Maynard James Keenan is mourning the death of his father, Mike Keenan.
The Tool singer shared a touching tribute to his dad on Instagram over the weekend, including several photos and the following eulogy, disclosing that his father passed away “peacefully”:
“My Father, Mike Keenan, also my Wrestling coach and Hs Teacher, passed early yesterday. He went peacefully in his room. And for those of you who knew him, that sounds quite boring. He lived an interesting life. He was Recently described as “Wild and Ungovernable.” Just one example: Over a year ago he was hit by the train in Scottville on his way home from a pow wow. Survived, but refused to go to the hospital for fear they would keep him from going competitive skiing in Helsinki in 7 days. With broken ribs. Totaled the truck. My truck, btw. Hit by the train that only comes through Scottville once a month.

In 2003, Disney released Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a movie that would reimagine pirates forever. Since then, these films have dominated the genre, and it's been very hard for other films to compete with its monumental success. As such, a lot of modern fans tend to associate pirates with what they've seen in these movies.
However, pirates are a unique part of history and have been discussed in a wealth of older films. From swashbuckling adventures to locating buried treasures, older pirate movies tend to attract viewers with their vintage charm. As such, some of the pirate movies were released long before Johnny Depp became Captain Jack Sparrow.

The latest sequel to 1989s Batman has seemingly brought a new version of the Riddler to the Tim Burton Batman timeline, but this exciting development may have also caused a continuity snarl that will need to be cleared up. John Jackson Millers 2024 novel Batman: Resurrection is set between the events of 1989s Batman and 1992s Batman Returns, and the novel not only combines characters and lore from both movies, it also introduces new characters to the Burton universe. Resurrection is also set in the same timeline as Sam Hamm and Joe Quinoness Batman 89 and Batman 89: Echoes comics.
In addition to including brief appearances by Batman 89s Barbara Gordon and Drake Winston (the latter being the Burton universes future Robin), Resurrection also introduces two classic Batman villains to the continuity: Clayface (Basil Karlo) and Hugo Strange, with the latter having been retroactively added to a minor background role in 1989s Batman.

As we approach the midseason finale of 9-1-1, many storylines are swirling, as is typical of the series’ fact-paced and frenetic pace.
9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 7 alone saw Athena dealing with a hotshot rookie who perhaps didn’t join the force for the right reason, Bobby back on the set of Hotshots, and Buck struggling in the aftermath of his breakup.
It was a busy hour, and things are only set to ramp up as we hit the final hour before a lengthy winter hiatus.
(Disney/Ray Mickshaw)
After such an intriguing hour, we had to chat with 9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear about everything, including what’s next for our favorite first responders in the coming hour and beyond.
And it sounds like this may only be the start of some journeys.

We’re eight seasons into this, and 9-1-1 continues to be one of the most compelling, explosive, and endearing shows on television. 9-1-1 is so back!
And that’s a bold proclamation considering the sheer amount of television currently being produced. I guarantee you there’s a show premiering tonight or in the following days you’ve never heard of. That’s simply television as we know it in the year 3000 2024.
9-1-1 stands out as a procedural that leans into its strengths and will never be afraid to have fun. And in the age of prestige TV, we need more of that.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
The silly to start this season is bees, which actually aren’t silly at all, and the hour does a good job of highlighting this.
Sure, there are lighthearted moments, like Eddie running around with ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ punctuating his every step. But overall,...

Bob Denver was a gifted comedic actor that, thanks to his association with the hit series "Gilligan's Island," found himself unfortunately typecast. Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom was a massive success, and its seven lead actors, although some of them previously known, became forever linked with their roles on the series. Denver was no longer an actor who played Gilligan, he was Gilligan. Many might have assumed that Denver didn't have any acting range beyond playing a bumbling dimwit like Gilligan, and the actor never had a success quite as large as he did in 1964.
It may surprise one to learn that Denver was, by all accounts, a pretty cool guy. Indeed, he was known prior to "Island" for playing the ultra-cool character Maynard G. Krebs on the sitcom "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." Maynard was also a broad, comedic character, but he was a devoted beatnik who wrote poetry,...

