A run of successful horror remakes abruptly ended in 2010, which spelled trouble for Platinum Dunes. Producer Brad Fuller explains what happened next.
For almost a decade, Platinum Dunes was one of the most successful independent production companies in Hollywood. Beginning with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, which made over $100 million on a sub-$10m budget, the studio seemed to have hit on a magical formula: make genre movies to a price, attached to classic horror titles.
Texas Chainsaw was therefore followed by a string of other remakes, all based on films from the 70s and 80s: 2005’s The Amityville Horror was followed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006; The Hitcher, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street were all released between 2007 and 2009.
In the financial crisis era, audiences, it seemed, loved gory escapism. But in 2010, something strange happened: Platinum Dunes co-founder Brad Fuller noticed that his phone had stopped ringing.

Too often, great TV shows -- particularly horror shows -- are gone before they even have a chance to shine. It's often one of the most frustrating things about being a fan. A series will come along with a fresh perspective, compelling characters, and just enough scares to keep you hooked, only for the network to pull the plug after just one season, with either storylines and mysteries left unresolved or the potential for more standalone stories cut short. Horror shows do seem to be particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon, often getting the axe before they can sink their teeth into a loyal audience.
Many horror series were, in fact, canceled after just a single season, despite having the potential to become cult classics. These series may not have had the longest runs, but their creativity, ambition, and ability to unsettle viewers left an unforgettable impression. From grindhouse-inspired gorefests to cerebral nightmares,...

Insidious, the hit horror franchise created by genre visionaries James Wan and Leigh Whannell, was set to deliver its sixth entry in August 2025. However, we now have some bad news, as Sony Pictures Releasing has decided to push back Insidious 6 (there’s still no official title) by a whole year. The latest Insidious movie will now be released on August 21, 2026. According to Deadline, execs at Sony Pictures has now pushed the latest Insidious film to 2026 in the hopes of putting a more promising feature in its spot. Thus, they're replacing Insidious 6 with Caught Stealing, the crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky and based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston. The movie stars Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Bad Bunny, and Vincent D'Onofrio, among others.
Caught Stealing follows former baseball player Hank Thompson as he falls into the criminal underworld of 1990s New York City.

The co-creator and star of a Blumhouse found footage franchise explains why they made the jump from Netflix to Shudder. Although it's primarily known for its movie offerings, which run the gamut from Happy Death Day to Get Out, Blumhouse has had several television series with varying levels of success. Some of their more notable projects in recent years include the horror anthology Into the Dark and Prime Video's The Horror of Dolores Roach.
The production company made its mark, however, with the 2009 found footage horror Paranormal Activity. Directed by Oren Peli, and continuing in the form of several sequels, Paranormal Activity helped to propel found footage horrors as a way of telling familiar stories through a fresh lens and subverting expectations. Another mini-franchise, which has made the jump to television, would follow a few years later.

For all of its inventiveness and innovation, the horror genre's purpose can largely be summed up with one mission: scare whoever is watching. And while all of the medium's many subgenres excel at this to different degrees, few are as haunting as found footage films, those projects that use simple cameras to put the viewer into the character's space and grant them intimate insight into the terrors they're experiencing. There have been many attempts to experiment with this subgenre, yet it's shocking how few creators have tried what Oren Peli's The River did more than a decade ago by bringing the found footage style to television.

If you've been online in the last several years, you know that film fans love to make their little ranked lists of franchise movies, particularly horror fans. In addition to the fun of making a ranking, people love to use these exercises to express their individuality, often highlighting undervalued or overpraised entries in a given series as a way of going against the grain of consensus. Not that people are always looking to be contrarian; a lot of these rankings tend to strongly resemble one another. Still, you rarely find a few that are exactly alike.
Yet sometimes, a consensus is inarguably reached. As an aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes provides a decent bird's eye view of a film's reception. While it's hardly the first or last word on a movie, it certainly helps one understand the conversation at large surrounding it. There are numerous examples of movies that are generally beloved...

This post contains spoilers for the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.
When "Paranormal Activity" was first released in 2007, it was a small-scale, indie found-footage endeavor spearheaded by Oren Peli, shot with an initial budget of around $15,000. After the feature made some waves and was acquired by Paramount, the trajectory of this horror offering, which was initially meant as a standalone entry, changed forever. Now armed with a new alternate ending, "Paranormal Activity" had an unbelievably lucrative run at the box office, and this overwhelming success went on to spawn a highly profitable franchise with stories that sported interconnected timelines and a shared found footage convention. Although the first few entries feel fresh and effective, a case of franchise fatigue can be felt over time, especially with the most recent soft reboot, "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin."

