"Our priority is protecting the men and women who serve this country!" The Avenue has debuted another red band official trailer for Land of Bad, landing in theaters nationwide in one week. It's the latest movie from talented filmmaker Will Eubank, of The Signal, Underwater, and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. "When sh*t goes down in the jungle, there's one team for the job." When a Delta Force team is ambushed in enemy territory, a rookie officer played by the other brother Liam Hemsworth refuses to abandon them. Their only hope lies with an Air Force drone pilot as the eyes in the sky during a brutal 48-hour battle for survival in the jungle. Russell Crowe co-stars as the drone pilot, with a cast including Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, Milo Ventimiglia, Daniel MacPherson, Gunner Wright, and Lincoln Lewis. This actually looks like it has some kick ass action scenes in it,...

2023 was one hell of a year for games. The sky was the limit when it came to diverse releases. It was also a year of innovation. Whether it be revisiting a classic and updating it for modern audiences, fixing broken promises with grand reworkings, or delivering unique experiences.
This year is honestly one I’ll never forget and I was honored to bring you constant reviews of the latest releases. The time has come now to recognize the ones that stood out most to me; the best of the best. The cream of the crop. These are the top 10 best games of the year.
10) RoboCop: Rogue City
Robocop: Rogue City is by no means a perfect game. A lot of the mechanics are shallow. The gameplay gets repetitive. The small open hubs aren’t too explorable. Some of the writing is shoddy. So why is it on this list? Well,...

"I am your eyes in the sky, and the bringer of doom." The Avenue has revealed their official trailer for a jingoistic action thriller called Land of Bad, which is a pretty catchy title for this one. First announced back in May, Feardemic’s voting for the Horror Game Awards is now open for you, the fans, to decide the best of 2022’s crop of horror video games. It’s up to you to decide who receives Golden Bats in each of the 13 categories between all of your favorite games.
The Horror Game Awards are part of Feardemic’s horror extravaganza, Fear Fest, which is being run in partnership with IGN, and will take place on September 6th & 7th. The event will showcase the most anticipated horror games coming your way for the latter half of 2023 and into 2024, plus “a ton of indie horror” from indie publishers.
The next night will see Feardemic and IGN present the Horror Game Awards, celebrating the best horror games of 2022, and honoring the developers who made them. That does not, however, mean that you have months to cast your votes, because...

While the Dead Space remake remains mostly faithful to the 2008 original, EA Motive's remake introduces a number of key changes, one of the best of which relates to weapons. Returning protagonist Isaac Clarke (played by Gunner Wright) to the original Dead Space's Usg Ishimura, Dead Space retells the original's story with updated graphics, redone voice acting, and a few revamped mechanics.
Although many of the original's most important features are preserved in Dead Space, the remake also makes a number of important changes to some aspects of the 2008 game that are more outdated. Isaac Clarke, for example, receives full voice acting in the Dead Space remake, contrasting with the original game's silent protagonist and matching up better to the fully-voiced Isaac of Dead Space 2 and 3. Aside from changes to visuals and story, however, Dead Space also makes a few mechanical changes that serve the game very well - in particular,...

Back in 2008 when the original Dead Space was released, players were almost immediately enamored with its action-inspired gameplay, space horror setting, and next-generation technology that elevated the experience to a level never seen before. It’s a game whose legacy lives on and has yet to be replicated properly even by its own sequels that eventually lost sight of what made the original game so great. After the disappointment that was Dead Space 3 was released in 2013 and the closure of original developing studio Visceral Games in 2017, the series lay dormant. So in 2021, when EA announced that a full remake was in development from Motive Studios (the same studio behind the underrated Star Wars: Squadrons), many were taken by surprise.
Could Dead Space be relevant in a very different landscape of horror games? Would a remake even work? How faithful does the remake need to be to capture that same feeling of the original?...

