Scott Speedman of The Strangers and Underworld has joined Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and Isabel May of the Yellowstone prequel series 1883 in the thriller Sunflower – and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Speedman will be playing the villain in the film!
Sunflower will mark the feature directorial debut of writer Misha Green. She and Smollett previously worked together on the TV shows Underground and Lovecraft Country. Green created Underground with Joe Pokaski and developed Lovecraft Country from the Matt Ruff novel. Her first directing credit was on an episode of Lovecraft Country.
After spending more than a decade in development hell, Sunflower is finally moving forward at Lionsgate. The screenplay Green wrote for the film was so highly regarded that it was on the Black List back in 2008. The story follows two young women who are held hostage in a prison-like farmhouse by a deranged college professor. As they struggle to survive,...

Misha Green has been wanting to make a thriller called Sunflower for a long time… and after spending more than a decade in development hell, the project is finally moving forward at Lionsgate! Green had been attached to make her feature directorial debut on a Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander, but that fell apart when MGM lost the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise. So Green has now shifted over to making her feature directorial debut on Sunflower – and she has cast Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) in the lead role.
Green and Smollett previously worked together on the TV shows Underground and Lovecraft Country. Green created Underground with Joe Pokaski and developed Lovecraft Country from the Matt Ruff novel. Her first directing credit was on an episode of Lovecraft Country.

Turns out the grass is greener up in Cupertino, at least figuratively and literally for Misha Green.
The Lovecraft County creator has signed an overall deal with tech titan Apple to create and develop small screen projects for streamer AppleTV+ worldwide.
The lucrative multi-year agreement for Green comes exactly one week after HBO axed an anticipated second season of the acclaimed Lovecraft Country.
As Green made poignantly clear in a post-cancellation tweet, the sophomore season of the Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors and Michael Kenneth Williams starring horror drama was already significantly planned out. Not long after Deadline’s July 2 exclusive reporting on the WarnerMedia-owned premium cabler deep sixing the series based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, the Underground co-creator even shared a geographical glimpse of the over 70-page bible that had been assembled for what was widely assumed to be a Season 2.

(The following story contains spoilers from the third season of “Marvel’s The Runaways”)
Marvel TV fans mourning the end of Freeform’s “Cloak & Dagger” got to see Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Ty (Aubrey Joseph) one more time during the final season of “Runaways.”
“It was actually something that we had wanted to do from the beginning,” Joshua Schwartz, who serves as showrunner alongside Stephanie Savage, told TheWrap. “‘Cloak & Dagger’ and ‘Runaways’ are so tied together in the comics. We always felt like it would be a really natural storyline to have them come visit La, as they do in the comic.”
The duo appears at the very end of the seventh episode, following Nico’s (Lyrica Okano) attempt to return to the Dark Dimension to recuse Alex (Rhenzy Feliz). They nearly come to blows when Nico suspects them to be henchman for Morgan le Fey (Elizabeth Hurley...

From where I’m sitting, the Marvel TV landscape seems to be in a bit of a transition phase. For the most part, we’d seen various properties based on its comic book universe scattered across Netflix, Hulu, ABC, FX and Freeform in recent years, with a more McU-focused shift coming to Disney Plus. And as you’ve no doubt noticed, the casualties from the old guard have really stacked up.
The latest series sent packing is that of Cloak & Dagger, which called the aforementioned Freeform network its home. For two seasons, it dazzled a younger generation of True Believers, but I guess they’ll need to find their fix elsewhere as of now.
Considering how it’s been five months since the last episode aired and no word of a renewal came down, you might have seen this coming. It’s also worth mentioning how ratings dropped nearly 40% during the second season,...

Freeform has decided to cancel Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger series and it will not be back for a third season. With all the big changes happening at Marvel recently like Kevin Feige being made Chief Creative Officer over the whole universe and Jeph Loeb leaving Marvel TV, it’s not surprising that the series got canceled.
I really liked Cloak & Dagger and I’m a little bummed that the show is over. I won’t be surprised if Hulu’s The Runaways is next. Freeform offered the following statement addressing the cancelation:

Exclusive: Freeform has opted not to renew drama Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger for a third season. The news is not surprising as it comes five months after the second season of the superhero series ended its run on the Disney network. I hear the options on the cast expired this week.

