Through the late 2000s and the early 2010s, author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" book series was a force to be reckoned with. Told from the perspective of middle-schooler Greg Heffley, readers would peruse Greg's illustrated journal entries documenting his misadventures with his family, his best friend Rowley Jefferson, and his eccentric classmates. Greg is many young readers' first unreliable protagonist. Although Kinney does not believe Greg is a sociopath, the character exhibits a surprising amount of narcissism for a teenager, often taking advantage of his family and friends if it serves his interests in becoming rich and famous -- even if his schemes usually blow up in his face to comical effect.
Jeff Kinney's knack for writing and illustrating humorous yet relatable middle school experiences has hooked readers and viewers alike. With 19 books published and over 290 million copies sold, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid...

Adapting the words from a novel or the enticing action from a comic book is not an easy task. However, when it works, the appeal it has to the already-established fanbase only increases while also bringing new ones to the table. Young adult adaptions have been among the most popular of them all, ultimately changing the business of entertainment for a younger audience.
Among successful comic book adaptations is the funny and awkward stick figure book about growing up: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney. The author drew from his own story growing up to create the comic, and maybe that is why it is so appealing. Here is the background behind the large franchise, why it is so popular, and upcoming projects.

Batman fans have argued for decades over who was the best actor to play The Dark Knight. But what about the performers who portrayed Bruce Wayne as a boy? Batman wouldn't be Batman without witnessing his parents' murder, so audiences have been subjected to that event again and again. While it might seem repetitive to viewers, it means they've also had a chance to see multiple child actors tackle the role. However, that raises the question: Who were those young actors, and whatever happened to these little Caped Crusaders?
The history of seeing Bruce Wayne as a child onscreen dates back to 1985, when B.J. Ward pulled double duty as both Wonder Woman and a young Bruce, as Adam West's Batman remembered his parents' death in the Super Friends episode "The Fear." However, due to the recent explosion of DC animated content in the past 15 years, this article will limit...

Tignhari’s voice actor in Genshin Impact has been recast, and a new name to give the character life has officially been revealed. The original actor, Elliot Gindi, was accused of abuse, and developer HoYoverse has since announced that he would be replaced in his role as the leader of the Forest Rangers in Avidya Forest.
Tighnari was the first 5-star Dendro character to be added to Collei and, in fact, one of the first Dendro characters ever, along with Collei and the Dendro version of the Traveler. He has an important role in Sumeru’s overarching storyline, and also plays a minor part in other activities, as seen in Genshin Impact 3.5’s Windblume’s Festival event, for instance. Now, all the voicelines for the character will be replaced by those of Tighnari’s new voice actor in Genshin Impact.

"All they wanted... was a killer night out." Oh what a tagline. Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Dreamcatcher, not to be confused with the other horror film also titled Dreamcatcher from 2003. This new horror film centers on two estranged sisters who, along with their friends, become entrenched in a 48 hour whirlwind of violence & chaos after a traumatic experience at an underground dance music festival. Sounds intense. The film's cast includes Niki Koss, Zachary Gordon, Travis Burns, Blaine Kern III, Olivia Sui, Emrhys Cooper, Elizabeth Posey, Nazanin Mandi, Adrienne Wilkinson, and Lou Ferrigno Jr. This looks absolutely ridiculous, a strange rip-off of Scream using the Phantom of the Paradise mask set at a rave. Even worse this film just doesn't fit in with the times. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jacob Johnston's Dreamcatcher, direct from YouTube: Dylan, known...

It looked like the movie business was making strides toward something resembling normalcy in recent weeks. Yet, that seems impossible now as Regal cinemas is closing its doors again. AMC and Cinemark will try to weather the storm but, for many of us, it's still streaming time. Luckily, there is no shortage of options for those in need of a new movie to watch this weekend.
This week sees the release of Adam Sandler's new Halloween movie on Netflix, as well as several other horror movies, including the latest from Jim Cummings. We also have a new American Pie movie, an alien invasion comedy and a movie about teenagers spontaneously combusting. Here are this week's streaming selections.