The desire to blend reality and fiction in film predates the Found Footage genre by literal decades, with classics like The Legend of Boggy Creek and even the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre dipping their toes into documentary-inspired filmmaking long before in-universe-cameras became popular.
Of course, it was only after The Blair Witch Project that creators would realize both the creative and financial potential of making movies like this – and when it comes to lucrative Pov thrills, very few could compete with Oren Peli and his DIY Paranormal Activity franchise. For over a decade, these films dominated the box-office with formulaic yet consistently entertaining scares made on a budget, with their success allowing the programmer-turned-filmmaker to invest in other spooky projects. And while I’ve already covered Peli’s over-hated Area 51 on a previous edition of The Silver Lining, today we’ll be discussing one of his most unique...

Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez tell us how they started a found footage frenzy with their pivotal 1999 horror, The Blair Witch Project.
In 1999, a tiny indie film changed the face of horror. Its viral marketing campaign was soon adopted by bigger Hollywood movies like Cloverfield (2008). Other filmmakers rushed to make their own documentary-style shockers – most notably writer-director Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity (2007), which helped turn Blumhouse Productions into the horror powerhouse it is today.
The Blair Witch Project was the work of first-time directors (and former University of Centaal Florida film students) Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who in the early 1990s came up with their initial concept: the movie would essentially be a faux documentary, cut together from the film and video material left behind by three investigators who vanished while investigating the legend of a witch. What does "Pulp Fiction" have to do with low-budget horror movies? Well, the film's $8 million budget might seem like a fairly significant amount of money, but it's not the kind of figure you'd expect for a film starring Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman. Of course, at the time those actors weren't the bonafide megastars they'd become, or, in Travolta's case, king of the 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. Still, $8 million is more the kind of budget you'd expect for a mid-range horror movie, so it's impressive Quentin Tarantino managed to make $212 million from his off-beat postmodern pastiche.
That's not the only connection between "Pulp Fiction" and horror, either. Aside from the film's often striking depictions of violence, there's a surprising link between one of its stars and an ultra low-budget horror movie that debuted the same decade as Tarantino's film.

Due to a complex series of anthropological mishaps, the Wayans Brothers are a huge deal in Brazil. Around these parts, White Chicks is considered a national treasure by a lot of people, so it stands to reason that Brazilian audiences would continue to accompany the Wayans’ comedic output long after North America had stopped taking them seriously as comedic titans.
This is the only reason why I originally watched Michael Tiddes and Marlon Wayans’ 2013 horror spoof A Haunted House – appropriately known as “Paranormal Inactivity” in South America – despite having abandoned this kind of movie shortly after the excellent Scary Movie 3. A new Paranormal Activity videogame, from the creator of The Mortuary Assistant, has been announced. It should be ready in 2026.
The Paranormal Activity films have been terrorising audiences with their ambient, low-res hauntings for 17 years, and now it’s getting a videogame adaptation from designer Brian Clarke and DarkStone Digital.
Clarke previously made the 2022 horror game The Mortuary Assistant, which quickly went viral thanks to its found-footage-style scares. Interestingly, Clarke was directly inspired by Paranormal Activity when he made the game, so being commissioned to make an official adaptation brings things neatly full-circle.
“The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise epitomises the power and reach of the horror genre,” Clarke said in a statement shared with Gamespot. “If you thought The Mortuary Assistant was scary, we’re taking what we learned during the development of that title and cranking it up with a more reactive and horrifying haunting system. It’s going to be intense!

The idea of found footage as a filmmaking technique stretches back to at least 1961 with the release of Shirley Clarke's relatively obscure drama "The Connection." The found footage style was used to present scripted material as if it were documentary footage, employing a lot of shaky, handheld camera work and extemporaneous-sounding dialogue. The term "found footage" sprung from a common conceit of the style, which often implied that something horrible had happened to the filmmakers that prevented them from assembling and editing their footage. Once their footage was found, it was edited by a third party and presented in the theater.
There were many found footage films from 1961 until 2007, but the release and overwhelming success of Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity" sparked a years-long wave of the format, with most of its glory-chasers employing horror as their baseline. Late 2000s found footage horror was largely effective, as it often...

