The 2024 Emmy nominations made waves this week, with The Bear breaking records alongside Carol Burnett, Nava Mau, Steve Martin and more.
This year, FX’s The Bear broke the record for the most nominations for a comedy series, earning 23 nods for the show’s second season. The milestone comes after the series set the record at last year’s ceremony (held in January due to strike delays) for the most awards won by a debut season, at 10.
The show’s network, FX, also had reason to celebrate this week, setting a record for itself with 93 nominations.
Elsewhere on the awards docket, many celebrated their first-ever nomination, including The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas and others broke their own records, while more set new ones.
The 2024 Emmys will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt on ABC. Click here for the complete list of nominees.

Thirty-four performers across diverse backgrounds received Primetime Emmy nominations today which is even with last year when the Television Academy recognized the same number of nominees in the acting and reality hosting categories.
This year’s count remains above the 2019 low of 26 non-Caucasian actors and reality hosts, yet still far from 2021’s record 49 nominees.
The biggest gain this year was with indigenous performers with Under the Bridge‘s Lily Gladstone and True Detective: Night Country‘s Kali Reis both nominated in the category of Supporting Actress Limited Series, Anthology or Movie.
Also breaking through is Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai who landed a nom in Comedy Series Lead Actor. The Oji-Cree First Nations and Guyanese actor portrays Bear Smallhill on the FX series, which finally landed a Best Comedy Series nod after three years on the air; the show ultimately ending. The 2024 Emmy nominations are out, and this year’s slate of nominees has a solid showing for Asian American, Latino, Indigenous, and LGBTQ representation in the acting categories.
This year, with 96 acting slots up for grabs, there is an increase in the number of people of color nominated across all acting categories, with 30 recognized. Last year’s crop of nominees included 25 people of color. In 2022, 42 people of color were nominated in the acting categories (30 in main and 12 in guest); in 2021, 25 were nominated (19 in main and six in guest).

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.

Exclusive: Apple TV+’s The Morning Show has added Aaron Pierre to its Season 4 cast in a major recurring role. Production on the drama is currently underway.
Pierre will play ‘Miles,’ an acclaimed visual artist who moves through the circles of the New York elite.
The Morning Show explores the cutthroat world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning. Season 3 left the fate of Uba once again up in the air after Alex (Jennifer Aniston) manages to take down Paul Marks (Jon Hamm) by logjamming the sale of Uba to his tech company, Hyperion. But now, it appears Uba will be merging with another media company to keep the network afloat, which could spell layoffs and restructuring in Season 4.
Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee and Nicole Beharie also star.

Earlier this year, “Succession” garnered a whopping 15 Primetime Emmy nominations: a bid for Best Drama Series and 14 for acting. The HBO show from Jesse Armstrong became not just the most-nominated drama of the year but the most recognized show that year, while the 14 acting bids tied its own record from the previous year.
But how about this year? Does any show have a chance of getting close to the dizzying heights of “Succession?” Well, probably not. But we’ve combed through our odds chart to work out which of the shows in contention for Emmy nominations will garner the most bids. We’re going to go through drama, comedy, and limited series/TV movie separately and here we’ll start with drama. Below, we ranked our predicted Best Drama Series nominees in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

Kanopy, the no-fee/ad-free movie streaming service available through local libraries, colleges, universities and other institutions, has released the list of its Most-Watched Films of 2024 Midyear and ranked the Top 10 most-watched Kanopy films in the United States. Topping the crop is the Celine Song-directed Oscar nominee “Past Lives” from 2023, with the 2023 Ben Kingsley-starrer “Jules” coming in second and “Golda” (also from 2023) featuring Helen Mirren as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir ranking third.
See‘Past Lives’ star Greta Lee is standout on ‘The Morning Show’
In all, perhaps unsurprisingly, eight of the 10 most-streamed films of 2024 were released in 2023. The others, in order, are:
4. “The Royal Hotel” (2023)
5. “Punch-Drunk Love” (2002)
6. “”Sometimes I Think About Dying”(2023)
7. “BlackBerry” (2023)
8. “Talk to Me” (2023)
9. “She Came to Me” (2023)
10. “Dial M for Murder” (1954).

When Nicole Holofcener was coming up in the ’90s, she was celebrated as that rare thing: a female writer-director. Today, she’s no longer a rarity, and she’s still delivering sharp, funny observational comedies about flawed middle-class New York women. But somehow, the breadth and potential of her talent remains elusive.
Hollywood gives her scripts to write and rewrite and polish (for the big bucks). She wrote, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, “The Last Duel” for Ridley Scott, crafting the Jodie Comer character, and the Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh roles in Marvel’s “Black Widow.” She made more on that three-week assignment than three of her movies combined, she said at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which tributed her this year, playing three of her films for an audience unfamiliar with her work. She’s currently writing for Gillian Anderson and Greta Lee in Disney’s latest iteration of “Tron.

“The Morning Show” is about to get a lot more louche.
Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s hit drama series for Season 4, the streaming service announced Tuesday.
Irons will play Martin Levy, the father of Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston). According to TVLine, the character is described as “a charming, sharp, deep-thinking man with a sense of humor. And, in what has probably not been super fun for Alex her entire life, Martin pulls no emotional punches.” In other words, a perfect role for Jeremy Irons. He is expected to appear in approximately six episodes of Season 4.
Irons is the second Academy Award winner recently added to the cast of “The Morning Show;” Marion Cotillard is joining the series as a French businesswoman named Celine Dumont. Before Irons was cast, it was reported Oscar winner Kevin Kline had been approached for the part as well.