In the mid-60s, beach movies were all the rage. The super-specific subgenre was an early iteration of the coming-of-age movie, but in place of any real depth or story, its plots often focused on adolescent fun. They typically featured music, dancing, bright colors, and light romantic and comedic hijinks. At their most complex, the teen beach movies came across as a discordant mix of the sanitized family cinema of the '50s and the youth-in-revolt transgressiveness of '70s film -- slightly wholesome, but slightly countercultural.
The 1963 movie "Beach Party" is often credited with popularizing the mini-genre, and after its success, plenty of imitators were churned out in quick succession. Among them is "For Those Who Think Young," a relatively forgotten movie that's best-known as Nancy Sinatra's film debut. It wasn't just Sinatra who made waves on screen, though; the movie also starred Tina Louise and Bob Denver,...

Tool have made a tradition of pulling a light-hearted prank on their support acts at the end of a tour, and Cali alt rockers Night Verses were the latest to get the treatment.
In a video just posted by Tool on social media, bassist Justin Chancellor and some of the band’s road crew had a surprise ready for Night Verses during their final night supporting Tool’s European tour that wrapped up in late June.
Chancellor donned a mildly terrifying Willy Wonka disguise while his cohorts were wearing massive animal costumes as they collectively invaded the stage during an instrumental breakdown in the set. The members of Night Verses threw some double takes at the bizarre spectacle — Chancellor went centerstage wielding a cane, egging on the drummer and “conducting” the band — though they remained unfazed, crushing this particular crescendo in the song.

The preview for Batman '89: Echoes #3 introduces a terrifying new Riddler origin story for the "Burtonverse" version of the character, turning him into one of the Caped Crusader's most lethal villains. The Riddler's "Burtonverse" incarnation, as depicted in Echoes #3, is a dramatic and disturbing reinvention of the character. Doctor Hugo Strange may be responsible for Riddler's demonic transformation as several hints so far in the series have suggested that the character could also appear in the "Burtonverse" comic book continuation.
Warning: Spoilers for Batman '89: Echoes #3!DC's Batman '89 sequel comic has introduced The Riddler and expanded on his deadly origin story. Edward Nygma has always been one of Batman's most popular rogues, but he's easy to overlook when it takes a lot more than a tricky riddle to get passed the World's Greatest Detective. However, writers in the past have taken strides to make Riddler more terrifying than Heath Ledger's Joker.

Quentin Tarantino revealed The Gimp's dark origin story as a hitchhiker trained to be a "perfect victim." The Gimp is played by Stephen Hibbert, known for roles in The Cat in the Hat and Just Shoot Me! The Gimp symbolizes the possible fate of Marsellus, showing Butch's decision to do the right thing in Pulp Fiction.
The Gimp is one of the most mysterious (and disturbing) characters in Pulp Fiction, but in a 2020 interview, Quentin Tarantino revealed his dark origin story. Despite having an unsettling pitch-black comedic sensibility, Pulp Fiction broke out as a mainstream hit, with blockbuster box office receipts and impressive awards success. Tarantinos debut feature, Reservoir Dogs, had already made him an exciting new voice in filmmaking, but his sophomore effort Pulp Fiction made him a household name and solidified his legendary status. Hes the guy who can get audiences around the world to laugh at the plight of The Gimp.

Look, out in the internet! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… a set photo!
James Gunn’s Superman has started shooting in Cleveland, Ohio, where the Man of Steel’s creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster first met, and the set leaks continue unabated. Previous shots gave us looks at David Corenswet in costume as Superman and as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, as well as Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
The latest leak, however, hints at a surprising main villain for this young new Superman. The image shows Superman arrested by the military (again?), escorted by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as (presumably) big bad the Engineer, and a man in what can only be described as a gimp suit.

On the metallic side for Puscifer, the song is driven by sharp guitar stabs and a steady mid-tempo groove. And yes, the track title is a reference to “The Algorithm” as we know it in social media terms. Maynard James Keenan is infamously anti-smartphone when it comes to concerts, even banning the audience from using them at shows, and here he and guitarist Mat Mitchell lay down their full thesis on “dopamine addiction through habitual social media use,” per Puscifer’s press release.

Few modern-day actors are as enigmatic as Joaquin Phoenix, who once elevated the concept of a "tortured artist" to new heights by starring in a mockumentary about retiring from his acting career. Long before that, Phoenix had already shown no interest in playing by Hollywood's rules, resulting in outrageous behavior, some atypical acting choices, and a unique, one-of-a-kind filmography.
Critics have lamented Joaquin Phoenix's attitude in the past, but the one thing they've never been able to deny is that the man gives everything he has to each role. As such, he's one of cinema's last remaining true performative artists and absolutely one of the industry's most consistently improving stars. Simply put, Joaquin Phoenix keeps getting better with age, adding to his long list of impressive projects.