Ah, Blumhouse, modern horror's industry Monopoly. Back in 2007, a young up-and-coming Hollywood exec called Jason Blum produced a little experimental film by Oren Peli, a director with (at the time) no experience, and with a microbudget budget of 15,000 dollars. This film was Paranormal Activity and would go on to create one of the biggest budget turnovers in Hollywood history, taking that $15,000 and turning it into a whopping $200 million gross profit through box office returns. After this legendary outing, Jason Blum's independent company, Blumhouse Productions, would completely fill its industry niche from wall to wall, releasing horror hit after horror hit from Sinister to The Purge to the iconic Insidious series. Blumhouse was now the golden child of horror, blurring the line between experimental microbudget films and Hollywood blockbusters, with industry torch-bearers such as Bloomberg News praising the studio for making "blockbusters for pennies."...

It’s no secret some horror franchises get a bad rap because, let’s face it, horror sequels can be pretty awful. Still, no proper horror movie marathon is complete without a few unintentionally hilarious bad films to laugh at between the genuinely scary ones. Despite the inconsistent scares, these horror franchises are perfect for late-night movie marathons.
Update October 25, 2023, by Anthony Jeanetta. Late October is ideal for gathering friends and family and having a horror movie marathon. This list is updated to include more of the best horror franchises perfect for a scary movie marathon.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Horror movies might be snubbed by snobs and ignored by the Oscars, but they've never gone out of fashion for one simple reason: horror makes money. Other genres, from westerns to rom-coms, have risen and fallen at the box office, but horror is the true final girl of cinema. That's a lesson that Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum took to heart after "Paranormal Activity" became the most profitable horror movie of all time, building his studio up around a model of producing low-budget horror movies with massive returns at the box office.

Sometimes a movie scene is so scary that it haunts you for years to come. It could be a jump-scare that jolts your soul clean out of your body; an image so incomprehensible that your brain can never truly hope to resolve it; an atmospheric nightmare that fills you with palpable dread from head to toe. That’s the power of a great horror movie – the right shot, or sound, or cut feels like it could completely change your body chemistry. For some filmgoers, it’s a reason to never watch a scary film ever again; for others, it’s the exact reason they watch them in the first place.
With Halloween approaching, allow the minds of the Empire team to share the movie scenes that have scared them more than any other – horrifying endings, deeply dark childhood frights, emotionally-devastating delights, and ghouls simply saying, ‘Boo!’ Read it with the lights out.

Found footage horror evolves in an unexpected way: the Paramount horror movie series Paranormal Activity has a stage play in the works.
THR reports that “Simon Friend, the veteran producer who brought Life of Pi to Broadway, has picked up the license to the Paramount horror movie series with the intent of bringing it to the West End via his Simon Friend Entertainment.”
The stage play adaptation of Paranormal Activity is in early development and set to be penned by Levi Holloway, who previously wrote Grey House.
The 2007 found footage film that started it all, Paranormal Activity, was written and directed by Oren Peli. The microbudget feature, made on very little money, wound up grossing $193.4 million globally and successfully launched a franchise still going strong with Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, most recently released in 2021 on Paramount+. The movies have grossed almost $900 million theatrically, THR reports.

After nearly two years without a new film, Paranormal Activity will be adapted as a stage play, expanding the story's reach to live audiences. Acclaimed producer Simon Friend has acquired the rights to the story, with screenwriter Levi Holloway penning the script in the early stages of development. Paranormal Activity proved to be a pioneer within the horror genre, using security camera footage to create a realistic and dark atmosphere throughout the series.
The Paranormal Activity franchise has not released a new film in almost two years, but the horror franchise will soon tell a new story; not on the big screen but on stage.
There are already several films and movie sagas that have had the opportunity to expand their reach, arriving at the marquees of Broadway or London's West End. And now, the story created by Israelite director and screenwriter Oren Peli will have its chance to surprise live audiences as well.

It was a found-footage-stylized microbudget horror pic that spawned a six film theatrical franchise that grossed over $890M, now Paranormal Activity is set to be a play.
Deadline has confirmed that Simon Friend, the producer of the Broadway version of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, has taken the license on the Paramount/Blumhouse horror feature to set it up as a West End play.
Levi Holloway, the scribe of Broadway horror play Grey House, is currently writing Paranormal Activity for the stage.
Oren Peli wrote and directed the first pic, which centers around a family being haunted by a demon. The intrigue, much like the first Blair Witch Project, was the feeling that these horror movies could be real.
Friend’s stage adaptation productions include those of such pics The Da Vinci Code and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Life of Pi won five Olivier Awards and three Tonys.

