“Cruel Intentions” is getting a new life in Prime Video’s TV series adaptation, which takes the twisted tale to collegiate Greek life.

Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess star as Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, respectively, step siblings who strike up a malicious deal for Lucien to seduce the VP’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who Caroline sees as her ticket to make her sorority untouchable amid backlash for a controversial hazing incident.

The main characters follow closely in the footsteps of the 1999 movie, Selma Blair’s Cecile Caldwell transforming into Sara Silva’s CeCe Carroway. Sean Patrick Thomas also reprises his role from the movie as CeCe’s love interest, but with more of an age difference this time.

The Cruel Intentions franchise has expanded to streaming with a TV show based on the 1999 movie, but despite borrowing its premise, the show has a very different ending. The Cruel Intentions TV show follows Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), wealthy step-siblings attending college in Washington D.C. Caroline is the President of the Delta Phi fraternity, while Lucien is the treasurer of Alpha Gamma. When both fraternities face a student movement that aims to end all fraternities, Caroline sets her eyes on Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), the Vice Presidents daughter.

As Lucien is into seducing fellow students and sleeping with them (and videotaping their encounters), Caroline proposes a bet to him involving Annie. It was sadistic, it had sexual tension, master manipulation, villainous step-siblings, and a small sprinkle of romance. Selma Blair would have considered making a cameo on Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Cruel Intentions” TV series — but was never asked.

“I knew it was coming but I can’t believe I haven’t seen the trailer,” she told Variety on Thursday’s Power of Women event, hours after the trailer for the TV adaptation came out. “Maybe there will be a cameo or something but no, I haven’t been asked anything. I’m excited to see it.”

Blair portrayed the innocent Cecile Caldwell in the 1999 film, which is based on the classic novel “Dangerous Liaisons.” In the movie, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, Cecile fell for her cello instructor, Sean Patrick Thomas’ Ronald Clifford.

Thomas will appear in the upcoming Amazon series as Professor Hank Chadwick.

The Cruel Intentions reboot finally has a premiere date. Amazon ordered the reboot series in 2023, but at that time, it was unknown if it would air on Freevee or Prime Video. Amazon made that decision in December, but that was the last we'd heard about the reboot.