It’s hard to believe that American Pie arrived over twenty years ago as it seems like just yesterday that we were all listening to wild band camp stories and getting hilarious advice from Jim’s awkward father. Over two decades later, the iconic R-rated comedy has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and inspired tons of other comedies, but as of yet, we’re still left waiting for a proper American Pie 5.
Whether or not the fifth installment ever happens remains to be seen, of course, but in the meantime, the brand is continuing to pump out spinoffs and the latest is American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules. While not quite a proper fifth entry in the main series, this is the first entry of any kind in the franchise in nearly a decade. It is the first in the direct-to-video "presents" series since 2009's The Book of Love. In this case, we have a female-centric story, which the studio has promised will be making its way to Netflix soon. As we can see in the trailer, it looks very much in line with previous spin-offs released over the years.
The trailer reveals a group of girls who are having issues with their love lives. They make a pact to repair this, leading to a series of hijinks. A lot of focus is put on the fact that this is flipping the script, making it about the girls instead of the guys. The plot feels...

Disney+ finally launched in the UK during the last week of March with a fairly robust library that included a massive collection of The Simpsons from its recently-acquired Fox catalogue, but there was a little rough with the smooth, as the streaming service decided to include just two episodes of its flagship Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian, and there were some clear discrepancies between the bonuses of being a Us and UK subscriber – there hasn’t yet been a peep out of Disney+ on the whereabouts of Frozen 2, nor has there yet been any news of a premiere date for Pixar’s Onward or Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Also in the wind is the possibility that Marvel’s Black Widow, which has been removed from the theatrical release schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic, might end up streaming on Disney+. As it stands, this...

Exclusive: Jason Dohring and Zachary Gordon are set to appear opposite Olivia Munn, Justin Theroux and Luke Bracey in Justine Bateman’s indie drama feature Violet.
It centers on a rising film executive (Munn) who lives according to the Voice (Theroux) in her head, until unexpectedly realizing the truth – it’s been lying about everything.
The Veronica Mars Dohring star will play Harry White, a partner at Phoenix Circle Films who has a strong and productive filmmaking relationship with Violet, having funded many of her films. Gordon, also known for starring in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, will play Bradley, a young film executive who’s accustomed to other people doing his work — which means his boss, Violet, picks up his slack.
Bateman is producing the pic under her Section 5 banner with Michael Jones and Larry Hummel. Cassian Elwes and Matt Paul are the executive producers.

A fourth big-screen outing for the amiable family franchise features a new cast but it’s run out of fun
Faced with ageing or refusenik performers, the amiable family franchise’s fourth big-screen outing elects for ruthless, root-and-branch recasting. Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott are new and 33% blander as the Heffley elders, while Jason Drucker succeeds Zachary Gordon as eponymous weakling Greg, here caught plotting to reroute the clan’s road trip towards a much-anticipated gaming expo. Returning director David Bowers gives it sporadic pep: there’s a fun Psycho homage, and CGI projectile vomit. Elsewhere the books’ stick-figure illustrations get converted into banal, overlit, primetime sitcom images, and the endless off-route wheelspinning makes that subtitle lamentably apt. For once, it’ll be the grownups asking the kids: “Are we there yet?”

As expected, Marvel's box office blockbuster sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had no trouble taking care of business in its first two weeks at the box office. In its third frame this weekend, though, it was expected to be a close race between Guardians 2 and 20th Century Fox's Alien: Covenant, and this weekend's box office race most certainly delivered. It was in fact a very close race, with Alien: Covenant coming out on top with $36 million, with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 following close behind with $35 million. Since these movies are so close together, it's possible that they could swap spots on the charts when the actual numbers are released.
This opening weekend tally is far below the $51 million debut of 2012's Prometheus, with this Alien prequel, set 10 years after the events of Prometheus. The prequel Prometheus was see as quite the disappointment to many fans ,but Alien: Covenant...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, and to paraphrase those renowned seventies scholars the Brady Bunch, “When it’s time to change then it’s time to change.”
While I’ve tried my hardest to slowly sneak those changes in, it’s gotten to the point where we’ll need to do something more drastic if the few of you reading the Weekend Warrior on a weekly basis actually want it to remain coming to you on a weekly basis. Because of that, we’re going to try something different by not throwing in as much independent limited releases for those checking the column out, and making the column a little more focused at least for the time being. (I’m probably going to move reviews for my Top Picks over to my blog, which is easy enough to...

