The casting on Hulu’s L.A. Clippers docudrama Clipped is getting harsh reviews… from someone who lived through it.

ESPN basketball analyst Austin Rivers — the son of coach Doc Rivers, played by Laurence Fishburne on Clipped — took time on a recent episode of his Off Guard podcast to rip into the Hulu series for its questionable casting choices. In a clip posted on Instagram, Rivers mocked the casting of NBA great Stephen Curry: “That is Stephen Santiago. That’s, like, the third baseman for the Padres. Who the hell is that guy?”

A limited series about one of the most notorious scandals in NBA history sounds interesting, right? Based on the ESPN 30 for 30 podcasts titled The Sterling Affairs by Ramona Shelburne, the FX series titled Clipped is created by Gina Welch and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the Donald Sterling scandal.

While many might still say HBO is the best American network for prestige television, FX has forcefully inserted itself into the conversation in the last few years. From the rabid animal that is The Bear to the densely historical Shōgun, the channel commands respect just by placing its name in front of a series. Knowing how incredible FX’s track record in the 2020s is, it came as a pleasant surprise when it was announced the network would be adapting a recollection of Los Angeles Clippers basketball owner Donald Sterling’s racist downfall at the end of the 2014 NBA season.

Using extensive research and journalistic fortitude from ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne, Clipped takes the already wild story of Sterling’s banishment from professional basketball and sensationalizes certain aspects of the saga for a wider audience. Equal time rules do not, in fact, apply to slightly fictionalized treatments of the real-life trials and tribulations of professional basketball teams, but for at least an hour it’s hard to shake the feeling that FX/Hulu’s six-parter Clipped exists as a make-good for the surplus of programming dedicated to the Lakers.

In terms of tone and style, that first episode of Clipped plays like the scrappy and far less enjoyable and successful younger brother to HBO’s Winning Time, an apt parallel for the relationship between the Clippers and the Lakers.

Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.

Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

“The Daily Show” correspondent Desi Lydic roasted Republicans’ inability to choose a new Republican Speaker of the House, saying the party should just “settle” on an option just like women often have to do when it comes to picking a suitor.

This week’s guest host was TV personality Desus Nice (“Desus & Mero”) who served up show’s weekly “Headlines” of the week. Some of the topics included Taylor Swift’s celebratory handshake with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, the nation’s tough health care system and Sheila Jackson Lee’s explosive phone call with her staff.

Jimmy Fallon thinks he may have found a solution for the Republican Speaker of the House problem: the Amazon Alexa House Speaker. “The Tonight Show” host cut to a fake commercial for the product on Monday night.

The commercial advertised some of benefits of the robotic speaker, including its ability to vote on bills and heckle the President during the State of the Union by saying “Let’s go Brandon,” a nod to the Republican outburst that occurred in February. Much like Kevin McCarthy, the speaker also has the ability to lose its jobs after just a few weeks.

“It’s time to listen to the speaker that’s been listening to you since 2014,” the commercial’s announcer cheerily says. Watch the segment above.

On Monday, the Republican-led House of Representatives hit its 20th day of being locked as it continues to search for the new Speaker of the House.

Update, 1:51 p.m. Pt: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) won the GOP nomination to become the next House Speaker, but he still appeared to be a ways away from securing a majority.

Jordan got 124 votes in secret balloting this afternoon, to 81 for Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga), according to Punchbowl News and other outlets. Scott got into the race at the last minute earlier today.

Jordan needs 217 votes to win the speakership, although that threshold may change if lawmakers are absent. Jordan requested another secret ballot to see if members would back him in a public vote on the floor of the House, but the vote was 152-55, still far short.

“He’ll get there,” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week, told CNN’s Manu Raju as he exited the GOP conference meeting.

McCarthy said that Jordan has to “just sit down and talk” to the holdouts.

When Tyler Perry wrote the screenplay for “A Jazzman’s Blues” in 1995, he imagined Diana Ross in the role of Hattie Mae, mother to a young man named Bayou (Joshua Boone) and an entrepreneurial woman who opens a juke joint in the 1940s South. When Perry finally made the movie — a passion project he held onto for 27 years, which is now streaming on Netflix — he turned to Amirah Vann to play the role.

Best known for powerhouse performances opposite Emmy-winner Viola Davis in “How to Get Away With Murder,” as well as major roles in “Queen Sugar” and “Underground”, Vann was “honored” to get the call from Perry — and even more so that he believed she possessed acting and singing chops comparable to Ross.

“The first time I remember him saying it, I was like, ‘Wait a minute?’” Vann tells Variety over the phone. “It just made me feel so honored.

The mix of musical genres in the title of this Toronto Film Festival Gala Presentation reflects the wildly uneven tone of this rare drama from Tyler Perry Studios, a lush romantic musical telling the story of a Southern lynching with echoes of the murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi 1955. An imminent bow on Netflix is probably the best strategy for it; Perry may have his following, but it’s hard to imagine a crossover audience for A Jazzman’s Blues.

Writer-director Tyler Perry has been living with the screenplay for “A Jazzman’s Blues” for 27 years, longer than it takes most kids to grow up and move out of the house. Inspired by a chance meeting between Perry and playwright August Wilson in 1995, You can’t keep a good melodrama down.

A glowingly lensed Jim Crow-era drama, “Jazzman’s” not unlike “Green Book” or “The Help” — absent the pandering to white audiences’ anxiety about being (to paraphrase a meme) the baddies in this situation. There is one sympathetic white character, Holocaust survivor Ira (Ryan Eggold); his German accent is as exaggerated as the rest of the cast’s Southern drawls. But while the same folks who liked “Green Book” will likely enjoy “A Jazzman’s Blues,” Perry puts Black life in rural Georgia in the 1930s and ‘40s at the center of his story — no white intermediaries required.

