After a summer holiday and some postal delays, I am finally back covering all things Adamantium-laced. Although there are only two books to cover this month, I feel enough time has passed that I can do a Wolverine-centric review of Deadpool and Wolverine complete with spoilers.
Life of Wolverine #1 Writer: Jim Zub | Artist: Ramon F. Bachs | Colourist: Java Tartaglia | Letters: Joe Sabino
This originally came out as a digital-first comic in ten parts, during the X Lives/Deaths mini-series. It makes perfect sense for Marvel to release this as a print comic when they did. It is a simple one-shot that can appeal to a cross-section of fans. Obviously, you have the hardcore Wolverine fans like myself who will pick anything up. It also helps bridge the gap between the ongoing series ending and the next one starting. Then there are the casual fans who might be interested in reading...

X-23 Deadly Regenesis #4-#5 Writer: Erica Schultz | Artist: Edgar Salazar | Colourist: Carlos Lopez | Letters: Cory Petit
I really don’t want to come down too harshly on this series. On a personal level, it just wasn’t for me, but there clearly is an audience for the character. Before I get into what is good and bad about these two final issues I want to reiterate my two biggest grievances with this series. I have mentioned it in every review of every issue so far, but why couldn’t we get an X-23 mini in the current Krakoan Era? To me, it just makes so much more sense. I only found out the other day that she is now going by Talon in the X-Books! She has been part of X-Men since this era launched so a Fall of X tie-in would have been perfect. All of the stuff...

Wolverine #34 Writer: Benjamin Percy | Artist: Juan Jose Ryp | Colourist: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Cory Petit
Benjamin Percy and co. are really putting it all on the table with this story arc. This issue delivers across the board from cover to cover and we aren’t even into ‘Fall of X’ yet! Percy has a lot more Wolverine on the horizon, guiding this series and X-Force through the upcoming event and out the other side. He also has a Ghost Rider crossover coming up and the recently announced Predator/Wolverine mini-series. I’m here for it all and having enjoyed nearly all of his output so far I am not expecting any drop-off in quality. The last issue left us on an all-action cliffhanger and no time is wasted on throwing the reader into the thick of the action mere moments after last month’s final panel. There is a lot of cursing in this issue,...

X-23 Deadly Regenesis #2 Writer: Erica Schultz | Artist: Edgar Salazar | Colourist: Carlos Lopez | Letters: Cory Petit
Unfortunately I am having some trouble with this story, which is a shame because I really love the character. I think a big part that is working against it, especially from my own point of view is the retroactive angle to the story. Without repeating myself from last month, in a nutshell, a lack of consequences detracts from delivering a good story. There has been a spate of retroactive storytelling from Marvel in the last few years, some has worked and some hasn’t. I think a lot of it can come down to the popularity and back catalogue of any given character to decide the levels of success a retroactive story can have. Even though I said I love the character I have to admit my knowledge of her early comics are sketchy at best.

Wolverine #31 Writer: Benjamin Percy | Artist: Juan Jose Ryp | Colorist: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Cory Petit
Let’s just get it all out in the open right away. Despite this issue having a new title it is really still carrying on the same story arc. After my mixed reaction to the previous 2/3 issues, Percy manages to make it all feel fresh again. So how does he do it? The simple answer… everything just seems to click. But we aren’t here for the simple answer! Now a lot of this review will seem like I am talking about Beast. Every hero needs a great villain and Beast is certainly becoming that. I have longed hailed Percy as the king of pacing and once again he shows us why. The flow of the story is narrated by Beast as his plan comes more into the light. It plays out in a way...

Weapon X #15 Writers: Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente | Artist: Roland Boschi | Colours: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Joe Caramagna
As someone who owns and has read every issue of Wolverine I have a huge amount of respect for a writer who takes something from the past and uses it. The set up for this story takes its cues from the idea of Sabertooth attacking Wolverine every year on his birthday. A story element established way back in Wolverine #10 (1989). Pak and Van Lente use it for fan service. They actually use it to tie into the on going story being crafted in Weapon X. It is a fresh take on the classic rivalry and I feel we will be getting plenty of examination into the Logan/Sabertooth dynamic through fresh eyes. Expect to hear the word ‘monster’ a lot in this arc. This issue is also a good jumping on point to...

All New Wolverine #30 Writer: Tom Taylor | Artist: Juann Cabal | Colourist: Nolan Woodard | Letters: Cory Petit
Firstly I would like to point out I am one issue behind on All New Wolverine. It is because I receive my comics by post and to ensure they are delivered in time to get my reviews done I have to miss the last Wednesday of the month some times. Over the year it will balance itself out at some point. In the top corner of the first page you see the caption ‘Orphans of X Part 6′. This story hasn’t dragged at all and the story has moved along at a good pace. Taylor has proven he can write for trade collections where some writers can’t. Each issue brings something to help develop the story. However I hope six issue story arcs doesn’t become regular in this title. This story arc and...
