Wednesday night at a joint Apple TV+/Gold Derby FYC event, “Ted Lasso’s” top artisans celebrated their 2023 Emmy nominations at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Hollywood, CA. Emmy voters in attendance had a blast answering questions at “Ted Lasso Trivia Night” as they dined on short ribs, salmon, potatoes and fresh veggies and imbibed the “Ted Lasso”-inspired Pimm’s Cup alcoholic drinks. It still surprises me to no end how much "Ted Lasso" has become one of the most authentic shows on television. This endlessly charming ensemble, with Jason Sudeikis as its effervescent ringleader, has worked its way into my heart. The titular football coach is a man who knows what he does and doesn't like, but is always open to gaining a greater understanding of his new environment, except for tea.
When you have the weight and responsibility of an entire football team's success on your head, I imagine coaching can be pretty stressful. But while Lasso sees thousands of folks in the arena watching his every move, you may be surprised to learn that behind the scenes, the Richmond stadium is filled with fake crowds. Having to create over 26,000 folks from scratch is difficult enough, but creating the collective roaring sounds of thousands of roaring football fans is a strenuous task all its own.

“Dune” (Warner Bros.) was the big live action sound mixing winner Saturday night at 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. Coupled with last week’s Mpse Golden Reel win for feature effects/foley sound editing, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic is on track for the Oscar sound win next Sunday.
“Dune” was the frontrunner from the outset for its sonic power and complexity. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. So, rather than relying on over-hyped sounds, the teams conveyed an otherworldly palette that is hallucinatory yet gritty, from supernatural voices that rattle the mind to colossal sandworms that shake the sand dunes of Arrakis.

In March, when much of the country entered lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the makers of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” faced a dilemma. The 10-episode sitcom, about a Kansas City football coach (Jason Sudeikis) hired to lead a Premier League soccer team in England, had completed all of the principal photography, plus all of the post-production on the pilot episode. That left nine episodes to go in order to make Apple’s August debut date.
Editing and visual effects work could be completed by their respective departments in quarantine. Theoretically, making a stadium filled with people watching a fictional sports team shouldn’t be hard. In a vacuum, hooking up a few well-placed microphones amidst an actual rowdy, responsive cluster of fans should get you all the cheers and whistles and shouts and “awwww”s to plug in wherever needed.
But as supervising sound editor Brent Findley describes, laying the sonic groundwork for the word-of-mouth Apple TV+ hit “Ted Lasso” started with one fundamental roadblock.
“One of the catches with just going to a sporting event and trying to record the stuff wild is there’s so much music at these events,” Findley told IndieWire. “In the world of football, these clubs have copyrighted their chants and these chants are in these crowds continuously throughout the game. So it’s hard to just snag a section of a real-life crowd to use for something else because there’s music buried in it.
