While the age-old adage "less is more" is sound filmmaking advice, the opposite applies to Jason Statham's relentless action movies. A case in point is Crank 2: High Voltage, a balls-to-the-wall action sequel that goes so far over the top that it dwarfs the absurdity of the original to leave a big, fat grin etched on the faces of hardcore Statham fanatics. Critics were also impressed, giving Crank 2 slightly better reviews than its predecessor.

Boasting a wild premise that forces Statham's Chev Chelios into a ticking-clock health scenario, Crank 2's high-voltage electricity derives from the extreme plot, flagrant fight scenes, hyper-violence, morbid humor, kinetic camerawork, Statham's breathless stunt work, and more. After directing two of the most underrated comedies of the past decade or so, “MacGruber” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” we haven’t seen a new film from director Jorma Taccone since 2016. Thankfully, that’s ending soon, as he is set to direct “The Trip.”

According to 87North and XYZ Films, Jorma Taccone has begun production on the new thriller, “The Trip.” The film is set to star Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and Keith Jardine.

Timothy Olyphant may be best known for playing onscreen lawmen, but his next project will see him tackle a remake of a Norwegian action horror movie. Perhaps best known for playing Deadwoods Sheriff Seth Bullock, Olyphants career has also seen him embody other quick-shooting lawmen, such as Justifieds Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, and even The Mandalorians Cobb Vanth. More recently, however, Olyphant has also developed an affinity for playing cyborg characters. In addition to having voiced the Terminator in Netflixs Terminator Zero anime, he is also set to play a synthetic in Noah Hawleys forthcoming Alien: Earth series.

No stranger to working on action-oriented fare, Olyphant is also well acquainted with the horror genre. Not only did he star in and executive produce Netflixs popular horror sitcom The Santa Clarita Diet, but one of his earliest onscreen roles even saw him don the infamous Ghostface killers mask in 1997s Scream 2.

Production is officially underway on the thriller The Trip, which is coming from 87North, XYZ Films, and director Jorma Taccone (MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) – and Deadline reveals that Taccone has assembled a cool cast for the film. The line-up includes Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Juliette Lewis (From Dusk Till Dawn), Paul Guilfoyle (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), and retired mixed martial artist Keith Jardine (Godless).

The Trip is based on director Tommy Wirkola’s 2021 Norwegian thriller, I Onde Dager, which starred Noomi Rapace and Aksel Hennie. The screenplay by Wirkola, John Niven, and Nick Ball has been reworked by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney. The original film had the following synopsis: Eager to end their marriage by murdering each other, a husband and wife head to a remote cabin — but soon find themselves facing an even bigger threat.

In 2021, Tommy Wirkola delivered a delightfully deranged and bloody comedic thriller in The Trip. Now, Variety reports that a remake is in the works with an impressive cast lined up.

Paul Guilfoyle (LA Confidential) and former UFC star Keith Jardine (Inherent Vice) have also joined the cast, likely rounding out the murderers that converge in The Trip.

Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis are taking “The Trip.” Jorma Taccone, a member of the Lonely Island comedy group and co-director of “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” is directing from a script by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney (BriTANicK).

If you’ve been following The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, you’ve known that one third of The Lonely Island, Jorma Taccone, has been absent for the last few weeks while shooting a movie in Finland. Details of that movie have finally been announced.

Taccone will direct “The Trip,” a thriller and comedy film that stars Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Juliette Lewis, and Timothy Olyphant, it was announced on Tuesday, November 19. Filming is currently taking place in Tampere, Finland and has been ongoing since October 23. Paul Guilfoyle and Keith Jardine also co-star.

This is Taccone’s first feature behind the camera since 2016’s “Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which he co-directed with Akiva Schaffer. For this one he’ll partner with the team behind “The Fall Guy,” David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s 87North production banner, and XYZ Films.

No distributor is attached for the film.

UFC fighter, Stephan Bonnar has died. He was 45. The news of the athlete’s death was shared by the organization on Christmas Eve. According to the announcement, Bonnar died from presumed heart complications.

“The UFC family is saddened by the tragic passing of UFC Hall of Famer Stephan Bonnar Thursday from presumed heart complications while at work. He was 45,” Dana White, president of the organization announced via the site.

“Stephan Bonnar was one of the most important fighters to ever compete in the Octagon,” White’s statement continued. “His fight with Forrest Griffin changed the sport forever, and he will never be forgotten. The fans loved him, related to him and he always gave them his best. He will be missed.”

No other details about his death have been shared.

When you’re bringing together two outsized personalities like Queen Latifah and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges for a family car trip deep into redneck territory, the least you could try to do is make it a little funny. But the Netflix feature End of the Road plays things more or less straight, eschewing comedy for a run-of-the-mill thriller that winds up being neither original nor particularly thrilling.

Directed by TV veteran Millicent Shelton (30 Rock, Black-ish, Jessica Jones and many other shows), the feature heads to familiar places despite focusing on a Black family caught in a dangerous white world of drugs, guns, bigotry and violence. There’s definitely some gas in its tank in the opening sections, which are somewhat promising, but then the story takes a predictable route that fails to deliver enough suspense or interest to go the full distance.

UFC fighters Keith Jardine and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone are teaming on a short film that will also mark Jardine’s directorial debut.