2022 was a great year for gaming, all things considered. From seeing Supermassive finally break away from their Dark Pictures Anthology with The Quarry, to Resident Evil: Village finally delivering on its Dlc promise, to the long-awaited Dead Space successor The Callisto Protocol finally being released, horror in particular had a pretty eventful year.
2023 is shaping up to be another landmark year in the world of video gaming. To help cut through the noise, here’s a list of the horror games we’re looking most forward to in 2023!
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse – March 9th, 2023
Fatal Frame is one of the most undersung franchises in all of horror gaming. The second installment, Crimson Butterfly, is a game I consider to be an absolute masterpiece in the execution of horrific storytelling and gameplay. 2022 wasn't the most eventful when it came to horror titles, but 2023, on the other hand, looks to change that entirely. From remakes of timeless classics, to brand-new titles that could make some serious waves in the industry, horror fans might want to mark their calendars for these upcoming releases. They might also want to prepare their stomachs, though, as these 2023 horror games look to be scarily good.
The few horrors that did make an appearance in 2022, however, didn't disappoint. The Mortuary Assistant came out of the left field, providing completely unique gameplay that was surprisingly well-executed by its single developer. Scorn's eight-year-long development cycle was put to an end with its October release, and it proved that the wait had been worth it with phenomenal art direction. Although few and far between, the best horror games of 2022 lived up to fans' expectations; but 2023 promises to be even better with its exciting and scary releases.

Listening to the audio commentary to Underwater, you can hear director William Eubank gush about the set design, the costumes, the creature effects, the title sequence, and so on, and you realize it’s about all that and not the story and characters. Any time you take your eye off the story and characters, you’re in trouble.
Underwater, out now from 20th Century Home Entertainment, is a complete misfire of a horror thriller, effectively remaking Alien and setting it under the sea. It wastes an engaging enough cast anchored by Kristen Stewart, looking as fetching in her underwear as Sigourney Weaver did, and never builds enough original suspense to be worth sitting through.
She plays Norah, a mechanical engineer deep down in a corporate mining facility and of course, the corporation has ignored warnings of strange sightings, leaving the small crew vulnerable. So of course, things go wrong, one after the other,...

Fresh off a Golden Globe win for Best Picture, Sam Mendes’ and Universal’s war epic “1917” earned $3.25 million in box office previews from 2,900 on Thursday as the film expands into wide release on 3,434 North American screens this weekend.
So far the movie has earned an estimated $5.97 million at the box office after opening in limited release on Christmas Day. It opens wide against Warner Bros.’ “Just Mercy,” which also expanded after a holiday limited opening, as well as 2020 new releases “Like a Boss” from Paramount and “Underwater” from Disney and Fox.
“1917” is projected to earn between $20-25 million at the box office, and it should be enough to topple “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” from the top spot.
Set during the first World War, “1917” stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as two soldiers tasked to deliver a message to a battalion to call off an attack that will lead them,...

There’s a really strong film to be made with the exact same subject matter as Underwater. In fact, it’s hard to argue that they could have cast it any better, either, as Kristen Stewart is a rock solid central force. However, in a rush to get to the monster movie aspect of the tale, the flick forgets to really invest you in the characters. So, when the terror begins, there’s no real sense of worry for the humans. When it’s focusing on surviving a disaster and the issues with being that deep under the sea, there’s something interesting here. When things begin going bump in the dark, however, it begins to sink. Opening this week, Underwater is a missed opportunity. The movie is a combination of action and horror, filtered through the lens of a survival tale. Taking place deep down by the ocean’s floor,...

They say in space no one can hear you scream, but what about beneath seven miles of water?
In 20th Century Fox’s upcoming horror film “Underwater,” Kristen Stewart tries to escape evil forces not from the depths of the galaxy but at the bottom of the ocean. The cast’s futuristic diving bells still look a lot like space suits, however, giving William Eubank’s film a haunting “Alien” vibe even thousands of leagues under the sea.
Stewart stars alongside T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr. Jessica Henwick, Mamoudou Athie and Gunner Wright as part of a team of researchers who scramble for their survival after an earthquake ravages their ship.

"We drilled into the bottom of the ocean, and we don't know what came out." Fox has launched the first official trailer for an action-thriller titled Underwater, which is indeed set underwater. It's about a crew of underwater researchers who must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their big subterranean laboratory. Sounds a bit like The Abyss, but without the military men. Underwater is the next film from the director of the impressive indie sci-fi The Signal, named William Eubank, which we were big fans of back in 2014. His new film stars Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr., Jessica Henwick, Mamoudou Athie, and Gunner Wright. This trailer undoubtedly seems to hint at some alien creature or something creepy that has emerged from the depths. The final shots definitely got my attention. Whenever a horror movie gets funded on Kickstarter, we make it a point to cover the flick immediately, if only to show you guys just what you paid for. Case in point: Robert A. Palmer's I Am Alone.
In the flick a survival reality TV crew (including “Torchwood’s” Gareth David-Lloyd) and their cameraman (Gunner Wright) witness the spread of a zombie-like virus that turns the living into the living dead.

