The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movies have become some of the most lucrative video game adaptations in Hollywood history, proving that Sega characters can be major draws at the box office. And while the franchise is still going strong — Jim Carrey is coming out of retirement to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming third film — gamers clamoring to see more non-hedgehog properties from the Sega canon on the big screen are in for a treat. The iconic video game company is teaming up with Universal Pictures on a film adaptation of “Shinobi,” the ninja game that has delighted arcade goers for nearly four decades, IndieWire has learned.
The “Shinobi” film will be directed by Sam Hargraves, who is best known for directing “Extraction” and “Extraction 2” for Netflix. Ken Kobayashi will write the script. No casting details or release date have been announced.

Extraction filmmaker Sam Hargrave is getting into the video game business. The director is attached to helm Universal’s Shinobi, an adaptation of the Sega game series that seems tailor-made to his action strengths.
The game debuted in 1987 in arcades, and focused on modern-day ninja Joe Musashi, a man who confronts great evil. Hargrave is a stuntman who transitioned into becoming an in-demand director with the Netflix Extraction movies, which were praised for their inventive and visceral action, making it easy to imagine him unsheathing the sword for this property.
Shinobi has spawned 14 games, selling a combined 5 million copies, with a new installment in development.
Universal has found gold in the gaming space, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie topping $1.4 billion globally, and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy‘s passing $290 million globally, an impressive sum considering it debuted day-and-date on streaming service Peacock. Netflix dropped the teaser trailer for “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” the animated series (premiering October 10) that reintroduces the badass archaeologist/adventurer from the popular video game franchise. We finally have the first teaser trailer for Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (via GameFragger.com) and, perhaps the most intriguing thing about this series is the fact it picks up after the events of the latest video game.
Typically, a show like this would be a straightforward adaptation of a game or an original story that draws inspiration from it. How accessible this "sequel" approach will make The Legend of Lara Croft remains to be seen, though the sneak peek promises a fun, action-packed adventure.
It was back in May that we learned Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider TV series is officially moving forward at Prime Video. However, that's set to be its own thing and has no ties to the games or previous movies starring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

A long-awaited video game adaptation now has new life. Universal Pictures has officially boarded the "Just Cause" movie, and the studio has some impressive talent behind the camera to make the project a reality. That starts with director Ángel Manuel Soto, best known for directing the DC superhero movie "Blue Beetle." The project has also added "The Fall Guy" director David Leitch and his producing partner (and wife) Kelly McCormick on board as producers with their company, 87North.
Universal has a longstanding relationship with Leitch, as the filmmaker made "Hobbs & Shaw" for the studio before stepping behind the camera for "The Fall Guy." He also very nearly directed the new "Jurassic World" film before Gareth Edwards took over. 87North has a first-look deal with the studio, so this partnership makes sense. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson are also on board as producers. As for Soto,...

Lara Croft is returning to our screens in a live-action Prime Video series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Amazon is buckling down on its pivot toward more video game adaptations, officially announcing that a live-action Tomb Raider series is in development with Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm, reports Deadline.
Given the blockbuster success of Prime Video's hit series Fallout, an adaptation of the post-apocalyptic roleplaying games from Bethesda, it makes sense that the company would want to keep the money rolling in by greenlighting another hugely popular video game IP.
The first game in the Tomb Raider franchise was officially released in 1996, and developer Crystal Dynamics has been steadily releasing new games for several decades. Amazon announced the new series during the Amazon & MGM Studios Upfront event, with company head Jen Salke calling the planned series "epic" and "globe-trotting."
Most recently, Nintendo remastered the original three games in the series. The reboot trilogy, which started in 2013 and starred Camilla Luddington as Lara, also remains popular with new fans and diehards alike.

The video game community’s latest time-suck and bathroom companion, Vampire Survivors, is getting an animated series adaptation. Story Kitchen is teaming up with the game’s developer, Luca Galante, to adapt the gothic horror game into a top-tier episodic adventure! Sharpen your stakes, put on your garlic necklace, and get ready to run from Death for a new way to enjoy the “reverse bullet hell” experience.
Anyone can play Vampire Survivors. The game revolves around simple mechanics where the player controls a hero character while avoiding armies of enemies. You don’t have to press any buttons (except what controls your character’s movement), as all your attacks are auto-triggered. As enemies close in, your character uses projectiles, spells, familiars, and power-ups to survive the oncoming hordes. I’ve lost countless hours to Vampire Survivors since its Steam release last year before moving onto the mobile and Xbox Series X versions.

Johnson of the production company dj2 Entertainment. Waller-Bridge does not plan to star in the TV series, THR adds. Separately, THR reported that Amazon and dj2 Entertainment had inked a “massive” rights deal to make the Tomb Raider TV series, a feature film, and at least one video game as part of the same cinematic universe. It’s said that Amazon’s Tomb Raider deal is one of their largest, which is saying something, considering they spent 250 million just for the rights to Lord of the Rings.

Updated: Amazon Studios has tapped Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write a TV series as part of a potential Tomb Raider universe that would span television, film and games. According to sources, the TV series is in the works from the prolific Waller-Bridge, creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve and writer on No Time To Die and Solo: A Star Wars Story, and she also could be involved in the potential movie. Dmitri Johnson from dj2, who had secured the rights to the IP, is overseeing the development of the franchise and producing.
The projects are part of a Tomb Raider multi-platform universe Amazon has been putting together, which also includes games; Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics announced a couple of weeks ago an agreement to develop a new Tomb Raider single-player game.

Amazon is building a Tomb Raider franchise.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the retail giant and streamer has teamed with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment for a massive rights deal to make a Tomb Raider feature film, in addition to the newly announced TV series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and at least one video game in the Lara Croft franchise.
The idea is to build out a connected world of Tomb Raider, with the video game, TV series and film all interconnected in a fashion akin to what Marvel has already accomplished. The Tomb Raider video game was announced in December, with additional games in the franchise considered likely.
One source with knowledge of the pact described it as being among the largest commitments at Amazon after Lord of the Rings. By comparison, Amazon is estimated to have spent 250 million on rights alone to Lord of the Rings, with...

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently developing a “Tomb Raider” series at Amazon, TheWrap has learned. The news comes a day after it was announced that the Emmy-winning “Fleabag” creator had re-upped her deal at the studio, where she is also readying the show “Sign Here,” based on Claudia Lux’s debut novel of the same name, and another untitled project that’s being kept under wraps.
Waller-Bridge is set to write for the series, not portray the archeologist-adventurer character of Lara Croft. Previous adaptations of the video game have seen the role played by Angelina Jolie (in the 2001 and 2003 films) and Alicia Vikander (in the 2018 iteration). Waller-Bridge will also serve as executive producer on the project along with Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, who recently departed their roles as head of comedy and drama and head of overall deals, respectively, to form a production company that currently has a deal with Amazon.
