“A Batalha da Rua Maria Antonia,” directed by Vera Egito, nabbed the main Redentor prize for fiction film at the 2023 Rio de Janeiro International Film Fest which wrapped this year’s edition last weekend, consolidating its position as South America’s largest fest and world’s main showcase of Brazilian productions.
The fest held the world premieres of 40 Brazilian features and four TV series. Its competition, reflecting the country’s production strength, included 54 local features, selected from 318 submissions.

Globo Filmes, the powerful film production arm of Brazil’s Globo, Latin America’s largest media company, has unveiled 11 new movie projects which join the biggest production slate of any company in Brazil.
Directors of new titles, all co-productions, range from star auteur Gabriel Mascaró, and celebrated doc director Eryk Rocha to multi-prized actor Dira Paes, who broke out in John Boorman’s “The Emerald Forest.”
Also in the cut is David Schurmann (“Little Secret”), who and Jean-Pierre Dutilleux whose 1976 “Raoni,” scored and was Oscar nomination and was championed by Marlon Brando.

The films selected for the Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 22-26) have been revealed and top 50% by female directors in the official project selection for the first time.

A total of 36 features from 34 countries will be showcased by producers seeking co-production partners through one-to-one meetings with distributors, financiers and sales agents.
For the official project selection, 21 projects with budgets ranging from €750,000 to €5m were selected from more than 300 submissions. With 11 projects by female directors, the proportion here has exceeded 50% for the first time.

Rio De Janeiro — Rio Creative Conference (Rio2C), the largest film-tv gathering in Latin America, wrapped its market sessions Friday April 26 with Christian de Castro, president off Ancine, Brazil’s foremost public-sector source, vowing to fully re-establish its incentives.
Castro spoke to an audience of producers and other players Brazil’s heavily incentive-dependent industry still in shock after the April 18 leak of his internal memo to Ancine’s employees recommending a halt in new incentive adjudications. The recommendation was aimed at protecting the employees from action taken by Brazil’s federal accountability office Tcu, which is investigating Ancine for inadequate accounting procedures.
“We have taken the necessary legal measures, and I am confident the full operation will be re-established next week,” Castro told Variety. “In the meantime, Ancine continues to release funds to ongoing productions and analyzing new projects. The only processes put on hold are the first release of funding to recently approved projects.

A unique partnership with Google on a new seminar series addressing gender and racial gaps in the film industry, particularly in technical cinematographic roles, is among new highlights unveiled today by Miami Dade College's Miami International Film Festival, as Festival organizers count down to the 33rd edition of the acclaimed annual event March 4 - 13, 2016. The Festival is the only major film festival produced and presented worldwide by a college or university.
"Google has changed the world of technology and information in swift and radical ways," noted the Festival’s Executive Director & Director of Programming Jaie Laplante. "Who better to lead a new charge at changing long-standing gender and racial inequalities in opportunities in the world of film and technology? We are incredibly honored that Google has chosen Miami International Film Festival as a forum to discuss solutions and inspire new filmmakers wanting to scale the heights of their chosen profession."
The Google Seminar Series on Gender & Racial Gaps In Film & Tech will take place in The Idea Center at Miami Dade College and other locations over four days, March 5 - 8, within the overall Festival program. Among the highlights of the series will be veteran cinematographer Kirsten Johnson's screening and discussion of her feature memoir, "Cameraperson," set to world premiere at Sundance Film Festival later this month. Johnson's film covers her extensive career working on such filmmakers as Laura Poitras and Michael Moore.
“Our research shows that when it comes to encouraging women and underrepresented minorities to pursue careers in computer science and other technical fields, positive role models matter, which makes the work of the film industry so powerful,” said Julie Ann Crommett, Google Cs Education in Media Program Manager. “We’re thrilled to support the Seminar Series on Gender & Racial Gaps In Film & Tech at The Idea Center at Miami Dade College to shed light on this important issue and inspire more creators to showcase positive portrayals of women and underrepresented minorities in tech.”

These titles join the previously announced women directors from Spain in the 2016 Official Selection:Paula Ortiz’s "The Bride" (La novia); Gracia Querejeta’s "Happy 140" (Felices 140), "We Are Pregnant" (Embarazados); and Veronica Escuer & Cristina Jolonch's "Snacks, Bites of a Revolution" (Snacks: Bocados de una revolución).
More announcements will follow as the Festival prepares to unveil its complete program. - The section devoted to 1st and 2nd films is mostly going with newbies this year. With the exception of Altiplano starring (Olivier Gourmet) from director pairing of Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth (Khadak), in my opinion, the complete sidebar will be a like throwing a dart aimlessly and hoping to land on something worth your while. In the past couple of years they had Junebug, Me and you and everyone we know, Look Both Ways, Xxy, and my favorite film of the section in 2008 was Aida Begic's Snijep (Snow). This year they have stripped the section down, by perhaps five films less and there are no signs of the Fipresci "revelation of the year" pick - a one slot for a film the organization thinks deserves a second chance.