Jacob Fitts, television host and survivalist, with his crew - producer Adam Levine and cameraman Mason Riley - set out to shoot another episode of their popular survival show, I Am Alone. Episode 113 takes us deep into the Colorado Rockies, where Jacob will be left alone for 7 days while his team sets off into town to capture footage and shoot interviews. Taking on a low-budget existential sci-fi epic might seem like a big task for a young, up-and-coming director, but that is exactly what Us cinematographer (and now filmmaker) William Eubank did with his feature debut, Love (2011). The film sees an astronaut cut off from the world aboard the International Space Station, left with nothing but the odd bit of radio static for company, and features an engaging turn from American actor Gunner Wright. Taking influence from the work of Stanley Kubrick and Duncan Jones, Eubank could well be one to watch. So, it was with great pleasure then that this week CineVue got the chance to speak to Eubank ahead of the film's DVD and Blu-ray release.

This film may be technically accomplished, but it seems like an 80-minute pop video in tribute to Stanley Kubrick
With a musical score supplied by the Us band Angels & Airwaves, this sci-fi meditation from 29-year-old debutant director William Eubank is a technically accomplished but stiflingly reverential homage to Stanley Kubrick. It often seems like an 80-minute pop video with a 2001 gimmick. There's a "pre-history" sequence: not apes, but soldiers in the Us civil war who make a strange discovery. Then we rocket forward centuries to a lone spaceman, Captain Lee Miller (Gunner Wright), in a cramped craft, who receives a disturbingly curt message from Houston. He's on his own. Panic is succeeded by existential horror and hallucinations that somehow trigger a kind of leap to a new consciousness, and we loop in the civil–war discovery. Technically proficient, good-looking – but what's the point?

An enterprising, depressive sci-fi movie in the meditative mode of La Jetée, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris. An astronaut (Gunner Wright), stranded on a space station he's sent to repair, discovers the American civil war-era journal of a Union army officer containing a report on a strange craft landing during a battle. The astronaut goes gradually insane after seven years alone in space as the world beneath drifts into chaos. It was made on an ultra-low budget put up by the rock group Angels & Airwaves, and writer-director William Eubank built his own backyard set using material retrieved from garbage dumps.

Anna Karenina (12A)
(Joe Wright, 2012, UK/Fra) Keira Knightley, Kelly Macdonald, Jude Law, 130 mins
Bringing period drama up-to-date, Wright's radical reinterpretation of Tolstoy's tragedy stages the action almost entirely in a theatre – backstage areas, red curtains and all. It's a smart framing device for the Imperial Russia on display, even if the stylisation puts emotion at a slight remove, not helped by the love-or-loathe leads. But it's still a sight to behold, with rich colours, doll's-house sets and costumes to die for (spoiler alert!).
Dredd (18)

Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar Henry Cavill/Tarsem Singh Immortals May Reach $38m: Box Office At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart on Friday, Clint Eastwood's J. Comparisons to Gus Van Sant's Milk, which were possible on Wednesday, become trickier at this stage. Written by J. Made for a reported $20m, Milk went on to gross only $31.84m at the domestic box office; J. Edgar...

Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, Judi Dench as Anne Marie Hoover, J. Edgar Jack And Jill/Adam Sandler in Drag: Second-Lowest-Grossing Sandler Comedy in Past Five Years? According to unproven — and quite possibly unfounded — rumors, FBI emperor J. Edgar Hoover enjoyed wearing some nice-fitting dresses every now and then. Ironically, this weekend the all-powerful Hoover will surely be beaten at the Us/Canada box office by another cross-dresser: Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill. How the mighty have fallen. At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar will likely rake in $10-$12 million for the weekend after grossing $3.5-$4 million on Friday. Even if the Hoover biopic reaches $12 million, that means an acceptable — though hardly very promising — $6,312 average at 1,901 locations. (Deadline has $13 million for the weekend, but that could be a typo, unless Warner Bros. is expecting the adult-oriented J. Edgar...

Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar grossed $52,645 according to Box Office Mojo. The Warner Bros. release starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI honcho and Armie Hammer as his intimate "friend" Clyde Tolson is currently screening at seven locations. The film's average was a not-too-impressive $7,571 per theater. For comparison's sake: on November 26, 2008, Gus Van Sant's Milk, another biopic about a gay figure written by J. Edgar screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, collected $268k at 34 locations, averaging $7,897 (about $9,150 today) per site. Remember that all things being equal, the lower the number of theaters, the higher the per-theater average should be. In other words, Milk had a considerably stronger first-day opening than J. Edgar. But then again, Milk opened the day before the Thanksgiving holiday; that could have made a difference. Milk, which stars Sean Penn as slain gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, went on...

Love
Directed by William Eubank
2011, USA, 85 minutes
Invariably, a few other movies come to mind when describing Love. Solaris. Moon. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Love certainly evokes a fair share of science fiction heavy-hitters. It looks, sounds, and feels beautiful. The cinematography is dispassionate but entrancing. The music, by Angels & Airwaves (who also produced the film) is rich and ambitious. Love certainly has the feel of an epic film—but is that enough to make it epic?
The question director William Eubank is asking, “Is our history worth remembering?” certainly has the pedigree for a science fiction epic. Though most of the film is concerned with astronaut Lee Miller (Gunner Wright), who is stranded on the International Space Station after a terrible but mysterious apocalyptic event on earth cuts him off, it begins with (and occasionally returns to) the Us Civil War and Union soldier Captain Lee Briggs (Bradley Horne). It seems like odd juxtaposition,...

Cinematographer William Eubank made his writing and directing debut earlier this year with Love (aka Angels & Airwaves Presents Love), a late addition to this year's Fantastic Fest lineup. Eubank was joined on the red carpet on Wednesday by executive producer Thomas DeLonge and lead actor Gunner Wright. The filmmakers were caught by a surprise special guest: Richard Garriott, real-life astronaut and star of Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission, who moderated an engaging Q&A after the Fantastic Fest screening.
Love is an inspirational and lovely cinematic journey into the past and future. After losing contact with Earth, astronaut Lee Miller becomes stranded in orbit alone aboard the International Space Station. As time passes and life support systems dwindle, Lee battles to maintain his sanity ... and simply stay alive. His world is a claustrophobic and lonely existence until he makes a strange discovery aboard the ship. The film was funded...

The plight of the lone man in space is a common trope of the science fiction genre. Moon, The Fountain, 2001- all explore in various degrees of effectiveness what (and/or who) man is stripped of all he knows, isolated in the vacuum of space. Love, a more than worthy addition to this micro-genre, ably explores the ramifications of complete isolation. The solution to which – one can perhaps easily surmise from the film’s title. Hit the jump for my full review. Captain Lee Miller (relative newcomer Gunner Wright) is the first American in space after a twenty odd year break (a direct reference to Nasa’s recent space program shutdown). His mission: to man a deserted International Space station by himself. How long Miller has been up in space is left unsaid; but as we’re introduced, he seems to be suffering from the first pangs of loneliness. He...

Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, Naomi Watts as Helen Gandy in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar As J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI's notoriously corrupt, rabidly power-hungry topdog, Leonardo DiCaprio looks very much like Leonardo DiCaprio in the above still from Clint Eastwood's Hoover biopic J. Edgar. As Hoover's secretary Helen Gandy, Naomi Watts looks like Nicole Kidman without makeup. Watts certainly looks nothing at all like the real Gandy. The Big Question: Will J. Edgar delve into Hoover's alleged homosexuality and his relationship with protégé Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer)? Considering that the J. Edgar screenplay was written by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black of Milk fame, I can't see how it wouldn't. That might also explain Hammer's casting: the Social Network actor looks as much like Tolson as, say, Tom Cruise looks like Joseph Stalin, but Hammer and DiCaprio do make a nice-looking couple. In addition to DiCaprio,...

Warner Bros. is going for some Oscar gold this year, and not only with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, which the studio is hoping might turn into a Return of the King-style contender. The studio also has a couple of possible prestige pictures in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Info on those, plus the date for Alfonso Cuaron's new sci-fi thriller Gravity, is after the break. J. Edgar has been set for a limited release on Wednesday, November 9, with a wide rollout two days later on Friday November 11. Clint Eastwood's film was written by Dustin Lance Black and stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role as one of America's most prominent and notorious lawmen, original FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover. Armie Hammer co-stars as Hoover's confidante Clyde Tolson; Naomi Watts, Damon Herriman, Jeffrey Donovan, Judi Dench,...

