Sean Ono Lennon may have initially rejected the astrology his family embraced growing up, but when it came to his new album, it felt like the very stars were against him. “I just felt like there was too much cosmic interference,” he tells Rolling Stone of Asterisms, a genreless wash of instrumental music that flirts with jazz, rock, and electronic. In the end, though, the planets aligned, and the record dropped Friday on John Zorn’s Tzadik label.

The production had previously been set to close on March 6.

The show received a Special Tony Award in September 2021 and worked through the December 2021 Covid surge with a series of “unchained”, or unplugged-style, performances.
The production features David Byrne with original band members Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan and Bobby Wooten III. The company standbys are Renée Albulario, Alena Ciera, Chris Eddleton, Evan Frierson, Abe Nouri, and Natalie Tenenbaum.

David Byrne’s American Utopia, the theatrical concert performance that played a limited engagement on Broadway to great acclaim and full houses for five months in 2019 and 2020, and months ago announced a 2021 return, has found its venue: Utopia will begin performances at Jujamcyn’s St. James Theatre on the previously announced Friday, Sept. 17.
Byrne will return to Broadway with his original American Utopia band fully intact: Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan and Bobby Wooten III.

David Byrne doesn’t do anything by half, and it’s a testament to his restless creativity that his performance of his song “One Fine Day” on the special New York week of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday featured a performance dramatically different from the one on his stunning ten-week Broadway residency that officially opened on Sunday.
While the “American Utopia” Broadway show features Byrne accompanied by an 11-piece band, this special Kimmel arrangement found him joined by Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco and the 70-odd member Brooklyn Youth Chorus for a drum-and-vocal-only version of “One Fine Day,” which is not from the recent album that shares a name with the Broadway show, from his generally overlooked 2008 album with Brian Eno, “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today.” While the version in “American Utopia” is the uplifting cap on the performance, if anything this version was even more inspired, with the choir...

Thom Yorke was nearly done playing a solo show at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles last night when a surprise Atoms For Peace reunion materialized. Nigel Godrich is already a part of Yorke’s solo band, so it only took Flea and drummer Joey Waronker to flesh out the rest of the band (though percussionist Mauro Refosco was absent.) Earlier this year, the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s drummer and Will-Ferrell doppelganger, Chad Smith, announced that the band was set to record their new album this September… Thom Yorke came along.
Yorke along with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco and Chili Pepper’s own Flea joined forces to form the super group Atoms for Peace in 2009. Their debut album ‘Amok’ was released this past February and the band wasted no time going on tour – with dates scheduled through November.
With Flea tearing it up on stage, Chili Peppers member Josh Klinghoffer predicted recording could possibly be delayed until early 2014. But while we may be stuck listening to same 11 albums for a little longer, Flea is continuing to have a kickass year – doing back-to-back tours with two different bands and even returning to the big screen in the movie Low Down.

Los Angeles — Southern California has been good for Thom Yorke.
It's the home base for his 4-year-old band Atoms For Peace, meaning he's making occasional tough cross-continent commuter flights from the United Kingdom but also hiking up to Griffith Observatory and surfing with Atoms bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The very English Radiohead frontman said Los Angeles is steadily working its magic on him.
"I find it hard to work in Britain all the time," Yorke said. "Because I've grown up with it and it's what I know. And I've also grown up with the cynicism that's in the genes. Sometimes it's good to try and wash that out. Generally in my work, it's really helped me a lot. And it's fed back into the Radiohead thing too. Maybe it's just getting old but I'm loosening up with all my ... stupid rules about what works, what doesn't work.

Thom Yorke has provided the score for a documentary about tax avoidance.
The Radiohead frontman was joined by Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja to work on actor Dominic West's The UK Gold, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Directed by Mark Donne, the film will premiere at the Troxy Theatre London on June 25 as part of the East End Film Festival.
The film sets out to reveal Britain's status as a tax haven.
"This is a political documentary, but more than anything else it is an extraordinary story," said Donne.

To have this journey unfurling at the exact time that the eyes of the world were on this country, during the Jubilee and the Olympics, gives the story a powerful twist.

Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace, the supergroup he has formed with multi-instrumentalist Nigel Godrich, Beck/R.E.M drummer Joey Waronker, Brazilian percussive master Mauro Refosco and the bare-chested slap-bass master of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Flea, released their debut album Amok last week. It caused befuddlement, mediocre reviews and a general shrug of apathy, despite a very eye-catching and original video for single Ingenue.
The problem is, apart from the super-loyalists of the Yorke opus, people just don’t seem to get it. On top of this, and perhaps more crucially, people seem unmoved by it.
Why is this we wonder? Well, the pitch is a tricky one.
First up, there is an anti-nuclear agenda to the identity and positioning of the group. Ok, fine, Thom Yorke’s well known for and and very vocal about his environmental leanings. And that’s a good thing, right? So,...