Apple TV+ is adding another high-profile actor to The Morning Show.
Oscar and Emmy winner Jeremy Irons is joining the show’s cast for its upcoming fourth season. He’ll play Martin Levy, the father of Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy. It will be his first TV role since Netflix’s The Pentaverate in 2022.
Irons joins Marion Cotillard as a newcomer to The Morning Show’s cast for season four. The coming season will jump ahead two years from the season three finale cliffhanger that saw Alex’s fellow TV anchor Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) taken into FBI custody.
“We re-enter the world mid-chaos,” Aniston, who’s also an executive producer, told The Hollywood Reporter after season three ended. “Because [Alex is] jumping into something that has never existed. She’s a bit of a pioneer, and she is kind of left alone on a buoy.”
Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Néstor Carbonell, Karen Pittman,...

The Morning Show is adding a second Oscar winner to its Season 4 cast. Jeremy Irons has been tapped for a major role on the Apple TV+ drama. He will play Martin Levy, Alex Levy’s (Jennifer Aniston) father. Irons joins fellow new Season 4 cast addition Marion Cotillard.
The Levy family drama that Martin’s arrival is bound to bring will likely compound the headache Alex is facing at work as she grapples with the aftermath from the thwarted Uba sale to Paul Marks’s (Jon Hamm) tech company and a potential merger with rival network Nbn.
From stars/executive producers Aniston and Reese Witherspoon and Media Res, The Morning Show explores the cutthroat world of morning news. The ensemble drama also stars Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Hamm and Nicole Beharie. Julianna Margulies will not be returning next season.

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.
If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.
As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...

Exclusive: Greta Lee is the latest to join the growing ensemble for Kathryn Bigelow’s next film at Netflix. The untitled thriller also stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris and Gabriel Basso. Bigelow will direct. Netflix had no comment on the casting.
The film’s title and plot remain under wraps, though sources have told Deadline that it will be set at the White House as a national crisis unfolds. The project marks Bigelow’s first feature since the 2017 thriller Detroit, an awards contender produced and distributed by Annapurna Pictures, which starred John Boyega, Will Poulter, Kaitlyn Dever and more.
Lee is coming off a big year which included reprising her scene-stealing role in the third season of Apple’s The Morning Show as well as her critically acclaimed performance in A24’s Past Lives. The role earned her a ton of accolades including a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards nomination.

The Apple TV+ drama series “Sugar” has provided a showcase for a number of its stars, with the cast led by Colin Farrell but also including terrific turns from the likes of James Cromwell and Amy Ryan.
The neo-noir detective drama follows Farrell as a private investigator who searches for the missing granddaughter of a Hollywood producer. Created by “Thor” and “I Am Legend” screenwriter Mark Protosevich, the series is an homage-filled thriller that updates and pays dividends to the noir detective genre. Ryan shines in her role as Melanie Matthews, who used to be the step-daughter of the missing Olivia and develops something of a relationship with Farrell’s detective. Ryan, who younger viewers will mostly recognize from her days in “The Office,” demonstrates her impressive versatility as a performer here, as noted by critics.

The Morning Show has a knack for writing itself into a corner. “It requires a lot of junk food to manage the stress,” says executive producer Charlotte Stoudt. “Part of me was like, ‘Who is that season three showrunner? I have a few words for her!’”
As said season three showrunner, Stoudt is joking. She’s now running her second writers room for the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series, which will shoot its fourth season this summer. “We’re still writing, still breaking story. We’re very much in the middle of it,” she says, thinking back to where she left her characters in the season three finale, and adds with a laugh, “We caused ourselves a lot of problems.”
The WGA Award-winning writer (Fosse/Verdon, Homeland, House of Cards) took over the showrunning reins in 2022 from Kerry Ehrin, who developed and ran the first two seasons. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon...

Peter Dinklage became a force to be reckoned with at the Emmys during his tenure as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” with the actor winning four wins from eight nominations. The cast of “Game of Thrones” was so good, however, that many of them are still Emmys forces even after the show ended and they’ve moved on to different projects. Let’s take a look at the “Game of Thrones” alumni who could compete at this year’s Emmys.

When The Morning Show returns for Season 4, it’ll do so without former series regular Julianna Margulies, our sister site Variety reports.
Margulies joined The Morning Show in Season 2 as Laura Peterson, a TV news anchor who became romantically involved with Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson. Despite the two ending their relationship in Season 3, Laura remained in Bradley’s orbit for the duration of her time on the show. That will no longer be the case moving forward.

Julianna Margulies will not be returning to Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” for Season 4.
Sources tell Variety that the decision was made before the controversy stirred by a podcast that featured Margulies last year, and that she was offered a one-episode appearance in Season 4 that she turned down. The sources also say she has been asked about her interest in returning for a potential fifth season.
Margulies joined “The Morning Show” in Season 2 as journalist Laura Peterson, who becomes Bradley Jackson’s (Reese Witherspoon) love interest; the two break up early in Season 3, though Laura’s arc continues through the remaining episodes.
In November, while discussing the war in Gaza, Margulies made derogatory comments about Black and LGBTQ people, including that lesbian critics of Israel “offended [her] as a lesbian” since she played one on “The Morning Show.” She subsequently apologized for her remarks.