The iconic Jack Nicholson Joker makes a spiritual return in Batman '89: Echoes #2, influencing characters in unique ways. Harley Quinn, Maynard, and a Joker-inspired Dr. Jonathan Crane all embody the impact of the criminal clown's reign in Gotham. The legacy of The Joker endures in Batman '89 universe as seen through new villains and psychological impacts on Gotham City.
Warning: Spoilers for Batman '89: Echoes #2!The version of The Joker played by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie is back in an entirely new way. The Burton series has received sequels in comic book form, but with Nicholson's Joker falling to his death at the end of the original movie, readers have not expected him to return in these comics.
The Joker does, however, receive a unique, spiritual comeback beginning in Batman '89: Echoes #2. The issue is littered with characters who aren't The Joker, but do eerily exhibit his characteristics.

Anyone who’s been to a Tool show in recent years knows that the band kindly asks fans to put away their smartphones during the concert. One fan at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday (February 14th) learned the hard way by getting thoroughly admonished by singer Maynard James Keenan in the middle of the band’s set.
Ironically, another fan filmed the moment (as seen below), as Keenan ripped into the offending concertgoer while performing the song “Intolerance.” The frontman screamed, “Put your fucking phone down, dickhead! Seriously!”
It’s not the first time a fan incited the rage of Keenan by filming or photographing a Tool show. Back in December, the singer called another audience member a “dickhead” for using a flash at a show in Canada, yelling, “Take the light off dickhead. Take the light off. Don’t be American. Take it off dickhead.”

A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, and Failure have announced a joint live album, Cinquanta, recorded during a 2014 show celebrating the 50th birthday of Maynard James Keenan.
A known prankster, Maynard took the opportunity to grace us with some truly, um, noteworthy artwork, appearing as an adult baby — diaper and all — on the cover of the live album. Puscifer have had some ridiculous sleeves over the years, but this might be the most outrageous one yet.
Presented as a double album, the actual recordings were culled from a performance on May 10th, 2014, at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles when Puscifer, A Perfect Circle, and Failure shared the stage to celebrate Keenan’s 50th. Cinquanta is set to release on March 22nd on vinyl (in multiple colorways) and CD, but online pre-orders appear to already be sold out, so you’ll have to check with your local record store (per Puscifer’s Linktree).

One of my favorite categories of Reddit posts (don’t judge) are those where people who have worked for or near the super-rich share stories that people “wouldn’t believe.” From ordering private jets like they were pizza to hosting children’s parties where A-list performers sing to indifferent toddlers, these stories make it quite clear that the 1% lives on a planet most of us will never visit. “Pharaoh-level shit,” as one of my favorite Reddit reactions of all time said.
The craziest thing about Veni Vidi Vici, Daniel Hoesl and Julia Niemann’s pitch-black satire about a wealthy family with a predilection for human-hunting, is that it doesn’t seem that crazy.
The Ulrich Seidl-produced film opens with a quote from The Fountainhead, which can never mean a good thing unless we’re in store for a comedy. “The point is who will stop me”––a quote part...

Veni, vidi, vici: “I came, I saw, I conquered,” reportedly said Julius Caesar after an especially swift victory. Now, his words echo in Daniel Hoesl and Julia Niemann’s satire about a family so powerful it can get away with murder. Literally.
“Imagine you are above the law. You can do anything. It’s frustrating, because sometimes you want the world to wake up and yet nothing happens. It’s really funny and really sad,” Hoesl tells Variety.
“These people want to be stopped. They leave all these traces, so why does no one speak up? There is more than one Jeffrey Epstein out there.”
Premiering at Sundance and Rotterdam – and produced by Ulrich Seidl for Ulrich Seidl Film Produktion, with Magnify handling sales – “Veni Vidi Vici” takes a closer look at the Maynard clan where “family is everything,” but human life means nothing.

