There's no denying that Star Trek: Section 31 left a bad taste in the mouths of many die-hard Trekkies thanks to what they feel was a film filled with weak characters and an even weaker plot that didn't seem like a Star Trek movie. However, actor Rob Kazinskysays the film wasn't made for the hardcore fan base, and that if the franchise is to continue into the future, you have to try and make "different flavors" that will appeal to everyone to prevent it from "dying."
Kazinsky – who portrayed Zeph in Section 31 – recently appeared on the TrekCulture podcast to discuss his love of Star Trek, and his role in the new movie, which was unfortunately panned by critics and fans. Produced by longtime Trek collaborator Alex Kurtzman, Kazinsky revealed a candid conversation he had with the producer and Section 31 director Olatunde Osunsanmi about why the franchise is "dying." Art the Clown continues to be the king of modern horror thanks to Terrifier 3. The third entry in Damien Leone’s epic slasher saga made a killing at the box office and eventually became the highest-grossing unrated film of all-time. Because of that success, Art has been swimming in a blood-red sea of merchandise. This included Funko Pops, apparel collections and action figures. Now Neca has entered the ring with a massive new line of Terrifier figures.

As David Howard Thornton continues to gain notoriety for his role as Art the Clown in the popular Terrifier movies, his fans and slasher movie fanatics should book a ticket for Screamboat, a new killer cruise-ride horror movie opening in the U.S. in April 2025. Thornton portrays a murderous version of Mickey Mouse in the subversive slasher movie, building on a new disturbing Disney horror trend after last year's The Mouse Trap.
With obvious nods to Jason Takes Manhattan, a classic slasher on a cruise ship stopping in New York, Screamboat turns a touristy ferry ride into a fiendish and ferocious course through hyperviolent hell. Yet, with Thornton leading the way, Screamboat is the perfect alternative and/or placeholder to keep fans busy until Art the Clown returns for a fourth Terrifier film. All aboard!
'Screamboat's Premise, Explained
Steven Lamorte directed Screamboat from a screenplay he co-wrote with Matthew Garcia-Dunne.

All movies are political, especially horror, as Terrifier's Damien Leone recently found out the hard way. The sociopolitical message of Art the Clown might not be very overt, but for other horror films, it's right out in the open. Such is the case for a 2018 horror comedy cleverly titled President Evil. This low-budget film, co-written and directed by Richard Lowry, is part loving tribute to John Carpenter's Halloween, and part highly political satire, as its Michael Myers-esque killer stalks his minority victims while wearing a Donald Trump mask and carrying a butcher's knife with the American flag painted on the blade. President Evil will make you smile if you're a big Halloween fan. It'll also make you laugh, as well as angry, no matter which side of the political aisle you sit on. And that's the point.

Going to see a movie in the theaters can be a fantastic experience, whether one watches alone, they're on a movie date, or they're just hanging out with their friends. While this era of streaming services has perhaps decreased the number of people leaving their homes to see a feature, movie theaters are not yet obsolete. However, popcorn and folding chairs don't always guarantee a cozy experience.
A good movie should make an audiencegoer leave the theater feeling something, whether it's heartbreak from a sad romance movie, joy from a fun comedy, confusion from a bizarre sci-film, an adrenaline rush from action, or terror and dread from a horror flick. Sometimes, it goes beyond emotional experiences, though, with movies occasionally causing physical reactions from viewers. For around a century now, people have left motion picture screenings complaining about vomiting, fainting, having panic attacks, and experiencing other medical emergencies as adverse...

The 40th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday featured plenty of smiles, tears and laughter from winners, presenters, the host and the audience throughout the ceremony in Santa Monica. From Anora‘s multiple wins, including for star Mikey Madison and director Sean Baker, to Natasha Rothwell’s emotional speech, here are some of the night’s most memorable moments.
Anora Wins Big and Director Sean Baker Pushes for Change
When Sean Baker (Anora) won best director at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, he took the opportunity to reflect on the current state of independent film and said the industry needed to change to keep that genre of films alive. “Indie film is struggling right now, more than ever,” Baker told the audience in a lengthy speech. “Gone are the days of DVD sales that allow for greater risk to be taken on challenging films. “Anora” director Sean Baker implored the independent film system to change during a powerful speech at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon while accepting the Best Director honor.
The filmmaker, who has built his career on modestly-budgeted independent features like “Take Out,” “The Florida Project” and “Tangerine,” spoke about the state of the struggling indie film industry.
“Anora,” which collected three awards at the Indie Spirits, including Best Feature and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison, was made for just $6 million.
“Indie film is struggling right now, more than ever,” Baker said as he took the stage to accept the award. “Gone are the days of DVD sales that allowed for greater risk to be taken on challenging films. Sean Baker is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. For the last two decades, Baker has worked on the fringes of American cinema, sticking to his independent roots, but as his star rises to new heights with his Oscar frontrunner “Anora,” the writer/director is using his platform to call out the inequity he sees within the film industry and how it keeps creatives from achieving financial security.
Upon accepting the award for Best Director at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards, after offering his thanks to everyone who made “Anora” possible, Baker dedicated a chunk of his speech to acknowledging the struggle indie film is currently facing. Baker explained that he thinks it will only get better when those who control the financing system offer greater support to artists.
Read Baker’s full Indie Spirit Awards speech below:
This is incredible. Film Independent, I love you.