Thom Yorke, Flea, long time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, session drummer Joey Waronker, and percussionist Mauro Refosco have conjured up some heady experimental rock and electronica juju on this album of Radiohead-like alt-dance and fragmented rock tunes. The Red Hot Chili Peppers turn 30 this year, and they've found quite a few ways to celebrate. The band is headlining one of Coachella's nights and working on their eleventh studio album. Flea, the group's bassist, teamed up with Radiohead's Thom Yorke to form Atoms for Peace, which recently dropped its debut record. Drummer Chad Smith, meanwhile, lined up a trip to the nation's seat of power, lobbying lawmakers in Washington D.C. for music education funding.
Smith's trip was planned by Namm, the National Association of Music Merchants, a non-profit advocacy group the drummer has partnered with for years now. In addition to speaking with a number of congress members -- Rep. Impromptu ‘supergroup’ Atoms For Peace was formed in Los Angeles towards the close of 2009, initially conceived as a vehicle to allow Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to play his debut solo album The Eraser in a live capacity. The group boasts a notable and eclectic collective of musical heavyweights; with Yorke (vocals, guitar and piano), Chilli Peppers bassist Flea, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich (keyboards and synths), Brazilian instrumentalist Mauro Refosco (percussion), and Joey Waronker of Beck & R.E.M (drums). The musicians convened for a 3 day studio session in L.A. during which the band sought to recreate the electronic sounds that Yorke had previously conceived, after which Yorke sliced, diced and rearranged the pieces before layering his vocals over the results.

Atoms for Peace, "Amok" (Xl Recordings)
Since it was first used to describe the rock band Cream in the 1960s, the term supergroup hasn't always lived up to its moniker. The idea of assembling players from different bands isn't always grand, and rarely does it produce an exponential group effort.
Cream, Audioslave and the Travelling Wilburys are a few that triumphed through the sum of its parts. But for every success story, there have been numerous all-star lineups that were too predictable and somewhat boring. One of them is even named after a continent.
But Asia aside, merging players in a band is truly a tricky business.
So it makes you wonder why Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke teamed up with Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea and others in Atoms for Peace.
The nine-song "Amok" has an experimental groove, not much different from what you would expect from a Radiohead album,...

Atoms For Peace is the project name for Thom Yorke’s full band when he’s gone solo, and structurally the album “Amok” shows he’s still its leader. For it, the Radiohead frontman assembled a mighty drum circle. Nigel Godrich, Flea, Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco and Yorke beat, tap, hum and stir their way through a mere nine songs for the album, which feels further abbreviated by it’s ultra-tidy sound. Every tapestry of rhythm churns at a similar clip, with small and short programmed drum sounds rarely stepping in the way of Yorke's falsetto and protracted vowels. “Judge, Jury, Executioner,” one of...

Atoms for Peace, the supergroup comprised of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, producer Nigel Godrich, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and Mauro Refosco, have posted a full stream of their debut album "Amok."
The disc wasn't supposed to be released until Feb. 25, but has since leaked online. In a Reddit IAmA, Godrich and the famously enigmatic Yorke said they were "unsurprised" by the leak.
They also revealed that the band would tour the U.S. and that choosing songs for Atoms for Peace (as opposed to Radiohead) is a "gray area" that's "getting grayer." Yorke says Radiohead will be getting together soon, writing, "We haven't seen each other in a Long time, we will be in the same room again in (sic) April or May, I guess. I hope."

Amok, the long-anticipated first album from Thom Yorke's side project Atoms for Peace, is scheduled to come out next week, but as is common these days, the band has made it available to stream ahead of time. Yorke is backed by a supergroup made up of Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck and R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker, and percussionist Mauro Refosco (who's worked with David Byrne and Brian Eno). Stream the album below or head to their site if you want to see it visualized with spinning screenshots of the sites that post the stream (including this one!). Don't worry, it doesn't sound like Rhcp and Radiohead played at the same time. ...

Finally, a word directly from Thom Yorke on the future of his Atoms For Peace supercrew: the band has confirmed a new released date, some artwork and a tracklist for album "Amok." The full-length debut will be out via Xl on Feb. 26, a month after initially reported, with the personnel as expected, featuring Radiohead frontman Yorke, longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco and Flea. The set is only nine tracks long, which is actually unsurprising, considering Radiohead's last effort "The King of Limbs" was only eight. Stanley Donwood, who has also worked with Yorke & Co. for stretches,...

Gulf Shores, Alabama — Having been at this for more than two decades now, the Red Hot Chili Peppers clearly know how to headline a fest: play the hits, thank the crowd, occasionally swat at a beach ball, exit stage right. Maybe work a few well-placed curse words in there too. These things tend to be the same.
So it's a testament to both their versatility and their dedication that the Chili Peppers' Saturday-night set at the Hangout Festival was anything but by the numbers, as the band jammed long and hard, stretching songs to the breaking point (and beyond), much to the delight of the raucous, sun-baked crowd.

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has revealed that Radiohead's Thom Yorke has been an inspiration for him since their recent collaboration. The pair worked together in their Atoms for Peace supergroup, along with drummer Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco and producer Nigel Godrich last year. "It influenced me being around Thom," Flea explained. "He's an unbelievably great musician and a beautiful man. He's so pure as an artist. It's less that I would try to copy him and more that just being around someone who channels really powerful energy is beneficial. "It's a relationship I will always hope to nurture." Flea added that he has also enjoyed collaborating with the likes of Damon Albarn and Patti Smith during Red Hot Chili Peppers' two-year hiatus, but that he is now glad to return to the band. It seems like you can't throw a stone without hitting some kind of supergroup lately. The likes of Chickenfoot (Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith, guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani and former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony) and the planned Trent Reznor/Gary Numan collaboration have brought together like-minded artists from disparate backgrounds and so far produced some interesting results. The latest marriage of rock royalty sees Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke joining forces with Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, Ok Computer producer Nigel Godrich, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco (who has worked with They Might Be Giants and David Byrne).