Like an ice-cream shop that offers you the choice of pistachio or strawberry and nothing else, the movies Tyler Perry has been churning out for 20 years come in just two flavors: comedy and soap opera. It’s worth noting, in this case, how the flavors blend. Most often, they’re stacked right next to each other, as when Perry’s great sass-mouth frump Madea suddenly plops into the middle of a dramatic scene. Yet there’s a way that the antic, ribald broadness of Perry’s comedy bends the drama into being more over-the-top. That’s why his movies are all of a piece even when they’re all over the place. With A Jazzman’s Blues, Tyler Perry proves himself to be, more than anything, a reliable auteur of serviceable melodramas. The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and will stream on Netflix on September 23, is an exercise in tropes and caricatures, a game of “spot the cliché.” Nearly all the usual suspects of Black and Biblical stereotypes make an appearance here: the tragic mulatto, the mammy, the magical negro, Cain and his brother Abel. They are assembled, like pieces of a familiar puzzle, under Perry’s assured direction and utilitarian screenplay. The result is Hollywood catnip.

The US premiere of Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” will close out the 2022 AFI Fest, the American Film Institute announced Tuesday.

“The Fabelmans,” which has been touted as Spielberg’s most personal film to date, stars Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Gabriel Labelle and Judd Hirsch in a story inspired by Spielberg’s own childhood. The film follows the formative years of a young man as he discovers a shattering family secret, causing him to use movies as a means to help him see the truth about others and himself.

The ensemble cast for “The Fabelmans” includes Jeannie Berlin, Julia Butters, Robin Bartlett and Keeley Karsten, with music by John Williams. ER star Anthony Edwards made his Broadway musical debut Friday night as “Dr. Walker” in the Tony-nominated Girl From The North Country. With several members of the company out of the show because of Covid-19 infections, Edwards stepped in at the last moment (and after only an hour of rehearsal time) to ensure that the show would go on.

He starred opposite his wife, Mare Winningham, who was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her role.

Girl From The North Country, Conor McPherson’s acclaimed musical that reimagines the songs of Bob Dylan, will return to Broadway from its three-month Covid hiatus, with a return date set for April 29. The production will conclude its 50-performance limited engagement on June 11.

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) has nominated “Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” in the category of feature film drama at the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards.

In the best edited comedic feature category, “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “Tick, Tick…Boom!” all received nominations.

Among the animated features nominated were “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.” The TV nominees include “Succession” and “The White Lotus.”

The Eddies are considered a precursor for the best picture and best editing categories at the Oscars. Five of the past 11 winners for best edited drama feature went on to win the film editing Oscar.

The acclaimed Bob Dylan musical Girl From The North Country will play its final Broadway performance at The Belasco Theatre on Jan. 23, with producers saying they’re in advanced conversations with the Shubert Organization to re-open in the spring after the Omicron surge subsides.

The unusual announcement follows a similar plan confirmed by producers of Mrs. Doubtfire, which closed on Jan. 10 with the intention of returning to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 14.

“Girl From The North Country is an important part of this season,” said Robert E. Wankel, Chairman and CEO of The Shubert Organization, in a statement. “We have always been supportive of this show, and we are excited about bringing it to another theater in the spring.”

As IATSE members prepare to vote this weekend on a proposed new film and TV contract, membership discontent is evident not only on social media but also is a playing out in the Editors Guild’s upcoming board elections. In their campaign statements, none of the guild’s 23 board candidates openly opposes the tentative agreement, but none flat out endorse it either.

Three years ago, the Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700, was the only local that voted against ratification of the 2018 contract – and by a huge majority. This time, however, the guild’s leadership is urging their members to ratify it, as are the leaders of IATSE and all the other 45 affected locals across the country.

Back in March 2020, the Bob Dylan songbook musical “Girl From the North Country” opened on Broadway on March 5, just one week before theaters shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now more than 19 months later, the show returned to the Belasco Theatre and reopened on Oct. 13.

Even though the musical officially opened last year, it did not run long enough for many of the approximately 800 Tony Awards voters to attend and was therefore deemed ineligible for consideration at this past ceremony. Since it has returned to Broadway, though, “North Country” will compete at the 2022 ceremony, over two years after its original opening date.

Three-time Tony nominee Conor McPherson wrote the libretto and directed this original musical, which uses more than 20 songs from Nobel-laureate Dylan’s catalogue to tell a Depression-era story of a family-run boarding house on the brink of foreclosure, which is set in Duluth, Minnesota, the city of Dylan’s birth.

Say Hallelujer, Madea fans! Tyler Perry is bringing back his most beloved character for an all-new adventure on Netflix.

Perry will write, direct and star in the film, donning Madea’s dress, wig and devil-may-care attitude one more time. Hadestown and Girl From The North Country announced their Broadway returns today, with the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown set to become the first production to resume performances on Broadway when its curtain rises on Thursday, Sept. 2.

Girl From The North Country, the musical that features songs from Bob Dylan’s catalogue, will resume performances on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

The Hadestown re-launch will mark the first Broadway production to begin performances since the March 12, 2020, pandemic shutdown. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had previously said that Broadway would be permitted to open at full capacity on Sept. 14, but Hadestown producers said today that the early opening was worked out in coordination with the Jujamcyn Theaters, owner of the Hadestown’s Walter Kerr Theatre, the Governor’s office and in cooperation with The Broadway League.