The team behind horror hit Terrifier 3 will be reviving a horror classic. Production company Cineverse has confirmed a new entry in the Wolf Creek film series.
Australian horror hit Wolf Creek broke new ground when it was released in 2005, as it was shot on a micro-budget of just $1 million almost exclusively on high-definition video. Picnic at Hanging Rock and Dark Age's John Jarratt gave a terrifying performance as a serial killer hunting in the Aussie outback. Wolf Creek's box office success led to a 2013 sequel and a TV spinoff.

The spinoff of Greg McLean's 2005 horror film will premiere in October on American television.
According to Variety, Cineverse is now moving forward with a third film titled Wolf Creek: Legacy, where John Jarratt will reprise his role as killer Mick Taylor.

No modern franchise has taken the horror world by storm like Terrifier. The murderous adventures of Art the Clown have been depicted in three brutal mainline films. The most recent, Terrifier 3, broke the box office last fall. Because of writer-director Damien Leone's indie slasher success story, merchandise for Terrifier has gone off the charts. New clothing lines, animatronics, Halloween costumes, Funko Pops, and action figures have all made genre fans very happy in the past couple of months. Now, Trick or Treat Studios is re-entering “The Terrifier” for their latest action figure collection based on the franchise.

Good luck trying both side-ism with a franchise famous for cutting women in half.
Since bursting onto the genre scene, Damien Leone’s “Terrifier” series has become the most controversial success story in contemporary horror. To some, it’s a revolutionary triumph of low-budget filmmaking that boomed at the box office. To others, it’s an ultraviolent slasher about a killer clown with a fondness for sexual brutality and, in “Terrifier 3,” dead children.
To those paying attention, it’s both.
Now, an ongoing PR disaster for the filmmaker is dividing American audiences even further. On Monday, Leone posted on social media proclaiming that anyone “regardless of their political affiliations” was welcome in the “Terrifier” community so long as they’re “a decent human being.”
By most accounts, the director’s remarks were a thinly veiled response to the progressive online presence of his star evil clown, David Howard Thornton,...

2025 is in full swing and a majority of America is probably looking for a means of escape from the literal and figurative flames engulfing their nation. A new entry in the “Zachary Levi only gets kids movies now” canon that’s from the producer of Wonder but not “A Wonder Story” like White Bird (The Unbreakable Boy opens February 21) and the latest installment in England’s beloved marmalade saga (Paddington in Peru opens February 14) should provide families that reprieve.
Something tells me Marvel’s bid to join the fight with Captain America: Brave New World (opens February 14) might not fit the bill for a vocal minority of our citizenry. Heck, I’m surprised an executive order hasn’t come down preventing it from opening. That’s where it seems we’re headed.

The slasher subgenre of horror has seen a rather prominent resurgence in recent years. Whether it be the revivals of iconic series such as Halloween or Scream, or the introduction of new IPs such as Eli Roth's Thanksgiving, Damien Leone's ultra-gory Terrifier series, or even smaller indie projects like Rhys Frake-Waterfield's 'Poohniverse' franchise, slashers have become quite popular again after largely remaining dormant for some time. The newest slasher flick to enter the fray is Heart Eyes from Screen Gems, a film capitalizing on the Valentine's Day holiday in a similar manner as the aforementioned Thanksgiving did with its titular holiday.

No matter what side of the political aisle you fall on, or whether you're an American or not, you have to admit that things have gotten rather interesting of late with the re-election of Donald Trump as the United States President. Trump creates a lot of passion among people. It seems you either love him or hate him, with no in-between. This has led to some controversy in the horror community from the Terrifier franchise of all places. After stars David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera divided fans by criticizing Trump, director Damien Leone attempted to calm things down by claiming that his films aren't political. While he may have meant well, his words have caused even more uproar, and his refusal to take a stand made him look weak. He knew what he was doing and just didn't want to get involved, so he took the easiest way out possible.