We talked to Cloak and Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski about that Season 2 ending.
This Cloak and Dagger article contains spoilers for the end of Season 2.
Cloak and Dagger Season 2 ends on a quiet, yet incredibly powerful note: with Tandy and Tyrone holding hands, on a bus, heading out of New Orleans to use their superhero powers to help people elsewhere for a while.
Where is that bus heading?
"Yes, there is a specific place. I can tell you nothing else," showrunner and episode writer Joe Pokaski told Den of Geek during a phone interview prior to the finale's airing.
Our official guess is New York City, where the original comic book versions of Tandy and Tyrone meet as runaways and are injected with an experimental drug that gives them superpowers. (Though we wouldn't say no to Los Angeles, and that Cloak and Dagger/Runaways crossover that feels so damn organic.

We talked to Cloak and Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski about that Luke Cage reference and what it means for the series' timeline.
More than perhaps any other show in the Marvel universe, Cloak and Dagger is great at consistently and organically dropping lines that casually solidify its connection to the rest of this rich, fictional world.
One of the best examples came in the penultimate episode of Cloak and Dagger Season 2. What's next for Tandy and Tyrone? We have an exclusive sneak peek at this week's episode of Cloak and Dagger.

At the end of last week's episode of Cloak and Dagger Season 2, Tyrone collapsed into Tandy's arms moments after they liberated the girls and women trapped by Andre at the Viking Motel.
What's wrong with Tyrone exactly? Well, as showrunner (and Episode 7 director!) Joe Pokaski told TVLine: "The need to help Tandy caused Tyrone to overextend himself. He’s been powerful, but we haven’t seen him blow a gasket. That’s pretty much what’s happened. Between the need to get Tandy and the added boost Mayhem is giving him from the record store, by the time he finds her, he’s on 100-percent adrenaline."

The best superhero antagonists tend to be morally complex. They are "Shadow Selves" of our heroes' own journeys. A different path in the Choose Your Own Adventure that is every person's life. Maybe, on a bad day, you can even imagine yourself having taken that path, having made some of those same choices, too?
Of course Mayhem is more than a Choose Your Own Adventure path. She isn't just a shadow; she is her own valid, corporeal person. She casts her own shadow. It's refreshing to see Cloak and Dagger avoid the Jekyll and Hyde path in favor of something different. Mayhem is more interesting as a character because she isn't the "fake" Brigid. When TVLine spoke with Cloak & Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski at the end of Season 1, he promised us that the Freeform drama’s take on Mayhem would “surprise the heck out of” us. And now that Thursday’s two-part season premiere has aired, we can confirm he was right.
Thursday’s two-part premiere introduced us to the new vigilante on the block, but rather than merely existing within Brigid O’Reilly — as the character has in the comics — Mayhem gets to exist as her own physical being. Just as Tandy and Tyrone were beginning to (sort of) adjust to their respective new normals,...

We talked to showrunner Joe Pokaski about the rise of Mayhem, Cloak and Dagger's vigilante anti-hero.
This article contains major spoilers for the Cloak & Dagger Season 2 premiere.
While there may only be two names in the title, Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is really a show with three leads. The third is Emma Lahana, who played Brigid O'Reilly in the first season. In Season 2, she is taking on an extra role: Mayhem, a vigilante who has far fewer personal limits than Brigid, Tyrone, or Tandy when it comes to hunting down Nola's bad guy population.
"We wanted Mayhem to be the part of us that asks: why are we waiting so long for justice?" said showrunner Joe Pokaski of the character, who is adapted from the comic book source material. "And she is the angriest of us ... So, that's been kind of the plan—particularly when you...

We talked to showrunner Joe Pokaski about addressing real-world issues, who's behind the camera, and fitting into the larger McU.
Marvel's Cloak & Dagger doesn't have time to deal with Thanos. The Freeform show's superpowered kids have their own pressing, terrestrial concerns.
Described by showrunner Joe Pokaski as "a Sundance coming-of-age movie in the Marvel universe," Cloak & Dagger is a superhero drama that doesn't waste its time coming up with supernatural threats to the universe.
Instead, it has teen protagonists Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) use their burgeoning superpowers to confront real-world issues like police and corporate corruption, substance use disorder, human trafficking, sexual abuse, and systemic inequalities. The result is a cathartic experience for any superhero fan who finds themself sometimes wishing heroes would stop trying to save the entire universe and stab some local rapists instead.

Den of Geek talked to the stars and showrunner of Cloak and Dagger about Season 2.
Cloak and Dagger is one Den of Geek's most-anticipated midseason TV returns. The show, which follows New Orleans teens Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt) as they come into their powers and make big decisions about how they want to use them is one of the best superhero shows on TV—not to mention, one of the only superhero shows that engages complexly with real-life problems rather than using metaphor to address some of the world's harshest realities.