Marvel's blockbuster sequel Guardians of the Galaxy 2 had no trouble destroying its box office competition last weekend with $65.2 million, up slightly over the Sunday estimate of $63 million, and posting a 55.5% decrease from last weekend's $145 million debut. The sequel wasn't given any real competition by the underperforming Snatched ($19.5 million) and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ($15.3 million), but this weekend, it faces its toughest challenge yet, with 20th Century Fox's Alien: Covenant, along with the studio's family-friendly sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Warner Bros.' Everything, Everything. We're predicting that the R-rated Alien: Covenant should have no trouble taking the top spot this weekend, with an estimated $39.6 million.
This figure does come in far below the $51 million debut of 2012's Prometheus, but there are a number of factors as to why it may come in below its predecessor. Prometheus was seen as quite the disappointment...

After a five-year break, the Heffley family is back in action — although with a completely different cast playing them — in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the fourth feature taken from Jeff Kinney’s highly relatable series of cartoon novels chronicling the life of a hapless middle schooler.
The hiatus after 2012’s Dog Days effectively aged out original lead Zachary Gordon (now 19), as well as his big brother/tormentor played by Devon Bostick (now 25), and while they were cleaning house, the producers also sent original parents Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris packing. 20th Century Fox has debuted the first teaser trailer and poster for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, which is set to hit theaters on May 19. This trailer pokes some fun at the superhero genre, in its own unique way, teasing that none of the caped crusaders, galactic guardians or amazing web slingers over the past decade dared to be "wimpy" like the title character Greg, portrayed by Jason Drucker. This trailer gives fans a better look at the brand new cast that has been assembled for this fourth Wimpy Kid movie.
Back in November, 20th Century Fox unveiled a preview that gave fans a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the new cast members, who replace all of the stars from the first three Wimpy Kid movies. Jason Drucker replaces Zachary Gordon as Greg, with Charlie Wright replacing Devon Bostick as his older brother Rodrick and Owen Asztalos replacing Robert Capron as Rowley.

Jason Ian Drucker ("Every Witch Way") and Owen Asztalos ("Paterson") have been cast as the young leads of a reboot of "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" franchise in the works at Fox and Color Force.
David Bowers, who helmed two of the three previous live-action films which ran from 2010 to 2012, is returning to direct the new feature based on Jeff Kinney's series of books - more specifically the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" title.
Drucker will replace Zachary Gordon as the main character Greg Heffley who convinces his family to embark on a summer road trip to attend Meemaw's 90th birthday - so he can secretly attend what he thinks is a nearby gamer convention. But the diversion takes them wildly off course, and Greg must figure out how to get his family back on track.
Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing.

There’s something freeing in knowing that you won’t have to feel conflicted about reviewing something, in this case Dead of Summer. Sure, I’ll probably find a few enjoyable morsels here and there about this show but overall, these recaps are just going to be one big roast. Episode 2 recap begins below, and it’s a doozy. You can watch along on Hulu or on the official Freeform website, if you’re feeling masochistic.
First, let me just say that this episode title is the kind of pseudo-Stephen King nonsense I was hoping this series wouldn’t devolve into. The unending parade of pop culture references of the first episode should’ve raised red flags all over the place and naming the first episode after a GnR track was precocious enough but This is out of hand.
Anyway, the episode starts with a flashback, as usual, dating...

A lot about Freeform’s new mystery/thriller Dead of Summer bathes in overkill ’80s camp in the best ways possible. The music is synth-heavy and obnoxious to just the right extent, the setting is ominously idyllic, and its characters rock their mysterious backstories as much as their tubular nicknames (“Cricket” and “Blotter,” for starters). The show’s cheesy thrills, wherein rodents and “innocent” counselors sub in for jump scares 100% of the time every time, are just energetic and economical enough to wrap you up in a script that, unfortunately, shows its tween-friendly Freeform-ness more often than not.
And that’s where Dead of Summer stalls; creators Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis, and Ian Goldberg have worked on Once Upon A Time (the latter two on Lost, so keep an eye out for the Apollo bar) for years now, and they weave together main...
