The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1
The Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
The Plot: The Quileute and the Volturi close in on expecting parents Edward and Bella, whose unborn child poses different threats to the wolf pack and vampire coven.
The Buzz: The only drawback to having to choose a movie of the week becomes apparent on weeks such as this one, wherein I have absolutely zero interest in any of the new releases. First of all, I hated what I saw of the first Happy Feet, and the trailer for Happy Feet Two advertises a film which looks to be about as bearable as swallowing a glass full of shards of glass. And so, the...

Film: 'Larry Crowne'; Cast: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Sarah Mahoney; Director: Tom Hanks; Rating: *1/2 - Bland, stale, pointless.
On a simple level, the three elements that make a film likable are entertainment value, smart story telling and something to say. It could have one or two, but it should ideally have all three. But a film that does not have even one of these.

The players: Director: Tom Hanks, Writers: Tom Hanks, Nia Vardalos Cast: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Rob Riggle, Sarah Mahoney
Fact of interest: Nia Vardalos appears in the film as the voice of Julia Roberts' Gps.
The plot: Retail salesman Larry Crowne (Hanks) is forced to reinvent himself by going back to college after being laid off.
Our thoughts: "Larry Crowne" is possibly the first mainstream film released dealing with effects of our economic downturn and what happens to the thousands of individuals who have been laid off as a result of it. Coming off the heels of critical darlings like "Up in the Air" and "Company of Men," which deal with the same material in very dramatic and serious ways, "Larry Crowne" has the particular challenge of presenting rather dark material in a wide-audience, family-friendly way.

It’s summer. Period. No more discussion. You see, in Portland summer doesn’t fully hit until Fourth of July weekend. We survive through June with rain, overcast skies, and a lot of 60 degree days. No more. We are also officially in summer, and more importantly … Summer Blockbuster Season. The big boys are coming out to play (Harry Potter, Tom Hanks, Captain America). So with that, let’s get to it.

The Stars: Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson
The Plot: The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets.
The Buzz: In a recent interview regarding Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Michael Bay increased my optimism here tenfold when he said, “I got rid of the dorky comedy. We have a more serious story this time, and I’m trying to make up for the other two. It’s dork-free Transformers!”
Seriously, if this is true, this one might actually be good – I’m officially stoked — like 10/10 stoked!
