizarre spider-like movement to attack anyone who dares carve another pumpkin. Director Justin Harding, who...

Carved is the latest horror-comedy to hit Hulu as part of its yearly celebration of Huluween, and it's easily one of the craziest creature features of the year. Based on Justin Harding's 2018 short film of the same name, Carved is a campy ode to horror B-movies of the '80s and '90s. A small New England town recovering from a deadly tragedy is suddenly terrorized by a mutated pumpkin that comes to life and embarks on a violent killing spree, which is just as ridiculous as it sounds. Its motivations are simple: kill everyone who mutilated its fellow pumpkin brethren during the annual pumpkin carving contest. The film's narrative is straightforward enough, but the mutant pumpkin's creature design and its creative and vicious kills are what make Carved worth a watch this Halloween.

Warning: spoilers for Hulus Carved.
Hulus dark horror comedy Carved has a one-of-a-kind killer, but despite the silliness of the character and the premise, there are some pretty brutal kills. In 2018, Justin Harding's short film Carved won Huluween's short film festival, and now, six years later, it has a feature-length adaptation. Carved takes viewers back to Halloween 1993, at Cedar Creek Pioneer Village, a living museum in Maine with special activities for everyone to celebrate Halloween, including a stage play and a carving contest.
When a local man finds a strange and unusually big pumpkin, he takes it to the village and his friend decides to use it for the carving contest. However, this turns out to be a mutant pumpkin, and it comes to life during the contest, ready for revenge. The killer pumpkin targets the contestants and proves to be a much smarter and more cruel threat than it seems,...

Justin Harding’s Carved, based on the filmmaker’s 2018 short of the same name, falls victim to typical short-turned-feature issues that Brandon Espy’s Mr. Crocket better sidesteps. It's a bite-sized idea in a king-sized wrapper. Hulu's latest "Huluween" treat is stale, dismissively tropey, and cannot sustain its elongated duration. Save for a smattering of body-hacking practical effects, Carved is an unenthusiastic holiday dud that’s not worth its momentary highlights of violent pumpkin-inflicted punishments.

From its humble beginnings as a short film delighting Halloween fans in 2018, Carved has sprouted into a full-fledged slasher tale that’s sure to satisfy seekers of seasonal scares.
At the helm is writer-director Justin Harding, whose creative killer pumpkin concept makes its grand entrance on Hulu. Transplanting hallowed harvest traditions from five minutes to ninety-four, this feature presentation challenges whether its expanded format can justify stretching such a simple yet splendid setup.
Wrangling a mutation of Mother Nature gone mad, the movie maintains memorable pieces of its short film origins while shaping new story beats around an unforgettable monster.
Set among the quaint charms and characters of a New England village, Carved cultivates an atmosphere ripe with the spirit of the season before darkness descends. When Halloween hijinks turn hellish, our Final Girl and her band of misfits must outwit the outlandish forces that threaten their very insides.

As an archetypal monstrous-pumpkin narrative, Justin Harding’s Carved reiterates the Halloween tale of a revengeful pumpkin in the hot pursuit of the humans that wronged it. The ceaseless killing makes the film a gore fest in a pumpkin fest. However, the humour never fails to announce its presence from time to time. Keeping alive the narrative is the motley of characters that negotiate with the narrative in ways that become humorous. One can however not deny the strand of the standard ‘monster genre’ that underpins the narrative which merits reappraisal.

Warning: spoilers for Hulus Carved.
As part of its Huluween event, Hulu has released the dark comedy horror movie Carved, and while it has many typical horror tropes, it surprisingly ends two of the most tiring ones. Hulus outlandish and super bloody horror comedy Carved may put a temporary hold on those pumpkin pie cravings. Yes, its because the kills are graphic in this Halloween-set romp, but it has more to do with the killer, which in this case, is a sentient mega pumpkin. (Just go with it.) When the first real kills begin to happen around the 20-minute mark, the film doesnt let up. As the groovy bloodbath ensues, heads are severed, scalped, and stabbed by this unlikely killer whose vine-like tentacles reach far and wide. It also allows the big badass pumpkin the ability to walk around. Basically, a pumpkin-led massacre like no other.

Spooky season is just around the corner and Hulu is ready to celebrate once again with its Huluween selection of horror films and shows for the holiday. One of those new films, Carved, is a product of their annual Huluween Film Fest which highlights short horror flicks from up-and-coming filmmakers. Fangoria shared the first images from the feature-length production spawned from the original short by director Justin Harding, which sees a group of teens facing off against a vengeful pumpkin monster and getting covered in plenty of practical blood and jack-o-lantern guts in the process. Starring Prom Pact's Peyton Elizabeth Lee, the creepy comedy will make its way to Hulu on October 21.

This post contains spoilers for "Thanksgiving."
Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" is a mean, lean slasher that ramps up on the gore and goes all out on the humor. While the kills are stylishly excessive, and the central mystery is perfectly paced, the film's most dramatically shocking aspect is its extended opening scene that depicts a Black Friday sale gone wrong. Right after the central group of characters — who are all unlikeable to a certain extent, yet not completely irredeemable — are introduced, they unwittingly trigger a stampede-slash-massacre at a local store holding a Black Friday sale. While the situation starts with an overexcited crowd hell-bent on hogging up products at low prices, things escalate when the crowd cascades inside the store, leading to several people being heavily injured or instantly dead.
There is a deliberate kernel of dark humor embedded within this sequence, coupled with a blunt look into mindless consumerism...

Making Monsters, the horror flick from co-directors Justin Harding and Rob Brunner is coming to digital platforms in the U.S. on March 26th. A social media prankster and his fiancee find their idyllic country weekend turn into the ultimate video prank, where the stakes are life and death. Samuel Goldwyn Films is handling the release of Making Monsters in the States and they released a new trailer today. Though I hardly think paying any attention to a YouTuber prankster is worth any of my time there is some very good and creepy stuff going on here. A couple stills were also sents along and one does give reason for me never to take a bath again. The announcement follows. Samuel Goldwyn Films...

Given its title, and considering two of the main characters have made their small fortune exploiting the public's desire to laugh at other people's fear only to seemingly have the tables turned on them by a supposed "fan", one could be forgiven for thinking Making Monsters would be a deep and heavy film about the price of fame. Instead, writer Justin Harding, who co-directed the film with Rob Brunner, wisely keeps it relatively light and tight in this horror film that manages to somehow feel fresh while combining many familiar tropes of the genre to make for an entertaining and creepy feature film debut for the Canadian filmmakers.