According to THR, the Paranormal Activity franchise is set to become a stage play. I can’t say I saw that one coming.
Simon Friend, who commissioned the Life of Pi stage play, picked up the license to Paranormal Activity and is seeking to bring it to the West End. Grey House scribe Levi Holloway has signed on to write the play, but the project is still in early development at this time. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a fan of the franchise, I’ve got to admit that I’m a little curious about how they plan to adapt the found-footage story to the stage.
The original Paranormal Activity movie was written and directed by Oren Peli and followed Katie and Micah, a young couple who have recently moved to a new house and are being terrorized by a demon that has stalked Katie since childhood. The...

Netflix is reshuffling its streaming offerings once again, and the latest round of movies set to leave the platform includes a few new horror classics. More specifically, if you're looking for a scary movie to watch in September, you'll have to cross Oren Peli's 2009 horror phenomenon "Paranormal Activity" off your to-watch list before then, as it's due to leave the streamer at the end of this month.
"Paranormal Activity" may not be the most enduringly scary horror touchstone of the past two decades (its slow burn scares were polarizing even upon initial release), but it's certainly among the most replicated. The shoestring-budget flick about a couple who set up security cameras to pinpoint the source of unusual happenings in their home was inescapable upon its release, earning nearly $200 million at the box office and spawning six sequels and spinoffs and counting. Along with J.J. Abrams' "Cloverfield," the film...

DreamWorks originally planned to remake the first Paranormal Activity movie, but a test screening convinced them that it didn't need a remake. The director intentionally used a home video camera and limited budget to make the film realistic and authentic, which wouldn't have worked with a higher budget. The movie's limited budget led to an innovative viral marketing strategy that created excitement and contributed to its box office success.
DreamWorks' original plan for the first Paranormal Activity movie almost destroyed the horror franchise's potential. Set in San Diego, 2007's Paranormal Activity follows the terrors experienced by a couple after they move to a new suburban home. While the movie conforms to several horror movie conventions and features a fairly simplistic narrative, what makes it incredibly scary is its found-footage filming style and quasi-documentary approach towards storytelling that is reminiscent of horror epics like Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project.

The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

I haven’t seen much chatter about Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review Here), but movie-goers have obviously been showing up for it. The film had a very successful opening weekend, drawing in $32.65 million at the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide on a budget that’s said to be around $16 million. Is it beginning to feel a little like 2020 to anyone else? As the major Hollywood studios continue to refuse even entertaining the completely reasonable requests from the striking actors' and writers' guilds, they've already started pushing back films that were previously set to arrive in the next couple of months, with more delays potentially on the way. Meanwhile, Netflix is doing better than ever -- although, in this case, it's thanks to their deeply unpopular but undeniably successful crackdown on password sharing and not because everyone is stuck at home with nothing else to do but finally stream those films and TV series they've been meaning to catch up on.
Speaking of which (how's that for a segue?), if you've been planning to watch any of the films or shows leaving Netflix in August 2023, now's the time to get cracking. There's nothing departing this month too likely to vanish completely into the streaming void.

Few modern films have given Hollywood a much-needed adrenaline rush quite like Paranormal Activity. Shot in just seven days with a meager $15,000 budget, Oren Peli's 2009 haunted house sensation became an unexpected and massive hit, reviving the found footage genre and spawning a franchise. Ingenious and chilling in equal measure, the bare-bones film about a young couple terrorized by malevolent forces had audiences hearing things go bump in the night for days after seeing it, proving once again that when it comes to horror, less is truly more.

After starring in Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, Patrick Wilson has returned to the Blumhouse franchise for Insidious: Red Door. Although the upcoming film, which premiers July 7, marks the fifth installment in the horror franchise, it serves as a direct sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2. As audiences may remember, the second film concluded with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) going under hypnosis to forget the horrors they had endured. Wilson returns to reprise the role of Josh and also helms the film, which marks his directorial debut. In a recent interview with GameSpot, Wilson opened up about his directorial efforts. He said:

Over a decade after the Lambert family first drew the attention of the unspeakable things that lurk in The Further, Insidious: The Red Door updates reveal a final terrifying chapter to the franchise. The Blumhouse horror franchise kicked off in 2010 with James Wan's modern now-cult supernatural horror classic Insidious, a relatively cheap production that raked in big money at the box office. The 2013 sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 was even more successful, while a subsequent prequel and a fourth franchise installment demonstrated that horror fans can't get enough. In 2023 Insidious 5, titled Insidious: The Red Door, will once again put the Lambert family directly in the sights of the abyssal menace that is the Red-Faced Demon.
The latest Insidious 5 updates confirm that the series will once again focus on the Lambert family ten years in the future, with Ty Simpkins returning as Dalton, and Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne once against...