The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. Considered the world’s largest genre film festival and running over three weeks long, the event is celebrating it’s 15th edition this year and the lineup is already pretty incredible. In the past I’ve seen some of my favourite films premiere at the fest and last year I wrote up a list of the best films ever screened at the fest which you can read here. This year Kevin Smith’s Red State opens the festival and directors Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) will be in the house to discuss the occult on film. The full lineup which includes 130-feature titles will be announced on July 7. For now here is the...

The greatest failing of first-time feature director William Eubank; Love is that ultimately, it's less than the sum of its parts. While nearly every frame of this stranded astronaut film by the former commercial director is immaculately-composed and is occasionally embedded with an interesting idea here and there, the whole thing fails to cohere into something that will stick with you beyond the initial viewing. Love is another lonely astronaut story, but there's nothing wrong with that. The loneliness and fear of those men and women who brave the vacuum of space is fertile narrative territory. In this case, the unfortunate explorer, Captain Lee Miller (Gunner Wright) has the unenviable task of manning the international space station solo. He keeps himself occupied: he tends to...

Angels & Airwaves' movie Love, directed by newcomer Will Eubank, is that rarest of beasts: a sci-fi/historical epic. It's a sub-genre that was practically invented by Kubrick and seems like a fairly galactic influence for a debut feature. Psk, says Eubank, whose movie - judging by its new trailer - doesn't look in any way short of ambition. Click here to watch it in full.Love is the story of Lee Miller (Gunner Wright), an astronaut who finds himself stranded in orbit aboard the International Space Station. Alone and desperate, he battles his lonely existence until making a strange discovery aboard the ship. We've got no idea what it is but hope for his sake it's not 47 ping-pong playing Sam Rockwells. A little Moon, a little Major Tom, with some Dances With Wolves thrown in? Frankly, we're not sure, but the filmmakers are promising an exploration of "the fundamental human...

The new gorgeous trailer for sci-fi film Love will have you scratching your head wondering what it is all about. But more importantly it will pique enough interest for you to place the film on your list of “must see movies” this year. Written and directed by William Eubank and starring Gunner Wright as the man floating in the tin can, it explores the spacey effects of isolation that were probed so delicately in Duncan Jones’ Moon.
Produced and featuring music by Blink-182 guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge’s supergroup Angels & Airwaves, the feature film is part of the band’s multi-album Love project. It will be shown at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in early February, with a DVD and deluxe album release scheduled for March 22.

Have you ever felt alone? What if you truly were? There is an absolutely breathtaking new trailer that you must stop and watch this weekend, as it came out of nowhere (well - Apple) and it's incredible. It's for an indie sci-fi film called Love, produced by Angels & Airwaves and directed by newcomer William Eubank that follows in the footsteps of Duncan Jones' Moon last year by focusing on one single astronaut, played by Gunner Wright, stuck in a space station. This one seems to have a lot more 2001-plus-The Fountain kind of epic visuals of the station and everything in between. But it looks so gorgeous and I really want to see it! A new trailer and poster for the film Love have hit the interwebs. A product of first-time writer/director William Eubank, Love stars Gunner Wright (The Losers) as Lee Miller, an astronaut who is isolated aboard a stranded spacecraft before making a peculiar discovery. After reading my one line premise, recollections of Duncan Jones' Moon almost inevitably come to mind. Even if these similarities prove true, I'm still interested in Love as it has been a much-talked about project from Tom Delonge's (formerly of Blink 182) alt-rock outfit, Angels and Airwaves (who score the film). Check out the poster and visually-minded trailer after the jump. Love will premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 2. Here's the trailer [from Apple]. Recently, we spoke with Matt Bendett, Product Manager at Visceral Games (EA), about Dead Space 2. After playing through the demo, we discussed some of the necormorphs revealed in the game, including the TriPod. "It's this massive beast that comes down out of the Church of Unitology," Bendett stated. "He's going to pin Isaac to ground and drag him to his death if he can. If you're Isaac you got to try to get out of that grip before it's night-night for you." We also talked about the Javelin Gun, one of the hot new guns in Dead Space 2. It allows you to pin your enemies to the wall and also deliver a secondary electric blast. Dead Space 2 comes to the Xbox 360 and PS3 on January 25, 2011.