The "Terrifier" films aren't exactly known for being indirect. Creator Damien Leone has created a saga of unrelenting barbarity, with burgeoning horror icon Art the Clown slashing his way across a handful of short films and three features. Indeed, 2022's "Terrifier 2" proved too brutal for even some seasoned horror fans, with reports of walk-outs helping propel the film to relatively impressive box office success. In 2024, Leone continued his mission to depict the most upsettingly graphic kills possible with "Terrifier 3," itself a film that prompted walkouts simply due to a stomach-churning opening sequence.
This a film series that has seen Art the Clown sever a woman in half from the pelvis up, whip a victim with their own intestines, and absolutely decimate the body of a young girl in a scene that happens to represent Leone's favorite kill and which has become the high watermark for unadulterated gore in the "Terrifier" saga.

Terrifier director Damien Leone seems to be in hot water right now with some of the franchise's fan base, who are calling him out for refusing to "pick a side" in the current political climate. Recently, Maga enthusiasts have been attacking Art the Clown actor David Howard Thornton on social media for his outspoken views on President Donald Trump and the current administration, which includes Elon Musk. Leone released a statement on Facebook (seen below) in which the director says he's "all for freedom of speech and expression" and didn't get into filmmaking to "become a politician or promote any political agendas."
"I want to make a very important statement regarding the Terrifier franchise in this ugly political climate we’re living in," he began, adding, "As most of you know, some of my cast and crew members have a very passionate political presence on social media with extreme and sometimes harsh opinions,...

David Howard Thornton has already had his brush with the darkness with his role in the slasher series Terrifier, where he plays Art the Clown. However, he delved deeper into the darkness as the Joker.
Although David Howard Thornton isn't officially in the running to play the Clown Prince of Crime, he got to play the infamous supervillain in a fan film. Taking off his clown makeup after playing the well-known Art the Clown, he put on a different makeup for the Joker. 2025's Jokers Wild is an almost 13-minute fan film based on the 1988 comics storyline A Death in the Family. After "Terrifier 2" became a surprise hit in 2022, the saga's murderous mute harlequin Art the Clown returned for more bloody mayhem in 2024's "Terrifier 3," one of the nastiest horror movies ever made. Whether you had the stomach to watch Art's unhinged killing spree unfold in that latest installment or not, you have to give it to franchise creator Damien Leone for managing to top the utter depravity of his previous effort.
The director had set a precedent with the first film in the series, 2016's "Terrifier," wherein he did everything he could to advertise the fact that his splatter-fest was not your typical Hollywood slasher. Heck, Art sawed a woman in half from the pelvic region to the head in that movie. Yet somehow every subsequent entry in the saga has managed to up the violence level, leaving fans to wonder how on earth Leone will outdo the barbarity...

It's a feature, not a bug, that Damien Leone's Terrifier movies have ludicrous stories: After all, a film franchise more beholden to logic probably couldn't get away with imagery like having main series bad guy Art The Clown's severed head get birthed out of the body of one of his former victims,...

If you come to pop culture prominence by playing a blood-thirsty homicidal clown, the Joker comparisons are bound to emerge at some point. For actor David Howard Thornton, the man who has played Art the Clown in Damien Leone's "Terrifier" saga since 2016, that's apparently a welcome development.
Thornton, who landed the role of Art due to some nasty improv during his audition, has seemingly relished every second of portraying the invincible harlequin, turning Art into a burgeoning horror icon following the surprise success of 2022's "Terrifier 2". With 2024's "Terrifier 3" proving to be an even wilder splatter-fest than its predecessor, Art's pop culture standing only increased, and talk of Thornton branching out into other roles has abounded.
When you're as good at portraying a killer clown with a twisted sense of humor as Thornton, the idea of playing the Joker was always going to be part of that discourse.

At the world premiere of the recently released Terrifier 3, franchise writer/director Damien Leone said there will be a Terrifier 4 – and he later said he thinks that will be the last entry in the franchise, because he doesn’t want it to wear out his welcome. Now, he has taken to social media to declare that he’s determined to find “the sweet spot” in the balance between gore and plot.
In response to an X user writer, “The Terrifier franchise would have been better if it was less plot-based and more kill-based,” Leone wrote, “Man, these guys aren’t making it easy for me are they?