The short is titled “El Paso 11:55.” Brendan Fehr stars in the film along with Jardine, Cerrone, and Tait Fletcher. In addition to directing and starring, Jardine also serves as writer. It is set to screen at the LA Shorts International Film Festival on July 26 as part of Program 28.

“I’m humbled by all the heat that’s been surrounding this short,” Jardine said. “Being selected by this prestigious festival is a great affirmation for all the hard work I’ve put in transitioning from professional fighter to actor, and now writer/director. Especially now, as we are preparing to turn ‘El Paso’ into a full-length feature.”

Chicago – The filmmaker’s journey to premiere is different for all, but no one has seemed to symbolize it better than Logan Stone, the director and co-writer of the new release “Exodus.” The film will open in theaters and Apple TV+ streaming on March 19th, 2021.

“Exodus” involves Connor (Jimi Stanton), an enforcer in a small town, feeling the effects several years after The Rapture. His job is to make sure no one leaves town, but after questioning an escapee, he discovers a VHS tape that paints the image of “The Door,” rumored to be an entry to a Utopian Paradise. "Don't be afraid..." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for Exodus, a peculiar new old school sci-fi adventure of sorts. When a VHS-tape proves the existence of a rumored doorway to paradise, a young man abandons his decaying hometown in pursuit of the door to salvation, evading vengeful pursuers along the way. The film is set in a "post-rapture world" and involves post-apocalyptic gangs running towns. This doesn't look as good as it should, but there's some interesting ideas in here. Taking a cue from the theater and the old Hollywood studio system, Netflix has built up an impressive stock company of actors since getting into original programming. But interestingly, it is more coincidence than intentional creation of a repertory company.

The streaming giant does not have a dedicated casting department at the network level. Instead, Netflix originals work with a variety of casting directors, and the repetition in hiring talent is more hard work on the actors’ parts, as well as a byproduct of the seemingly never-ending river of content across a variety of genres that the service produces.

That’s not to say actors on other streaming services do not appear in more than one show. New York (Dec. 15, 2011)—Showtime Networks Inc. and world championship mixed martial arts (Mma) promotion Strikeforce have entered into a new broadcast agreement to continue producing live Mma events on the premium television network, Showtime. The agreement was announced jointly today by Stephen Espinoza, Evp and General Manager, Showtime Sports, Dana White, Ufc President, and Scott Coker, Strikeforce CEO. Under the new agreement, Showtime will produce and televise up to eight live events. Strikeforce athletes such as lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, women’s featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos, women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate and other world-class Mma fighters will continue to compete for the organization on Showtime. The new deal kicks off during the network’s Free Preview Weekend, Saturday, Jan. 7, as champion Rockhold defends the Strikeforce 185-pound title against dangerous veteran Keith Jardine at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, live on Showtime at 10 p.

Mention the sport of Mma (Mixed Martial Arts) and you'll likely be greeted by blank stares. Most people will, however, respond to hearing it referred to as Ufc (the most popular brand, a bit like referring to your generic brand vacuum cleaner as a Hoover or your generic brand fake-torch sex-toy as a Fleshlight) or cage fighting. But then they'll usually tell you that it's terrible and it should be banned. You don't really watch that, do you?

Such is the stigma attached to Mma. If you're reading this site, you can probably relate to this. Ever get told by people with no idea that comics are for kids or that if you like watching Star Trek then...

I am admittedly predisposed to moaning with remorse whenever a new film sponsored by a fighting organization makes its way to JustPressPlay's doorstep. Whether it's on DVD or Blu-ray rarely ever makes a difference, as they're often little more than circle jerks made to capitalize on the built-in audience of fighting fans who will consume anything as long as the scenes of controlled violence are brutal and offer up a few “did you see that?!” moments. For that reason, I rue these films. Unrivaled makes me reconsider that notion or, at the very least, amend it. This film, presented quite well in high-definition, spends as much time building on plot and character as it does in the ring with fists flying.

I know that as a reviewer, I’m supposed to maintain some degree of objectivity and not bring my own prejudices into what I watch, but let’s be honest for a moment: there’s no way that you can watch an Mma film on purpose and not know that it’s going to suck more than a little. I mean, seriously. I like seeing guys pummel each other as much as the next guy, but this is the second one that I’ve watched (the first being Never Surrender), and the feeling that they had made the film as a kind of endurance test was just as strong with this film as it was with that one.

Another exclusive video fresh from the set of Mma-powered movie ‘Unrivaled‘ shooting Toronto. This clip features the big, bald (& occasionally mean) Keith Jardine in a variety of scenes and on-set banter.

First off, Jardine messes with his stunt double Julian Lewis, then acts in a choreographed fight against Hector Echavarria, and also chats about his character and real-life friendship with Rashad Evans. Director Warren P. Sonoda shares some comments about working with Jardine pointing out his hard work and effort on set. Finally Jardine mentions his enthusiasm for indie film and the art of film and points out flaws in his stunt double’s hair-do.

During his career in the Ufc, Chuck Liddell rarely lost. Sure, he got knocked out by Rashad Evans and was on the short end of a decision against Keith Jardine, but Liddell spent most of his time dominating. But if he was jarred or put off by his elimination from "Dancing with the Stars" last night, he certainly didn't show it.