For those missing the billionaire voyeurism of “Succession,” Sundance film “Veni Vidi Vici” is poised to be a more sinister remedy.
Directed by Julia Niemann and Daniel Hoesl (and written by Hoesl), the film centers on the Maynard family, who live an “almost perfect” billionaire lifestyle, per the official synopsis. Patriarch Amon is a passionate hunter, but doesn’t shoot animals, as the family’s wealth allows them to live totally free from consequences, as the logline for the social satire dark comedy teases.
“Destructive strength is creative strength,” a character says in the trailer. “But don’t predatory cats belong in the wild?”
The hunt for whomever the dangerous hunter with no regard for human life is takes over a community, as all fingers seem to point to the elite family at the center of the drama. Yet the whodunit takes on another social issue: When the presumed wealthy “madman” killer is revealed,...

After working on series such as Succession and 2019’s Watchmen, Cord Jefferson has made his feature directorial debut with American Fiction, a satire-meets-family-drama that picked up the top audience award at Toronto International Film Festival and is now coming to theaters this holiday season. Following Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a teacher and writer in a rut, he concocts an elaborate joke to get more fame and acceptance. It’s taken shocking seriously, setting off a series of misadventures exploring how white America is more willing to accept the most reductive, pandering stories of Black trauma versus something that rings holistically authentic.
Following its TIFF premiere and head of a release beginning this week, I spoke with Jefferson about the tonal balance of satire and comedy in the film, the varied range of influences, working with Jeffrey Wright and the incredible cast, collaborating with Rian Johnson, and more. Also, check...

Before he became the frontman of Tool, singer Maynard James Keenan served in the US Army.
After enlisting in 1982, Keenan did his basic training in Oklahoma, and during his time at Fort Still, he roomed with one Jeff Parks. Keenan would eventually move on to be stationed in Kansas, and the two would fall out of touch as the decades passed.
As a birthday wish this past April, Maynard asked for help in finding his long-lost roommate, and after 40 years, the two were finally reunited face-to-face. The singer shared the heartfelt story on Instagram for Veterans Day this past Saturday (November 11th).
“For my Birthday this past April, I asked for assistance in tracking down my roommate from the Army,” wrote Maynard. “You all came through. Finally got to see him face to face 40 years later. Thank you for your service, Jeffrey.”

A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, and Primus have expanded their joint “Sessanta” US tour to include additional dates in April 2024.

The writers of MTV’s unscripted series “Ridiculousness” have filed with the National Labor Relations Board to vote on unionization via a secret ballot, a rep from Nlrb told TheWrap on Thursday.
The MTV staple, which also has a number of spinoffs and foreign versions that air around the world, is hosted and produced by Rob Dyrdek, whose Superjacket Productions recently rebranded as Thrill One Media.
“‘Unscripted’ television is very much scripted and our writing staff is fed up with being abused and underpaid by Paramount, MTV and Rob Dyrdek,” writer Ally Maynard told Deadline, which first reported the story. “We produce the most profitable show currently on TV and yet we are paid 60% less than WGA writers that work for ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos.'”
A rep for Paramount took issue with Maynard’s statement, telling TheWrap that none of the writers on “Ridiculous” are directly employed by the studio or MTV.

Blackbeard's portrayal in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides doesn't accurately reflect the real-life historical pirate, including his age, family, and treatment of his crew. Blackbeard encouraged myths about himself to instill fear in others and protect his reputation as a formidable pirate, but Disney's version of him in the movie goes beyond historical accuracy. Despite the inaccuracies, Blackbeard remains one of the most enduring and iconic figures in pop culture's representation of piracy, inspiring numerous on-screen portrayals and captivating readers with his deeds and trickery.
According to pirate expert Iszi Lawrence, Pirates Of The Caribbean's Blackbeard is a wrong representation of the historical pirate. The feared real-world pirate was portrayed by Ian McShane in the 2011 sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — the fourth installment in the Disney franchise adapted from one of the most notable theme park rides. Pulp Fiction has all the characteristics of a Quentin Tarantino movie, including various deaths, some more graphic and shocking than others. Following his debut movie Reservoir Dogs in 1992, Tarantino moved on with another crime movie that ended up becoming his big break as a filmmaker: Pulp Fiction. Told in a non-linear style, Pulp Fiction tells four intertwining stories of crime and violence set in Los Angeles, all of them linked thanks to Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), a crime boss and employer of the movie’s biggest characters: Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. The film opts for a direct and uncomplicated approach, lacking depth in character development and intricate plot elements. Nonetheless, it manages to entertain viewers with occasional twists and turns, despite some of them being predictable and ridiculous.