As much as we’ve heard that all the productions that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, be they on the big or small screen, “are all connected,” the truth of the matter is that there are rarely major links between the TV side of things and the movies. In particular, the outcome of Avengers: Infinity War has been all but avoided entirely.
So far, the only McU show that’s referenced Infinity War is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – the final few episodes of season 5 took place concurrently with the Q-ship’s arrival in New York and the Outriders’ attack on Wakanda. However, it appeared to have ended before its fateful final moments. As for the Netflix series, they’ve all been explained away as occurring well before Iw kicks off.

Cloak & Dagger‘s freshman season came to an explosive conclusion with Thursday’s finale, which pushed Tandy and Tyrone to their breaking points — then offered a wild peek into the show’s future.
A quick recap: After learning about the whole “Divine Pairing” situation, Tyrone volunteered to sacrifice himself to save the city, but Tandy wasn’t about to let him die just because some old legend claimed that only one of them could survive. And wouldn’t you know it, their team-up prevented the explosion without costing either of their lives.

Everyone knows to stay to the end of any movie that’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so as not to miss the usual post-credits scene, which generally teases what comes next. We’re not used to doing that with Marvel’s TV shows, however, but Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger is taking after its silver screen cousins and will feature a post-credits scene in its season 1 finale.

If you’re a massive McU fan and haven’t seen Cloak & Dagger yet, you should really fix that. As per most Marvel TV shows, it tells its own story away from the limelight of the Avengers, but what sets this series apart is that it’s not afraid to connect to other McU TV offerings instead.
As we’ve reported before, Cloak & Dagger has a strong through-line with events that previously occurred on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. That’s because the show deals with both the insidious Roxxon Corporation and the dangerous extra-dimensional element known as either Darkforce or Zero Matter, both of which have appeared on those previously-mentioned shows.

If the, ahem, love scene on Thursday’s episode of Cloak & Dagger caused you to do a double take, your instincts were dead on.
Because even though the action went down between Duane and his girlfriend, the imagery of the scene — her blonde hair, the black-and-white ensembles they wore afterwards, etc. — was meant to bring a different couple to mind.
And in case the visual cues weren’t enough for you, the sex scene went down immediately after Evita’s aunt declared that she was going to look into Tyrone’s future. So, what does this sexy bait-and-switch mean?...

Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger has impressed Marvel fans so far due to its neat connections to other McU entries. For one, Roxxon, the sinister corporation that’s been referenced in the likes of Iron Man 2, looks to be an important part of the series. What’s more, the mysterious substance Darkforce is key to the heroes’ origins, after it previously played a role in both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.
While these are connections that anyone with a working knowledge of the McU could notice, there’s actually one easter egg hidden in the Cloak & Dagger premiere that even the most ardent Marvel expert would be hard-pressed to pick up on. Showrunner Joe Pokaski spoke to ComicBook.com recently and revealed that Tandy’s T-shirt in the first episode references a band from the Marvel comics universe.

Tandy and Tyrone may not understand their powers quite yet, but after tonight’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger (Freeform, 8/7c), at least they won’t be able to deny their connection to one another.
Tandy experiences another one of her mysterious visions in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek of the episode, coming face to face with a young Tyrone — and the brother whose death he blames on himself.
“When she touches people at certain times, she has access to their hope,” executive producer Joe Pokaski recently explained to TVLine. “There’s something exciting about having a...

The latest Marvel TV show has hit the airwaves in the form of Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger. Starring Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph, the series explores the connection between lost super-powered teens Tyrone “Cloak” Johnson and Tandy “Dagger” Bowen. Despite these characters being well-entrenched in the wider Marvel universe in the comics, though, they’ll be kept separate from the rest of the franchise… at least for the moment.
That being said, Cloak & Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski’s revealed that he’s already spoken with studio execs about some potential future crossovers.
“We’ve had some exciting conversations about how we could artfully cross Tandy and Tyrone over [to other Marvel properties]. The beauty of these two is that they can show up anywhere [and it makes sense].”
As for this first season, the exec producer described the debut run as exploring the titular heroes “as individual characters,” so we shouldn’t expect any major crossovers,...

Freeform’s young-superhero drama Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger premiered with 1.64 million total viewers in Live+3, the cable net’s best series launch in two years. It also was Freeform’s most-watched drama telecast since the Pretty Little Liars finale nearly a year ago.
It also had the biggest digital bow ever for the network with 716,000 starts. The premiere drew 7.3 million views across linear and digital platforms and was Thursday’s most-social scripted series with 112,000 engagements across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr.
After three days of TV playback, the premiere jumped by 78% in total viewers over its L+Sd average and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another.
