“Cruella” (Disney) and “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon) were the surprise period winners for makeup and hairstyling, respectively, at the 9th annual Muahs Guild Awards Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. They beat out such strong Oscar contenders as “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “House of Gucci” (MGM/UA), and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight/Disney).
Additionally, “Coming 2 America” (Amazon), another Oscar contender, took contemporary makeup, hairstyling, and makeup effects honors. The latter was an impressive upset over “Dune” and “House of Gucci.” The “Coming 2 America” team of Mike Marino, Stacey Morris, and Carla Farmer perfectly complemented the Afro-punk vibe introduced by Oscar winning-costume designer Ruth Carter along with adding some new aging effects wrinkles.
While “Cruella” definitely has Oscar momentum for makeup and hair designer Nadia Stacey’s delightfully ’70s punk look for Emma Stone, the fact that the origin story split honors with “Being the Ricardos” — which...

“Coming 2 America” led all films at the 9th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, which were presented on Saturday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Eddie Murphy comedy in which makeup is used to transform Murphy and Arsenio Hall into an array of different characters, won three awards in the five feature-film categories, taking prizes for contemporary make-up, special make-up effects and contemporary hair styling.
The other two film awards went to “Cruella,” which won for period and/or character make-up, and “Being the Ricardos,” which won for period and/or character hair styling.
“Coming 2 America” and “Cruella” are both nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, along with “Dune,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “House of Gucci.” Since Muahs relaunched its awards in 2013, no film has won the Oscar for makeup without first winning an award from the guild.

“The Suicide Squad,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” lead the ninth annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706).
“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.
As previously announced, makeup artist Michèle Burke, known for her work on the Mission Impossible and Austin Powers franchises, and hairstylist Joy Zapata, who worked on “A Star is Born” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” will receive the 2022 Muahs Lifetime Achievement awards. The Distinguished Artisan award will be announced shortly.
The winners will be announced on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Now, that’s how you want to celebrate an iconic show’s 50th anniversary. The son of Anthony Coburn, who wrote the very first episode of Doctor Who, claims he owns the rights to the Tardis, the iconic police call box used to travel through space and time. He claims his dad gave the BBC informal permission to use the idea but that ended with his father’s death in 1977.
The CW has ordered a full season of its new dramas — The Originals, , The Tomorrow People and Reign. That last one is a bit of a surprise, since Reign has lost a lot of The Vampire Diaries‘ viewers (apparently, its ratings are consistent with or without the Tvd lead-in and there are a lot of online viewers only The CW can measure).
Sure, the writing on The Tomorrow People has me rolling my eyes, but it also has a...

Gage Hubbard, a.k.a. Gage Munster, won the very first Foundation Challenge of the show. He then held on until the finals despite never winning another challenge and garnered tons of fan support with his final makeup, a gruesome take on “Hansel and Gretel.” Predictably, many followers of the show thought he should have won the grand prize based on that design.

For the season finale of Face Off, the four remaining contestants - Samantha Cobb, Gage Hubbard, Tate Steinsiek and Connor McCullagh, had to create a makeup for not one, but two fairytale characters in three days. Each contestant was given the opportunity to choose a fairy tale and to choose a theme such as post nuke or haunted, etc.
So how did everyone measure up? I have to say they really stepped it and each one of them should be proud of themselves. However, this is a competition and there can only be one winner. Samantha Cobb who decided to do a psychedelic take on The Little Mermaid, did an excellent job on her makeup, but her effort lacked the complexity and nuance of the other contestants work. Plus, her colors got muted by a bold background. She was the first one elimnated, and rightfully so, by the judges.
So that leaves just three now.

Fango heard from William Butler and Gage Munster, writer/director and FX artist respectively of Demonic Toys 2: Personal Demons, who just returned from the shoot in Italy and sent the exclusive photos seen below. The movie was lensed in Charles Band’s personal castle (also the site of such memorable flicks as Castle Freak and The Pit And The Pendulum), where the spooky atmosphere was both a blessing and a bit of a “curse.”
“The shoot went amazing,” Butler tells Fango. “This was the first time I had shot in Italy since back when I was an effects supervisor on old Empire films like Robot Jox, Arena, Dolls and Troll. I had remarkable experiences working on those with Irwin and Frank Yablans, Stuart Gordon, Yvonne DeCarlo, Viggo Mortensen, Lance Henriksen—and of course, who could forget Sonny Bono?” It seems he can add Demonic Toys to his list of fond memories.
