If you look back at the 'New Who' era of Doctor Who, you'll notice that no Doctor has lasted more than three full seasons. Whether it's David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, or Jodie Whittaker, none stayed with the role more than three complete seasons. Although in the case of David Tennant and Matt Smith, they did both return for a few special appearances.

The latest Doctor, played by 32-year-old Ncuti Gatwa, will return to the Tardis for his second stint next month. Initially, Gatwa had signed on to a multi-series deal as the Fifthteenth Doctor, but it seems his tenure may be coming to an end sooner rather than later. There's no official word on when Gatwa will step away from the series, but several reports, including this one from The Sun, suggest that the Whoniverse is on its last legs.

Doctor Who's Russell T Davies has addressed plans for who will succeed him as showrunner in the future, explaining "conversations" are already underway. Davies served as the original showrunner for the sci-fi series' revival in 2005, overseeing the seasons starring Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor and David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. He returned to his role starting with the 2023 60th anniversary episodes prior to season 14, and retained his role into the upcoming Doctor Who season 15. Speaking with Tennant himself on his podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast With… (via Radio Times), Davies confirmed he would not return to Doctor Who "a third time" after his current stint as showrunner. A set of giant Netflix billboards have been erected in the UK today promoting factual drama Toxic Town, but not everyone walking past will be able to see them.

Netflix is attempting to raise awareness of Britain’s poor air quality problem by making some of the billboards harder to view than others, depending on the air quality levels of the city they are in.

“If the air quality is ‘good’ you will see a full poster for the series. If the air quality is ‘poor’, we are sacrificing our billboards to be covered in a cloud of white smoke,” said a Netflix tweet promoting the billboards earlier today. “Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening,” added Netflix of the nation’s growing issue of poor air quality.

The 2009 lawsuit at the story’s center saw Corby mothers, led by Susan McIntyre (played by Jodie Whittaker), rally together to take on the borough’s council over toxic waste mismanagement that led to their children’s disabilities. It was a hard-fought battle for recognition and reparations for their children, and one that the cast and crew of Toxic Town sought to honor in its detailed portrayal of the story.

While it was oddly and rather unceremoniously revealed a few days ago, it has now been confirmed that Season 2 of Doctor Who featuring Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor will be released on the BBC and Disney+ on April 12, 2025. Jack Thorne, the feted British writer behind His Dark Materials and the upcoming Netflix series Toxic Town, has bemoaned the UK scripted funding crisis.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live’s Must Watch show, Thorne said there is a “real problem” financing British stories — and it’s beginning to bite in the development room.

“The type of shows that I love, not necessarily that I’ve written, are under threat and new writers that want to write this sort of thing are being discouraged from it by the state of the market,” he said.

Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to play the iconic lead on BBC's hit sci-fi series Doctor Who, has reflected on her time on the series and the issue of dealing with toxic fans. Whittaker played the Thirteenth Doctor from 2018 to 2022 over the course of three series and 31 episodes of television. Sadly, Whittaker's casting made headlines for both good and ill. Many fans loved her tenure as the Doctor, but there were also plenty of audience members who made their disdain for her incarnation of the time lord known, often critiquing the idea of a woman in the role of the space alien as "woke," a criticism her predecessor, Ncuti Gatwa has also faced.

Speaking with The Times to promote her new Netflix series Toxic Towns, Whittaker spoke about her time working on Doctor Who, notably the toxicity around her casting and the pressure she felt.

Jessica Gunning, who recently won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for her standout performance as Martha Scott in Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, has joined the cast of a new coming-of-age comedy romance film.

Per Variety, Sunny Dancer will also feature five-time Emmy-award-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and BAFTA nominee James Norton (The Nevers).
